I point out that the $U(N)$ Chern-Simons $3d$ theory coupled to fermions at finite temperature and at a specific mean field approximation and the $3d$ Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential can give us the same results for the thermodynamic values of the free-energy and the saddle point equation for the thermal mass. I further argue that the periodic structure of the imaginary chemical potential brings also Bloch's theorem into the game. Namely, the vacuum structure of the fermionic system with imaginary baryon density is a Bloch wave. I further emphasise that Bloch waves correspond to fermionic (antisymmetric) or bosonic (symmetric) quasi-particles depending on the point in the band one sits in.
We derive an equivalence between the (2,0) superconformal M5-brane field theory dimensionally reduced on a squashed three-sphere, and Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group. In the reduction, the massless fermions obtain an action which is second order in derivatives and are reinterpreted as ghosts for gauge fixing the emergent non-compact gauge symmetry. A squashing parameter in the geometry controls the imaginary part of the complex Chern-Simons level.
It is built a map between an Abelian Topological Quantum Field Theory, $2+1D$ compact U(1) gauge Maxwell Chern-Simons Theory and the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics Azbel-Hofstadter model of Bloch electrons. The $U_q(sl_2)$ quantum group and the magnetic translations group of the Azbel-Hofstadter model correspond to discretized subgroups of U(1) with linear gauge parameters. The magnetic monopole confining and condensate phases in the Topological Quantum Field Theory are identified with the extended (energy bands) and localized (gaps) phases of the Bloch electron. The magnetic monopole conde…
We study the three-dimensional $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu and CP$^{N-1}$ models in the canonical formalism with fixed $U(1)$ charge. For large-$N$ this is closely related to coupling the models to abelian Chern-Simons in a monopole background. We show that the presence of the imaginary chemical potential for the $U(1)$ charge makes the phase structure of the models remarkably similar. We calculate their respective large-$N$ free energy densities and show that they are mapped into each other in a precise way. Intriguingly, the free energy map involves the Bloch-Wigner function and its generalizations i…
The self-dual Chern-Simons solitons under the influence of the quantum potential are considered. The single-valuedness condition for an arbitrary integer number $N \ge 0$ of solitons leads to quantization of Chern-Simons coupling constant $κ= m {e^{2} \over g}$, and the integer strength of quantum potential $s = 1 - m^{2}$. As we show, the Jackiw-Pi model corresponds to the first member (m = 1) of our hierarchy of the Chern-Simons gauged nonlinear Schrödinger models, admitting self-dual solitons. New type of exponentially localized Chern-Simons solitons for the Bloch electrons near the hyperbo…
For the periodic sphaleron potential in the electroweak theory, we find the one-dimensional time-independent Schrödinger equation with the Chern-Simons number as the coordinate, construct the Bloch wave function and determine the corresponding conducting (pass) band structure. We show that the baryon-lepton number violating processes can take place without the exponential tunneling suppression (at zero temperature) at energies around and above the barrier height (sphaleron energy) at 9.0 TeV. Phenomenologically, probable detection of such processes at LHC is discussed.
We study a sector of the 5d maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^5$ consisting of $1/8$-BPS Wilson loop operators contained within a great $S^3$ inside $S^5$. We conjecture that these observables are described by a 3d Chern Simons theory on $S^3$, analytically continued to a pure imaginary Chern-Simons level. Therefore, the expectation values of these 5d Wilson loops compute knot invariants. We verify this conjecture in the weakly-coupled regime from explicit Feynman diagram computations. At strong coupling, these Wilson loop operators lift to $1/8$-BPS surface operators in the 6d …
Starting from the generating functional of the theory of relativistic spinors in 2+1 dimensions interacting through the pure Chern-Simons gauge field, the S-matrix is constructed and seen to be formally the same as that of spinor quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions with Feynman diagrams having external photon lines excluded, and with the propagator of the topological Chern-Simons photon substituted for the Maxwell photon propagator. It is shown that the absence of real topological photons in the complete set of vector states of the total Hilbert space leads in a given order of perturbati…
We examine finite temperature perturbation theory for Chern-Simons theories, in the context of an analogue 0+1-dimensional model. In particular, we show how nonextensive terms arise in the perturbative finite temperature effective action, using both the real-time and imaginary-time formalisms. We illustrate how large gauge invariance is restored at all orders, despite being broken at any given order in perturbation theory. We discuss which aspects generalize to a perturbative analysis of finite temperature Chern-Simons terms in higher dimensions.
Continuing the work arXiv:1603.06207, we study perturbative series in general 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theory with $U(1)_R$ symmetry, which is given by a power series expansion of inverse Chern-Simons levels. We find that the perturbative series are usually non-Borel summable along positive real axis for various observables. Alternatively we prove that the perturbative series are always Borel summable along negative (positive) imaginary axis for positive (negative) Chern-Simons levels. It turns out that the Borel resummations along this direction are the same as ex…
We construct a lattice model of compact (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Chern- Simons theory, starting from its formulation in terms of gauge invariant quantities proposed by Deser and Jackiw. We thereby identify the topological excitations and their interactions. These consist of monopolo- antimonopole pairs bounded by strings carrying both magnetic flux and electric charge. The electric charge renders the Dirac strings observable and endows them with a finite energy per unit length, which results in a linearly confining string tension. Additionally, the strings interact via an imaginary, topologic…
The cvariant path integral quantization of the theory of the scalar and spinor particles interacting through the abelian and non-Abelian Chern-Simons gauge fields is carried out and is shown to be mathematically ill defined due to the absence of the transverse components of these gauge fields. This is remedied by the introduction of the Maxwell or the Maxwell-type (in the non-Abelian case)term which makes the theory superrenormalizable and guarantees its gauge-invariant regularization and renormalization. The generating functionals are constructed and shown to be formally the same as those of …
Recently it was shown that the quantum vacuum effects of massless chiral fermion field in curved space-time leads to the parity-violating Pontryagin density term, which appears in the trace anomaly with imaginary coefficient. In the present work the anomaly-induced effective action with the parity-violating term is derived. The result is similar to the Chern-Simons modified general relativity, which was extensively studied in the last decade, but with the kinetic terms for the scalar different from those considered previously in the literature. The parity-breaking term makes no effect on the z…
In this paper we evaluate the induced Lorentz and CPT violating Chern-Simons term in the QED action at finite temperature. We do this using the method of derivative expansion of fermion determinants. Also, we use the imaginary-time formalism to calculate the temperature dependence of the Chern-Simons term
We use the relation between 2d Yang-Mills and Brownian motion to show that 2d Yang-Mills on the cylinder is related to Chern-Simons theory in a class of lens spaces. Alternatively, this can be regarded as 2dYM computing certain correlators in conformal field theory. We find that the partition function of 2dYM reduces to an operator of the type U=ST^pS in Chern-Simons theory for specific values of the YM coupling but finite k and N. U is the operator from which one obtains the partition function of Chern-Simons on S^3/Z_p, as well as expectation values of Wilson loops. The correspondence involv…
In the pseudo-euclidean metrics Chern-Simons gauge theory in the infrared region is found to be associated with dissipative dynamics. In the infrared limit the Lagrangian of 2+1 dimensional pseudo-euclidean topologically massive electrodynamics has indeed the same form of the Lagrangian of the damped harmonic oscillator. On the hyperbolic plane a set of two damped harmonic oscillators, each other time-reversed, is shown to be equivalent to a single undamped harmonic oscillator. The equations for the damped oscillators are proven to be the same as the ones for the Lorentz force acting on two pa…
We prove the universality of the Chern-Simons diffusion rate - a crucial observable for the chiral magnetic effect - in a large class of planar strongly correlated gauge theories with dual string description. When the effects of anomalies are suppressed, the diffusion rate is simply given in terms of temperature, entropy density and gauge coupling, with a universal numerical coefficient. We show that this result holds, in fact, for all the top-down holographic models where the calculation has been performed in the past, even in presence of magnetic fields and anisotropy. We also extend the che…
Using Bloch-Nordsieck approximation fermion propagator in 3-dimensional gauge theory with topological mass is studied. Infrared divergence of Chern-Simon term is soft, which modifies anomalous dimension. In unquenched QCD with 2-component spinor anomalous dimension has fractional value, where order parmeter is divergent.
We propose that the Chern-Simons invariant of the Ashtekar-Sen connection is the natural internal time coordinate for classical and quantum cosmology. The reasons for this are a number of interesting properties of this functional, which we describe here. 1)It is a function on the gauge and diffeomorphism invariant configuration space, whose gradient is orthogonal to the two physical degrees of freedom, in the metric defined by the Ashtekar formulation of general relativity. 2)The imaginary part of the Chern-Simons form reduces in the limit of small cosmological constant, $Λ$, and solutions clo…
We perform a series of dimensional reductions of the 6d, $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFT on $S^2\timesΣ\times I\times S^1$ down to 2d on $Σ$. The reductions are performed in three steps: (i) a reduction on $S^1$ (accompanied by a topological twist along $Σ$) leading to a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^2\timesΣ\times I$, (ii) a further reduction on $S^2$ resulting in a complex Chern--Simons theory defined on $Σ\times I$, with the real part of the complex Chern-Simons level being zero, and the imaginary part being proportional to the ratio of the radii of $S^2$ and $S^1$, and (iii) a final redu…
Using perturbation theory in the Euclidean (imaginary time) formalism as well as the non-perturbative Fujikawa method, we verify that the chiral anomaly equation remains unaffected in the presence of nonzero chemical potential, $μ$. We extend our considerations to fermions with exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and discuss the consequences for the recent Bloch-Wettig proposal for the Dirac operator at finite chemical potential. We propose a new simpler method of incorporating $μ$ and compare it with the Bloch-Wettig idea.
I point out that the phase transitions of the $d+1$ Gross-Neveu and $CP^{N-1}$ models at finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential can be mapped to transformations of regular hexagonal and regular triangular lattices to square lattice. The duality elements of two continuous models of fermions and bosons and two discrete lattice models make their appearance offering a new view of their phase transitions. I also show that the fermion-boson map in odd dimensions at finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential has a generalization for arbitrary $d$ that gives an expression of the …
We show that the Chern-Simons (CS) state when reduced to mini-superspace is the Fourier dual of the Hartle-Hawking (HH) and Vilenkin (V) wave-functions of the Universe. This is to be expected, given that the former and latter solve the same constraint equation, written in terms of conjugate variables (loosely the expansion factor and the Hubble parameter). A number of subtleties in the mapping, related to the contour of integration of the connection, shed light on the issue of boundary conditions in quantum cosmology. If we insist on a {\it real} Hubble parameter, then only the HH wave-functio…
We identify a large class R of three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories. This class includes the effective theories T_M of M5-branes wrapped on 3-manifolds M, discussed in previous work by the authors, and more generally comprises theories that admit a UV description as abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories with (possibly non-perturbative) superpotential. Mathematically, class R might be viewed as an extreme quantum generalization of the Bloch group; in particular, the equivalence relation among theories in class R is a quantum-field-theoretic "2-3 move." We proceed to study the supe…
We obtain the induced Lorentz- and CPT-violating term in QED at finite temperature using imaginary-time formalism and dimensional regularization. Its form resembles a Chern-Simons-like structure, but, unexpectedly, it does not depend on the temporal component of the fixed $b_μ$ constant vector that is coupled to the axial current. Nevertheless Ward identities are respected and its coefficient vanishes at T=0, consistently with previous computations with the same regularization procedure, and it is a non-trivial function of temperature. We argue that at finite $T$ a Chern-Simons-like Lorentz- a…
