In this study, simultaneous predictive distributions for independent Poisson observables were considered and the performance of predictive distributions was evaluated using the Kullback-Leibler (K-L) loss. This study proposes a class of empirical Bayesian predictive distributions that dominate the Bayesian predictive distribution based on the Jeffreys prior. The K-L risk of the empirical Bayesian predictive distributions is demonstrated to be less than 1.04 times the minimax lower bound.
Posterior Concentration Properties of a General Class of Shrinkage Priors around Nearly Black Vectors
Motivated by applications in cybersecurity and epidemiology, we consider the problem of detecting an abrupt change in the intensity of a Poisson process, characterised by a jump (non transitory change) or a bump (transitory change) from constant. We propose a complete study from the nonasymptotic minimax testing point of view, when the constant baseline intensity is known or unknown. The question of minimax adaptation with respect to each parameter (height, location, length) of the change is tackled, leading to a comprehensive overview of the various minimax separation rate regimes. We exhibit…
We consider the identity testing problem - or goodness-of-fit testing problem - in multivariate binomial families, multivariate Poisson families and multinomial distributions. Given a known distribution $p$ and $n$ iid samples drawn from an unknown distribution $q$, we investigate how large $ρ>0$ should be to distinguish, with high probability, the case $p=q$ from the case $d(p,q) \geq ρ$, where $d$ denotes a specific distance over probability distributions. We answer this question in the case of a family of different distances: $d(p,q) = \|p-q\|_t$ for $t \in [1,2]$ where $\|\cdot\|_t$ is the…
Nearly optimal minimax estimator for high-dimensional sparse linear regression
This paper discusses predictive densities under the Kullback--Leibler loss for high-dimensional Poisson sequence models under sparsity constraints. Sparsity in count data implies zero-inflation. We present a class of Bayes predictive densities that attain asymptotic minimaxity in sparse Poisson sequence models. We also show that our class with an estimator of unknown sparsity level plugged-in is adaptive in the asymptotically minimax sense. For application, we extend our results to settings with quasi-sparsity and with missing-completely-at-random observations. The simulation studies as well a…

We study the problem of robust estimation of the mean vector of a sub-Gaussian distribution. We introduce an estimator based on spectral dimension reduction (SDR) and establish a finite sample upper bound on its error that is minimax-optimal up to a logarithmic factor. Furthermore, we prove that the breakdown point of the SDR estimator is equal to $1/2$, the highest possible value of the breakdown point. In addition, the SDR estimator is equivariant by similarity transforms and has low computational complexity. More precisely, in the case of $n$ vectors of dimension $p$ -- at most $\varepsilon…
We study the minimax estimation of $α$-divergences between discrete distributions for integer $α\ge 1$, which include the Kullback--Leibler divergence and the $χ^2$-divergences as special examples. Dropping the usual theoretical tricks to acquire independence, we construct the first minimax rate-optimal estimator which does not require any Poissonization, sample splitting, or explicit construction of approximating polynomials. The estimator uses a hybrid approach which solves a problem-independent linear program based on moment matching in the non-smooth regime, and applies a problem-dependent…
We consider random-design linear prediction and related questions on the lower tail of random matrices. It is known that, under boundedness constraints, the minimax risk is of order $d/n$ in dimension $d$ with $n$ samples. Here, we study the minimax expected excess risk over the full linear class, depending on the distribution of covariates. First, the least squares estimator is exactly minimax optimal in the well-specified case, for every distribution of covariates. We express the minimax risk in terms of the distribution of statistical leverage scores of individual samples, and deduce a mini…
In this paper we are concerned with a sequence of univariate random variables with piecewise polynomial means and independent sub-Gaussian noise. The underlying polynomials are allowed to be of arbitrary but fixed degrees. All the other model parameters are allowed to vary depending on the sample size. We propose a two-step estimation procedure based on the $\ell_0$-penalisation and provide upper bounds on the localisation error. We complement these results by deriving a global information-theoretic lower bounds, which show that our two-step estimators are nearly minimax rate-optimal. We also …

We consider the stochastic contextual bandit problem under the high dimensional linear model. We focus on the case where the action space is finite and random, with each action associated with a randomly generated contextual covariate. This setting finds essential applications such as personalized recommendation, online advertisement, and personalized medicine. However, it is very challenging as we need to balance exploration and exploitation. We propose doubly growing epochs and estimating the parameter using the best subset selection method, which is easy to implement in practice. This appro…
