We propose nonlinear semi-discrete and discrete models for the elastic energy induced by a finite systems of edge dislocations in two dimensions. Within the dilute regime, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the nonlinear elastic energy, as the core-radius (in the semi-discrete model) and the lattice spacing (in the purely discrete one) vanish. Our analysis passes through a linearization procedure within the rigorous framework of Gamma-convergence.
We consider periodic piecewise affine functions, defined on the real line, with two given slopes and prescribed length scale of the regions where the slope is negative. We prove that, in such a class, the minimizers of $s$-fractional Gagliardo seminorm densities, with $0<s<1$, are in fact periodic with the minimal possible period determined by the prescribed slopes and length scale. Then, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the energy density as the ratio between the length of the two intervals where the slope is constant vanishes. Our results, for $s=\frac 1 2$, have relevant applications…
In this paper, we prove the convergence from the atomistic model to the Peierls--Nabarro (PN) model of two-dimensional bilayer system with complex lattice. We show that the displacement field of the dislocation solution of the PN model converges to the dislocation solution of the atomistic model with second-order accuracy. The consistency of PN model and the stability of atomistic model are essential in our proof. The main idea of our approach is to use several low-degree polynomials to approximate the energy due to atomistic interactions of different groups of atoms of the complex lattice.
We consider a discrete model of planar elasticity where the particles, in the reference configuration, sit on a regular triangular lattice and interact through nearest neighbor pairwise potentials, with bonds modeled as linearized elastic springs. Within this framework we introduce plastic slip fields, whose discrete circulation around each triangle detects the possible presence of an edge dislocation. We provide a $Γ$-convergence analysis, as the lattice spacing tends to zero, of the elastic energy induced by edge dislocations in the energy regime corresponding to a finite number of geometric…
We consider a semi-linear integro-differential equation in dimension one associated to the half Laplacian %This model describes the evolution of phase transitions associated to dislocations. whose solution represents the atom dislocation in a crystal. The equation comprises the evolutive version of the classical Peierls-Nabarro model. We show that for a large number of dislocations, the solution, properly rescaled, converges to the solution of a well known equation called by Head \cite{H} "the equation of motion of the dislocation continuum". The limit equation is a model for the macroscopic c…
In this paper we derive the continuum limit of a multiple-species, interacting particle system by proving a $Γ$-convergence result on the interaction energy as the number of particles tends to infinity. As the leading application, we consider $n$ edge dislocations in multiple slip systems. Since the interaction potential of dislocations has a logarithmic singularity at zero with a sign that depends on the orientation of the slip systems, the interaction energy is unbounded from below. To make the minimization problem of this energy meaningful, we follow the common approach to regularise the in…
We study variational models for dislocations in three dimensions in the line-tension scaling. We present a unified approach which allows to treat energies with subquadratic growth at infinity and other regularizations of the singularity near the dislocation lines. We show that the asymptotics via Gamma convergence is independent of the specific choice of the energy and of the regularization procedure.

We derive strain-gradient plasticity from a nonlocal phase-field model of dislocations in a plane. Both a continuous energy with linear growth depending on a measure which characterizes the macroscopic dislocation density and a nonlocal effective energy representing the far-field interaction between dislocations arise naturally as scaling limits of the nonlocal elastic interaction. Relaxation and formation of microstructures at intermediate scales are automatically incorporated in the limiting procedure based on $Γ$-convergence.
