We investigate the environmental dependence of the stellar populations of galaxies in SDSS DR7. Echoing earlier works, we find that satellites are both more metal-rich (<0.1 dex) and older (<2 Gyr) than centrals of the same stellar mass. However, after separating star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies, we find that the true environmental dependence of both stellar metallicity (<0.03 dex) and age (<0.5 Gyr) is in fact much weaker. We show that the strong environmental effects found when galaxies are not differentiated result from a combination of selection effects brought about by the environmental dependence of the quenched fraction of galaxies, and thus we strongly advocate for the separation of star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies when the environmental dependence of galaxy properties are investigated. We also study further environmental trends separately for both central and satellite galaxies. We find that star-forming galaxies show no environmental effects, neither for centrals nor for satellites. In contrast, the stellar metallicities of passive and green valley satellites increase weakly (< 0.05 dex and < 0.08 dex, respectively) with increasing halo mass, increasing local overdensity and decreasing projected distance from their central; this effect is interpreted in terms of moderate environmental starvation (`strangulation') contributing to the quenching of satellite galaxies. Finally, we find a unique feature in the stellar mass--stellar metallicity relation for passive centrals, where galaxies in more massive haloes have larger stellar mass (~0.1 dex) at constant stellar metallicity; this effect is interpreted in terms of dry merging of passive central galaxies and/or progenitor bias.
It remains an open question as to how long ago the morphology that we see in a present-day galaxy was typically imprinted. Studies of galaxy populations at different redshifts reveal that the balance of morphologies has changed over time, but such snapshots cannot uncover the typical timescales over which individual galaxies undergo morphological transformation, nor which are the progenitors of today's galaxies of different types. However, these studies also show a strong link between morphology and star-formation rate over a large range in redshift, which offers an alternative probe of morpho…
We investigate how cosmic web environment impacts the average properties of central galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We analyse how the average specific star-formation rate, stellar age, metallicity and element abundance ratio [$α$/Fe] of SDSS central galaxies depend on distance from the cosmic web nodes, walls and filaments identified by DisPerSE. In our approach we control for galaxy stellar mass and local density differentiated between field and group environment. Our results confirm the known trend whereby galaxies exhibit lower specific star-formation rates with decreasing…
Milky Way-mass galaxies in the FIRE-2 simulations demonstrate two main modes of star formation. At high redshifts star formation occurs in a series of short and intense bursts, while at low redshifts star formation proceeds at a steady rate with a transition from one mode to another at times ranging from 3 to 7 Gyr ago for different galaxies. We analyse how the mode of star formation affects iron and alpha-element abundance. We find that the early bursty regime imprints a measurable pattern in stellar elemental abundances in the form of a "sideways chevron" shape on the [Fe/H] - [O/Fe] plane a…
Galactic stellar discs, such as that of the Milky Way, have usually a complex structure consisting of a thin and a thick component. The study of galactic disc substructures and their differences can shed light on the galaxy assembling processes and their evolution. However, due to observational difficulties there is a lack of information about the stellar populations of the thick disc components in external galaxies. Here we investigate three edge-on early-type disc galaxies in the Fornax cluster IC335, NGC1380A, NGC1381 by using publicly available photometrical data and our new deep long-slit…

We discuss a model for the Milky Way obtained by fitting the observed terminal velocities with the radial acceleration relation. The resulting stellar surface density profile departs from a smooth exponential disk, having bumps and wiggles that correspond to massive spiral arms. These features are used to estimate the term for the logarithmic density gradient in the Jeans equation, which turn out to have exactly the right location and amplitude to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between the stellar rotation curve and that of the interstellar gas. This model also predicts a gradually declini…
We investigate the infrared (IR) emission of high-redshift ($z\sim 6$), highly star-forming (${ {\rm SFR} > 100}$ $M_{\rm \odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$) galaxies, with/without Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), using a suite of cosmological simulations featuring dust radiative transfer. Synthetic Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are used to quantify the relative contribution of stars/AGN to dust heating. In dusty (${M_{\rm d}\gtrsim 3\times 10^7 M_{\rm \odot}}$) galaxies, $\gtrsim 50-90 \%$ of the UV radiation is obscured by dust inhomogeneities on scales ${\gtrsim 100}$ pc. In runs with AGN, a clumpy,…

In the era of large-scale spectroscopic surveys in the Local Group (LG), we can explore using chemical abundances of halo stars to study the star formation and chemical enrichment histories of the dwarf galaxy progenitors of the Milky Way (MW) and M31 stellar halos. In this paper, we investigate using the Chemical Abundance Ratio Distributions (CARDs) of seven stellar halos from the Latte suite of FIRE-2 simulations. We attempt to infer galaxies' assembly histories by modelling the CARDs of the stellar halos of the Latte galaxies as a linear combination of template CARDs from disrupted dwarfs,…
Stellar population synthesis (SPS) models have long struggled to reproduce observed optical through near-IR (NIR) spectral energy distributions (SED) of massive quiescent galaxies. We revisit this issue using a novel approach that combines the diagnostic power of full-spectrum fitting with recently updated stellar spectral libraries. First, we perform full-spectrum fitting of continuum-normalized stacked SDSS spectra in bins of velocity dispersion to infer their stellar population properties, such as the elemental abundances and age. Next, we use the resulting best-fit parameters to compute $u…

In recent years, $γ$-ray emission has been detected from star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the local universe, including M82, NGC 253, Arp 220 and M33. The bulk of this emission is thought to be of hadronic origin, arising from the interactions of cosmic rays (CRs) with the interstellar medium of their host galaxy. Distant SFGs are presumably also bright in $γ$-rays. Although they would not be resolvable as point sources, distant unresolved SFG populations contribute $γ$-rays to the extra-galactic $γ$-ray background (EGB). Despite the wealth of high-quality all-sky EGB data collected over more t…
Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) harbour an abundant reservoir of cosmic rays (CRs). At GeV energies, these CRs undergo interactions with their environment to produce $γ$-rays, and the unresolved $γ$-ray emission from populations of SFGs forms a component of the isotropic extragalactic $γ$-ray background (EGB). In this work, we investigate the contribution to the 0.01 - 50 GeV EGB from SFG populations located up to redshift $z=3$. We find this is dominated by starbursts, while the contribution from main sequence SFGs is marginal at all energies. We also demonstrate that most of the $γ$-ray contrib…
Within Rotation Curves (RC) is encoded the kinematical state of the stellar disc as well as information about the dynamical mechanisms driving the secular evolution of galaxies. To explain the characteristic features of RCs that arise by the influence of spiral patterns and bar, we study the kinematics of the stellar disc in a set of spiral galaxy models specifically tailored for this purpose. We find that, for our models, the induced non-circular motions are more prominent for spirals with larger pitch angle, the ones typical in late type galaxies. Moreover, inside corotation, stars rotate sl…

We present a new suite of cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical ($\approx 20\, \mathrm{pc}$ spatial resolution) simulations of Milky-Way mass galaxies to study how a varying mass ratio for a Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) progenitor impacts the $z=0$ chemodynamics of halo stars. Using the genetic modification approach, we create five cosmological histories for a Milky-Way-mass dark matter halo ($M_{200} \approx 10^{12} \, M_\mathrm{\odot}$), incrementally increasing the stellar mass ratio of a $z\approx2$ merger from 1:25 to 1:2, while fixing the galaxy's final dynamical, stellar mass and large-sc…
We perform a comprehensive study of the stellar population properties of quiescent galaxies as a function of size and stellar mass to constrain the physical mechanism governing the stellar mass assembly and the likely evolutive scenarios that explain their growth in size. After selecting all the quiescent galaxies from the ALHAMBRA survey by the dust-corrected stellar mass$-$colour diagram, we built a shared sample of $\sim850$ quiescent galaxies with reliable sizes from the HST. The stellar population properties were retrieved using the SED-fitting code MUFFIT with various sets of composite s…
Our aim is to determine the distribution of stellar population parameters (extinction, age, metallicity, and star formation rate) of quiescent galaxies within the rest-frame stellar mass$-$colour and $UVJ$ colour$-$colour diagrams corrected for extinction up to $z\sim1$. These novel diagrams reduce the contamination in samples of quiescent galaxies owing to dust-reddened galaxies, and they provide useful constraints on stellar population parameters. We set constraints on the stellar population parameters of quiescent galaxies combining the ALHAMBRA multi-filter photo-spectra with our SED-fitti…
In a purely cold dark matter universe, the initial matter power spectrum and its subsequent gravitational growth contain no special mass- or time-scales, and so neither do the emergent population statistics of internal dark matter (DM) halo properties. Using 1.5 million halos from three IllustrisTNG realizations of a LambdaCDM universe, we show that galaxy formation physics drives non-monotonic features ("wiggles") into DM property statistics across six decades in halo mass, from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters. We characterize these features by extracting the halo mass-dependent statistics …
We present the primary results from the Dragonfly Edge-on Galaxies Survey (DEGS), an exploration of the stellar halos of twelve nearby ($d < 25$ Mpc) edge-on disc galaxies with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. The edge-on orientation of these galaxies allows their stellar halos to be explored with minimal obscuration by or confusion with the much brighter disc light. Galaxies in the sample span a range of stellar masses from $10^{9.68} - 10^{10.88} M_\odot$. We confirm that the wide range of stellar halo mass fractions previously seen for Milky Way-mass galaxies is also found among less massive …
We present the integral-field kinematics and stellar population properties of 64 galaxies (61 are Early-Type galaxies, ETGs) with Counter-Rotating stellar Disks (CRD) selected from about 4000 galaxies in the MaNGA survey, based on evidence of counter-rotation or two velocity dispersion peaks in the kinematic maps. For 17 CRDs, the counter-rotating components can also be separated spectroscopically. The frequency of CRDs in MaNGA is <5% for ellipticals, <3% for lenticulars and <1% for spirals (at 95% confidence level), consistent with previous estimates. We produced age and metallicity maps, an…
Using the TNG100 (100 Mpc)^3 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we demonstrate a strong connection between the onset of star formation quenching and the stellar size of galaxies. We do so by tracking the evolutionary history of extended and normal-size galaxies selected at z=2 with log(M_star) = 10.2 - 11 and stellar-half-mass-radii above and within 1-sigma of the stellar size--stellar mass relation, respectively. We match the stellar mass and star formation rate distributions of the two populations. By z=1, only 36% of the extended massive galaxies have quenched, in contrast to a quenche…
