Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) media have been very actively investigated due to their unconventional wave phenomena and strengthened nonlinear response. However, the technological impact of ENZ media will be determined by the quality of realistic ENZ materials, including material loss and surface roughness. Here, we provide a comprehensive experimental study of the impact of surface roughness on ENZ substrates. Using silicon carbide (SiC) substrates with artificially induced roughness, we analyze samples whose roughness ranges from a few to hundreds of nanometer size-scales. It is concluded that ENZ substrates with roughness in the few nanometer scale are negatively affected by coupling to longitudinal phonons and strong ENZ fields normal to the surface. On the other hand, when the roughness is in the hundreds of nanometer scale, the ENZ band is found to be more robust than dielectric and surface phonon polariton (SPhP) bands.
Metallic layers are known to be used for the suppression of wave transmission when their thickness is sufficiently higher than the skin depth of metal. If in addition to blocking the transmission, metallic layers have the feature of blocking the reflection, too, they would make perfect absorbers. In this work, we propose an experimental approach of using a single thin layer of Manganese (Mn) as both the transmission suppresser and the reflection suppresser. This approach leads to obtaining lithography-free ultra-broadband perfect absorption in an ultra-wide spectrum ranging from Ultraviolet (U…
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) present high second-order optical nonlinearity, which is extremely desirable for, e.g., frequency conversion in nonlinear photonic devices. On the other hand, the atomic thickness of 2D materials naturally leads to low frequency converted intensities, highlighting the importance to design structures that enhance the nonlinear response for practical applications. A number of methods to increase the pump electric field at the 2D material has been reported, relying on complex plasmonic and/or metasurface structures. Here, we take advantage of the…
Graphene plasmons have attracted significant attention due to their tunability, potentially long propagation lengths and ultracompact wavelengths. However, the latter characteristic imposes challenges to light-plasmon coupling in practical applications, generally requiring sophisticated coupling setups, extremely high doping levels and/or graphene nanostructuting close to the resolution limit of current lithography techniques. Here, we propose and theoretically demonstrate a method for alleviating such a technological strain through the use of a practical substrate whose low and negative diele…
We describe a micro-fabrication method to create concave features with ultra-low surface roughness in silica, either on the end facets of optical fibers or on flat substrates. The machining uses a single focused CO2 laser pulse. Parameters are chosen such that material is removed by thermal evaporation while simultaneously producing excellent surface quality by surface tension-induced movement in a low-viscosity melt layer. A surface roughness σ~0.2nm is regularly obtained. The concave depressions are near-spherical close to the center with radii of curvature between 20 and 2000μm. The method …
In "Modeling and observation of mid-infrared nonlocality in effective epsilon-near-zero ultranarrow coaxial apertures" the authors perform infrared transmission measurements on coaxial aperture arrays in metal films. They claim that the blue-shift of the resonances is the result of nonlocality. They claim that roughness will not produce a shift. This is contrary to past results in plasmonics, to our simulations and to past published claims from some of the same authors. Furthermore, the effect of planarization that occurs for atomic layer deposition, as has been reported elsewhere, will produc…
Epsilon near zero modes offer extreme field enhancement that can be utilized for developing enhanced sensing schemes. However, demonstrations of enhanced spectroscopies have largely exploited surface polaritons, mostly due to the challenges of coupling a vibrational transition to volume-confined epsilon near zero modes. Here we fabricate high aspect ratio gratings (up to 24.8 um height with greater than 5 μm pitch) of 4H-SiC, with resonant modes that couple to transverse magnetic and transverse electric incident fields. These correspond to metal-insulator-metal waveguide modes propagating down…
We report the first observation of epsilon near zero (ENZ) phonon polaritons in an ultrathin AlN film fully hybridized with surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) supported by the adjacent SiC substrate. Employing a strong coupling model for the analysis of the dispersion and electric field distribution in these hybridized modes, we show that they share the most prominent features of the two precursor modes. The novel ENZ-SPhP coupled polaritons with a highly propagative character and deeply sub-wavelength light confinement can be utilized as building blocks for future infrared and terahertz (THz) n…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, including artificial metamaterials, have been advanced to mold laser beams and antenna-mediated radiated waves. Here we propose an efficient method to control Ohmic losses inherent to natural ENZ materials by the assembly of subwavelength structures in a nonperiodic matrix constituting an ENZ metacoating. Implemented over plano-concave transparent substrates whose radius can be of only a few wavelengths, ENZ surface-relief elements demonstrate to adequately shape a plane wave into highly localized fields. Furthermore, our proposal provides an energy efficienc…
We report a theoretical analysis of total absorption conditions in a structure consisting of a lossy coating layer on top of a specular metal substrate, which is known as a Dallenbach absorber. All possible combinations of complex refractive indices of the coating material and thicknesses of the coating layer providing complete absorption are described for the case of normal incidence of a plane wave. The work of coatings based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials is analyzed in detail. Simple analytical relations are obtained for the conditions of total absorption. It is shown that the range …
We experimentally demonstrate efficient third harmonic generation from an indium tin oxide (ITO) nanofilm (lambda/42 thick) on a glass substrate for a pump wavelength of 1.4 um. A conversion efficiency of 3.3x10^-6 is achieved by exploiting the field enhancement properties of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode with an enhancement factor of 200. This nanoscale frequency conversion method is applicable to other plasmonic materials and reststrahlen materials in proximity of the longitudinal optical phonon frequencies.
In this article, we demonstrate experimentally and verified numerically the excitation of Berreman modes that propagate in a dielectric film of uniaxial anisotropic nanoporous alumina grown on an aluminium substrate. It is an air-dielectric-metal asymmetric polaritonic system with a real part of the effective permittivity having a value near zero. The modes are excited at a wavelength lower than the epsilon near zero wavelength region. Minimum reflection is observed for the mid-infrared p-polarized light, while maximum reflection is observed for the s-polarized light. The experimental results …
All-optical active plasmonic devices are of fundamental importance for designing efficient nanophotonic circuits. We theoretically propose and numerically investigate an active plasmonic device made up of a nonlinear epsilon-near-zero metamaterial slab of thickness smaller than 100 nanometers lying on a linear epsilon-near-zero metamaterial substrate. We predict that, in free-space coupling configuration, the device, operating at low-intensity, would display plasmon mediated hysteresis behavior since the phase difference between the reflected and the incident optical waves turns out to be mult…
Miniature concave hollows, made by wet etching silicon through a circular mask, can be used as mirror substrates for building optical micro-cavities on a chip. In this paper we investigate how ICP polishing improves both shape and roughness of the mirror substrates. We characterise the evolution of the surfaces during the ICP polishing using white-light optical profilometry and atomic force microscopy. A surface roughness of 1 nm is reached, which reduces to 0.5 nm after coating with a high reflectivity dielectric. With such smooth mirrors, the optical cavity finesse is now limited by the shap…
Fully reconfigurable metasurfaces would enable new classes of optical devices that provide unprecedented control of electromagnetic beamforms. The principal challenge for achieving reconfigurability is the need to generate large tunability of subwavelength, low-Q metasurface resonators. Here, we demonstrate large refractive index tuning can be efficiently facilitated at mid-infrared wavelengths using novel temperature-dependent control over free-carrier refraction. In doped InSb we demonstrate nearly two-fold increase in the electron effective mass leading to a positive refractive index shift …
Optomechanics deals with the control and applications of mechanical effects of light that stems from the redistribution of photon momenta in light scattering. Here, we investigate, analytically and numerically, optical forces on polarizable particles in proximity of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials. We look at the general features of the repulsive-attractive optomechanics from the nano to the microscale exploiting different theoretical methods (dipole approximation, finite elements calculations, transition (T-)matrix). We discuss the role of realistic layered materials, as our ENZ substra…
In this paper we theoretically demonstrate the tunability of the Casimir force both in sign and magnitude between parallel plates coated with dispersive materials. We show that this force, existing between uncharged plates, can be tuned by carefully choosing the value of the plasma frequency (i.e., the epsilon-near-zero frequency) of the coating in the neighborhood of the resonance frequency of the cavity. The coating layer enables a continuous variation of the force between four limiting values when a coating is placed on each plate. We explore the consequences of such variation when pairs of…
Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) are fabricated directly on diamond substrates and their optical and electrical properties are characterized. Dark count performance and photon count rates are measured at varying temperatures for 1310nm and 632nm photons. The procedure to prepare diamond substrate surfaces suitable for the deposition and patterning of thin film superconducting layers is reported. Using this approach, diamond substrates with less than 300pm RMS surface roughness are obtained.
We theoretically study the electromagnetic response of type-I and type-II centrosymmetric Weyl semimetals. We derive an anisotropic permittivity tensor with off-diagonal elements to describe such gyrotropic media. Our findings reveal that for appropriate Weyl cones tilts, the real part of the transverse component of the permittivity can exhibit an epsilon-near-zero response. The tilt parameter can also control the amount of loss in the medium, ranging from lossless to dissipative when transitioning from type-I to type-II. Similarly, by tuning either the frequency of the electromagnetic field o…
In this letter, a plasmonic dark field microscopy taking advantages of the polymer loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (PLSPPW) is experimentally demonstrated. The dye molecules (Rhodamine 6G, Rh6G) are doped in the PLSPPW to launch the plasmonic waves or guided waves. Due to the localized property of these waves, the near-field optical energy on the surface of PLSPPW can be scattered into the far-field only in the presence of the objects. The scattering signals then form the dark-field image of the objects. The proposed technique just utilizes a chip-scale integrated plasmonic multilay…
We report that flat substrates such as glass coverslips with surface roughness well below 0.5 nm feature notable speckle patterns when observed with high-sensitivity interference microscopy. We uncover that these speckle patterns unambiguously originate from the subnanometer surface undulations, and develop an intuitive model to illustrate how subnanometer non-resonant dielectric features could generate pronounced interference contrast in the far field. We introduce the concept of optical fingerprint for the deterministic speckle pattern associated with a particular substrate surface area and …
Radiative thermal engineering with subwavelength metallic bodies is a key element for heat and energy management applications, communication and sensing. Here, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate metallic thermal emitters with narrowband but extremely stable emission spectra, whose resonant frequency does not shift with changes on the nanofilm thickness, the angle of observation and/or polarization. Our devices are based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) substrates acting as material-based high-impedance substrates. They do not require from complex nanofabrication processes, thus being comp…
