In this paper we discuss convexity, its average principle, an extrinsic average variational method in the Calculus of Variations, an average method in Partial Differential Equations, a link of convexity to $p$-subharmonicity, subsolutions to the $p$-Laplace equation, uniqueness, existence, isometric immersions in multiple settings. In particular, we show that a convex function on $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a $p$-subharmonic function, for every $p > 1$, and a $C^2$ convex function on a Riemannian manifold is a $p$-subharmonic function $f$, for every $p > 1\, .$ We also show that a $C^2$ convex function which is a submersion on a Riemannian manifold is a $p$-subharmonic function, for every $p \ge 1\, .$ This result is sharp. As further applications, via function growth estimates in $p$-harmonic geometry, we prove that every $p$-balanced nonnegative $C^2$ convex function on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold is constant for $p > 1$. In particular, every $L^q$, nonnegative, convex function of class $C^2$ on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold is constant for $q > p -1 > 0\, .$
We extend Prekopa's Theorem and the Brunn-Minkowski Theorem from convexity to $F$-subharmonicity. We apply this to the interpolation problem of convex functions and convex sets introducing a new notion of "harmonic interpolation" that we view as a generalization of Minkowski-addition.
If $u : Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d \to {\rm X}$ is a harmonic map valued in a metric space ${\rm X}$ and ${\sf E} : {\rm X} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a convex function, in the sense that it generates an ${\rm EVI}_0$-gradient flow, we prove that the pullback ${\sf E} \circ u : Ω\to \mathbb{R}$ is subharmonic. This property was known in the smooth Riemannian manifold setting or with curvature restrictions on ${\rm X}$, while we prove it here in full generality. In addition, we establish generalized maximum principles, in the sense that the $L^q$ norm of ${\sf E} \circ u$ on $\partial Ω$ controls the $L^p$ …
A subequation on an open subset $X\subset \mathbb R^n$ is a subset $F$ of the space of $2$-jets on $X$ with certain properties. A smooth function is said to be $F$-subharmonic if all of its $2$-jets lie in $F$, and using the viscosity technique one can extend the notion of $F$-subharmonicity to any upper-semicontinuous function. Let $\mathcal P$ denote the subequation consisting of those $2$-jets whose Hessian part is semipositive. We introduce a notion of product subequation $F\#\mathcal P$ on $X\times \mathbb R^{m}$ and prove, under suitable hypotheses, that if $F$ is convex and $f(x,y)$ is …
The main result of this paper is a convexity estimate for translating solitons of extrinsic geometric flows which evolve under a $1$-homogeneous concave function in the principal curvatures. In addition, we show examples of these hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for particular functions.
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of Ricci flow that admits an embedded closed convex surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ as metric initial condition. The main point is a family of smooth Ricci flows starting from smooth convex surfaces whose metrics converge uniformly to the metric of the initial surface in intrinsic sense.
We show an iterative method to solve a Dirichlet problem for a Yamabe-type equation in small convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and small balls in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a bounded, convex domain and let $u$ be the solution of $-Δu = 1$ vanishing on the boundary $\partial Ω$. The estimate $$ \| \nabla u\|_{L^{\infty}(Ω)} \leq c |Ω|^{1/2}$$ is classical. We use the P-functional, the stability theory of the torsion function and Brownian motion to establish the estimate for a universal $c < (2π)^{-1/2}$. We also give a numerical construction showing that the optimal constant satisfies $c \geq 0.358$. The problem is important in different settings: (1) as the maximum shear stress in Saint Venant Elasticity Theory, (2) as an optimal co…
We study the generalized eigenvalue problem in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for a general convex nonlinear elliptic operator which is locally elliptic and positively $1$-homogeneous. Generalizing article of Berestycki and Rossi in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 68 (2015), no. 6, 1014-1065] we consider three different notions of generalized eigenvalues and compare them. We also discuss the maximum principles and uniqueness of principal eigenfunctions.
We study an evolution equation that is the gradient flow in the $2$-Wasserstien metric of a non-convex functional for densities in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n \geq 3$. Like the Patlack-Keller-Segel system on $\mathbb{R}^2$, this evolution equation features a competition between the dispersive effects of diffusion, and the accretive effects of a concentrating drift. We determine a parameter range in which the diffusion dominates, and all mass leaves any fixed compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ at an explicit polynomial rate.
