Searching for three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (also known as light/optical bullets) has recently attracted keen theoretical and experimental interests in nonlinear physics. Currently, optical lattices of diverse kinds have been introduced to the stabilization of light bullets, while the investigation for the light bullets of gap type -- nonlinear localized modes within the finite gap of the underlying linear Bloch spectrum -- is lacking. Herein, we address the formation and stabilization properties of such light gap bullets in periodic media with defocusing nonlinearity, theoretically and in numerical ways. The periodic media are based on two-dimensional periodic standing waves created in a coherent three-level atomic system which is driven to the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency, which in principle can also be replaced by photonic crystals in optics or optical lattices in ground-state ultracold atoms system. The temporal dispersion term is tuned to normal (positive) group velocity dispersion so that to launch the light gap bullets under self-repulsive nonlinearity; two types of such light gap bullets constructed as 3D gap solitons and vortices with topological charge m=1 within the first finite gap are reported and found to be robustly stable in the existence domains. On account of the light bullets were previously limited to the semi-infinite gap of periodic media and continuous nonlinear physical systems, the light gap bullets reported here thus supplement the missing type of three-dimensional spatiotemporal localized modes in periodic media which exhibit finite band gaps.
It is studied the bright spatial solitons in nonlocal defocusing Kerr media with parity-time (PT) symmetric potentials. We find that these solitons can exist and be stable over a different range of potential parameters. The influence of the degree of nonlocality on the solitons and the transverse energy flow within the stable solitons are also examined.
We reveal the relevance between the nonlocality and the focusing/defocusing states in nonlocally nonlinear media, and predict a novel phenomenon that the self-focusing/self-defocusing property of the optical beam in the nonlocally nonlinear medium with a sine-oscillation response function depends on its degree of nonlocality. The transition from the focusing nonlinearity to the defocusing nonlinearity of the nonlinear refractive index will happen when the degree of nonlocality of the system goes cross a critical value, and vise verse. Bright and dark soliton solutions are obtained, respectivel…
We investigate Airy-soliton interactions in self-defocusing media with PT potentials in one transverse dimension. We discuss different potentials in which the interacting beams with different phases are launched into the media at different separation distances. During interactions, there exist a primary collision region and a relaxation region accompanied by continuous interaction with the dispersed Airy tail. In the relaxation region, the beams exist soliton-like and breathers-like propagation. The beam width and mean power are influenced by initial separation, phase shift and modulation dept…
The statics and dynamics of a stable, mobile three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal vortex light bullet in a cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with a focusing cubic nonlinearity above a critical value and any defocusing quintic nonlinearity is considered. The present study is based on an analytic variational approximation and a full numerical solution of the 3D nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The 3D vortex bullet can propagate with a constant velocity. Stability of the vortex bullet is established numerically and variationally. The collision between two vortex bullets moving along the angular mome…
We review the properties of nonlinear, multidimensional localized waves whose stationary propagation is sustained by a dynamic equilibrium between self-focusing and nonlinear losses. Their finite-energy versions preserve light bullet behavior well-beyond the characteristic diffraction or dispersion distances, and rebuild after obstacles. There exists a preferential lossy light bullet with maximum intensity and losses, defined solely by the optical properties of the medium, which is the most stable, non-conical localized wave supported by a medium with self-focusing nonlinearity and nonlinear l…
In this paper, we carry out a theoretical investigation on the propagation of spatio-temporal solitons (light bullets) in the nonlinear metamaterial waveguides. Our theoretical study is based on the formulation of Lagrangian variational analysis with a suitable ansatz followed by a split-step Fourier method in confirming the outcomes former numerically. A particular emphasis is given to obtain the conditions on the system parameters for stable dynamics in negative as well as positive index regimes of metamaterial waveguides. Similar to the conventional medium, the three-dimensional (3D) light …
We present a detailed experimental investigation, which uncovers the nature of light bullets generated from self-focusing in a bulk dielectric medium with Kerr nonlinearity in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime. By high dynamic range measurements of three-dimensional intensity profiles, we demonstrate that the light bullets consist of a sharply localized high-intensity core, which carries the self-compressed pulse and contains approximately 25% of the total energy, and a ring-shaped spatiotemporal periphery. Sub-diffractive propagation along with dispersive broadening of the light …
We propose a scheme to produce ultraslow (3+1)-dimensional helical optical solitons, alias helical optical bullets, in a resonant three-level $Λ$-type atomic system via quantum coherence. We show that, due to the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency, the helical optical bullets can propagate with an ultraslow velocity up to $10^{-5}$ $c$ ($c$ is the light speed in vacuum) in longitudinal direction and a slow rotational motion (with velocity $10^{-7}$ $c$) in transverse directions. The generation power of such optical bullets can be lowered to microwatt, and their stability can be…
We consider the statics and dynamics of a stable, mobile three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal light bullet in a cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with a focusing cubic nonlinearity above a critical value and any defocusing quintic nonlinearity. The 3D light bullet can propagate with a constant velocity in any direction. Stability of the light bullet under a small perturbation is established numerically. We consider frontal collision between two light bullets with different relative velocities. At large velocities the collision is elastic with the bullets emerge after collision with practically no…
We predict that the interface of materials with defocusing thermal nonlinearities support stable fundamental and higher-order surface waves when the opposite edges of the medium are maintained at different temperatures. Such surface waves exist due to the interplay between repulsion from the interface and the defocusing thermal nonlinearity that deflect light beams from the bulk of the medium toward its edges.
We demonstrate that spatially inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinear landscapes with the nonlinearity coefficient growing toward the periphery as [1+abs(r)]**a support one- and two-dimensional fundamental and higher-order bright solitons, as well as vortex solitons, with algebraically decaying tails. The energy flow of the solitons converges as long as nonlinearity growth rate exceeds the dimensionality, i.e., a>D. Fundamental solitons are always stable, while multipoles and vortices are stable if the nonlinearity growth rate is large enough.
We introduce a three-dimensional (3D) model of optical media with the quadratic ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity and an effective 2D isotropic harmonic-oscillator (HO) potential. While it is well known that 3D χ^2 solitons with embedded vorticity ("vortical light bullets") are unstable in the free space, we demonstrate that they have a broad stability region in the present model, being supported by the HO potential against the splitting instability. The shape of the vortical solitons may be accurately predicted by the variational approximation (VA). They exist above a threshold value of the total ener…
We show that media with inhomogeneous defocusing cubic nonlinearity growing toward the periphery can support a variety of stable vortex clusters nested in a common localized envelope. Nonrotating symmetric clusters are built of an even number of vortices with opposite topological charges, located at equal distances from the origin. Rotation makes the clusters strongly asymmetric, as the centrifugal force shifts some vortices to the periphery, while others approach the origin, depending on the topological charge. We obtain such asymmetric clusters as stationary states in the rotating coordinate…
We address the concept of three-dimensional light bullet formation in structures where nonlinearity and dispersion are contributed by different materials, including metamaterials, which are used at their best to create suitable conditions where bullets can form. The particular geometry considered here consists of alternating rings made of highly dispersive but weakly nonlinear media and strongly nonlinear but weakly dispersive media. We show that light bullets form for a wide range of parameters.
We report results for solitons in models of waveguides with focusing or defocusing saturable nonlinearity and a parity-time(PT )-symmetric complex-valued external potential of the Scarf-II type. The model applies to the nonlinear wave propagation in graded-index optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We find both fundamental and multipole solitons for both focusing and defocusing signs of the saturable nonlinearity in such PT -symmetric waveguides. The dependence of the propagation constant on the soliton's power is presented for different strengths of the nonlinearity saturation, S. …
By using a reductive perturbation technique applied to a two-level model, this study puts forward a generic two-dimensional sine-Gordon evolution equation governing the propagation of femtosecond spatiotemporal optical solitons in Kerr media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximation. Direct numerical simulations show that, in contrast to the long-wave approximation, no collapse occurs, and that robust (2+1)-dimensional ultrashort light bullets may form from adequately chosen few-cycle input spatiotemporal wave forms. In contrast to the case of quadratic nonlinearity, the light bullets o…
We predict the existence of surface dark solitons at the interface between a self-defocusing nonlocal nonlinear medium and a linear medium. The fundamental and higher-order surface dark solitons can exist when the linear refractive index of the self-defocusing media is much larger than that of the linear media. The fundamental solitons are stable and the stabilities of higher-order solitons depend on both nonlocality degree and propagation constant.
We introduce a new form of stable spatio-temporal self-trapped optical packets stemming from the interplay of local and nonlocal nonlinearities. Pulsed self-trapped light beams in media with both electronic and molecular nonlinear responses are addressed to prove that spatial and temporal effects can be decoupled, allowing for independent tuning. We numerically demonstrate that (3+1)D light bullets and anti-bullets, i. e. bright and dark temporal solitons embedded in stable (2+1)D nonlocal spatial solitons, can be generated in reorientational media under experimentally feasible conditions.
The stability of two-dimensional bright vortex solitons in a media with focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities is investigated analytically and numerically. It is proved that above some critical beam powers not only one- and two-charged but also multiple-charged stable vortex solitons do exist. A vortex soliton occurs robust with respect to symmetry-breaking modulational instability in the self-defocusing regime provided that its radial profile becomes flattened, so that a self-trapped wave beam gets a pronounced surface. It is demonstrated that the dynamics of a slightly perturb…
We address the existence and properties of solitons in layered thermal media made of alternating focusing and defocusing layers. Such structures support robust bright solitons even if the averaged nonlinearity is defocusing. We show that non-oscillating solitons may form in any of the focusing domains, even in those located close to the sample edge, in contrast to uniform thermal media where light beams always oscillate when not launched exactly on the sample center. Stable multipole solitons may include more than four spots in layered media.
We address ring-shaped surface waves supported by defocusing thermal media with circular cross-section. Such waves exist because of the balance between repulsion from the interface and deflection of light from the bulk medium due to defocusing nonlocal nonlinearity. The properties of such surface waves are determined by the geometry of the sample. Nodeless ring surface waves are stable for all values of their winding number, while surface waves with a small number of azimuthal nodes can be metastable.
We demonstrate the existence of breathing dissipative light bullets in a birefringent optical resonator filled with Kerr media. The propagation of light inside the cavity for each polarized component, which is coupled by cross-phase modulation, is described by the coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. The space-time dynamics of breathing light bullets are described using Stokes parameters and frequency spectra.
We present a unified theoretical study of the bright solitons governed by self-focusing and defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with generalized parity-time (PT)-symmetric Scarff II potentials. Particularly, a PT-symmetric k-wavenumber Scarff II potential and a multi-well Scarff II potential are considered, respectively. For the k-wavenumber Scarff II potential, the parameter space can be divided into different regions, corresponding to unbroken and broken PT-symmetry and the bright solitons for self-focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinearities. For the multi-well Scarff II potenti…
We investigate the formation of collisionless shocks along the spatial profile of a gaussian laser beam propagating in nonlocal nonlinear media. For defocusing nonlinearity the shock survives the smoothing effect of the nonlocal response, though its dynamics is qualitatively affected by the latter, whereas for focusing nonlinearity it dominates over filamentation. The patterns observed in a thermal defocusing medium are interpreted in the framework of our theory.
We demonstrate a possibility to stabilize three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons ("light bullets") in self--focusing Kerr media by means of a combination of dispersion management in the longitudinal direction (with the group-velocity dispersion alternating between positive and negative values) and periodic modulation of the refractive index in one transverse direction, out of the two. The analysis is based on the variational approximation (results of direct three-dimensional simulations will be reported in a follow-up work). A predicted stability area is identified in the model's parameter …

It has been recently demonstrated that self-defocusing (SDF) media with the cubic nonlinearity, whose local coefficient grows from the center to periphery fast enough, support stable bright solitons, without the use of any linear potential. Our objective is to test the genericity of this mechanism for other nonlinearities, by applying it to one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) quintic SDF media. The models may be implemented in optics (in particular, in colloidal suspensions of nanoparticles), and the 1D model may be applied to the description of the Tonks-Girardeau gas of ultracold bosons. In…
We introduce a new species of gap solitons (GSs) supported by an azimuthally modulated guiding ring in defocusing cubic media. The periodicity in the azimuthal direction strongly modifies properties and existence domains of GSs. In addition to the fundamental solitons, we report even and twisted bound states. The former type is found to be stable, while the twisted states are always unstable in defocusing media.
The effect of focusing and defocusing nonlinearities on Anderson localization in highly nonlocal media is theoretically and numerically investigated. A perturbative approach is developed to solve the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation in the presence of a random potential, showing that nonlocality stabilizes Anderson states.
A quantum theory of 3D X-shaped optical bullets in Kerr media is presented. The existence of progressive undistorted squeezed vacuum is predicted. Applications to quantum non-demolition experiments, entanglement and interferometers for gravitational waves detection are envisaged.
Recent studies have demonstrated that defocusing cubic nonlinearity with local strength growing from the center to the periphery faster than $r^{D}$, in space of dimension $D$ with radial coordinate $r$, supports a vast variety of robust bright solitons. In the framework of the same model, but with a weaker spatial-growth rate, $\sim r^{α}$ with $α\leq D$, we here test the possibility to create stable\textit{\ localized continuous waves} (LCWs) in one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) geometries, \textit{% localized dark solitons} (LDSs) in 1D, and \textit{localized dark vortices} (LDVs) in 2D,…
Multimode optical fibers has emerged as the platform that will bridge the gap between nonlinear optics in bulk media and in single-mode fibers. However, the understanding of the transition between these two research fields still remains incomplete despite numerous investigations of intermodal nonlinear phenomena and spatiotemporal coupling. Some of the striking phenomena observed in bulk media with ultrashort and ultra-intense pulses (i.e., conical emission, harmonic generation and light bullets) require a deeper insight to be possibly unveiled in multimode fibers. Here we generalize the conce…
Criteria for experimental observation of multi-dimensional optical solitons in media with saturable refractive nonlinearities are developed. The criteria are applied to actual material parameters (characterizing the cubic self-focusing and quintic self-defocusing nonlinearities, two-photon loss, and optical-damage threshold) for various glasses. This way, we identify operation windows for soliton formation in these glasses. It is found that two-photon absorption sets stringent limits on the windows. We conclude that, while a well-defined window of parameters exists for two-dimensional solitons…
We review the latest progress and properties of the families of bright and dark one-dimensional periodic waves propagating in saturable Kerr-type and quadratic nonlinear media. We show how saturation of the nonlinear response results in appearance of stability (instability) bands in focusing (defocusing) medium, which is in sharp contrast with the properties of periodic waves in Kerr media. One of the key results discovered is the stabilization of multicolor periodic waves in quadratic media. In particular, dark-type waves are shown to be metastable, while bright-type waves are completely stab…

We show that a high-order Bessel beam propagating in a medium with nonlinear absorption is not completely absorbed, but survives in the form of a new propagation invariant vortex beam in which the beam energy and orbital angular momentum are permanently transferred to matter and at the same time refueled by spiral inward currents of energy and angular momentum. Unlike vortex solitons and dissipative vortex solitons, these vortex beams are not supported by specific dispersive nonlinearities (self-focusing or self-defocusing) and do not require gain. Propagation invariance in presence of multipl…
Exploiting the fact that light propagation in defocusing nonlinear media can mimic the transonic flow of an equivalent fluid, we demonstrate experimentally the formation of an all-optical event horizon in a waveguide structure akin to a hydrodynamic Laval nozzle. The analogue event horizon, which forms at the nozzle throat is suggested as a novel platform for analogous gravity experiments.
We analyze the existence, stability, and mobility of gap solitons (GSs) in a periodic photonic structure built into a nonlocal self-defocusing medium. Counter-intuitively, the GSs are supported even by a highly nonlocal nonlinearity, which makes the system quasi-linear. Unlike local models, the variational approximation (VA) predicts the GSs in a good agreement with numerical findings, due to the suppression of undulating tails of the solitons.
"Light bullets" are multi-dimensional solitons which are localized in both space and time. We show that such solitons exist in two- and three-dimensional self-induced-transparency media and that they are fully stable. Our approximate analytical calculation, backed and verified by direct numerical simulations, yields the multi-dimensional generalization of the one-dimensional Sine-Gordon soliton.
The properties of optical solitons in periodic nonlinear media are reviewed. The emphasis is on solitons in periodically refractive media (Bragg gratings) incorporating a periodic set of thin layers of two-level systems resonantly interacting with the field. Such media support a variety of bright and dark `gap solitons' propagating in the band gaps of the Bragg gratings, as well as their multi - dimensional analogs (light bullets). These novel gap solitons differ substantially from their counterparts in periodic media with either cubic or quadratic off-resonant nonlinearities.
We study dynamical reshaping of polychromatic beams due to collective nonlinear self-action of multiple-frequency components in periodic photonic lattices and predict the formation of polychromatic discrete solitons facilitated by localization of light in spectral gaps. We show that the self-trapping efficiency and structure of emerging polychromatic gap solitons depends on the spectrum of input beams due to the lattice-enhanced dispersion, including the effect of crossover from localization to diffraction in media with defocusing nonlinearity.
Stable ring vortex solitons, featuring a bright-shape, appear to be very rare in nature. However, here we show that they exist and can be made dynamically stable in defocusing cubic nonlinear media with an imprinted Bessel optical lattice. We find the families of vortex lattice solitons and reveal their salient properties, including the conditions required for their stability. We show that the higher the soliton topological charge, the deeper the lattice modulation necessary for stabilization.
We show that periodic optical lattices imprinted in cubic nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption and localized linear gain landscapes support stable dissipative defect modes in both focusing and defocusing media. Their shapes and transverse extent are determined by the propagation constant that belongs to a gap of the lattice spectrum which, in turn, is determined by the relation between gain and losses. One-hump and two-hump dissipative defect modes are obtained.
We study generation of two-dimensional dispersive shock waves and oblique dark solitons upon interaction of tilted plane waves with negative refractive index defects embedded into defocusing material with linear gain and two-photon absorption. Different evolution regimes are encountered including the formation of well-localized disturbances for input tilts below critical one, and generation of extended shock waves containing multiple intensity oscillations in the "upstream" region and gradually vanishing oblique dark solitons in "downstream" region for input tilts exceeding critical one. The g…
We present a theoretical study of plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) formed in two-dimensional (2D) arrays of metallic nanowires embedded into a nonlinear medium with Kerr nonlinearity. We analyze two classes of 2D PLSs families, namely, fundamental and vortical PLSs in both focusing and defocusing media. Their existence, stability, and subwavelength spatial confinement are studied in detail.
We study the propagation of light beams through optical media with competing nonlocal nonlinearities. We demonstrate that the nonlocality of competing focusing and defocusing nonlinearities gives rise to self-organization and stationary states with stable hexagonal intensity patterns, akin to transverse crystals of light filaments. Signatures of this long-range ordering are shown to be observable in the propagation of light in optical waveguides and even in free space. We consider a specific form of the nonlinear response that arises in atomic vapor upon proper light coupling. Yet, the general…
Vortex solitons (dark solitons) are described in self-defocusing Kerr media whose phase line singularity is not parallel to the propagation direction, but is perpendicular or tilted almost arbitrary angles, depending on the medium linear dispersion. These solitons broaden the so-called spatiotemporal optical vortices recently observed in experiments to the nonlinear realm, opening new perspectives in practical applications of optical vortices.
We analyze theoretically the Schrodinger-Poisson equation in two transverse dimensions in the presence of a Kerr term. The model describes the nonlinear propagation of optical beams in thermooptical media and can be regarded as an analogue system for a self-gravitating self-interacting wave. We compute numerically the family of radially symmetric ground state bright stationary solutions for focusing and defocusing local nonlinearity, keeping in both cases a focusing nonlocal nonlinearity. We also analyze excited states and oscillations induced by fixing the temperature at the borders of the ma…
The existence and stability of the nonlinear spatial localized modes are investigated in parity-time symmetric optical media characterized by a generic complex hyperbolic refractive index distribution with competing gain and loss profile. The exact analytical expressions of the localized modes are found for all values of the competing parameter and in the presence of both the self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. The effect of competing gain/loss profile on the stability structure of these localized modes are discussed with the help of linear stability analysis followed by the d…
We address light propagation in Vogel optical lattices and show that such lattices support a variety of stable soliton solutions in both self-focusing and self-defocusing media, whose propagation constants belong to domains resembling gaps in the spectrum of a truly periodic lattice. The azimuthally-rich structure of Vogel lattices allows generation of spiraling soliton motion.
We address shock waves generated upon the interaction of tilted plane waves with negative refractive index defect in defocusing media with linear gain and two-photon absorption. We found that in contrast to conservative media where one-dimensional dispersive shock waves usually exist only as nonstationary objects expanding away from defect or generating beam, the competition between gain and two-photon absorption in dissipative medium results in the formation of localized stationary dispersive shock waves, whose transverse extent may considerably exceed that of the refractive index defect. One…
We predict theoretically that surface of an optical lattice imprinted in defocusing nonlinear media can support shock, or kink waves. Such new surface waves contain a modulationally stable pedestal and are strongly localized at the edge of the optical lattice due to Bragg-type reflection. The kink steepness and localization degree can be controlled by the lattice depth. We found two types of kinks, which exhibit distinct stability properties for each finite gap in the lattice spectrum. Our findings open the way to experimental observation of optical surface kink waves.
We introduce a general approach for generation of sets of three-dimensional quasi-non-spreading wavepackets propagating in linear media, also referred to as linear light bullets. The spectrum of rigorously non-spreading wavepackets in media with anomalous group velocity dispersion is localized on the surface of a sphere, thus drastically restricting the possible wavepacket shapes. However, broadening slightly the spectrum affords the generation of a large variety of quasi-non-spreading distributions featuring complex topologies and shapes in space and time that are of interest in different are…
Solitary waves bifurcated from edges of Bloch bands in two-dimensional periodic media are determined both analytically and numerically in the context of a two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential. Using multi-scale perturbation methods, envelope equations of solitary waves near Bloch bands are analytically derived. These envelope equations reveal that solitary waves can bifurcate from edges of Bloch bands under either focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, depending on the signs of second-order dispersion coefficients at the edge points. Interestingly, at edge poi…
