The Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (T-BMT) equation is derived using the Exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. Extra new terms were found, and we discuss their possible physical applications. The main point of this work is to detail the procedure to get the general result. We explicitly present the choice of parametrization we used on the initial Hamiltonian and the motivations to take it. We emphasize that the final equations can depend on this choice, and it is possible to prevent the manipulations of the quadratic Hamiltonian become extremely cumbersome. More importantly, it is done in such a way that the transformed equations allow the direct separation into mass, kinetic, and interaction correction terms to the original T-BMT equation.
The paper offers an expression of the general Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation in the chiral representation of Dirac matrices and in the presence of boson fields interacting with fermion field.
The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation with Dirac matrices in the chiral representation: closed expressions for energy operators of fermions moving in electrostatic fields
Two Non-Hermitian fermion models are proposed and analyzed by using Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations. One model has Lorentz symmetry breaking and the other has a non-Hermitian mass term. It is shown that each model has real energies in a given region of parameter space, where they have a locally conserved current.
We study the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for a pseudoclassical particle with anomalous magnetic moment in an external, stationary electromagnetic field. We show that the transformation can be expressed in a closed form for neutral particles in purely electrostatic fields and for neutral and charged particles in external magnetostatic fields. The explicit expressions of the diagonalized Hamiltonians are calculated.
The paper formulates a standard model in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation using previously developed approaches as applied to quantum electrodynamics. The formulation of the theory in the FW representation does not require obligatory interaction of Higgs bosons with fermions for SU(2) invariance. In this approach the Higgs boson spectrum is narrowed significantly: the Higgs bosons are responsible only for the gauge invariance of the theory and interact only with gauge bosons.
In this paper we calculate the effective action for neutral particles with anomalous magnetic moment in an external magnetic and electric field. We show that we can take advantage from the Foldy Wouthuysen transformation for such systems, determined in our previous works: indeed, by this transformation we have explicitly evaluated the diagonalized Hamiltonian, allowing to present a closed form for the corresponding effective action and for the partition function at finite temperature from which the thermodynamical potentials can be calculated.
The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation (FWT) is used to separate distinct components of relativistic spinor field, e.g. electron and positron. Usually, the FWT is perturbative, but in some cases there is an involution operator and the transformation can be done exactly. We consider some aspects of an exact FWT and show that, even if the theory does not admit an involution operator, one can use the technique of exact FWT to obtain the conventional perturbative result. Several particular cases can be elaborated as examples.
We discuss the possibility to perform and use the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation (EFWT) for the Dirac spinor coupled to different CPT and Lorentz violating terms. The classification of such terms is performed, selecting those of them which admit EFWT. For the particular example of an axial vector field, which can be associated with the completely antisymmetric torsion, we construct an explicit EFWT in the case when only a timelike component of this axial vector is present. In the cases when EFWT is not possible, one can still use the corresponding technique for deriving the perturbative…
The canonical quantization of $D=2n$ dimensional Dirac spinning particle in the external electromagnetic field is carried out in the gauge which allows to describe simultaneously particles and antiparticles (massive and massless) already at the classical level. Pseudoclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is used to obtain canonical (Newton-Wigner) coordinates and in terms of this variables the theory is quantized. The connection of this quantization with the Blount picture of Dirac particle in the external electromagnetic field is discussed.
The Exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation (EFWT) method is generalized here. In principle, it is not possible to construct the EFWT to any Hamiltonian. The transformation conditions are the same but the involution operator has a new form. We took a special example and constructed explicitly the new involution operator that allows one to perform the transformation. We treat the case of the Hamiltonian with 160 possible CPT-Lorentz breaking terms, using this new technique. The transformation was performed and physics analysis of the equations of motion is shown.
It is shown that the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic particles in strong external fields provides the possibility of obtaining a meaningful classical limit of the relativistic quantum mechanics. The full agreement between quantum and classical theories is proved. The coincidence of the semiclassical equations of motion of particles and their spins with the corresponding classical equations is established. The Niels Bohr's correspondence principle is valid not only in the limit of large spin quantum numbers but also for particles with any spin as well as for spinless particles.
The exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is performed in order to study the Dirac field interacting with many possible external fields associated with CPT-Lorentz violation. We also derived the calculation of equations of motion as well as the generalized Lorentz force corrected by the mentioned external fields. The main point is the interaction between the Dirac particle and the terms that have the multiplication of electromagnetic field and the terms that break CPT-Lorentz. Finally, with the transformed Hamiltonian we were able to write an expression for the bound state of the theory and an…
The connection between wave functions in the Dirac and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations is found. When the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is exact, upper spinors in two representations differ only by constant factors, and lower spinors in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation are equal to zero.
A general method of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is developed. This method is applicable to relativistic particles with any spin in arbitrarily strong external fields. It can be used when the de Broglie wavelength is much smaller than the characteristic distance. Contrary to previously developed relativistic methods, the present method satisfies the condition of the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and is well substantiated. The derived relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is expanded in powers of the Planck constant. In this expansion, terms proportional to the zero and first…
We consider Dirac's free electron theory on the first quantized level. We decompose its canonical spin current á la Gordon and find a conserved ``Gordon spin'' current which turns out to be equivalent to the Hilgevoord-Wouthuysen spin. We can conclude therefrom that the Gordon-type decomposition mentioned above corresponds to a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation which transforms the Dirac wave function from the conventional Dirac-Pauli to the Newton-Wigner representation.
Up to now, the only known exact Foldy- Wouthuysen transformation (FWT) in curved space is that concerning Dirac particles coupled to static spacetime metrics. Here we construct the exact FWT related to a real spin-0 particle for the aforementioned spacetimes. This exact transformation exists independently of the value of the coupling between the scalar field and gravity. Moreover, the gravitational Darwin term written for the conformal coupling is one third of the relevant term in the fermionic case.
The paper considers quantum electrodynamics (QED) and weak interaction of elementary particles in the lower orders of the perturbation theory using nonlocal Hamiltonian in the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation. Feynman rules in the FW representation are specified, specific QED processes are calculated. Cross sections of Coulomb scattering of electrons, Muller scattering, Compton effect, electron self-energy, vacuum polarization, anomalous magnetic moment of electron, Lamb shift of atomic energy levels are calculated. The possibility of the scattering matrix expansion in powers of the coupli…

Employing the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation it is demonstrated straightforwardly that the first and second Chern numbers are equal to the coefficients of the 2+1 and 4+1 dimensional Chern-Simons actions which are generated by the massive Dirac fermions coupled to the Abelian gauge fields. A topological insulator model in 2+1 dimensions is discussed and by means of a dimensional reduction approach the 1+1 dimensional descendant of the 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons theory is presented. Field strength of the Berry gauge field corresponding to the 4+1 dimensional Dirac theory is explicitly derive…
The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1 particles interacting with nonuniform electric and uniform magnetic fields is performed. The Hamilton operator in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is determined. It agrees with the Lagrangian obtained by Pomeransky, Khriplovich, and Sen'kov. The validity of the Corben-Schwinger equations is confirmed. However, an attempt to generalize these equations in order to take into account the own quadrupole moment of particles was not successful. The known second-order wave equations are incorrect because they contain non-Hermitian terms. T…

The classical and quantum formulae for the Hamiltonian agree. The validity of the Corben-Schwinger equations is confirmed. Zitterbewegung of massless particles with an arbitrary spin is analyzed in various representations. Dynamics of the group velocity of a massless particle as a whole and of the corresponding radius vector is determined. This radius vector defines any fixed point of the envelope of the moving wave packet characterizing the particle and its group velocity differs from the group velocities of any points of the wavefront. We consider free massless scalar and Dirac particles, the photon, and massive and massless particles with an arbitrary spin and describe them in different representations. For par…

We discuss the quantum dynamics of the Dirac fermion particle in a gauge gravitational field. The minimal as well as the Pauli-type nonminimal coupling of a fermion with external fields is studied, bringing into consideration the notions of the translational and the Lorentz gravitational moments. The anomalous gravitomagnetic and gravitoelectric moments are ruled out on the basis of the covariance arguments. We derive the general Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for an arbitrary configuration of the gauge gravitational field without assuming it weak. Making use of the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltoni…
The derivation of the Glauber type representation for the high energy scattering amplitude of particles of spin 1/2 is given within the framework of the Dirac equation in the Foldy Wouthuysen (FW) representation and two-component formalism. The differential cross sections on the Yukawa and Gaussian potentials are also considered and discussed.
Schrodinger equation with two-component wave function which describes a relativistic spin 1/2 particle in a weak electromagnetic field is obtained. In the same approximation Schrodinger equation with traditional norm condition and one-component wave function for a spinless particle is obtained as well. To construct it Foldy-Wouthuysen procedure with the electron charge value as the small parameter is used.
We investigate the nonrelativistic limit of the gravitationally coupled Dirac Equation via a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. The relativistic correction terms have immediate and obvious physical interpretations in terms of a gravitational zitterbewegung, and a gravitational spin-orbit coupling. We find no direct coupling of the spin vector to the gravitational force, which would otherwise violate parity. The particle-antiparticle symmetry described recently by one of us in [Phys.Rev.A 87 (2013) 032101] is verified on the level of the perturbative corrections accessed by the Foldy-Wouthuysen t…
The problem of the passage of the neutral massless particle with anomalous magnetic moment through the external electromagnetic field is considered both in pseudoclassical and quantum mechanics. The quantum description uses the hamiltonian in the Foldy--Wouthuysen representation, obtained from the pseudoclassical hamiltonian of the massive charged particle with anomalous magnetic moment in interaction with the external electromagnetic field using Weyl quantization scheme.
In this paper we study the quantum dynamics of a neutral particle in the presence of a topological defect. We investigate the appearance of a geometric phase in the relativistic quantum dynamics of neutral particle which possesses permanent magnetic and electric dipole moments in the presence of an electromagnetic fields in this curved background. The nonrelativistic quantum dynamics are investigated using the Foldy-Wouthuysen expansion. The gravitational Aharonov-Casher and He-Mckellar-Wilkens effects are investigated for a series of electric and magnetic fields configurations.
Effective electric and magnetic polarizabilities of pointlike spin-1/2 particles possesing an anomalous magnetic moment are calculated with the transformation of an initial Hamiltonian to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. Polarizabilities of spin-1/2 and spin-1 particles are compared.
The non-relativistic limit of the linear wave equation for zero and unity spin bosons of mass $m$ in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau representation is investigated by means of a unitary transformation, analogous to the Foldy-Wouthuysen canonical transformation for a relativistic electron. The interacting case is also analyzed, by considering a power series expansion of the transformed Hamiltonian, thus demonstrating that all features of particle dynamics can be recovered if corrections of order $1/m^{2}$ are taken into account through a recursive iteration procedure.
We discuss the dynamics of the Dirac fermions in the general strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields. We derive the general Hermitian Dirac Hamiltonian and transform it to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation for the spatially isotropic metric. The quantum operator equations of motion are obtained and the semiclassical limit is analyzed. The comparison of the quantum mechanical and classical equations shows their complete agreement. The helicity dynamics in strong fields is discussed. Squaring the covariant Dirac equation explicitly shows a similarity of the interactions of electromagne…
We investigate the relativistic and non-relativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral spin-1/2 particle submitted an external electromagnetic field in the presence of a cosmic dislocation. We analyze the explicit contribution of the torsion in the geometric phase acquired in the dynamic of this neutral spinorial particle. We discuss the influence of the torsion in the relativistic geometric phase. Using the Foldy-Wouthuysen approximation, the non-relativistic quantum dynamics are studied and the influence of the torsion in the Aharonov-Casher and He-McKellar-Wilkens effects are discussed.
We explore the Dirac equation in external electromagnetic and torsion fields. Motivated by the previous study of quantum field theory in an external torsion field, we include a nonminimal interaction of the spinor field with torsion. As a consequence, the torsion axial vector and the electromagnetic potential enter the action in a similar form. The existence of an extra local symmetry is emphasized and the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is performed to an accuracy of next to the leading order. We also discuss the motion of a classical test particle in a constant torsion field.
A pseudoclassical model, reproducing, upon quantization, the dynamics of the chiral sectors of the massless spin-1/2 field theory is proposed. The discrete symmetries of the action are studied in details. In order to reproduce the positive and negative chiral sectors of the particle and antiparticle, we promote the algebra of functions on the phase space to a bimodule over the complexified quaternions - biquaternions. The quantization is performed by means of strictly canonical methods (Dirac brackets formalism) reproducing the Dirac equation in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation in the parti…
Relativistic wave equation of motion without redundant components for the particle having spin 3/2 has been considered. In order to show the newness a comparison with the known equations for the spin s=3/2 field is given. Therefore, the brief review of the relativistic wave equations for the particle with spin s=3/2 is given. In our equation the wave function for the particle-antiparticle doublet has only 8 components. The consideration is carried out both at the level of relativistic quantum mechanics and at the level of local field theory. The extended Foldy--Wouthuysen transformation, which…
In the semiclassical approximation of Grassmann-valued electric charges for regularizing Coulomb self-energies, we extract the unique acceleration-independent interaction hidden in any Lienard-Wiechert solution for the system of N positive-energy spinning particles plus the electromagnetic field in the radiation gauge of the rest-frame instant form. With the help of a semiclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, this allows us to find the relativistic semiclassical Darwin potential. In the 2-body case the quantization of the lowest order reproduces exactly the results from the reduction of t…
A connection between relativistic quantum mechanics in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and the paraxial equations is established for a Dirac particle in external fields. The paraxial form of the Landau eigenfunction for a relativistic electron in a uniform magnetic field is determined. The obtained wave function contains the Gouy phase and significantly approaches to the paraxial wave function for a free electron.
We discusse a relativistic Hamiltonian for an n-body problem in which all the masses are equal and all spins take value 1/2. In the frame of reference in which the total momentum $vP=0$, the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is applies and the positive energy part of the Hamiltonian is separated. The Hamiltonian with unharmonic oscillator potential is applied to describe mass differences for charmonium and bottonium states.
Relativistic arbitrary spin Hamiltonians are shown to obey the algebraic structure of supersymmetric quantum system if their odd and even parts commute. This condition is identical to that required for the exactness of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. Applied to a massive charged spin-$1$ particle in a constant magnetic field, supersymmetric quantum mechanics necessarily requires a gyromagnetic factor $g=2$.
The pseudoclassical hamiltonian and action of the $D=2n$ dimensional Dirac particle with anomalous magnetic moment interacting with the external Yang-Mills field are found. The Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation of motion for the Pauli-Lubanski vector is deduced. The canonical quantization of $D=2n$ dimensional Dirac spinning particle with anomalous magnetic moment in the external Yang-Mills field is carried out in the gauge which allows to describe simultaneously particles and antiparticles (massive and massless) already at the classical level. Pseudoclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is…
The gravitational effects in the relativistic quantum mechanics are investigated. The exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is constructed for the Dirac particle coupled to the static spacetime metric. As a direct application, we analyze the non-relativistic limit of the theory. The new term describing the specific spin (gravitational moment) interaction effect is recovered in the Hamiltonian. The comparison of the true gravitational coupling with the purely inertial case demonstrates that the spin relativistic effects do not violate the equivalence principle for the Dirac fermions.
The relativistic spin dynamics defined by the pseudoscalar field of dark matter axions is rigorously determined. The relativistic Hamiltonian in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is derived. It agrees with the previously obtained nonrelativistic Hamiltonians and the relativistic classical estimation of the axion wind effect. In the relativistic Hamiltonian, the biggest term describes the extraordinary (three orders of magnitude) enhancement of the axion wind effect in storage ring experiments as compared with experiments with immobile particles. This term defines the spin rotation about the …
In the framework of vector model of spin, we discuss the problem of a covariant formalism \cite{Pomeranskii1998} concerning the discrepancy between relativistic and Pauli Hamiltonians. We show how the spin-induced non commutativity of a position accounts the discrepancy on the classical level, without appeal to the Dirac equation and Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation.
A quantum realization of the Relativistic Harmonic Oscillator is realized in terms of the spatial variable $x$ and ${\d\over \d x}$ (the minimal canonical representation). The eigenstates of the Hamiltonian operator are found (at lower order) by using a perturbation expansion in the constant $c^{-1}$. Unlike the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformed version of the relativistic hydrogen atom, conventional perturbation theory cannot be applied and a perturbation of the scalar product itself is required.
We study the charged and spin currents on a coordinate dependent noncommutative space. Starting from the noncommutative extended relativistic equation of motion, the non-relativistic approximation is obtained by using the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, and then the charged and spin currents are derived by using the extended Drude model. We find that the charged current is twisted by modifying the off-diagonal elements of the Hall conductivity, however, the spin current is not affected up to leading order of the noncommutative parameter.
The semiclassical limit for Dirac particles interacting with a static gravitational field is investigated. A Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation which diagonalizes at the semiclassical order the Dirac equation for an arbitrary static spacetime metric is realized. In this representation the Hamiltonian provides for a coupling between spin and gravity through the torsion of the gravitational field. In the specific case of a symmetric gravitational field we retrieve the Hamiltonian previously found by other authors. But our formalism provides for another effect, namely, the spin hall effect, which wa…
In recent times there has been a renewed interest in the force experienced by a charged-particle with anomalous magnetic moment in the presence of external fields. In this paper we address the basic question of the force experienced by a spin-1/2 point-like charged-particle with magnetic and electric moments in the presence of space-and time-dependent external electromagnetic fields, when derived from the Dirac equation {\em via} the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation technique. It is interesting to note that the force thus derived differs from the ones obtained by various other prescriptions.
Recent experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have indicated that hadrons containing strange quarks produced in non-central heavy ion collisions can be polarized. We investigate in detail the coupling of spin and vorticity for electrically neutral, massive vector bosons using the Proca equation, and provide the nonrelativistic reduction of the field equations via a single Foldy--Wouthuysen transformation. We find that the resulting Hamiltonian is not-Hermitian, but ${\cal PT}$ invariant, and involves a spin dependent term $\textstyle{\frac{1}{2}} …
General relativistic quantum dynamics of twisted (vortex) Dirac particles is constructed. The Hamiltonian and equations of motion in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation are derived for a twisted relativistic electron in arbitrary electric and magnetic fields. A critical experiment for a verification of the results is proposed. The new important effect of a radiative orbital polarization of a twisted electron beam in a magnetic field resulting in a nonzero average projection of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum on the field direction is predicted.
The authors of that work [Phys. Rev. D 88, 084014 (2013)], arXiv:1308.4552, derive quantum-mechanical equations valid for the covariant Dirac equation by restricting the choice of the tetrad field through the use of the "Schwinger gauge". Yet it has been shown previously that this gauge leaves space for a physical ambiguity of the Hamiltonian operator. It is shown here precisely how this ambiguity occurs with their settings. There is another ambiguity in the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian, for the time-dependent case which is relevant here. However, their equations of motion for classical spinni…
We discuss the quantum and classical dynamics of a particle with spin in the gravitational field of a rotating source. A relativistic equation describing the motion of classical spin in curved spacetimes is obtained. We demonstrate that the precession of the classical spin is in a perfect agreement with the motion of the quantum spin derived from the Foldy-Wouthuysen approach for the Dirac particle in a curved spacetime. We show that the precession effect depends crucially on the choice of a tetrad. The results obtained are compared to the earlier computations for different tetrad gauges.
Two different gauge potential methods are engaged to calculate explicitly the spin Hall conductivity in graphene. The graphene Hamiltonian with spin-orbit interaction is expressed in terms of kinematic momenta by introducing a gauge potential. A formulation of the spin Hall conductivity is established by requiring that the time evolution of this kinematic momentum vector vanishes. We then calculated the conductivity employing the Berry gauge fields. We show that both of the gauge fields can be deduced from the pure gauge field arising from the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations.
We develop a many-particle quantum-hydrodynamical model of fermion matter interacting with the external classical electromagnetic and gravitational/inertial and torsion fields. The consistent hydrodynamical formulation is constructed for the many-particle quantum system of Dirac fermions on the basis of the nonrelativistic Pauli-like equation obtained via the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. With the help of the Madelung decomposition approach, the explicit relations between the microscopic and macroscopic fluid variables are derived. The closed system of equations of quantum hydrodynamics enc…
