Very metal-poor stars contain crucial information on the Milky Way's infancy. In our previous study \citep{Plotnikova_2022} we derived a mean age of $\sim$ 13.7 Gyr for a sample of these stars in the Sun's vicinity. In this work, we investigate the chemical and kinematics properties of these stars with the goal of obtaining some insights on their origin and their parent population. We did not find any Al-Mg anti-correlation, which lead us to the conclusion that these stars did not form in globular clusters, while the detailed analysis of their orbital parameters reveals that these stars are most probably associated with the pristine Bulge of the Milky Way. We then sketch a scenario for the formation of the Milky Way in which the first structure to form was the Bulge through rapid collapse. The other components have grown later on, with a significant contribution of accreted structures.
We describe the DR14 APOGEE-TGAS catalogue, a new SDSS value-added catalogue that provides precise astrophysical parameters, chemical abundances, astro-spectro-photometric distances and extinctions, as well as orbital parameters for $\sim 30,000$ APOGEE-TGAS stars, among them $\sim5,000$ high-quality giant stars within 1 kpc.
The ages of the oldest and most metal-poor stars in the Milky Way bear important information on the age of the Universe and its standard model. We analyze a sample of 28 extremely metal-poor field stars in the solar vicinity culled from the literature and carefully determine their ages. To this aim, we critically make use of Gaia data to derive their distances and associated uncertainties. Particular attention has been paid to the estimate of the reddening and its effect on the derivation of stellar ages. We employed different reddenings and super-impose isochrones from different sources in th…
Recent large scale surveys of galactic bulge stars allowed to build a detailed map of the bulge kinematics. The bulge exhibits cylindrical rotation consistent with a disky origin which evolved through bar driven secular evolution. However correlations between metallicity and kinematics complicate this picture. In particular a metal-poor component with distinct kinematic signatures has been detected. Its origin, density profile and link with the other Milky Way stellar populations are currently still poorly constrained.
We present observations obtained with the AAT's 2dF wide field spectrograph AAOmega of K-type stars located within a region of the sky which contains the Virgo Over-Density and the leading arm of the Sagittarius Stream. On the basis of the resulting velocity histogram we isolate halo substructures in these overlapping regions including Sagittarius and previously discovered Virgo groups. Through comparisons with N-body models of the Galaxy-Sagittarius interaction, we find a tri-axial dark matter halo is favoured and we exclude a prolate shape. This result is contradictory with other observation…
The bipolar outflow associated with the Class 0 low-mass protostellar source (IRAS 18148-0440) in L483 has been studied in the CCH and CS line emission at 245 and 262 GHz, respectively. Sub-arcsecond resolution observations of these lines have been conducted with ALMA. Structures and kinematics of the outflow cavity wall are investigated in the CS line, and are analyzed by using a parabolic model of an outflow. We constrain the inclination angle of the outflow to be from 75 degree to 90 degree, i.e. the outflow is blowing almost perpendicular to the line of sight. Comparing the outflow paramet…
We analyze the properties of the circumgalactic gas (CGM) around 120 galaxies with stellar and dark matter halo masses similar to that of the Milky Way. We focus on the morphology and kinematics of the neutral hydrogen and how this depends on f_g, the ratio of gas-to-stellar mass within the optical radius. In gas-rich galaxies with f_g > 0.1, gas temperatures rise slowly from center of the halo out to the virial radius and average neutral gas column densities remain above 10^19 atoms cm^-2 out to radii of 50-70 kpc. In gas-poor galaxies with f_g < 0.1, gas temperatures rise quickly outside the…
Metal-poor stars play an import role in the understanding of Galaxy formation and evolution. Evidence of the early mergers that built up the Galaxy might remain in the distributions of abundances, kinematics, and orbital parameters of the stars. In this work, we report on preliminary results of an on-going chemo-kinematic analysis of a sample of metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\leq$ -1.0) stars observed by the GALAH spectroscopic survey. We explored the chemical and orbital data with unsupervised machine learning (hierarchical clustering, k-means cluster analysis and correlation matrices). Our final goal …
Although there is consensus that metal-rich stars in the Milky Way bulge are formed via secular evolution of the thin disc, the origin of their metal-poor counterparts is still under debate. Two different origins have been invoked for metal-poor stars: they might be classical bulge stars or stars formed via internal evolution of a massive thick disc. We use N-body simulations to calculate the kinematic signature given by the difference in the mean Galactocentric radial velocity ($Δ\rm V_{\rm GC}$) between metal-rich stars ([Fe/H] $\ge$ 0) and moderately metal-poor stars (-1.0 $\le$ [Fe/H] $<$ …
We study the kinematic properties of the Eastern Banded Structure (EBS) and Hydra I overdensity using exquisite proper motions derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Gaia source catalog. Main sequence turn-off stars in the vicinity of the EBS are identified from SDSS photometry; we use the proper motions and, where applicable, spectroscopic measurements of these stars to probe the kinematics of this apparent stream. We find that the EBS and Hydra I share common kinematic and chemical properties with the nearby Monoceros Ring. In particular, the proper motions of the EBS, like Mon…
We find two chemically distinct populations separated relatively cleanly in the [Fe/H] - [Mg/Fe] plane, but also distinguished in other chemical planes, among metal-poor stars (primarily with metallicities [Fe/H] $< -0.9$) observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and analyzed for Data Release 13 (DR13) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These two stellar populations show the most significant differences in their [X/Fe] ratios for the $α$-elements, C+N, Al, and Ni. In addition to these populations having differing chemistry, the low metallicity high-Mg popul…
The extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies analyzed in a previous paper have large star-forming regions with a metallicity lower than the rest of the galaxy. Such a chemical inhomogeneity reveals the external origin of the metal-poor gas fueling star formation, possibly indicating accretion from the cosmic web. This paper studies the kinematic properties of the ionized gas in these galaxies. Most XMPs have rotation velocity around a few tens of km/s. The star-forming regions appear to move coherently. The velocity is constant within each region, and the velocity dispersion sometimes increases wit…
We present 947 radial velocities of RR Lyrae variable stars in four fields located toward the Galactic bulge, observed within the data from the ongoing Bulge RR Lyrae Radial Velocity Assay (BRAVA-RR). We show that these RR Lyrae stars exhibit hot kinematics and null or negligible rotation and are therefore members of a separate population from the bar/pseudobulge that currently dominates the mass and luminosity of the inner Galaxy. Our RR Lyrae stars predate these structures, and have metallicities, kinematics, and spatial distribution that are consistent with a "classical" bulge, although we …
Using of a new N-body simulation, as well as Gaia DR2/EDR3 data complemented by data from the Galah, APOGEE, LAMOST surveys, we explore the possible link between the MW spiral arms, RVphi-ridges and moving groups in local UV space. We show that the tightly wound main spiral arms in the N-body model can be successfully identified using overdensities in angular momentum (AM) or guiding space, as well as in the distribution of dynamically cold stars close to their guiding centers. Stars in the AM overdensities that travel over many kpc in radius trace extended density ridges in RVphi space and ov…
We present radial velocities for stars in the field of the open star clusters Berkeley 44, Berkeley 81, and NGC 6802 from spectra obtained using the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO (WIYN) 3.5 m telescope. These clusters are of intermediate age (1-3 Gyr), located within the solar Galactocentric radius, and have no previous radial velocity measurements. We find mean radial velocities of -9.6 +/- 3.0 km s^-1, 48.1 +/- 2.0 km s^-1, and 12.4 +/- 2.8 km s^-1 for Be 44, Be 81, and NGC 6802, respectively. We present an analysis of radial velocities of 134 open clusters of a wide range of ages using data o…
An abundance analysis is reported of 58 K giants identified by Famaey et al. (2005) as highly probable members of the Hercules stream selected from stars north of the celestial equator in the Hipparcos catalogue. The giants have compositions spanning the interval [Fe/H] from $-$0.17 to $+$0.42 with a mean value of $+$0.15 and relative elemental abundances [El/Fe] representative of the Galactic thin disc. Selection effects may have biassed the selection from the Hipparcos catalogue against the selection of metal-poor stars. Our reconsideration of the recent extensive survey of FG dwarfs which i…
The large amount of chemical and kinematic information available in large spectroscopic surveys have inspired the search for chemically peculiar stars in the field. Though these metal-poor field stars ([Fe/H$]<-1$) are commonly enriched in nitrogen, their detailed spatial, kinematic, and chemical distributions suggest that various groups may exist, and thus their origin is still a mystery. To study these stars statistically, we increase the sample size by identifying new CN-strong stars with LAMOST DR3 for the first time. We use CN-CH bands around 4000 Å~to find CN-strong stars, and further se…
We carry out a joint spatial-kinematical-metallicity analysis of globular clusters (GCs) around the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), using a homogeneous, high-quality spectroscopic dataset. In particular, we remove the contaminating young clusters that have plagued many previous analyses. We find that the clusters can be divided into three major metallicity groups based on their radial distributions: (1) an inner metal-rich group ([Fe/H] > -0.4), (2) a group with intermediate metallicity (with median [Fe/H]=-1), (3) and a metal-poor group, with [Fe/H] < -1.5. The metal-rich group has kinematics and spa…
We have used N-body simulations for the Milky Way to investigate the kinematic and structural properties of the old metal-poor stellar halo in the barred inner region of the Galaxy. We find that the extrapolation of the density distribution for bulge RR Lyrae stars, $ρ\sim r^{-3}$, approximately matches the number density of RR Lyrae in the nearby stellar halo. We follow the evolution of such a tracer population through the formation and evolution of the bar and box/peanut bulge in the N-body model. We find that its density distribution changes from oblate to triaxial, and that it acquires slo…
We analyse a set of very metal-poor stars for which accurate chemical abundances have been obtained as part of the ESO Large Program "First stars" in the light of the Gaia DR2 data. The kinematics and orbital properties of the stars in the sample show they probably belong to the thick disc, partially heated to halo kinematics, and to the accreted Nissen & Schuster-Gaia Sausage-Enceladus satellite. The continuity of these properties with stars at both higher ($\rm [Fe/H]>-2$) and lower metallicities ($\rm [Fe/H]<-4.$) suggests that the Galaxy at $\rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -0.5$ and down to at least $…
The tidal disruption of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy has generated a spectacular stream of stars wrapping around the entire Galaxy. We use data from $Gaia$ and the H3 Stellar Spectroscopic Survey to identify 823 high-quality Sagittarius members based on their angular momenta. The H3 Survey is largely unbiased in metallicity, and so our sample of Sagittarius members is similarly unbiased. Stream stars span a wide range in [Fe/H] from $-0.2$ to $\approx -3.0$, with a mean overall metallicity of $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle=-0.99$. We identify a strong metallicity-dependence to the kinematics of the s…
G112-43/44, alias BD+00_2058 A and B, is a metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -1.3) wide-orbit binary star with extreme kinematics. We use high-precision determinations of the chemical compositions of 94 metal-poor dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood to compare abundance ratios for G112-43/44 with ratios for stars having similar metallicity taking into account the effect of deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium on the derived abundances, and Gaia EDR3 data are used to compare the kinematics. The abundances of the two components of G112-43/44 agree within 0.05 dex for nearly all elements, but th…
We explore a scenario where metal poor globular clusters (GCs) form at the centres of their own dark matter halos in the early universe before reionization. This hypothesis leads to predictions about the abundance, distribution and kinematics of GCs today that we explore using cosmological N-body simulations and analytical modelling. We find that selecting the massive tail of collapsed objects at $z\gtrsim 9$ as GC formation sites leads to four main predictions: i) a highly clustered population of GCs around galaxies today, ii) a natural scaling between number of GCs and halo virial mass that …
Our Galaxy is known to contain a central boxy/peanut-shaped bulge, yet the importance of a classical, pressure-supported component within the central part of the Milky Way is still being debated. It should be most visible at low metallicity, a regime that has not yet been studied in detail. Using metallicity-sensitive narrow-band photometry, the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) has collected a large sample of metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -1.0) stars in the inner Galaxy to address this open question. We use PIGS to trace the metal-poor inner Galaxy kinematics as function of metallicity for the first…
Using high-resolution collisionless N-body simulations we study the properties of tidal tails formed in the immediate vicinity of a two-component dwarf galaxy evolving in a static potential of the Milky Way (MW). The stellar component of the dwarf is initially in the form of a disk and the galaxy is placed on an eccentric orbit motivated by CDM-based cosmological simulations. We measure the orientation, density and velocity distribution of the stars in the tails. Due to the geometry of the orbit, in the vicinity of the dwarf, where the tails are densest and therefore most likely to be detectab…
We have developed a chemo-dynamical approach to assign 36,010 metal-poor SkyMapper stars to various Galactic stellar populations. Using two independent techniques (velocity and action space behavior), $Gaia$ EDR3 astrometry, and photometric metallicities, we selected stars with the characteristics of the "metal-weak" thick disk population by minimizing contamination by the canonical thick disk or other Galactic structures. This sample comprises 7,127 stars, spans a metallicity range of $-3.50<${\metal}~$<-0.8$, and has a systematic rotational velocity of $\langle V_ϕ\rangle=154$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ …
We explore the connections between stellar age, chemistry, and kinematics across a Galactocentric distance of $7.5 < R\,(\mathrm{kpc}) < 9.0$, using a sample of $\sim 12\,000$ intermediate-mass (FGK) turnoff stars observed with the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey. The kinematics of this sample are determined using radial velocity measurements from RAVE, and parallax and proper motion measurements from the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). In addition, ages for RAVE stars are determined using a Bayesian method, taking TGAS parallaxes as a prior. We divide our sample into young ($…
We present the results of the kinematic investigations carried out with the use of spatial velocities of red giants and sub-giants containing in the $Gaia$~EDR3 catalogue. The twelve kinematic parameters of the Ogorodnikov--Milne model have been derived for stellar systems with radii 0.5 and 1.0 kpc, located along the direction the Galactic center -- the Sun -- the Galactic anticenter within the range of Galactocentric distances $R$ 0--8--16~kpc. By combining some of the local parameters the information related to the Galaxy as a whole has been received in the distance range 4--12~kpc, in part…
Interesting chemically peculiar field stars may reflect their stellar evolution history and their possible origin in a different environment from where they are found now, which is one of the most important research fields in Galactic archaeology. To explore this further, we have used the CN-CH bands around 4000 A to identify N-rich metal-poor field stars in LAMOST DR3. Here we expand our N-rich metal-poor field star sample to ~100 stars in LAMOST DR5, where 53 of them are newly found in this work. We investigate light elements of the common stars between our sample and APOGEE DR14. While Mg, …
A list of the Castor stream members is compiled based on the data from various authors. The membership probabilities for some stars are revised based on the individual apex, multiplicity, observational errors, and peculiarity. The apex of the Castor moving group is determined using the apex diagram method. The parameters of the Castor and Ursa Major streams are compared and the positions of the two streams on the apex diagram are found to differ by 225deg, implying that the two groups move in almost opposite directions. Stars of both moving groups are intermixed in space, the Castor stream occ…
(Abridged) We analyzed the stellar parameters and radial velocities of ~1200 stars in five bulge fields as determined from the Gaia-ESO survey data (iDR1). We use VISTA Variables in The Via Lactea (VVV) photometry to obtain reddening values by using a semi-empirical T_eff-color calibration. From a Gaussian decomposition of the metallicity distribution functions, we unveil a clear bimodality in all fields, with the relative size of components depending of the specific position on the sky. In agreement with some previous studies, we find a mild gradient along the minor axis (-0.05 dex/deg betwee…

We present a detailed analysis of the chemistry and kinematics of red giants in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. Spectroscopy at 8500 Angstroms was acquired for 72 red giant stars across two fields using FORS2 at the VLT. Line of sight extinction was individually estimated for each target star to accommodate the variable reddening across NGC 6822. The mean radial velocity was found to be v_helio = (52.8 +/- 2.2) km/s with dispersion rms = 24.1 km/s, in agreement with other studies. Ca II triplet equivalent widths were converted into [Fe/H] metallicities using a V magnitude proxy for surfac…
With a sample of 48,161 K giant stars selected from the LAMOST DR 2 catalogue, we construct torus models in a large volume extending, for the first time, from the solar vicinity to a Galactocentric distance of $\sim 20$ kpc, reaching the outskirts of the Galactic disc. We show that the kinematics of the K giant stars match conventional models, e.g. as created by Binney in 2012, in the Solar vicinity. However such two-disc models fail if they are extended to the outer regions, even if an additional disc component is utilised. If we loosen constraints in the Sun's vicinity, we find that an effec…
Several recent studies have demonstrated that the Galactic bulge hosts two components with different mean metallicities, and possibly different spatial distribution and kinematics. As a consequence, both the metallicity distribution and the radial velocity of bulge stars vary across different line of sights. We present here the metallicity distribution function of red clump stars in 26 fields spread across a wide area of the bulge, with special emphasis on fields close to Galactic plane, at latitudes b=-2 and b=-1, that were not explored before. This paper includes new metallicities from a sam…
We report on the discovery of five carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in the metallicity range of $-3.3<$ [Fe/H] $<-2.4$. These stars were selected from the LAMOST DR3 low-resolution (R$ \sim$ 2,000) spectroscopic database as metal-poor candidates and followed-up with high-resolution spectroscopy (R$ \sim$110,000) with the LICK/APF. Stellar parameters and individual abundances for 25 chemical elements (from Li to Eu) are presented for the first time. These stars exhibit chemical abundance patterns that are similar to those reported in other literature studies of very and extremely metal-p…
We present the first self-consistent chemodynamical model fitted to reproduce data for the galactic bulge, bar and inner disk. We extend the Made-to-Measure method to an augmented phase-space including the metallicity of stars, and show its first application to the bar region of the Milky Way. Using data from the ARGOS and APOGEE (DR12) surveys, we adapt the recent dynamical model from Portail et al. to reproduce the observed spatial and kinematic variations as a function of metallicity, thus allowing the detailed study of the 3D density distributions, kinematics and orbital structure of stars…
We present a detailed comparison of the Milky Way (MW) globular cluster (GC) kinematics with the 25 Milky Way-mass cosmological simulations from the E-MOSAICS project. While the MW falls within the kinematic distribution of GCs spanned by the simulations, the relative kinematics of its metal-rich ($[\rm{Fe/H}]>-1.2$) versus metal-poor ($[\rm{Fe/H}]<-1.2$), and inner ($r<8\rm{kpc}$) versus outer ($r>8\rm{kpc}$) populations are atypical for its mass. To understand the origins of these features, we perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the simulations, and find 18 correlations describin…
Distances to high mass star forming regions (HMSFRs) in the Milky Way are a crucial constraint on the structure of the Galaxy. Only kinematic distances are available for a majority of the HMSFRs in the Milky Way. Here we compare the kinematic and parallax distances of 75 Galactic HMSFRs to assess the accuracy of kinematic distances. We derive the kinematic distances using three different methods: the traditional method using the Brand & Blitz (1993) rotation curve (Method A), the traditional method using the Reid et al. (2014) rotation curve and updated Solar motion parameters (Method B), and …
The spin of the massive black hole (BH) at the center of the Milky Way, SgrA$^*$, has been poorly constrained so far. We place an upper limit on the spin of SgrA$^*$ based on the spatial distribution of the S-stars, which are arranged in two almost edge-on disks that are located at a position angle approximately $\pm 45^\circ$ with respect to the Galactic plane, on a milliparsec scale around the Galactic Center. Requiring that the frame-dragging precession has not had enough time to make the S-star orbital angular momentum precess, the spin of the massive BH at the center of the Milky Way can …
We present the kinematic results from our ARGOS spectroscopic survey of the Galactic bulge of the Milky Way. Our aim is to understand the formation of the Galactic bulge. We examine the kinematics of about 17,400 stars in the bulge located within 3.5 kpc of the Galactic centre, identified from the 28,000 star ARGOS survey. We aim to determine if the formation of the bulge has been internally driven from disk instabilities as suggested by its boxy shape, or if mergers have played a significant role as expected from Lambda CDM simulations. From our velocity measurements across latitudes b = -5 d…
Here we study the metallicity bias in the velocity dispersions, the derived quantity called anisotropy and the mean azimuthal velocity profiles of the Milky Way stellar halo using Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars taken from SDSS/SEGUE survey. The comparatively metal-rich sample ([Fe/H]>-2) has prograde motion and is found to have an offset of 40 km/s in the mean azimuthal velocity with respect to a metal-poor sample ([Fe/H]<=-2) which has retrograde motion. The difference in rotation between the most metal-poor and most metal-rich population was found to be around 65 km/s. For galactocentric…
Constraints on the Galactic bulge/bar structure and formation history from stellar kinematics and metallicities mainly come from relatively high-latitude fields (|b|>4) where a complex mix of stellar population is seen. We aim here to constrain the formation history of the Galactic bar by studying the radial velocity and metallicity distributions of stars in-situ (|b|<1). We observed red clump stars in four fields along the bar's major axis (l=10,6,-6 and b=0 plus a field at l=0,b=1) with low-resolution spectroscopy from VLT/FLAMES, observing around the CaII triplet. We developed robust method…
In this paper we analyze the kinematics, chemistry, and physical properties of a sample of the most metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs), to uncover their links to modern-day galaxies. We present evidence that the DLA population as a whole exhibits a `knee' in the relative abundances of the alpha-capture and Fe-peak elements when the metallicity is [Fe/H] ~ -2.0, assuming that Zn traces the build-up of Fe-peak elements. In this respect, the chemical evolution of DLAs is clearly different from that experienced by Milky Way halo stars, but resembles that of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in t…
We present the first determination of the radial velocities and metallicities of 78 red giant stars in the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. Observations of the calcium II triplet in these stars were made with FORS2 at the VLT-UT2 in two separated fields of view in WLM, and the [Fe/H] values were conformed to the Carretta & Gratton (1997) metallicity scale. The mean metallicity is <[Fe/H]> = -1.27 +/- 0.04 dex, with a standard deviation of 0.37. We find that the stars in the inner field are more metal rich by [Fe/H] =0.30 +/- 0.06 dex. These results are in agreement with previous photometri…
In this work, we study the chemical compositions and kinematic properties of six metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] $< -2.5$ in the Galactic halo. From high-resolution (R $\sim$~110,000) spectroscopic observations obtained with the Lick/APF, we determined individual abundances for up to 23 elements, to quantitatively evaluate our sample. We identify two carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars (J1630+0953 and J2216+0246) without enhancement in neutron-capture elements (CEMP-no stars), while the rest of our sample stars are carbon-intermediate. By comparing the light-element abundances of the CEMP stars with…

Witnessing a Transformation to Blue-cored Dwarf Early-type Galaxies in Filaments and the Cluster Outskirts: Gas-phase Abundances and Internal Kinematics Perspectives
We present an observational study of small-scale feedback processes operating in the star-forming region located in the wall of the expanding supershell around the Cyg OB1 association. The interstellar gas and dust content and pre-stellar populations in the vicinity of the open star cluster vdB 130 are analysed based on new optical and IR observations performed with the 6-m (3D spectroscopic mapping in the [SII] doublet) and 2.5-m (optical and NIR images) Russian telescopes along with the archival data of Spitzer and Herschel space telescopes. Analysing ionized gas kinematics and emission spec…
