Flattened and kinematically correlated planes of dwarf satellite galaxies have been observed in the Local Volume. The slinging out of satellites during host galaxy mergers has been suggested as a formation mechanism for these peculiar structures. We statistically examined the impact of major mergers on present-time satellite systems for the first time in a full cosmological context using the IllustrisTNG suite of hydrodynamic simulations. Mergers with mass ratios above 1/3 generally have a negligible or adverse impact on the phase-space correlation of observationally motivated satellites. Even high-angular momentum mergers are inefficient at slinging satellites outward due to the extended nature of simulated satellite distributions. Furthermore, any potential merger imprint is partially washed out by post-merger accretion of satellites, while satellites bound to the merging haloes since the merger's beginning are disrupted and stripped of mass - minimising the merger's influence on the present-time distribution of the most massive satellites after 2-5 Gyr. Constraining our sample to satellites bound to their host throughout the full duration of their system's last merger, we recover no particular improvement in their phase-space correlation. Instead, such participant satellites experience a contraction of their radial distribution during and after the merger, resulting in smaller absolute plane heights (but comparable axis ratios). Overall, major mergers do not appear to form correlated planes in a statistical sample. Mergers that efficiently transfer their angular momentum to satellite distributions can marginally enhance their phase-space correlation, but cannot form highly flattened and orbitally coherent configurations as observed in our local Universe.
We study the statistical properties of mergers between central and satellite galaxies in galaxy clusters in the redshift range $0<z<1$, using a sample of dark-matter only cosmological N-body simulations from Le SBARBINE dataset. Using a spherical overdensity algorithm to identify dark-matter haloes, we construct halo merger trees for different values of the over-density $Δ_c$. While the virial overdensity definition allows us to probe the accretion of satellites at the cluster virial radius $r_{vir}$, higher overdensities probe satellite mergers in the central region of the cluster, down to $\…
The Disk of Satellites (DoS) observed in the Andromeda galaxy is a thin and extended group of satellites, nearly perpendicular to the disk plane, that share a common direction of rotation about the centre of Andromeda. Although a DoS is also observed in the Milky Way galaxy, the prevalance of such structures in more distant galaxies remains controversial. Explanations for the formation of such DoSs vary widely from filamentary infall, or flattening due to the potential field from large scale structure, to galaxy interactions in a Mondian paradigm. Here we present an alternative scenario -- dur…
Mergers are a common phenomenon in hierarchical structure formation, especially for massive galaxies and clusters, but their importance for dwarf galaxies in the Local Group remains poorly understood. We investigate the frequency of major mergers between dwarf galaxies in the Local Group using the ELVIS suite of cosmological zoom-in dissipationless simulations of Milky Way- and M31-like host halos. We find that ~10% of satellite dwarf galaxies with M_star > 10^6 M_sun that are within the host virial radius experienced a major merger of stellar mass ratio closer than 0.1 since z = 1, with a low…
With the goal to refine modelling of shell galaxies and the use of shells to probe the merger history, we develop a new method for implementing dynamical friction in test-particle simulations of radial minor mergers. The friction is combined with a gradual decay of the dwarf galaxy. The coupling of both effects can considerably redistribute positions and luminosities of shells; neglecting them can lead to significant errors in attempts to date the merger.
The cosmic web plays a major role in the formation and evolution of galaxies and defines, to a large extent, their properties. However, the relation between galaxies and environment is still not well understood. Here we present a machine learning approach to study imprints of environmental effects on the mass assembly of haloes. We present a galaxy-LSS machine learning classifier based on galaxy properties sensitive to the environment. We then use the classifier to assess the relevance of each property. Correlations between galaxy properties and their cosmic environment can be used to predict …
We investigate whether the considerable diversity in the satellite populations of nearby Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies is connected with the diversity in their host's merger histories. Analyzing 8 nearby galaxies with extensive observations of their satellite populations and stellar halos, we characterize each galaxy's merger history using the metric of its most dominant merger, $M_{\rm \star,Dom}$, defined as the greater of either its total accreted stellar mass or most massive current satellite. We find an unexpectedly tight relationship between these galaxies' number of $M_{V}\,{<}\,{-}9$ sa…
The low-mass low-surface brightness (LSB) disc galaxy Arakelian 18 (Ark 18) resides in the Eridanus void and because of its isolation represents an ideal case to study the formation and evolution mechanisms of such a galaxy type. Its complex structure consists of an extended blue LSB disc and a bright central elliptically-shaped part hosting a massive off-centered star-forming clump. We present the in-depth study of Ark 18 based on observations with the SCORPIO-2 long-slit spectrograph and a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer at the Russian 6-m telescope complemented by archival multi-wavelen…
We consider the orbital evolution of satellites in galaxy mergers, focusing on the evolution of eccentricity. Using a large suite of N-body simulations, we study the phenomenon of satellite orbital radialization -- a profound increase in the eccentricity of its orbit as it decays under dynamical friction. While radialization is detected in a variety of different setups, it is most efficient in the cases of high satellite mass, not very steep host density profiles, and high initial eccentricity. To understand the origin of this phenomenon, we run additional simulations with various physical fac…
Minor merger of galaxies are common during the evolutionary phase of galaxies. Here, we investigate the dynamical impact of a minor merger (mass ratio 1:10) event on the final fate of a stellar bar in the merger remnant. To achieve that, we choose a set of minor merger models from the publicly available GalMer library of galaxy merger simulations. The models differ in terms of their orbital energy, orientation of the orbital spin vector, and morphology of the satellite galaxy (discy/spheroidal). We demonstrate that the central stellar bar, initially present in the host galaxy, undergoes a tran…
In the context of the current $Λ$CDM cosmological model small dark matter haloes are abundant and satellites of dwarf galaxies are expected to be predominantly dark. Since low mass galaxies have smaller baryon fractions interactions with these satellites may leave particularly dramatic imprints. We uncover the influence of the most massive of these dark satellites on disky dwarf galaxies and the possible dynamical and morphological transformations that result from these interactions. We use a suite of carefully set-up, controlled simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies. The primary dwarf galaxi…
A literature compilation of nuclear star cluster (NSC) masses is used to study the correlation between global and nuclear properties. A comparison of observational data to the predictions of semi-analytical galaxy formation models places constraints on the co-evolution of NSCs, massive black holes (MBHs) and host galaxies. Both data and theoretical predictions show an increased scatter in the NSC scaling correlations at high galaxy masses, and we show that this is due to the progressively more efficient ejection of stars from NSCs caused by MBH binaries in more massive stellar spheroids. Our r…
The properties of elliptical galaxies are broadly consistent with simulated remnants of gas-rich mergers between spirals, motivating more detailed studies of the imprint of this formation mechanism on the remnant distribution function. Gas has a strong impact on the non-Gaussian shapes of the line-of-sight velocity distributions (LOSVDs) of the merger remnant, owing to the embedded disk that forms out of the gas that retains its angular momentum during the merger, and the strong central mass concentration from the gas that falls to the center. The deviations from Gaussianity are parametrized b…
The (re)ionisation of hydrogen in the early universe has a profound effect on the formation of the first galaxies: by raising the gas temperature and pressure, it prevents gas from cooling into small haloes thus affecting the abundance of present-day small galaxies. Using the Galform semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, we show that two key aspects of the reionisation process -- when reionisation takes place and the characteristic scale below which it suppresses galaxy formation -- are imprinted in the luminosity function of dwarf galaxies. We focus on the luminosity function of satellites…
We investigate the environmental dependence of the stellar populations of galaxies in SDSS DR7. Echoing earlier works, we find that satellites are both more metal-rich (<0.1 dex) and older (<2 Gyr) than centrals of the same stellar mass. However, after separating star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies, we find that the true environmental dependence of both stellar metallicity (<0.03 dex) and age (<0.5 Gyr) is in fact much weaker. We show that the strong environmental effects found when galaxies are not differentiated result from a combination of selection effects brought about by the …
The Milky Way halo was predominantly formed by the merging of numerous progenitor galaxies. However, our knowledge of this process is still incomplete, especially in regard to the total number of mergers, their global dynamical properties and their contribution to the stellar population of the Galactic halo. Here, we uncover the Milky Way mergers by detecting groupings of globular clusters, stellar streams and satellite galaxies in action ($\mathbf{J}$) space. While actions fully characterize the orbits, we additionally use the redundant information on their energy ($\textit{E}$) to enhance th…
We investigate the influence of stellar migration caused by minor mergers (mass ratio from 1:70 to 1:8) on the radial distribution of chemical abundances in the disks of Milky Way-like galaxies during the last four Gyr. A GPU-based pure N-body tree-code model without hydrodynamics and star formation was used. We computed a large set of mergers with different initial satellite masses, positions, and orbital velocities. We find that there is no significant metallicity change at any radius of the primary galaxy in the case of accretion of a low-mass satellite of 10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$ (mass ratio 1:7…
Aims: We study the effects of the cosmological assembly history on the chemical and dynamical properties of the discs of spiral galaxies as a function of radius. Methods: We make use of the simulated Milky-Way mass, fully-cosmological discs, from {\tt RaDES} (Ramses Disc Environment Study). We analyse their assembly history by examining the proximity of satellites to the galactic disc, instead of their merger trees, to better gauge which satellites impact the disc. We present stellar age and metallicity profiles, Age-Metallicity Relation (AMR), Age-Velocity dispersion Relation (AVR), and Stell…
We present a new suite of cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical ($\approx 20\, \mathrm{pc}$ spatial resolution) simulations of Milky-Way mass galaxies to study how a varying mass ratio for a Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) progenitor impacts the $z=0$ chemodynamics of halo stars. Using the genetic modification approach, we create five cosmological histories for a Milky-Way-mass dark matter halo ($M_{200} \approx 10^{12} \, M_\mathrm{\odot}$), incrementally increasing the stellar mass ratio of a $z\approx2$ merger from 1:25 to 1:2, while fixing the galaxy's final dynamical, stellar mass and large-sc…
Galaxy clustering measurements can be used to constrain many aspects of galaxy evolution, including galaxy host halo masses, satellite quenching efficiencies, and merger rates. We simulate JWST galaxy clustering measurements at z$\sim$4$-$10 by utilizing mock galaxy samples produced by an empirical model, the UniverseMachine. We also adopt the survey footprints and typical depths of the planned joint NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observation program planned for Cycle 1 to generate realistic JWST survey realizations and to model high-redshift galaxy selection completeness. We find that gal…
In this work we present two new $\sim10^9$ particle self-consistent simulations of the merger of a Sagittarius-like dwarf galaxy with a Milky Way-like disc galaxy. One model is a violent merger creating a thick disc, and a Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage like remnant. The other is a highly stable disc which we use to illustrate how the improved phase space resolution allows us to better examine the formation and evolution of structures that have been observed in small, local volumes in the Milky Way, such as the $z-v_z$ phase spiral and clustering in the $v_{\mathrm{R}}-v_ϕ$ plane when compared to prev…
We use a sample of $z=0$ galaxies visually classified as slow rotators (SRs) in the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations to explore the effect of galaxy mergers on their formation, characterise their intrinsic galaxy properties, and study the connection between quenching and kinematic transformation. SRs that have had major or minor mergers (mass ratios $\ge 0.3$ and $0.1-0.3$, respectively) tend to have a higher triaxiality parameter and ex-situ stellar fractions than those that had exclusively very minor mergers or formed in the absence of mergers ("no-merger" SRs). No-merger SRs are more compac…
Observations of the Galactic Center (GC) have accumulated a multitude of "forensic" evidence indicating that several million years ago the center of the Milky Way galaxy was teaming with starforming and accretion-powered activity -- this paints a rather different picture from the GC as we understand it today. We examine a possibility that this epoch of activity could have been triggered by the infall of a satellite galaxy into the Milky Way which began at the redshift of 10 and ended few million years ago with a merger of the Galactic supermassive black hole with an intermediate mass black hol…

[Abridged] Typical disc galaxies forming in a LambdaCDM cosmology encounter a violent environment, where they often experience mergers with massive satellites. The fact that disc galaxies are ubiquitous in the local Universe suggests that a quiescent history is not necessary for their formation. Modern cosmological simulations can now obtain relatively realistic populations of disc galaxies, but it still remains to be clarified how discs manage to survive massive mergers. Here we use a suite of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations set in a LambdaCDM cosmology to elucidate the fate of dis…

In the current concordance cosmology small halos are expected to be completely dark and can significantly perturb low-mass galaxies during minor merger interactions. These interactions may well contribute to the diversity of the dwarf galaxy population. Dwarf galaxies in the field are often observed to have peculiarities in their structure, morphology, and kinematics, as well as strong bursts of star formation without apparent cause. We aim to characterize the signatures of minor mergers of dwarf galaxies with dark satellites to aid their observational identification. We explore and quantify a…

The merging history of galaxies can be traced with studies of dynamically close pairs. These consist of a massive primary galaxy and a less massive secondary (or satellite) galaxy. The study of the stellar populations of secondary (lower mass) galaxies in close pairs provides a way to understand galaxy growth by mergers. Here we focus on systems involving at least one massive galaxy - with stellar mass above $10^{11}M_\odot$ in the highly complete GAMA survey. Our working sample comprises 2,692 satellite galaxy spectra (0.1<z<0.3). These spectra are combined into high S/N stacks, and binned ac…

We model the formation of the Galactic stellar halo via the accretion of satellite galaxies onto a time-dependent semi-cosmological galactic potential. Our goal is to characterize the substructure left by these accretion events in a close manner to what may be possible with the {\it Gaia} mission. We have created a synthetic {\it Gaia} Solar Neighbourhood catalogue by convolving the 6D phase-space coordinates of stellar particles from our disrupted satellites with the latest estimates of the {\it Gaia} measurement errors, and included realistic background contamination due to the Galactic disc…
We investigate the effects of minor mergers between an S0 galaxy and a gas-rich satellite galaxy, by means of N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. The satellite galaxy is initially on a nearly parabolic orbit and undergoes several periapsis passages before being completely stripped. In most simulations, a portion of the stripped gas forms a warm dense gas ring in the S0 galaxy, with a radius of ~6-13 kpc and a mass of ~10^7 solar masses (Msun). The ring is generally short-lived (<~3 Gyr) if it forms from prograde encounters, while it can live for more than 6 Gyr if it is b…

About half of the S0 galaxies in the nearby Universe show signatures of recent or ongoing star formation. Whether these S0 galaxies were rejuvenated by the accretion of fresh gas is still controversial. We study minor mergers of a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with an S0 galaxy, by means of N-body smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations. We find that minor mergers trigger episodes of star formation in the S0 galaxy, lasting for ~10 Gyr. One of the most important fingerprints of the merger is the formation of a gas ring in the S0 galaxy. The ring is reminiscent of the orbit of the satellite galaxy,…
The Milky Way's stellar disk can tilt in response to torques that result from infalling satellite galaxies and their associated tidal debris. In this work, we explore the dynamics of disk tilting by running N-body simulations of mergers in an isolated, isotropic Milky Way-like host galaxy, varying over satellite virial mass, initial position, and orbit. We develop and validate a first-principles understanding of the dynamics that govern how the host galaxy's stellar disk responds to the satellite's dark matter debris. We find that the degree of disk tilting can be large for cosmologically-moti…
Although the proximity of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) offers an opportunity to understand how mergers affect galaxies, uncertainty remains about M31's most important mergers. Previous studies focused individually on the giant stellar stream or the impact of M32 on M31's disk, thereby suggesting many substantial satellite interactions. Yet models of M31's disk heating and the similarity between the stellar populations of different tidal substructures in M31's outskirts both suggested a single large merger. M31's stellar halo (its outer low-surface-brightness regions) is built up from the tidal d…
Many of the Milky Way's globular clusters are likely accreted from satellite galaxies that have long since merged with the Milky Way. When these globular clusters are susceptible to tidal disruption, this process likely starts already inside the parent satellite leading to an early stellar stream within the satellite. When the parent satellite merges with the Milky Way, the globular cluster and its pre-merger stellar stream are accreted in a somewhat chaotic process. Here, we investigate the properties of the accreted stream after the merger as we would see it today using a suite of simulation…
Recent progress of nucleosynthesis work as well as the discovery of a kilonova associated with the gravitational-wave source GW170817 indicates that neutron star mergers (NSM) can be a site of the r-process. Several studies of galactic chemical evolution, however, have pointed out inconsistencies between this idea and the observed stellar abundance signatures in the Milky Way: (a) the presence of Eu at low (halo) metallicity and (b) the descending trend of Eu/Fe at high (disc) metallicity. In this study, we explore the galactic chemical evolution of the Milky Way's halo, disc and satellite dwa…
Multi-band images of the very isolated spiral galaxy NGC 5523 show a number of unusual features consistent with NGC 5523 having experienced a significant merger: (1) Near-infrared (NIR) images from the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the WIYN 3.5-m telescope reveal a nucleated bulge-like structure embedded in a spiral disk. (2) The bulge is offset by ~1.8 kpc from a brightness minimum at the center of the optically bright inner disk. (3) A tidal stream, possibly associated with an ongoing satellite interaction, extends from the nucleated bulge along the disk. We interpret these properties as…
Nuclear disks and rings are frequent galaxy substructures, for a wide range of morphological types (from S0 to Sc). We have investigated the possible minor-merger origin of inner disks and rings in spiral galaxies through collisionless N-body simulations. The models confirm that minor mergers can drive the formation of thin, kinematically-cold structures in the center of galaxies out of satellite material, without requiring the previous formation of a bar. Satellite core particles tend to be deposited in circular orbits in the central potential, due to the strong circularization experienced by…
Using the Horizon-AGN simulation data, we study the relative role of mergers and environmental effects in shaping the spin of early-type galaxies (ETGs) after $z \simeq 1$. We follow the spin evolution of 10,037 color-selected ETGs more massive than 10$^{10} \rm \, M_{\odot}$ that are divided into four groups: cluster centrals (3%), cluster satellites (33%), group centrals (5%), and field ETGs (59%). We find a strong mass dependence of the slow rotator fraction, $f_{\rm SR}$, and the mean spin of massive ETGs. Although we do not find a clear environmental dependence of $f_{\rm SR}$, a weak tre…
In this talk, I report results from galaxy merger simulations, which suggest the existence of a ring of star formation produced by close galaxy encounters. This is a generic feature of all galaxy interactions, provided that the disc spins are sufficiently aligned. This signature can be used to identify close galaxy pairs that have actually suffered a close interaction.
It has been proposed that mergers induce starbursts and lead to important morphological changes in galaxies. Most studies so far have focused on large galaxies, but dwarfs might also experience such events, since the halo mass function is scale-free in the concordance cosmological model. Notably, because of their low mass, most of their interactions will be with dark satellites. In this paper we follow the evolution of gas-rich disky dwarf galaxies as they experience a minor merger with a dark satellite. We aim to characterize the effects of such an interaction on the dwarf's star formation, m…
We use the Zurich ENvironmental Study (ZENS) database to investigate the environmental dependence of the merger fraction $Γ$ and merging galaxy properties in a sample of ~1300 group galaxies with $M>10^{9.2}M_\odot$ and 0.05<z<0.0585. In all galaxy mass bins investigated in our study, we find that $Γ$ decreases by a factor of ~2-3 in groups with halo masses $M_{HALO}>10^{13.5} M_\odot$ relative to less massive systems, indicating a suppression of merger activity in large potential wells. In the fiducial case of relaxed groups only, we measure a variation $ΔΓ/Δ\log (M_{HALO}) \sim - 0.07$ dex$^…
Satellites constitute an important fraction of the overall galaxy population and are believed to form in dark matter subhalos. Here we use the cosmological hydrodynamic simulation TNG100 to investigate how the formation histories of subhalos affect the properties and evolution of their host galaxies. We use a scaled formation time ($a_{\rm nf}$) to characterize the mass assembly histories of the subhalos before they are accreted by massive host halos. We find that satellite galaxies in young subhalos (low $a_{\rm nf}$) are less massive and more gas rich, and have stronger star formation and a …
The global 21 cm HI emission-line profile of a galaxy encodes valuable information on the spatial distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic gas. Galaxy interactions significantly influence the HI disk and imprint observable features on the integrated HI line profile. In this work, we study the neutral atomic gas properties of galaxy mergers selected from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey. The HI spectra come from new observations with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope and from a collection of archival data. We quantify the HI profile of the mergers with a ne…
Central galaxies (CGs) in galaxy groups and clusters are believed to form and assemble a good portion of their stellar mass at early times, but they also accrete significant mass at late times via galactic cannibalism, that is merging with companion group or cluster galaxies that experience dynamical friction against the common host dark-matter halo. The effect of these mergers on the structure and kinematics of the CG depends not only on the properties of the accreted satellites, but also on the orbital parameters of the encounters. Here we present the results of numerical simulations aimed a…
According to the standard cosmological scenario, the large galaxies that we observe today have reached their current mass via mergers with smaller galaxy satellites (Moore et al.1999). This hierarchical process is expected to take place on smaller scales for the satellites themselves, that should build-up from the accretion of smaller building blocks (D'Onghia & Lake 2008). The best chance we have to test this prediction is by looking at the most massive satellite of the Milky Way (MW): the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Smaller galaxies have been revealed to orbit around the LMC (Erkal & Belok…
Different methodologies lead to order-of-magnitude variations in predicted galaxy merger rates. We examine and quantify the dominant uncertainties. Different halo merger rates and subhalo 'destruction' rates agree to within a factor ~2 given proper care in definitions. If however (sub)halo masses are not appropriately defined or are under-resolved, the major merger rate can be dramatically suppressed. The dominant differences in galaxy merger rates owe to baryonic physics. Hydrodynamic simulations without feedback and older models that do not agree with the observed galaxy mass function propag…
We present a statistical study of the luminosity functions of galaxies surrounding luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at average redshifts <z>=0.34 and <z>=0.65. The luminosity functions are derived by extracting source photometry around more than 40,000 LRGs and subtracting foreground and background contamination using randomly selected control fields. We show that at both studied redshifts the average luminosity functions of the LRGs and their satellite galaxies are poorly fitted by a Schechter function due to a luminosity gap between the centrals and their most luminous satellites. We utilize a t…
The ages and metallicities of globular clusters (GCs) are known to be powerful tracers of the properties of their progenitor galaxies, enabling their use in determining the merger histories of galaxies. However, while useful in separating GCs into individual accretion events, the orbits of GC groups themselves have received less attention as probes of their progenitor galaxy properties. In this work, we use simulations of galaxies and their GC systems from the E-MOSAICS project to explore how the present-day orbital properties of GCs are related to the properties of their progenitor galaxies. …
