We study in this paper the monotonicity properties of the numerical solutions to Volterra integral equations with nonincreasing completely positive kernels on nonuniform meshes. There is a duality between the complete positivity and the properties of the complementary kernel being nonnegative and nonincreasing. Based on this, we propose the ``complementary monotonicity'' to describe the nonincreasing completely positive kernels, and the ``right complementary monotone'' (R-CMM) kernels as the analogue for nonuniform meshes. We then establish the monotonicity properties of the numerical solutions inherited from the continuous equation if the discretization has the R-CMM property. Such a property seems weaker than being log-convex and there is no resctriction on the step size ratio of the discretization for the R-CMM property to hold.
Our study aims to specify the asymptotic error distribution in the discretization of a stochastic Volterra equation with a fractional kernel. It is well-known that for a standard stochastic differential equation, the discretization error, normalized with its rate of convergence $1/\sqrt{n}$, converges in law to the solution of a certain linear equation. Similarly to this, we show that a suitably normalized discretization error of the Volterra equation converges in law to the solution of a certain linear Volterra equation with the same fractional kernel.
We consider a discretization of Caputo derivatives resulted from deconvolving a scheme for the corresponding Volterra integral. Properties of this discretization, including signs of the coefficients, comparison principles, and stability of the corresponding implicit schemes, are proved by its linkage to Volterra integrals with completely monotone kernels. We then apply the backward scheme corresponding to this discretization to two time fractional dissipative problems, and these implicit schemes are helpful for the analysis of the corresponding problems. In particular, we show that the overdam…
In this work, the z-transform is presented to analyze time-discrete solutions for Volterra integrodifferential equations (VIDEs) with nonsmooth multi-term kernels in the Hilbert space, and this class of continuous problem was first considered and analyzed by Hannsgen and Wheeler (SIAM J Math Anal 15 (1984) 579-594). This work discusses three cases of kernels $β_q(t)$ included in the integrals for the multi-term VIDEs, from which we use corresponding numerical techniques to approximate the solution of multi-term VIDEs in different cases. Firstly, for the case of $β_1(t), β_2(t) \in \mathrm{L}_1…
The time fractional ODEs are equivalent to convolutional Volterra integral equations with completely monotone kernels. We therefore introduce the concept of complete monotonicity-preserving ($\mathcal{CM}$-preserving) numerical methods for fractional ODEs, in which the discrete convolutional kernels inherit the $\mathcal{CM}$ property as the continuous equations. We prove that $\mathcal{CM}$-preserving schemes are at least $A(π/2)$ stable and can preserve the monotonicity of solutions to scalar nonlinear autonomous fractional ODEs, both of which are novel. Significantly, by improving a result …
In this paper, we propose a monotone mixed finite difference scheme for solving the two-dimensional Monge-Ampère equation. In order to accomplish this, we convert the Monge-Ampère equation to an equivalent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. Based on the HJB formulation, we apply the standard 7-point stencil discretization, which is second order accurate, to the grid points wherever monotonicity holds, and apply semi-Lagrangian wide stencil discretization elsewhere to ensure monotonicity on the entire computational domain. By dividing the admissible control set into six regions and optimiz…
Motivated by fractional derivative models in viscoelasticity, a class of semilinear stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations, and their deterministic counterparts, are considered. A generalized exponential Euler method, named here as the Mittag-Leffler Euler integrator, is used for the temporal discretization, while the spatial discretization is performed by the spectral Galerkin method. The temporal rate of strong convergence is found to be (almost) twice compared to when the backward Euler method is used together with a convolution quadrature for time discretization. Numerical expe…
For solving unsteady hyperbolic conservation laws on cut cell meshes, the so called small cell problem is a big issue: one would like to use a time step that is chosen with respect to the background mesh and use the same time step on the potentially arbitrarily small cut cells as well. For explicit time stepping schemes this leads to instabilities. In a recent preprint [arXiv:1906.05642], we propose penalty terms for stabilizing a DG space discretization to overcome this issue for the unsteady linear advection equation. The usage of the proposed stabilization terms results in stable schemes of…
In this paper, an epidemic model with spatial dependence is studied and results regarding its stability and numerical approximation are presented. We consider a generalization of the original Kermack and McKendrick model in which the size of the populations differs in space. The use of local spatial dependence yields a system of partial-differential equations with integral terms. The uniqueness and qualitative properties of the continuous model are analyzed. Furthermore, different spatial and temporal discretizations are employed, and step-size restrictions for the discrete model's positivity,…
In this work, we develop a multifactor approximation for $d$-dimensional Stochastic Volterra Equations (SVE) with Lipschitz coefficients and kernels of completely monotone type that may be singular. First, we prove an $L^2$-estimation between two SVEs with different kernels, which provides a quantification of the error between the SVE and any multifactor Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) approximation. For the particular rough kernel case with Hurst parameter lying in $(0,1/2)$, we propose various approximating multifactor kernels, state their rates of convergence and illustrate their eff…
We study a general class of singular degenerate parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) which include, in particular, the stochastic porous medium equations and the stochastic fast diffusion equation. We propose a fully discrete numerical approximation of the considered SPDEs based on the very weak formulation. By exploiting the monotonicity properties of the proposed formulation we prove the convergence of the numerical approximation towards the unique solution. Furthermore, we construct an implementable finite element scheme for the spatial discretization of the very weak…
We discretize the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with additive noise by means of a spectral Galerkin method in space and a tamed version of the exponential Euler method in time. The resulting error bounds are analyzed for the spatio-temporal full discretization in both strong and weak senses. Different from existing works, we develop a new and direct approach for the weak error analysis, which does not rely on the use of the associated Kolmogorov equation or Itô's formula and is therefore non-Markovian in nature. Such an approach thus has a potential to be applied to non-Markovian equations su…
An initial-boundary value problem with a Caputo time derivative of fractional order $α\in(0,1)$ is considered, solutions of which typically exhibit a singular behaviour at an initial time. An L2-type discrete fractional-derivative operator of order $3-α$ is considered on nonuniform temporal meshes. Sufficient conditions for the inverse-monotonicity of this operator are established, which yields sharp pointwise-in-time error bounds on quasi-graded temporal meshes with arbitrary degree of grading. In particular, those results imply that milder (compared to the optimal) grading yields optimal con…
We study a numerical approximation for a nonlinear variable-order fractional differential equation via an integral equation method. Due to the lack of the monotonicity of the discretization coefficients of the variable-order fractional derivative in standard approximation schemes, existing numerical analysis techniques do not apply directly. By an approximate inversion technique, the proposed model is transformed as a second kind Volterra integral equation, based on which a collocation method under uniform or graded mesh is developed and analyzed. In particular, the error estimates improve the…

We propose a class of numerical integration methods for stochastic Poisson systems (SPSs) of arbitrary dimensions. Based on the Darboux-Lie theorem, we transform the SPSs to their canonical form, the generalized stochastic Hamiltonian systems (SHSs), via canonical coordinate transformations found by solving certain PDEs defined by the Poisson brackets of the SPSs. An a-generating function approach with α\in [0,1] is then used to create symplectic discretizations of the SHSs, which are then transformed back by the inverse coordinate transformation to numerical integrators for the SPSs. These in…
In this work, we determine the full expression for the global truncation error of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). In particular, we use theoretical analysis and symbolic algebra to find exact expressions for the coefficients of the generic global truncation error. Our analysis is valid for any hyperbolic PDE, be it linear or non-linear, and employing finite difference, finite volume, or finite element discretization in space, and advanced in time with a predictor-corrector, multistep, or a deferred correction method, belonging to the Method of Lines. Furthermore, we discuss t…
Stochastic optimal principle leads to the resolution of a partial differential equation (PDE), namely the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. In general, this equation cannot be solved analytically, thus numerical algorithms are the only tools to provide accurate approximations. The aims of this paper is to introduce a novel fitted finite volume method to solve high dimensional degenerated HJB equation from stochastic optimal control problems in high dimension ($ n\geq 3$). The challenge here is due to the nature of our HJB equation which is a degenerated second-order partial differential …
In this paper, we study a time-fractional initial-boundary value problem of Kirchhoff type involving memory term for non-homogeneous materials. The energy argument is applied to derive the a priori bounds on the solution of the considered problem. Consequently, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution to the problem under consideration. We keep the time variable continuous and discretize the space domain using a conforming FEM to obtain the semi discrete formulation of the problem. The semi discrete error analysis is carried out by modifying the standard Ritz-Volterra project…
We present a Lagrangian-Eulerian scheme to solve the shallow water equations in the case of spatially variable bottom geometry. Using a local curvilinear reference system anchored on the bottom surface, we develop an effective first-order and high-resolution space-time discretization of the no-flow surfaces and solve a Lagrangian initial value problem that describes the evolution of the balance laws governing the geometrically intrinsic shallow water equations. The evolved solution set is then projected back to the original surface grid to complete the proposed Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation.…
In this work, we present a reduced-order model for a nonlinear cross-diffusion problem from population dynamics, for the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) equation with Lotka-Volterra kinetics. The finite-difference discretization of the SKT equation in space results in a system of linear--quadratic ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The reduced order model (ROM) has the same linear-quadratic structure as the full order model (FOM). Using the linear-quadratic structure of the ROM, the reduced-order solutions are computed independent of the full solutions with the proper orthogonal decompo…
The aim of this paper is to study the recovery of a spatially dependent potential in a (sub)diffusion equation from overposed final time data. We construct a monotone operator one of whose fixed points is the unknown potential. The uniqueness of the identification is theoretically verified by using the monotonicity of the operator and a fixed point argument. Moreover, we show a conditional stability in Hilbert spaces under some suitable conditions on the problem data. Next, a completely discrete scheme is developed, by using Galerkin finite element method in space and finite difference method …
