Real-world visual data exhibit intrinsic hierarchical structures that can be represented effectively in hyperbolic spaces. Hyperbolic neural networks (HNNs) are a promising approach for learning feature representations in such spaces. However, current HNNs in computer vision rely on Euclidean backbones and only project features to the hyperbolic space in the task heads, limiting their ability to fully leverage the benefits of hyperbolic geometry. To address this, we present HCNN, a fully hyperbolic convolutional neural network (CNN) designed for computer vision tasks. Based on the Lorentz model, we generalize fundamental components of CNNs and propose novel formulations of the convolutional layer, batch normalization, and multinomial logistic regression. {Experiments on standard vision tasks demonstrate the promising performance of our HCNN framework in both hybrid and fully hyperbolic settings.} Overall, we believe our contributions provide a foundation for developing more powerful HNNs that can better represent complex structures found in image data. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/kschwethelm/HyperbolicCV.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have recently seen tremendous success in various computer vision tasks. However, their application to problems with high dimensional input and output, such as high-resolution image and video segmentation or 3D medical imaging, has been limited by various factors. Primarily, in the training stage, it is necessary to store network activations for back propagation. In these settings, the memory requirements associated with storing activations can exceed what is feasible with current hardware, especially for problems in 3D. Motivated by the propagation of signal…
Learning good image representations that are beneficial to downstream tasks is a challenging task in computer vision. As such, a wide variety of self-supervised learning approaches have been proposed. Among them, contrastive learning has shown competitive performance on several benchmark datasets. The embeddings of contrastive learning are arranged on a hypersphere that results in using the inner (dot) product as a distance measurement in Euclidean space. However, the underlying structure of many scientific fields like social networks, brain imaging, and computer graphics data exhibit highly n…
Traditional architectures for solving computer vision problems and the degree of success they enjoyed have been heavily reliant on hand-crafted features. However, of late, deep learning techniques have offered a compelling alternative -- that of automatically learning problem-specific features. With this new paradigm, every problem in computer vision is now being re-examined from a deep learning perspective. Therefore, it has become important to understand what kind of deep networks are suitable for a given problem. Although general surveys of this fast-moving paradigm (i.e. deep-networks) exi…

Computer vision tasks such as image classification, image retrieval and few-shot learning are currently dominated by Euclidean and spherical embeddings, so that the final decisions about class belongings or the degree of similarity are made using linear hyperplanes, Euclidean distances, or spherical geodesic distances (cosine similarity). In this work, we demonstrate that in many practical scenarios hyperbolic embeddings provide a better alternative.
Convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) are the actual standard for image recognizement and classification. We initially use three training styles: complete from scratch using random initialization, using a pre-trained ImageNet model training only the last layer adapted to our problem (transfer learning) and a pre-trained m…

Deep Learning-based Computer Vision field has recently been trying to explore larger kernels for convolution to effectively scale up Convolutional Neural Networks. Simultaneously, new paradigm of models such as Vision Transformers find it difficult to scale up to larger higher resolution images due to their quadratic complexity in terms of input sequence. In this report, Fast Fourier Transform is utilised in various ways to provide some solutions to these issues.
Convolutional Neural Networks spread through computer vision like a wildfire, impacting almost all visual tasks imaginable. Despite this, few researchers dare to train their models from scratch. Most work builds on one of a handful of ImageNet pre-trained models, and fine-tunes or adapts these for specific tasks. This is in large part due to the difficulty of properly initializing these networks from scratch. A small miscalibration of the initial weights leads to vanishing or exploding gradients, as well as poor convergence properties. In this work we present a fast and simple data-dependent i…
The puzzle of computer vision might find new challenging solutions when we realize that most successful methods are working at image level, which is remarkably more difficult than processing directly visual streams. In this paper, we claim that their processing naturally leads to formulate the motion invariance principle, which enables the construction of a new theory of learning with convolutional networks. Automated segmentations performed by computers offer quicker diagnoses, the ability to notice small details, and more accurate segmentations. Over the last couple of years, deep learning and especially convolutional neural networks have become one of the work horses of computer vision. One limiting factor for the applicability of supervised deep learning to more areas is the need for large, manually labeled datasets. In this paper we propose an easy to implement method we call guided labeling, which automatically determines which samples from an unlabeled dataset should be labeled. We show that using this procedure, the amount of samples that need to be labeled is reduced considerably in comparison to labeling images arbitrarily.

On the other hand, a different method known as convolutional extreme learning machine has shown the potential to perform equally with a dramatic decrease in training time. Space imagery, especially about small bodies, could be well suited for this method. In this work, convolutional extreme lear…
State-of-the-art computer vision models are rapidly increasing in capacity, where the number of parameters far exceeds the number required to fit the training set. Computer vision is often performed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CNNs are compute-intensive and challenging to deploy on power-contrained systems such as mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. CNNs are compute-intensive because they indiscriminately compute many features on all pixels of the input image. We observe that, given a computer vision task, images often contain pixels that are irrelevant to the task. For example, if the task is looking for cars, pixels in the sky are not very useful. Therefore, we propose that a CNN be modified to only operate on relevant pixels t…
