We introduce a new chemical enrichment and stellar feedback model into GIZMO, using the SIMBA sub-grid models as a base. Based on the state-of-the-art chemical evolution model of Kobayashi et al., SIMBA-C tracks 34 elements from H$\rightarrow$Ge and removes SIMBA's instantaneous recycling approximation. Furthermore, we make some minor improvements to SIMBA's base feedback models. SIMBA-C provides significant improvements on key diagnostics such as the knee of the $z=0$ galaxy stellar mass function, the faint end of the main sequence, and the ability to track black holes in dwarf galaxies. SIMBA-C also matches better with recent observations of the mass-metallicity relation at $z=0,2$. By not assuming instantaneous recycling, SIMBA-C provides a much better match to galactic abundance ratio measures such as [O/Fe] and [N/O]. SIMBA-C thus opens up new avenues to constrain feedback models using detailed chemical abundance measures across cosmic time.
A wide range of mechanisms have been put forward to explain the quenching of star formation in galaxies with cosmic time, however, the true balance of responsible mechanisms remains unknown. The identification and study of galaxies that have shut down their star formation on different timescales might elucidate which mechanisms dominate at different epochs and masses. Here we study the population of rapidly quenched galaxies (RQGs) in the SIMBA cosmological hydrodynamic simulation at $0.5<z<2$, comparing directly to observational post-starburst galaxies in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey via thei…
We examine the evolution of intragroup gas X-ray scaling relations for group-sized halos ($M_{500}=10^{12.3-15}M_{\odot}$) in the Simba galaxy formation simulation. X-ray luminosity $L_X$ vs $M_{500}$ shows increasing deviation from self-similarity from $z=3\to 0$, with $M_{500}<10^{13.5} M_{\odot}$ halos exhibiting a large reduction in $L_X$ and slight increase in X-ray luminosity-weighted temperature $T_X$. These shifts are driven by a strong drop in $f_{\rm gas}$ with time for these halos, and coincides with the onset of black hole jet feedback in these systems at $z\sim 1.5$ in Simba. The …
We study the photometric properties and sizes of the reionization-epoch galaxies in high-resolution Simba cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with box sizes of $[25,50]~h^{-1}$Mpc. Assuming various attenuation laws, we compute photometry by extincting each star particle's spectrum using the line-of-sight gas metal column density. The predicted ultraviolet luminosity function (UVLF) generally agrees with observations at $z=6$, owing to a partial cancellation between the high metallicities of the simulated galaxies and lower dust-to-metal ratios. The simulated $z=8$ UVLF is low compared to o…
Nitrogen-bearing molecules in cold molecular clouds exhibit a range of isotopic fractionation ratios and these molecules may be the precursors of $^{15}$N enrichments found in comets and meteorites. Chemical model calculations indicate that atom-molecular ion and ion-molecule reactions could account for most of the fractionation patterns observed. However, recent quantum-chemical computations demonstrate that several of the key processes are unlikely to occur in dense clouds. Related model calculations of dense cloud chemistry show that the revised $^{15}$N enrichments fail to match observed v…
We use deep spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide-Field-Camera 3 (WFC3) IR grisms combined with broad-band photometry to study the stellar populations, gas ionization and chemical abundances in star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 1.1-2.3$. The data stem from the CANDELS Lyman-$α$ Emission At Reionization (CLEAR) survey. At these redshifts the grism spectroscopy measure the [OII] 3727, 3729, [OIII] 4959, 5008, H-$β$ strong emission features, which constrain the ionization parameter and oxygen abundance of the nebular gas. We compare the line flux measurements to predictions from u…

We present an updated release of the BaSTI (a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones) stellar model and isochrone library for a solar scaled heavy element distribution. The main input physics changed from the previous BaSTI release include the solar metal mixture, electron conduction opacities, a few nuclear reaction rates, bolometric corrections, and the treatment of the overshooting efficiency for shrinking convective cores. The new model calculations cover a mass range between 0.1 and 15 Msun, 22 initial chemical compositions between [Fe/H]=-3.20 and +0.45, with helium to metal enrichment rat…
We have updated the Munich galaxy formation model, L-Galaxies, to follow the radial distributions of stars and atomic and molecular gas in galaxy discs. We include an H2-based star-formation law, as well as a detailed chemical-enrichment model with explicit mass-dependent delay times for SN-II, SN-Ia and AGB stars. Information about the star formation, feedback and chemical-enrichment histories of discs is stored in 12 concentric rings. The new model retains the success of its predecessor in reproducing the observed evolution of the galaxy population, in particular, stellar mass functions and …
(ABRIDGED) We use the 17th data release of the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) to provide a homogenous census of N-rich red giant stars across the Milky Way (MW). We report a total of 149 newly identified N-rich field giants toward the bulge, metal-poor disk, and halo of our Galaxy. They exhibit significant enrichment in their nitrogen abundance ratios ([N/Fe] $\gtrsim+0.5$), along with simultaneous depletions in their [C/Fe] abundance ratios ([C/Fe] $< +0.15$), and they cover a wide range of metallicities ($-1.8 < $ [Fe/H] $ <-0.7$). The f…
The dust-to-stellar mass ratio ($M_{\rm dust}$/$M_{\rm \star}$) is a crucial yet poorly constrained quantity to understand the production mechanisms of dust, metals and stars in galaxy evolution. In this work we explore and interpret the nature of $M_{\rm dust}$/$M_{\rm \star}$ in 300 massive ($M_{\star}>10^{10}M_{\odot}$), dusty star-forming galaxies detected with ALMA up to $z\approx5$. We find that $M_{\rm dust}$/$M_{\rm \star}$ evolves with redshift, stellar mass, specific SFR and integrated dust size, differently for main sequence and starburst galaxies. In both galaxy populations $M_{\rm…
We propose an updated dust evolution model that focuses on the grain size distribution in a galaxy. We treat the galaxy as a one-zone object and include five main processes (stellar dust production, dust destruction in supernova shocks, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering). In this paper, we improve the predictions related to small carbonaceous grains, which are responsible for the 2175 Å bump in the extinction curve and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features in the dust emission spectral energy distribution (SED), both of which we…
Isotope ratios have opened a new window into the study of the details of stellar evolution, supernovae, and galactic chemical evolution. We present the evolution of the isotope ratios of elemental abundances (from C to Zn) in the solar neighbourhood, bulge, halo, and thick disk, using chemical evolution models with updated yields of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and core-collapse supernovae. The evolutionary history of each element is different owing to the effects of the initial progenitor mass and metallicity on element production. In the bulge and thick disk the star formation timesca…
We summarize the updated set of multiphase chemical evolution models performed with 44 theoretical radial mass initial distributions and 10 possible values of efficiencies to form molecular clouds and stars. We present the results about the infall rate histories, the formation of the disk, and the evolution of the radial distributions of diffuse and molecular gas surface density, stellar profile, star formation rate surface density and elemental abundances of C,N, O and Fe, finding that the radial gradients for these elements begin very steeper, and flatten with increasing time or decreasing r…
We introduce an updated physical model to simulate the formation and evolution of galaxies in cosmological, large-scale gravity+magnetohydrodynamical simulations with the moving mesh code AREPO. The overall framework builds upon the successes of the Illustris galaxy formation model, and includes prescriptions for star formation, stellar evolution, chemical enrichment, primordial and metal-line cooling of the gas, stellar feedback with galactic outflows, and black hole formation, growth and multi-mode feedback. In this paper we give a comprehensive description of the physical and numerical adva…
We have constructed the database of stars in the local group using the extended version of the SAGA (Stellar Abundances for Galactic Archaeology) database that contains stars in 24 dwarf spheroidal galaxies and ultra faint dwarfs. The new version of the database includes more than 4500 stars in the Milky Way, by removing the previous metallicity criterion of [Fe/H] <= -2.5, and more than 6000 stars in the local group galaxies. We examined a validity of using a combined data set for elemental abundances. We also checked a consistency between the derived distances to individual stars and those t…
