We study well-posedness for the stochastic transport equation with transport noise, as introduced by Flandoli, Gubinelli and Priola. We consider periodic solutions in $ρ\in L^{\infty}_{t} L_{x}^{p}$ for divergence-free drifts $u \in L^{\infty}_{t} W_{x}^{θ, \tilde{p}}$ for a large class of parameters. We prove local-in-time pathwise nonuniqueness and compare them to uniqueness results by Beck, Flandoli, Gubinelli and Maurelli, addressing a conjecture made by these authors, in the case of bounded-in-time drifts for a large range of spatial parameters. To this end, we use convex integration techniques to construct velocity fields $u$ for which several solutions $ρ$ exist in the classes mentioned above. The main novelty lies in the ability to construct deterministic drift coefficients, which makes it necessary to consider a convex integration scheme \textit{with a constraint}, which poses a series of technical difficulties.
We prove that diffusion equations with a space-time stationary and ergodic, divergence-free drift homogenize in law to a deterministic stochastic partial differential equation with Stratonovich transport noise. In the absence of spatial ergodicity, the drift is only partially absorbed into the skew-symmetric part of the flux through the use of an appropriately defined stream matrix. This leaves a time-dependent, spatially-homogenous transport which, for mildly decorrelating fields, converges to a Brownian noise with deterministic covariance in the homogenization limit. The results apply to uni…
We consider a linear stochastic differential equation with stochastic drift and multiplicative noise. We study the problem of approximating its solution with the process that solves the equation where the possibly stochastic drift is replaced by a deterministic function. To do this, we use a combination of deterministic Pontryagin's maximum principle approach and direct methods of calculus of variations. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a function $u \in L^1(0,T)$ to be a minimizer of a certain cost functional. To overcome the problem of the existence of such minimizer, we also …
Let $B^{H}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$, $f:[0,1]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function, and $E\subset[0,1]$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ are given Borel sets. The focus of this paper is on hitting probabilities of the fractional Brownian motion $B^{H}$ with the deterministic drift $f$. It aims to highlight the role of the regularity properties of the drift $f$ as well as that of the dimension of $E$ in determining the upper and lower bounds of $\mathbb{P}\{(B^H+f)(E)\cap F\neq \emptyset \}$ for $F$ a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and also fo…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions, as well as continuous dependence on the initial datum, for a class of fully nonlinear second-order stochastic PDEs with drift in divergence form. Due to rather general assumptions on the growth of the nonlinearity in the drift, which, in particular, is allowed to grow faster than polynomially, existing techniques are not applicable. A well-posedness result is obtained through a combination of a priori estimates on regularized equations, interpreted both as stochastic equations as well as deterministic equations with random coefficients, an…
We consider Perron-Frobenius and Koopman operators associated to time-inhomogeneous ordinary stochastic differential equations, and establish their Fréchet differentiability with respect to the drift. This result relies on a similar differentiability result for pathwise expectations of path functionals of the solution of the stochastic differential equation, which we establish using Girsanov's formula. We demonstrate the significance of our result in the context of dynamical systems and operator theory, by proving continuously differentiable drift dependence of the simple eigen- and singular v…
Usually the problem of drift estimation for a diffusion process is considered under the hypothesis of ergodicity. It is less often considered under the hypothesis of null-recurrence, simply because there are fewer limit theorems and existing ones do not apply to the whole null-recurrent class. The aim of this paper is to provide some limit theorems for additive functionals and martingales of a general (ergodic or null) recurrent diffusion which would allow us to have a somewhat unified approach to the problem of non-parametric kernel drift estimation in the one-dimensional recurrent case. As a…
We study the zero-noise limit for autonomous, one-dimensional ordinary differential equations with discontinuous right-hand sides. Although the deterministic equation might have infinitely many solutions, we show, under rather general conditions, that the sequence of stochastically perturbed solutions converges to a unique distribution on classical solutions of the deterministic equation. We provide several tools for computing this limit distribution.
Let $B^{H}$ be a fractional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ of Hurst index $H\in\left(0,1\right)$, $f:\left[0,1\right]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function and $A\subset\left[0,1\right]$ a Borel set. We provide sufficient conditions for the image $(B^{H}+f)(A)$ to have a positive Lebesgue measure or to have a non-empty interior. This is done through the study of the properties of the density of the occupation measure of $(B^{H}+f)$. Precisely, we prove that if the parabolic Hausdorff dimension of the graph of $f$ is greater than $Hd$, then the density is a square integrable funct…
We study evolution equations of drift-diffusion type when various parameters are random. Motivated by applications in pedestrian dynamics, we focus on the case when the total mass is, due to boundary or reaction terms, not conserved. After providing existence and stability for the deterministic problem, we consider uncertainty in the data. Instead of a sensitivity analysis we propose to measure functionals of the solution, so-called quantities of interest (QoI), by involving scalarizing statistics. For these summarizing statistics we provide probabilistic continuity results.
We consider a stochastic linear transport equation with a globally Hölder continuous and bounded vector field. Opposite to what happens in the deterministic case where shocks may appear, we show that the unique solution starting with a C^{1}-initial condition remains of class $C^{1}$ in space. We also improve some results of Flandoli-Gubinelli-Priola (2009) about well-posedness. Moreover, we prove a stability property for the solution with respect to the initial datum.
A linear stochastic transport equation with non-regular coefficients is considered. Under the same assumption of the deterministic theory, all weak $L^\infty$-solutions are renormalized. But then, if the noise is nondegenerate, uniqueness of weak $L^\infty$-solutions does not require essential new assumptions, opposite to the deterministic case where for instance the divergence of the drift is asked to be bounded. The proof gives a new explanation why bilinear multiplicative noise may have a regularizing effect.
In this paper linear stochastic transport and continuity equations with drift in critical $L^{p}$ spaces are considered. In this situation noise prevents shocks for the transport equation and singularities in the density for the continuity equation, starting from smooth initial conditions. Specifically, we first prove a result of Sobolev regularity of solutions, which is false for the corresponding deterministic equation. The technique needed to reach the critical case is new and based on parabolic equations satisfied by moments of first derivatives of the solution, opposite to previous works …
We consider a form of state-dependent drift condition for a general Markov chain, whereby the chain subsampled at some deterministic time satisfies a geometric Foster-Lyapunov condition. We present sufficient criteria for such a drift condition to exist, and use these to partially answer a question posed by Connor & Kendall (2007) concerning the existence of so-called 'tame' Markov chains. Furthermore, we show that our 'subsampled drift condition' implies the existence of finite moments for the return time to a small set.
In this paper we consider one-dimensional diffusions with constant coefficients in a finite interval with jump boundary and a certain deterministic jump distribution. We use coupling methods in order to identify the spectral gap in the case of a large drift and prove that that there is a threshold drift above which the bottom of the spectrum no longer depends on the drift. As a Corollary to our result we are able to answer two questions concerning elliptic eigenvalue problems with non-local boundary conditions formulated previously by Iddo Ben-Ari and Ross Pinsky.
In this paper we prove strong well-posedness for a system of stochastic differential equations driven by a degenerate diffusion satisfying a weak-type Hörmander condition, assuming Hölder regularity assumptions on the drift coefficient. This framework encompasses, as particular cases, stochastic Langevin systems of kinetic SDEs. The drift coefficient of the velocity component is allowed to be $α$-Hölder continuous without any restriction on the index $α$, which can be any positive number in $]0,1[$. As the deterministic counterparts of these differential systems are not well-posed, this result…
We formulate simple criteria for positive Harris recurrence of strongly degenerate stochastic differential equations with smooth coefficients when the drift depends on time and space and is periodic in the time argument. There is no time dependence in the diffusion coefficient. Our criteria rely on control systems and the support theorem, existence of an attainable inner point of full weak Hoermander dimension and of some Lyapunov function. Positive Harris recurrence enables us to prove limit theorems for such diffusions. As an application, we consider a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model for a s…
A stochastic linear transport equation with multiplicative noise is considered and the question of no-blow-up is investigated. The drift is assumed only integrable to a certain power. Opposite to the deterministic case where smooth initial conditions may develop discontinuities, we prove that a certain Sobolev degree of regularity is maintained, which implies Hölder continuity of solutions. The proof is based on a careful analysis of the associated stochastic flow of characteristics.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the mild solution for a nonlinear stochastic heat equation defined on an unbounded spatial domain. The nonlinearity is not assumed to be globally, or even locally, Lipschitz continuous. Instead the nonlinearity is assumed to satisfy a one-sided Lipschitz condition. First, a strengthened version of the Kolmogorov continuity theorem is introduced to prove that the stochastic convolutions of the fundamental solution of the heat equation and a spatially homogeneous noise grow no faster than polynomially. Second, a deterministic mapping that maps the stochas…
In this paper we consider a stochastic process that may experience random reset events which bring suddenly the system to the starting value and analyze the relevant statistical magnitudes. We focus our attention on monotonous continuous-time random walks with a constant drift: the process increases between the reset events, either by the effect of the random jumps, or by the action of the deterministic drift. As a result of all these combined factors interesting properties emerge, like the existence|for any drift strength|of a stationary transition probability density function, or the faculty…
We are concerned with a special form of the (stochastic) Allen-Cahn equation, which can be seen as a model of hybrid zones in population genetics. Individuals in the population can be of one of three types; $aa$ are fitter than $AA$, and both are fitter than the $aA$ heterozygotes. The hybrid zone is the region separating a subpopulation consisting entirely of $aa$ individuals from one consisting of $AA$ individuals. We investigate the interplay between the motion of the hybrid zone and the shape of the habitat, both with and without genetic drift (corresponding to stochastic and deterministic…
Consider a fast-slow system of ordinary differential equations of the form $\dot x=a(x,y)+\varepsilon^{-1}b(x,y)$, $\dot y=\varepsilon^{-2}g(y)$, where it is assumed that $b$ averages to zero under the fast flow generated by $g$. We give conditions under which solutions $x$ to the slow equations converge weakly to an Itô diffusion $X$ as $\varepsilon\to0$. The drift and diffusion coefficients of the limiting stochastic differential equation satisfied by $X$ are given explicitly. Our theory applies when the fast flow is Anosov or Axiom A, as well as to a large class of nonuniformly hyperbolic f…
We consider a diffusion $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ whose drift contains some deterministic periodic signal. Its shape being fixed and known, up to scaling in time, the periodicity of the signal is the unknown parameter $\vartheta$ of interest. We consider sequences of local models at $\vartheta$, corresponding to continuous observation of the process $ξ$ on the time interval $[0,n]$ as $n\to\infty$, with suitable choice of local scale at $\vartheta$. Our tools --under an ergodicity condition-- are path segments of $ξ$ corresponding to the period $\vartheta$, and limit theorems for certain functionals of…
Given a submersion $ϕ: M \to N$, where $M$ is Riemannian, we construct a stochastic process $X$ on $M$ such that the image $Y:=ϕ(X)$ is a (reversed, scaled) mean curvature flow of the fibers of the submersion. The model example is the mapping $π: GL(n) \to GL(n)/O(n)$, whose image is equivalent to the space of $n$-by-$n$ positive definite matrices, $\pdef$, and the said MCF has deterministic image. We are able to compute explicitly the mean curvature (and hence the drift term) of the fibers w.r.t. this map, (i) under diagonalization and (ii) in matrix entries, writing mean curvature as the gra…
We consider deterministic homogenization for discrete-time fast-slow systems of the form $$ X_{k+1} = X_k + n^{-1}a_n(X_k,Y_k) + n^{-1/2}b_n(X_k,Y_k)\;, \quad Y_{k+1} = T_nY_k\;$$ and give conditions under which the dynamics of the slow equations converge weakly to an Itô diffusion $X$ as $n\to\infty$. The drift and diffusion coefficients of the limiting stochastic differential equation satisfied by $X$ are given explicitly. This extends the results of [Kelly-Melbourne, J. Funct. Anal. 272 (2017) 4063--4102] from the continuous-time case to the discrete-time case. Moreover, our methods (càdlàg…
This work is concerned with the stability properties of linear stochastic differential equations with random (drift and diffusion) coefficient matrices, and the stability of a corresponding random transition matrix (or exponential semigroup). We consider a class of random matrix drift coefficients that involves random perturbations of an exponentially stable flow of deterministic (time-varying) drift matrices. In contrast with more conventional studies, our analysis is not based on the existence of Lyapunov functions, and it does not rely on any ergodic properties. These approaches are often d…
We consider the $[0,1]$-valued solution $(u_{t,x}:t\geq 0, x\in \mathbb R)$ to the one dimensional stochastic reaction diffusion equation with Wright-Fisher noise \[\partial_t u= \partial_x^2 u + f(u) + ε\sqrt{u(1-u)} \dot W.\] Here, $W$ is a space-time white noise, $ε> 0$ is the noise strength, and $f$ is a continuous function on $[0,1]$ satisfying $\sup_{z\in [0,1]}|f(z)|/ \sqrt{z(1-z)} < \infty.$ We assume the initial data satisfies $1 - u_{0,-x} = u_{0,x} = 0$ for $x$ large enough. Recently, it was proved in (Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{384} (2021), no. 2) that the front of $u_t$ propagates …
We consider nonparametric invariant density and drift estimation for a class of multidimensional degenerate resp. hypoelliptic diffusion processes, so-called stochastic damping Hamiltonian systems or kinetic diffusions, under anisotropic smoothness assumptions on the unknown functions. The analysis is based on continuous observations of the process, and the estimators' performance is measured in terms of the sup-norm loss. Regarding invariant density estimation, we obtain highly nonclassical results for the rate of convergence, which reflect the inhomogeneous variance structure of the process.…
Populations evolving under the joint influence of recombination and resampling (traditionally known as genetic drift) are investigated. First, we summarise and adapt a deterministic approach, as valid for infinite populations, which assumes continuous time and single crossover events. The corresponding nonlinear system of differential equations permits a closed solution, both in terms of the type frequencies and via linkage disequilibria of all orders. To include stochastic effects, we then consider the corresponding finite-population model, the Moran model with single crossovers, and examine …
