Despite recent advances in 3D human mesh reconstruction, domain gap between training and test data is still a major challenge. Several prior works tackle the domain gap problem via test-time adaptation that fine-tunes a network relying on 2D evidence (e.g., 2D human keypoints) from test images. However, the high reliance on 2D evidence during adaptation causes two major issues. First, 2D evidence induces depth ambiguity, preventing the learning of accurate 3D human geometry. Second, 2D evidence is noisy or partially non-existent during test time, and such imperfect 2D evidence leads to erroneous adaptation. To overcome the above issues, we introduce CycleAdapt, which cyclically adapts two networks: a human mesh reconstruction network (HMRNet) and a human motion denoising network (MDNet), given a test video. In our framework, to alleviate high reliance on 2D evidence, we fully supervise HMRNet with generated 3D supervision targets by MDNet. Our cyclic adaptation scheme progressively elaborates the 3D supervision targets, which compensate for imperfect 2D evidence. As a result, our CycleAdapt achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to previous test-time adaptation methods. The codes are available at https://github.com/hygenie1228/CycleAdapt_RELEASE.
In this paper, we present a HAnd Mesh Recovery (HAMR) framework to tackle the problem of reconstructing the full 3D mesh of a human hand from a single RGB image. In contrast to existing research on 2D or 3D hand pose estimation from RGB or/and depth image data, HAMR can provide a more expressive and useful mesh representation for monocular hand image understanding. In particular, the mesh representation is achieved by parameterizing a generic 3D hand model with shape and relative 3D joint angles. By utilizing this mesh representation, we can easily compute the 3D joint locations via linear int…

We show that by extending the Laplacian formalism, which was first introduced in the Graphics community to regularize 3D meshes, we can turn the monocular 3D shape reconstruction of a deformable surface given correspondences with a reference image into a much better-posed problem. This allows us to quickly and reliably eliminate outliers by simply solving a linear least squares problem. This yields an initial 3D shape estimate, which is not necessarily accurate, but whose 2D projections are. The initial shape is then refined by a constrained optimization problem to output the final surface rec…
We propose to improve on graph convolution based approaches for human shape and pose estimation from monocular input, using pixel-aligned local image features. Given a single input color image, existing graph convolutional network (GCN) based techniques for human shape and pose estimation use a single convolutional neural network (CNN) generated global image feature appended to all mesh vertices equally to initialize the GCN stage, which transforms a template T-posed mesh into the target pose. In contrast, we propose for the first time the idea of using local image features per vertex. These f…

Recovering a textured 3D mesh from a monocular image is highly challenging, particularly for in-the-wild objects that lack 3D ground truths. In this work, we present MeshInversion, a novel framework to improve the reconstruction by exploiting the generative prior of a 3D GAN pre-trained for 3D textured mesh synthesis. Reconstruction is achieved by searching for a latent space in the 3D GAN that best resembles the target mesh in accordance with the single view observation. Since the pre-trained GAN encapsulates rich 3D semantics in terms of mesh geometry and texture, searching within the GAN ma…

Supervised learning methods to infer (hypothesize) depth of a scene from a single image require costly per-pixel ground-truth. We follow a geometric approach that exploits abundant stereo imagery to learn a model to hypothesize scene structure without direct supervision. Although we train a network with stereo pairs, we only require a single image at test time to hypothesize disparity or depth. We propose a novel objective function that exploits the bilateral cyclic relationship between the left and right disparities and we introduce an adaptive regularization scheme that allows the network to…

This paper focuses on the regression of multiple 3D people from a single RGB image. Existing approaches predominantly follow a multi-stage pipeline that first detects people in bounding boxes and then independently regresses their 3D body meshes. In contrast, we propose to Regress all meshes in a One-stage fashion for Multiple 3D People (termed ROMP). The approach is conceptually simple, bounding box-free, and able to learn a per-pixel representation in an end-to-end manner. Our method simultaneously predicts a Body Center heatmap and a Mesh Parameter map, which can jointly describe the 3D bod…

We describe an end-to-end method for recovering 3D human body mesh from single images and monocular videos. Different from the existing methods try to obtain all the complex 3D pose, shape, and camera parameters from one coupling feature, we propose a skeleton-disentangling based framework, which divides this task into multi-level spatial and temporal granularity in a decoupling manner. In spatial, we propose an effective and pluggable "disentangling the skeleton from the details" (DSD) module. It reduces the complexity and decouples the skeleton, which lays a good foundation for temporal mode…

We present a novel paradigm of building an animatable 3D human representation from a monocular video input, such that it can be rendered in any unseen poses and views. Our method is based on a dynamic Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) rigged by a mesh-based parametric 3D human model serving as a geometry proxy. Previous methods usually rely on multi-view videos or accurate 3D geometry information as additional inputs; besides, most methods suffer from degraded quality when generalized to unseen poses. We identify that the key to generalization is a good input embedding for querying dynamic NeRF: A …
Recovering 3D human mesh from monocular images is a popular topic in computer vision and has a wide range of applications. This paper aims to estimate 3D mesh of multiple body parts (e.g., body, hands) with large-scale differences from a single RGB image. Existing methods are mostly based on iterative optimization, which is very time-consuming. We propose to train a single-shot model to achieve this goal. The main challenge is lacking training data that have complete 3D annotations of all body parts in 2D images. To solve this problem, we design a multi-branch framework to disentangle the regr…
In this work, we propose a framework for single-view hand mesh reconstruction, which can simultaneously achieve high reconstruction accuracy, fast inference speed, and temporal coherence. Specifically, for 2D encoding, we propose lightweight yet effective stacked structures. Regarding 3D decoding, we provide an efficient graph operator, namely depth-separable spiral convolution. Moreover, we present a novel feature lifting module for bridging the gap between 2D and 3D representations. This module begins with a map-based position regression (MapReg) block to integrate the merits of both heatmap…
We present an end-to-end neural network-based model for inferring an approximate 3D mesh representation of a human face from single camera input for AR applications. The relatively dense mesh model of 468 vertices is well-suited for face-based AR effects. The proposed model demonstrates super-realtime inference speed on mobile GPUs (100-1000+ FPS, depending on the device and model variant) and a high prediction quality that is comparable to the variance in manual annotations of the same image.
Advances in Deep Learning have recently made it possible to recover full 3D meshes of human poses from individual images. However, extension of this notion to videos for recovering temporally coherent poses still remains unexplored. A major challenge in this regard is the lack of appropriately annotated video data for learning the desired deep models. Existing human pose datasets only provide 2D or 3D skeleton joint annotations, whereas the datasets are also recorded in constrained environments. We first contribute a technique to synthesize monocular action videos with rich 3D annotations that…

3D interacting hand reconstruction is essential to facilitate human-machine interaction and human behaviors understanding. Previous works in this field either rely on auxiliary inputs such as depth images or they can only handle a single hand if monocular single RGB images are used. Single-hand methods tend to generate collided hand meshes, when applied to closely interacting hands, since they cannot model the interactions between two hands explicitly. In this paper, we make the first attempt to reconstruct 3D interacting hands from monocular single RGB images. Our method can generate 3D hand …

3D hand pose estimation and shape recovery are challenging tasks in computer vision. We introduce a novel framework HandTailor, which combines a learning-based hand module and an optimization-based tailor module to achieve high-precision hand mesh recovery from a monocular RGB image. The proposed hand module unifies perspective projection and weak perspective projection in a single network towards accuracy-oriented and in-the-wild scenarios. The proposed tailor module then utilizes the coarsely reconstructed mesh model provided by the hand module as initialization, and iteratively optimizes an…
Structure from Motion (SfM) often fails to estimate accurate poses in environments that lack suitable visual features. In such cases, the quality of the final 3D mesh, which is contingent on the accuracy of those estimates, is reduced. One way to overcome this problem is to combine data from a monocular camera with that of a LIDAR. This allows fine details and texture to be captured while still accurately representing featureless subjects. However, fusing these two sensor modalities is challenging due to their fundamentally different characteristics. Rather than directly fusing image features …

We introduce MulayCap, a novel human performance capture method using a monocular video camera without the need for pre-scanning. The method uses "multi-layer" representations for geometry reconstruction and texture rendering, respectively. For geometry reconstruction, we decompose the clothed human into multiple geometry layers, namely a body mesh layer and a garment piece layer. The key technique behind is a Garment-from-Video (GfV) method for optimizing the garment shape and reconstructing the dynamic cloth to fit the input video sequence, based on a cloth simulation model which is effectiv…

We present a simple, real-time approach for pupil tracking from live video on mobile devices. Our method extends a state-of-the-art face mesh detector with two new components: a tiny neural network that predicts positions of the pupils in 2D, and a displacement-based estimation of the pupil blend shape coefficients. Our technique can be used to accurately control the pupil movements of a virtual puppet, and lends liveliness and energy to it. The proposed approach runs at over 50 FPS on modern phones, and enables its usage in any real-time puppeteering pipeline.

We propose SelfRecon, a clothed human body reconstruction method that combines implicit and explicit representations to recover space-time coherent geometries from a monocular self-rotating human video. Explicit methods require a predefined template mesh for a given sequence, while the template is hard to acquire for a specific subject. Meanwhile, the fixed topology limits the reconstruction accuracy and clothing types. Implicit representation supports arbitrary topology and can represent high-fidelity geometry shapes due to its continuous nature. However, it is difficult to integrate multi-fr…

The training of deep-learning-based 3D object detectors requires large datasets with 3D bounding box labels for supervision that have to be generated by hand-labeling. We propose a network architecture and training procedure for learning monocular 3D object detection without 3D bounding box labels. By representing the objects as triangular meshes and employing differentiable shape rendering, we define loss functions based on depth maps, segmentation masks, and ego- and object-motion, which are generated by pre-trained, off-the-shelf networks. We evaluate the proposed algorithm on the real-worl…
We present a method for learning 3D geometry and physics parameters of a dynamic scene from only a monocular RGB video input. To decouple the learning of underlying scene geometry from dynamic motion, we represent the scene as a time-invariant signed distance function (SDF) which serves as a reference frame, along with a time-conditioned deformation field. We further bridge this neural geometry representation with a differentiable physics simulator by designing a two-way conversion between the neural field and its corresponding hexahedral mesh, enabling us to estimate physics parameters from t…

Existing neural human rendering methods struggle with a single image input due to the lack of information in invisible areas and the depth ambiguity of pixels in visible areas. In this regard, we propose Monocular Neural Human Renderer (MonoNHR), a novel approach that renders robust free-viewpoint images of an arbitrary human given only a single image. MonoNHR is the first method that (i) renders human subjects never seen during training in a monocular setup, and (ii) is trained in a weakly-supervised manner without geometry supervision. Monocular 3D reconstruction of articulated object categories is challenging due to the lack of training data and the inherent ill-posedness of the problem. In this work we use video self-supervision, forcing the consistency of consecutive 3D reconstructions by a motion-based cycle loss. This largely improves both optimization-based and learning-based 3D mesh reconstruction. We further introduce an interpretable model of 3D template deformations that controls a 3D surface through the displacement of a small number of local, learnable handles. We formulate this operation as a structured layer re…

We propose an efficient method for non-rigid surface tracking from monocular RGB videos. Given a video and a template mesh, our algorithm sequentially registers the template non-rigidly to each frame. We formulate the per-frame registration as an optimization problem that includes a novel texture term specifically tailored towards tracking objects with uniform texture but fine-scale structure, such as the regular micro-structural patterns of fabric. Our texture term exploits the orientation information in the micro-structures of the objects, e.g., the yarn patterns of fabrics. This enables us …

3D human motion capture from monocular RGB images respecting interactions of a subject with complex and possibly deformable environments is a very challenging, ill-posed and under-explored problem. Existing methods address it only weakly and do not model possible surface deformations often occurring when humans interact with scene surfaces. In contrast, this paper proposes MoCapDeform, i.e., a new framework for monocular 3D human motion capture that is the first to explicitly model non-rigid deformations of a 3D scene for improved 3D human pose estimation and deformable environment reconstruct…
