We give an overview of analytical results concerned with chemotaxis systems where the signal is absorbed. We recall results on existence and properties of solutions for the prototypical chemotaxis-consumption model and various variants and review more recent findings on its ability to support the emergence of spatial structures.
In this paper we study a two-dimensional chemotaxis-consumption system with singular sensitivity and endowed with Neumann boundary conditions. Sufficient conditions on the data of the problem are given so that the globability of classical solutions is shown, thus excluding any finite-time blow-up scenario.
Global weak solutions to a chemotaxis model with local sensing and consumption are shown to converge to spatially homogeneous steady states in the large time limit, when the motility is assumed to be positive and $C^1$-smooth on $[0,\infty)$. The result is valid in arbitrary space dimension $n\ge 1$ and extends a previous result which only deals with space dimensions $n\in \{1,2,3\}$.
We show the existence of locally bounded global solutions to the chemotaxis system \[ u_t = \nabla\cdot(D(u)\nabla u) - \nabla\cdot(\frac{u}{v} \nabla v) \] \[ v_t = Δv - uv \] with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and suitably regular positive initial data in smooth bounded domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq2$, for $D(u)\geq δu^{m-1}$ with some $δ>0$, provided that $m>1+\frac N4$.
Global existence and boundedness of classical solutions of the chemotaxis--consumption system \begin{align*} n_t &= Δn - \nabla \cdot (n \nabla c), \\ 0 &= Δc - nc, \end{align*} under no-flux boundary conditions for $n$ and Robin-type boundary conditions \[ \partial_ν c = (γ-c) g \] for $c$ (with $γ>0$ and $C^{1+β}(\partialΩ) \ni g > 0$ for some $β\in(0,1)$) are established in bounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $N\ge 1$. Under a smallness condition on $γ$, moreover, we show convergence to the stationary solution.
This paper investigates a high-dimensional chemotaxis system with consumption of chemoattractant \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} u_t=Δu-\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v), v_t=Δv-uv, \end{array}\right. \end{eqnarray*} under homogeneous boundary conditions of Neumann type, in a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n~(n\geq4)$ with smooth boundary. It is proved that if initial data satisfy $u_0\in C^0(\overlineΩ)$ and $v_0\in W^{1,q}(Ω)$ for some $q>n$, the model possesses at least one global renormalized solution.
This paper deals with the homogeneous Neumann boundary-value problem for the chemotaxis-consumption system \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{array}{llc} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla\cdot (u\nabla v)+κu-μu^2,\\ v_t=Δv-uv, \end{array} \end{eqnarray*} in $N$-dimensional bounded smooth domains for suitably regular positive initial data. We shall establish the existence of a global bounded classical solution for suitably large $μ$ and prove that for any $μ>0$ there exists a weak solution. Moreover, in the case of $κ>0$ convergence to the constant equilibrium $(\fracκμ,0)$ is shown.
Previous studies of chemotaxis models with consumption of the chemoattractant (with or without fluid) have not been successful in explaining pattern formation even in the simplest form of concentration near the boundary, which had been experimentally observed. Following the suggestions that the main reason for that is usage of inappropriate boundary conditions, in this article we study solutions to the stationary chemotaxis system \[ \begin{cases} 0 = Δn - \nabla\cdot(n\nabla c) \\ 0 = Δc - nc \end{cases} \] in bounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\ge 1$, under no-flux boundary conditions…
In this paper we study the zero-flux chemotaxis-system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu -χ\nabla \cdot (\frac{u}{v} \nabla v) \\ v_t=Δv-f(u)v \end{cases} \end{equation*} in a smooth and bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$, with $χ>0$ and $f\in C^1(\mathbb{R})$ essentially behaving like $u^β$, $0<β<1$. Precisely for $χ<1$ and any sufficiently regular initial data $u(x,0)\geq 0$ and $v(x,0)>0$ on $\barΩ$, we show the existence of global classical solutions. Moreover, if additionally $m:=\int_Ωu(x,0)$ is sufficiently small, then also their boundedness is achieved.
In this work we investigate the following chemo-attraction with consumption model in bounded domains of \, $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N=1,2,3$): $$ \partial_t u - Δu = - \nabla \cdot (u \nabla v), \quad \partial_t v - Δv = - u^s v $$ where $s\ge 1$, endowed with isolated boundary conditions and initial conditions for $(u,v)$. The main novelty in the model is the nonlinear potential consumption term $u^sv$. Through the convergence of solutions of an adequate truncated model, two main results are established; existence of uniform in time weak solutions in $3D$ domains, and uniqueness and regularity in $2D…
Well-posedness and uniform-in-time boundedness of classical solutions are investigated for a three-component parabolic system which describes the dynamics of a population of cells interacting with a chemoattractant and a nutrient. The former induces a chemotactic bias in the diffusive motion of the cells and is accounted for by a density-suppressed motility. Well-posedness is first established for generic positive and non-increasing motility functions vanishing at infinity. Growth conditions on the motility function guaranteeing the uniform-in-time boundedness of solutions are next identified.…
The chemotaxis system \begin{align*} u_t &= Δu - \nabla \cdot (u\nabla v), \\ v_t &= Δv - uv, \end{align*} is considered under the boundary conditions $\frac{\partial u}{\partialν}- u\frac{\partial v}{\partialν}=0$ and $v=v_\star$ on $\partialΩ$, where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is a ball and $v_\star$ is a given positive constant. In the setting of radially symmetric and suitably regular initial data, a result on global existence of bounded classical solutions is derived in the case $n=2$, while global weak solutions are constructed when $n\in \{3,4,5\}$. This is achieved by analyzing an energy-t…
For the classical zero-flux chemotaxis-consumption model \begin{equation*} u_t= Δu - χ\nabla \cdot (u \nabla v) \quad \textrm{and}\quad v_t=Δv- uv, \quad \text{ with } (x,t)\in Ω\times (0,T_{max}), \end{equation*} $Ω$ being a bounded and smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, $χ$ some positive number and $T_{max} \in (0,\infty]$, the following was established in a paper by Tao: for every sufficiently regular initial data $u(x,0)=u_0(x)\geq 0$ and $v(x,0)=v_0(x) \geq 0$, there is $χ(\lVert v_0 \rVert_{L^\infty(Ω)})$ such that for all $0<χ\leq χ(\lVert v_0 \rVert_{L^\infty(Ω)})$, the initia…
We consider a chemotaxis-fluid system involving nonlinear cell diffusion of porous medium type, signal consumption by cells, and rather general, possibly matrix-valued, chemotactic sensitivities. It is shown that if the corresponding diffusion exponent $m$ satisfies $m>7/6$, then for all reasonably regaular initial data an associated initial-boundary value problem in smoothly bounded three-dimensional domains possesses a globally defined weak solution which is bounded. Under a mild additional assumption on the signal consumption rate, it is moreover shown that any nontrivial of these solutions…
In this work, we study global existence, eventual smoothness and asymptotical behavior of positive solutions for a two-species chemotaxis consumption model in a bounded smooth but not necessarily convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n (n=2,3,4,5)$ with nonnegative initial data and homogeneous Neumann boundary data Under a smallness condition, boundedness of classical solutions and stabilization to constant equilibrium is known. Here, without any smallness condition, we show global existence and uniform-in-time boundedness of classical solutions in 2D and global existence, eventual smoothness and…
We consider the system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} n_t + u \cdot \nabla n = Δn - χ\nabla \cdot (\frac{n}{c} \nabla c), \\ c_t + u \cdot \nabla c = Δc - nf(c), \\ u_t + (u \cdot \nabla) u = Δu + \nabla P + n \nabla ϕ, \quad \nabla \cdot u = 0, \end{cases} \end{align*} in smooth bounded domains $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$, $N \in \mathbb N$, for given $f \ge 0$, $ϕ$ and complemented with initial and homogeneous Neumann--Neumann--Dirichlet boundary conditions, which models aerobic bacteria in a fluid drop. We assume $f(0) = 0$ and $f'(0) = 0$, that is, that $f$ decays slower than linearly near $0$, a…
In present paper, we consider a chemotaxis consumption system with density-signal governed sensitivity and logistic source: $u_t=Δu-\nabla\cdot(\frac{S(u)}{v}\nabla v)+ru-μu^2$, $v_t=Δv-uv$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ $(n\ge2)$, where parameters $r,μ>0$ and density governed sensitivity fulfills $ S(u) \simeq u(u+1)^{β-1}$ for all $u\ge0$ with $β\in \mathbb{R}$. It is proved that for any $r,μ>0$, there exists a global classical solution if $β<1$ and $n\ge2$. Moreover, the global boundedness and the asymptotic behavior of the classical solution are determined for the case $…
This paper is concerned with the Neumann initial-boundary value problem for the two-species chemotaxis system with consumption of chemoattractant \begin{equation*} u_t=Δu-χ_1\nabla\cdot(u\nabla w), \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} v_t=Δv-χ_2\nabla\cdot(v\nabla w), \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} w_t=Δw-(αu+βv)w \end{equation*} in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq2$), where the parameters $χ_1$, $χ_2$, $α$ and $β$ are positive. It is proved that if \begin{equation*} \max\{χ_1,χ_2\}\|w(x,0)\|_{L^{\infty}(Ω)}<\sqrt{\frac{2}{n}}π\end{equation*} the problem possesses a uniqu…
We study a chemotaxis-Stokes system with signal consumption and logistic source terms of the form \noindent \begin{align*} \left\{ \begin{array}{r@{\ }l@{\quad}l@{\quad}l@{\,}c} n_{t}+u\cdot\!\nabla n&=Δn-\nabla\!\cdot(n\nabla c)+κn-μn^{2},\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ c_{t}+u\cdot\!\nabla c&=Δc-nc,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ u_{t}&=Δu+\nabla P+n\nablaϕ,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ \nabla\cdot u&=0,\ &x\inΩ,& t>0,\\ \big(\nabla n-n\nabla c\big)\cdotν&=0,\quad c=c_{\star}(x),\quad u=0, &x\in\partialΩ,& t>0, \end{array}\right. \end{align*} where $κ\geq0$, $μ>0$ and, in contrast to the commonly investigated variants of chemotaxi…
A chemotaxis system possibly containing rotational components of the cross-diffusive flux is studied under no-flux boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset R^n$, $n\ge 1$, with smooth boundary, where the evolution of the signal is determined by consumption through cells. In contrast to related Keller-Segel-type problems with scalar sensitivities, in presence of such tensor-valued sensitivities this system in general apparently does not possess any useful gradient-like structure. Accordingly, its analysis needs to be based on new types of a priori bounds. Using a spatio-temporal $L^2$ …
Two relaxation features of the migration-consumption chemotaxis system involving signal-dependent motilities, $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{l} u_t = Δ\big(uϕ(v)\big), \\[1mm] v_t = Δv-uv, \end{array} \right. \qquad \qquad (\star)$$ are studied in smoothly bounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 1$: It is shown that if $ϕ\in C^0([0,\infty))$ is positive on $[0,\infty)$, then for any initial data $(u_0,v_0)$ belonging to the space $(C^0(\overlineΩ))^\star\times L^\infty(Ω)$ an associated no-flux type initial-boundary value problem admits a global very weak solution. Beyond this initial relaxati…
