Topological insulator lie at the forefront of condensed matter physics. However strong disorder can destroy the topological states and make all states become localized. In this paper, we investigate the competition between topology and localization in the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with controllable off-diagonal quasi-periodic modulations on superconducting circuits. By utilizing external ac magnetic fluxes, each transmon can be driven and all coupling strengths can be tuned independently. Based on this model we construct phase diagrams that illustrate the extended topologically nontrivial, critical localization, and coexisting topological and critical localization phases. The dynamics of the qubits' excitations are also discussed in this paper, revealing distinct quantum state transfers resulting from the interplay between topology and localization. Furthermore, we propose a method for detecting different quantum phases using current experimental setups.
Non-Hermiticity from non-reciprocal hoppings has been shown recently to demonstrate the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) under open boundary conditions (OBCs). Here we study the interplay of this effect and the Anderson localization in a \textit{non-reciprocal} quasiperiodic lattice, dubbed non-reciprocal Aubry-André model, and a \textit{rescaled} transition point is exactly proved. The non-reciprocity can induce not only the NHSE, but also the asymmetry in localized states with two Lyapunov exponents for both sides. Meanwhile, this transition is also topological, characterized by a winding nu…
We report transport measurements on superconducting wire networks which provide the first experimental evidence of a new localization phenomenon induced by magnetic field on a 2D periodic structure. In the case of a superconducting wave function this phenomenon manifests itself as a depression of the network critical current and of the superconducting transition temperature at a half magnetic flux quantum per tile. In addition, the strong broadening of the resistive transition observed at this field is consistent with enhanced phase fluctuations due to this localization mechanism.
The effects of structural (Rashba) and bulk (Dresselhaus) spin-orbit interaction terms on the low-field magnetoresistance are investigated in high-quality two dimensional systems. The weak localization theory accounting for both of these terms valid in the whole range of magnetic fields is proposed. The suppresion of antilocalization correction as Rashba and Dresselhaus terms strengths approach each other is demonstrated. The effect of cubic in the wavevector spin-splitting term is analyzed.
Thin films of alkali metals when sandwiched at both surfaces by thin metal films loose their conductance. The superconducting proximity effect is used to investigate the change in the alkali film. On the length scale of the film thickness the electronic properties of the alkali film do not change noticeably although its conductance is dramatically reduced, corresponding to localized electrons.
The superconducting properties of a two-dimensional superconducting wire network with a new geometry have been measured as a function of the external magnetic field. The extreme localization effect recently predicted for this periodic lattice is revealed as a suppression of the critical current when the applied magnetic field corresponds to half a flux quantum per unit cell. For this particular magnetic field, the observed vortex state configuration is highly disordered.
Magnetic molecules adsorbed on a superconductor give rise to a local competition of Cooper pair and Kondo singlet formation inducing subgap bound states. For Manganese-phthalocyanine molecules on a Pb(111) substrate, scanning tunneling spectroscopy resolves pairs of subgap bound states and two Kondo screening channels. We show in a combined approach of scaling and numerical renormalization group calculations that the intriguing relation between Kondo screening and superconducting pairing is solely determined by the hybridization strength with the substrate. We demonstrate that an effective one…
We investigate integer and fractional quantum Hall states in quantum point contacts (QPCs) of different geometries, defined in AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures employing different doping and screening techniques. We find that, even in the highest mobility samples, interference and localization strongly influence the transport properties. We propose microscopic models for these effects, based on single- and many-electron physics. For integer quantum Hall states, transport is modulated due to the self-consistent formation of compressible regions of enhanced or reduced density in the incompressible r…
We analyze the change in the resistance of a junction between a diffusive ferromagnetic (F) wire and normal metal electrode, due to the onset of superconductivity (S) in the latter and a double Andreev scattering process leading to a complete internal reflection of a large fraction of the spin-polarized electrons back into the ferromagnet. The superconducting transition results in an additional contact resistance arising from the necessity to match spin-polarized current in F-wire to spin-less current in S-reservoir, which is comparable to the resistance of a piece of a F-wire with the length …
Understanding complex quantum matter presents a central challenge in condensed matter physics. The difficulty lies in the exponential scaling of the Hilbert space with the system size, making solutions intractable for both analytical and conventional numerical methods. As originally envisioned by Richard Feynman, this class of problems can be tackled using controllable quantum simulators. Despite many efforts, building an quantum emulator capable of solving generic quantum problems remains an outstanding challenge, as this involves controlling a large number of quantum elements. Here, employin…
We study inhomogeneous Cooper pairs distribution and localization effects in tree-like networks of superconducting islands coupled via Josephson weak links. Using a generalized Feynman's approach, reminiscent of the Bose-Hubbard model, we demonstrate that the Cooper pairs fraction which localizes on a specific network's island is limited by the network topology and, if present, by the repulsive interaction. These findings contribute to clarify the interplay between confinement effects induced by the network's topology and interaction and shed some light on recent experiments dealing with netwo…
We consider a one-dimensional system combining local magnetic moments and a delocalized metallic band on top of a superconducting substrate. This system can describe a chain of magnetic impurities with both localized polarized orbitals and delocalized s-like orbitals or a conducting wire with embedded magnetic impurities. We study the interplay between the one-dimensional Shiba band physics arising from the interplay between magnetic moments and the substrate and the delocalized wire-like conduction band on top of the superconductor. We derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian in terms of tw…
The magnetoresistance of a low carrier density, disordered GaAs based two-dimensional (2D) electron gas has been measured in parallel magnetic fields up to 32 T. The feature in the resistance associated with the complete spin polarization of the carriers shifts down by more than 20 T as the electron density is reduced, consistent with recent theories taking into account the enhancement of the electron-electron interactions at low densities. Nevertheless, the magnetic field for complete polarization, Bp, remains 2-3 times smaller than predicted for a disorder free system. We show, in particular…
Topological superconductors have attracted tremendous excitement as they are predicted to host Majorana zero modes that can be utilized for topological quantum computing. Candidate topological superconductor Sn1-xInxTe thin films (0<x<0.3) grown by molecular beam epitaxy and strained in the (111) plane are shown to host three coexisting quantum effects: localization, antilocalization and superconducting fluctuations above the critical temperature Tc. An analysis of the normal state magnetoresistance reveals these effects. Weak localization is consistently observed in superconducting samples, i…
We separate localization and interaction effects in epitaxial graphene devices grown on the C-face of a 4H-SiC substrate by analyzing the low temperature conductivities. Weak localization and antilocalization are extracted at low magnetic fields, after elimination of a geometric magnetoresistance and subtraction of the magnetic field dependent Drude conductivity. The electron electron interaction correction is extracted at higher magnetic fields, where localization effects disappear. Both phenomena are weak but sizable and of the same order of magnitude. If compared to graphene on silicon diox…
This work presents results of ab-initio simulations of continuous wave transport in disordered absorbing waveguides. Wave interference effects cause deviations from diffusive picture of wave transport and make the diffusion coefficient position- and absorption-dependent. As a consequence, the true limit of a zero diffusion coefficient is never reached in an absorbing random medium of infinite size, instead, the diffusion coefficient saturates at some finite constant value. Transition to this absorption-limited diffusion exhibits a universality which can be captured within the framework of the …

One of the most important discoveries in spintronics is the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) recently observed in both insulating and (semi-)conducting magnets. However, the very existence of the effect in transverse configuration is still a subject of current debates, due to conflicting results reported in different experiments. Present understanding of the SSE is mainly based on a particle-like picture with the local equilibrium approximation (LEA), i.e., spatially resolved temperature-field assumed to describe the system. In this work, we abandon the LEA to some extent and develop a wave theory to…
Using the modified perturbation theory, we theoretically study the nonequilibrium Andreev transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads (N-QD-S), which is strongly influenced by the Kondo and superconducting correlations. From the numerical calculation, we find that the renormalized couplings between the leads and the dot in the equilibrium states characterize the peak formation in the nonequilibrium differential conductance. In particular, in the Kondo regime, the enhancement of the Andreev transport via a Kondo resonance occurs in the differential conductance at…
We present Fokker-Planck equations that describe transport of heat and spin in dirty unconventional superconducting quantum wires. Four symmetry classes are distinguished, depending on the presence or absence of time-reversal and spin rotation invariance. In the absence of spin-rotation symmetry, heat transport is anomalous in that the mean conductance decays like $1/\sqrt{L}$ instead of exponentially fast for large enough length $L$ of the wire. The Fokker-Planck equations in the presence of time-reversal symmetry are solved exactly and the mean conductance for quasiparticle transport is calc…
Proximity induced quantum coherence of electrons in multi-terminal voltage-driven hybrid normal-superconducting nanostructures may result in a non-trivial interplay between topology-dependent Josephson and Aharonov-Bohm effects. We elucidate a trade-off between stimulation of the voltage-dependent Josephson current due to non-equilibrium effects and quantum dephasing of quasiparticles causing reduction of both Josephson and Aharonov-Bohm currents. We also predict phase-shifted quantum coherent oscillations of the induced electrostatic potential as a function of the externally applied magnetic …
In this work we present a detailed analysis of the interplay of Coulomb effects and different mechanisms that can lead to carrier localization effects in c-plane InGaN/GaN quantum wells. As mechanisms for carrier localization we consider here effects introduced by random alloy fluctuations as well as structural inhomogeneities such as well width fluctuations. Special attention is paid to the impact of the well width on the results. All calculations have been carried out in the framework of atomistic tight-binding theory. Our theoretical investigations show that independent of the here studied …
Rapid miniaturization of electronic devices and circuits demands profound understanding of fluctuation phenomena at the nanoscale. Superconducting nanowires -- serving as important building blocks for such devices -- may seriously suffer from fluctuations which tend to destroy long-range order and suppress superconductivity. In particular, quantum phase slips (QPS) proliferating at low temperatures may turn a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor into a resistor or an insulator. Here, we introduce a physical concept of QPS-controlled localization of Cooper pairs that may occur even in uniform n…
The magnetic field is shown to affect significantly non-equilibrium quasiparticle (QP) distributions under conditions of inverse proximity effect on the remarkable example of a single-electron hybrid turnstile. This effect suppresses the gap in the superconducting leads in the vicinity of turnstile junctions with a Coulomb blockaded island, thus, trapping hot QPs in this region. Applied magnetic field creates additional QP traps in the form of vortices or regions with reduced superconducting gap in the leads resulting in release of QPs away from junctions. We present clear experimental evidenc…
We analyze charge tunneling statistics and current noise in a superconducting single-electron transistor in a regime where the Josephson-quasiparticle cycle is the dominant mechanism of transport. Due to the interplay between Coulomb blockade and Josephson coherence, the probability distribution for tunneling events strongly deviates from a Poissonian and displays a pronounced even--odd asymmetry in the number of transmitted charges. The interplay between charging and coherence is reflected also in the zero-frequency current noise which is significantly quenched when the quasi-particle tunneli…
Topological insulators are insulating in the bulk but possess metallic surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report a detailed electronic transport study in high quality Bi2Se3 topological insulator thin films contacted by superconducting (In, Al and W) electrodes. The resistance of the film shows an abrupt and significant upturn when the electrodes become superconducting. In turn, the Bi2Se3 film strongly weakens the superconductivity of the electrodes, significantly reducing both their transition temperatures and critical fields. A possible interpretation of these resu…
We consider a quantum dot coupled to both superconducting and spin-polarized electrodes, and study the triad interplay of the Kondo effect, superconductivity, and ferromagnetism, any pair of which compete with and suppress each other. We find that the interplay leads to a mixed-valence quantum phase transition, which for other typical sysmstems is merely a crossover rather than a true transition. At the transition, the system changes from the spin doublet to singlet state. The singlet phase is adiabatically connected (through crossovers) to the so-called 'charge Kondo state' and to the superco…
We theoretically study the superconducting properties of multi-band two-dimensional transition metal oxide superconductors by analyzing not only the role played by conventional singlet pairings, but also by the triplet order parameters, favored by the spin-orbit couplings present in these ma- terials. In particular, we focus on the two-dimensional electron gas at the (001) interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 band insulators where the low electron densities and the sizeable spin-orbit couplings affect the superconducting features. Our theoretical study is based on an extended su- perconducting …
Superconducting circuits provide a new platform to study nonstationary cavity QED phenomena. An example of such a phenomenon is a dynamical Lamb effect which is a parametric excitation of an atom due to the nonadiabatic modulation of its Lamb shift. This effect has been initially introduced for a natural atom in a varying cavity, while we suggested its realization in a superconducting qubit-cavity system with dynamically tunable coupling. In the present paper, we study the interplay between the dynamical Lamb effect and the energy dissipation, which is unavoidable in realistic systems. We find…
The multifractal superconducting state originates from the interplay of Anderson localization and interaction effects. In this article we overview the recent theory of the superconductivity enhancement by multifractality and extend it to describe the spectral properties of superconductors on the scales of the order of the superconducting gap. Specifically, using the approach based on renormalization group within the nonlinear sigma model, we develop the theory of a multifractal superconducting state in thin films. We derive a modified Usadel equation that incorporates the interplay of disorder…
We investigate the topological properties and the accessible Majorana fermion (MF) phases arising in a hybrid device consisting of a chain of magnetic adatoms placed on the surface of a conventional superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). By identifying the favored classical magnetic ground state of the adatom chain, we extract the corresponding phase diagram which exhibits an interplay of ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AFM) and spiral orders. We determine the parameter regime for which the FM or AFM phases dominate over the spiral and additionally become stable against t…
The observation of quantum light emission from atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides has opened a new field of applications for these material systems. The corresponding excited charge-carrier localization has been linked to defects and strain, while open questions remain regarding the microscopic origin. We demonstrate that the bending rigidity of these materials leads to wrinkling of the two-dimensional layer. The resulting strain field facilitates strong carrier localization due to its pronounced influence on the band gap. Additionally, we consider charge carrier confinement due …
The non-monotonic behavior of the NMR signal linewidth in the 2D quantum Hall system is explained in terms of the interplay between skyrmions localization, due to the influence of disorder, and the non-trivial temperature dependent skyrmion dynamics.
We study low-energy transport through a quantum dot coupled to one normal and two superconducting (SC) leads in a junction of Y-shape. In this geometry a crossover between Kondo dominated and Cooper-pairing dominated states occurs by tuning the parameters such as the quantized energy level of the dot and the Josephson phase, which induces a supercurrent flowing between the two SC leads through the dot. Furthermore, Andreev scattering takes place at the interface between the dot and normal lead. The low-lying energy states of this system can be described by a local Fermi-liquid theory for inter…
Symmetry-protected spectral topology in non-Hermitian systems has interesting manifestations such as dynamically anomalous chiral currents and skin effect. We study the interplay between symmetries and disorder in a paradigmatic model for spectral topology - the non-reciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We numerically study the effect of disorder in on-site and non-reciprocal hopping terms. Using a real-space winding number, we investigate the impact of disorder on the spectral topology and the anomalous chiral modes under periodic boundary conditions. We discover a remarkable robustness of c…
Localization and delocalization of non-interacting quasiparticle states in a superconducting wire are reconsidered, for the cases in which spin-rotation symmetry is absent, and time-reversal symmetry is either broken or unbroken; these are referred to as symmetry classes BD and DIII, respectively. We show that, if a continuum limit is taken to obtain a Fokker-Planck (FP) equation for the transfer matrix, as in some previous work, then when there are more than two scattering channels, all terms that break a certain symmetry are lost. It was already known that the resulting FP equation exhibits …
We study a chain of magnetic impurities on a conventional superconductor with spin-orbit coupling, treating the superconducting order fully self-consistently. We find and quantify strong hybridization between the topological edge Majorana bound states (MBSs) and in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states, which causes increasing energy oscillations as a function of magnetic impurity strength, even when the direct MBS overlap is negligible. By treating the MBS as a topological boundary state, dependent only on the effective mass gap, we arrive at a fully parameter-free functional form of the its loca…
We study a one-dimensional (1D) interacting electronic liquid coupled to a 1D array of classical magnetic moments and to a superconductor. We show that at low energy and temperature the magnetic moments and the electrons become strongly entangled and that a magnetic spiral structure emerges without any adjustable parameters. For strong enough coupling between the two, the 1D electronic liquid is driven into a topological superconducting phase supporting Majorana fermions without any fine-tuning of external parameters. Our analysis applies at low enough temperature to a quantum wire in proximit…
We study the superconducting instability in disordered non-centrosymmetric monolayers with intrinsic Ising spin-orbit coupling (SOC) subjected to an in-plane Zeeman magnetic field. The pairing interaction contains the channels allowed by crystal symmetry, such that in general, the pairing state is a mixture of singlet and triplet Cooper pairs. The joint action of SOC and Zeeman field selects a specific in-plane $\mathbf{d}$-vector triplet component to couple with the singlets, which gains robustness against disorder through the coupling. The out-of-plane $\mathbf{d}$-vector component, that in …
We investigate the nucleation of superconductivity in a superconducting Al strip under the influence of the magnetic field generated by a current-carrying Nb wire, perpendicularly oriented and located underneath the strip. The inhomogeneous magnetic field, induced by the Nb wire, produces a spatial modulation of the critical temperature T_c, leading to a controllable localization of the superconducting order parameter (OP) wave function. We demonstrate that close to the phase boundary T_c(B_ext) the localized OP solution can be displaced reversibly by either applying an external perpendicular …
Superconducting diode effect, in analogy to the nonreciprocal resistive charge transport in semiconducting diode, is a nonreciprocity of dissipationless supercurrent. Such an exotic phenomenon originates from intertwining between symmetry-constrained supercurrent transport and intrinsic quantum functionalities of helical/chiral superconductors. In this article, research progress of superconducting diode effect including fundamental concepts, material aspects, device prospects, and theoretical/experimental development is reviewed. First, fundamental mechanisms to cause superconducting diode eff…
The interplay between various many body effects in a quantum dot attached to two normal and one superconducting lead is considered in the limit of large superconducting gap. By the proximity effect the superconducting lead induces pairing correlations on the quantum dot. In the subgap region one observes the anomalous tunneling via direct and crossed Andreev scattering, whereas the usual single particle electronic transfer is suppressed. The interactions of electrons on the dot leading to such phenomena as the Coulomb blockade and the Kondo effect severely modify the currents flowing in the sy…
