Epsilon near zero modes offer extreme field enhancement that can be utilized for developing enhanced sensing schemes. However, demonstrations of enhanced spectroscopies have largely exploited surface polaritons, mostly due to the challenges of coupling a vibrational transition to volume-confined epsilon near zero modes. Here we fabricate high aspect ratio gratings (up to 24.8 um height with greater than 5 μm pitch) of 4H-SiC, with resonant modes that couple to transverse magnetic and transverse electric incident fields. These correspond to metal-insulator-metal waveguide modes propagating downwards into the substrate. The cavity formed by the finite length of the waveguide allows for strong absorption of incident infrared light (>80%) with Q factors in excess of 90, including an epsilon near zero waveguide mode with εeff=0.0574+0.008i. The localization of the electromagnetic fields within the gap between the grating teeth suggests an opportunity to realize a new platform for studying vibrational coupling in liquid environments, with potential opportunities for enhanced spectroscopies. We show that these modes are supported in anhydrous and aqueous environments, and that high aspect ratio gratings coherently couple to the vibrational transition in the surrounding liquid.
The rapidly growing global data usage has demanded more efficient ways to utilize the scarce electromagnetic spectrum resource. Recent research has focused on the development of efficient multiplexing techniques in the millimeter-wave band (1-10 mm, or 30-300 GHz) due to the promise of large available bandwidth for future wireless networks. Frequency-division multiplexing is still one of the most commonly-used techniques to maximize the transmission capacity of a wireless network. Based on the frequency-selective tunnelling effect of the low-loss epsilon-near-zero metamaterial waveguide, we nu…
We present an electro-optic modulator exploiting an array of Vanadium dioxide nanorods operating in the epsilon near regime as the active switching material integrated in a silicon waveguide. The modulator takes advantage of the insulator-to-metal transition of Vanadium dioxide to achieve a robust modulation depth of 19.7 dB/micron with a broad wavelength of operation. Using simulations, we demonstrate how the effective permittivity of the metamaterial can be tuned to a near-zero value by varying the nanorod geometry. The paper also proposes a novel hexagonal array design which achieves low in…
We report a resonant enhancement of luminescence intensity from an ensemble of CdS/ZnS quantum dots embedded in a nanoscale rectangular photonic waveguide operating at the epsilon-near-zero regime.
We study metamaterials with an anisotropic effective permittivity tensor in which one component is near zero. We find that such an anisotropic metamaterial can be used to control wave propagation and construct almost perfect bending waveguides with a high transmission rate (>95%). This interesting effect originates in the power flow redistribution by the surface waves on the input and output interfaces, which smoothly matches with the propagating modes inside the metamaterial waveguide. We also find that waves in such anisotropic epsilon-near-zero materials can be reflected by small-sized perf…
We demonstrate a way to coherently control light at the nanoscale and achieve coherent perfect absorption (CPA) by using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The presented waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, combined with strong and homogeneous field enhancement along their nanochannels. The CPA conditions are perfectly satisfied at the ENZ frequency, surprisingly by a subwavelength plasmonic structure, resulting in strong CPA under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with appropriate amplitudes and phases. In addition , we inve…
Anomalous optical coupling properties between two silicon wires in a silicon slot waveguide embedded in epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials are proposed and demonstrated. The dependences of optical field enhancement in the slot region and transverse optical force on the slot size and the permittivity of surrounding material are studied in details. It is demonstrated that the optical field in the slot region is significantly enhanced due to the giant index contrast at the slot interface between silicon wires and ENZ metamaterials, but the optical mode coupling between silicon wires is greatly…
We propose a scheme to realize nonlinear coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at the nanoscale using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The general conditions to achieve CPA in a linear ENZ plasmonic waveguide are analyzed and presented. The proposed ENZ waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, where the CPA effect occurs under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with equal amplitudes and appropriate phase distributions. In addition, the strong and uniform field enhancement inside the nanochannels of the waveguides at the ENZ resonanc…
Bulk materials possessing a relative electric permittivity $\varepsilon$ close to zero exhibit giant Kerr nonlinearities. However, harnessing this response in guided-wave geometries is not straightforward, due to the extreme and counter-intuitive properties of epsilon-near-zero materials. Here we investigate, through rigorous calculations of the Kerr nonlinear coefficient, how the remarkable nonlinear properties of such materials can be exploited in several different types of structures, including bulk films, plasmonic nanowires, and metal nanoapertures. We find the largest Kerr nonlinear resp…
In this work, we investigate wave transmission through an epsilon-near-zero metamaterial waveguide embedded with defects. We show that by adjusting the geometric sizes and material properties of the defects, total reflection and even transmission can be obtained, despite the impedance mismatch of epsilon-near-zero material with free space. Our work can greatly simplify the design of zero-index material waveguide applications by removing the dependence on permeability.
Preservation of the entangled state of a quantum system is relevant in quantum applications. However, the preservation of entangled states is constrained due to the energy dissipation of the quantum system arising from the environment. As a result, the design of the environment seen by quantum bits is relevant due to its relation to the final state of the quantum system. This work presents the concurrence measure of entanglement between two qubits coupled to a rolled-up epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) waveguide reservoir consisting of an alternating layer of metal and dielectric. Our numerical calcula…
We study theoretically two vibrating quantum emitters trapped near a one-dimensional waveguide and interacting with propagating photons. We demonstrate, that in the regime of strong optomechanical interaction the light-induced coupling of emitter vibrations can lead to formation of spatially localized vibration modes, exhibiting parity-time (PT ) symmetry breaking. These localized vibrations can be interpreted as topological defects in the quasiclassical energy spectrum.
Vibrational ultrastrong coupling (USC), where the light-matter coupling strength is comparable to the vibrational frequency of molecules, presents new opportunities to probe the interactions of molecules with zero-point fluctuations, harness cavity-enhanced chemical reactions, and develop novel devices in the mid-infrared regime. Here we use epsilon-near-zero nanocavities filled with a model polar medium (SiO$_2$) to demonstrate USC between phonons and gap plasmons. We present classical and quantum mechanical models to quantitatively describe the observed plasmon-phonon USC phenomena and demon…
We present a nanoscale active plasmonic waveguide system consisting of an array of periodic slits that can exhibit exceptional points and spectral singularities leading to several novel functionalities. The proposed symmetric active system operates near its cut-off wavelength and behaves as an effective epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium. We demonstrate the formation of an exceptional point (EP) that is accessed with very low gain coefficient values, a unique feature of the proposed nanoscale symmetric plasmonic configuration. Reflectionless ENZ transmission and perfect loss-compensation are reali…
Multiqubit entanglement is extremely important to perform truly secure quantum optical communication and computing operations. However, the efficient generation of long-range entanglement over extended time periods between multiple qubits randomly distributed in a photonic system remains an outstanding challenge. This constraint is mainly due to the detrimental effects of decoherence and dephasing. To alleviate this issue, we present engineered epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanostructures that can maximize the coherence of light-matter interactions at room temperature. We investigate a practical ENZ…
The field effect in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors plays a key role in field-effect transistors (FETs), which are the fundamental building blocks of modern digital integrated circuits. Recent works show that the field effect can also be used to make optical/plasmonic modulators. In this paper, we report field effect electro-absorption modulators (FEOMs) each made of an ultrathin epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) film, as the active material, sandwiched in a silicon or plasmonic waveguide. Without a bias, the ENZ film maximizes the attenuation of the waveguides and the modulators work at the …
We report a novel optical waveguide design of a hollow step index fiber modified with a thin layer of indium tin oxide (ITO). We show an excitation of highly confined waveguide mode in the proposed fiber near the wavelength where permittivity of ITO approaches zero. Due to the high field confinement within thin ITO shell inside the fiber, the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode can be characterized by a peak in modal loss of the hybrid waveguide. Our results show that such in-fiber excitation of ENZ mode is due to the coupling of the guided core mode to the thin-film ENZ mode. We also show that the p…
The entanglement and resonance energy transfer between two-level quantum emitters are typically limited to sub-wavelength distances due to the inherently short-range nature of the dipole-dipole interactions. Moreover, the entanglement of quantum systems is hard to preserve for a long time period due to decoherence and dephasing mainly caused by radiative and nonradiative losses. In this work, we outperform the aforementioned limitations by presenting efficient long-range inter-emitter entanglement and large enhancement of resonance energy transfer between two optical qubits mediated by epsilon…
We suggest a principle for isolation of circularly polarized waves in magnetically active extreme-parameter metamaterials. Using theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we show that metamaterials with extreme parameters, such as epsilon-near-zero materials (ENZ), when merged with magneto-optical materials, become transparent for forward circularly polarized waves of a given handedness and opaque for backward propagating waves of the same handedness. We theoretically study two possible implementations of such hybrid materials: (1) the case of metal-dielectric stacks; and (2) rectangular…
The epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) tunneling phenomenon allows full transmission of waves through a narrow channel even in the presence of a strong geometric mismatch. Here we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear control of the ENZ tunneling by an external field, as well as self-modulation of the transmission resonance due to the incident wave. Using a waveguide section near cut-off frequency as the ENZ system, we introduce a diode with tunable and nonlinear capacitance to demonstrate both of these effects. Our results confirm earlier theoretical ideas on using an ENZ channel for dielectric sensing, …
We describe the possibility of drastically boosting the spontaneous emission of a collection of two-level quantum emitters by embedding them in an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) environment, consisting of a plasmonic waveguide operated at cut-off. This phenomenon relies on the combination of Purcell enhancement and Dicke superradiance effects, exploiting the large and uniform local density of states in ENZ channels, which is shown to significantly extend the spatial extent of these quantum effects. We envision exciting applications in optical sensing, molecular detection and low-threshold lasing.
Non-linear and bistable optical systems are a key enabling technology for the next generation optical networks and photonic neural systems with many potential applications in optical logic and information processing. Here, we propose a novel bistable resonator-free all-optical waveguide device based on indium tin oxide as nonlinear epsilon-near-zero material providing a cost-efficient and high-performance binarity photonic platform. The salient features of the proposed device are compatibility with silicon photonics, enabling sub-picosecond operation speeds with moderate switching power. The d…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) media disclose the peculiarities of electrodynamics in the limit of infinite wavelength but non-zero frequency for experiments and applications. Theory suggests that wave interaction with obstacles and disturbances dramatically changes in this domain. To investigate the optics of those effects we fabricated a nanostructured 2D optical ENZ multilayer waveguide that is probed with wavelength-tuned laser light via a nanoscale wave launch configuration. In this experimental framework we directly optically measure wave propagation and diffraction in a realistic system with t…
In this work we investigate the nonperturbative decay dynamics of a quantum emitter coupled to a composite right/left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL). Our theory captures the contributions from the different spectral features of the waveguide, providing an accurate prediction beyond the weak coupling regime, and illustrating the multiple possibilities offered by the nontrivial dispersion of metamaterial waveguides. We show that the waveguide is characterized by a band-gap with two asymmetric edges: (i) a mu-near-zero (MNZ) band edge, where spontaneous emission is inhibited and an unstable p…
Nanoparticle chain waveguide based on negative-epsilon material is investigated through a generic 3D finite-element Bloch-mode solver which derives complex propagation constant ($k$). Our study starts from waveguides made of non-dispersive material, which not only singles out "waveguide dispersion" but also motivates search of new materials to achieve guidance at unconventional wavelengths. Performances of gold or silver chain waveguides are then evaluated; a concise comparison of these two types of chain waveguides has been previously missing. Beyond these singly-plasmonic chain waveguides, w…
We theoretically study unattenuated electromagnetic guided wave modes in centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal layered systems. By solving Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic fields and using the appropriate boundary conditions, we derive dispersion relations for propagating modes in a finite-sized Weyl semimetal. Our findings reveal that for ultrathin structures, and proper Weyl cones tilts, extremely localized guided waves can propagate along the semimetal interface over a certain range of frequencies. This follows from the anisotropic nature of the semimetal where the diagonal components o…
There has been recent interest in the development of optical analogues of lumped element circuitry, where optical elements act as effective optical inductors, capacitors, and resistors. Such optical circuitry requires the photonic equivalent of electrical wires, structures able carry optical frequency signals to and from the lumped circuit elements while simultaneously maintaining signal carrier wavelengths much larger than the size of the lumped elements. Here we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of hybrid metal/doped-semiconductor 'photonic wires' operating at optical…
Plasmonic Electro-Optic Modulators based on Epsilon-Near-Zero Materials: Comparing the Classical Drift-Diffusion and Schrödinger-Poisson Coupling Models
Ultrafast sub-ps THz pulse conveys rich distinctive spectral fingerprints related to the vibrational or rotational modes of biomolecules and can be used to resolve the time-dependent dynamics of the motions. Thus, an efficient platform for enhancing the THz light-matter interaction is strongly demanded. Waveguides, owing to their tightly spatial confinement of the electromagnetic fields and the longer interaction distance, are promising platforms. However, the efficient feeding of the sub-ps THz pulse to the waveguides remains challenging due to the ultra-wide bandwidth property of the ultrafa…
In recent years, the concept of metamaterials has offered platforms for unconventional tailoring and manipulation of the light-matter interaction. Here, we explore the notion of "static optics", in which the electricity and magnetism are decoupled and their fields are statically distributed, while being temporally dynamic. This occurs when both the relative effective permittivity and permeability attain near-zero values at an operating frequency. We theoretically investigate some of the unprecedented wave features, such as unusual radiation characteristics of an emitter embedded in such epsilo…
Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterial with the relative permittivity approaching zero has been a hot research subject in the past decades. The wave in the ENZ region has infinite phase velocity ($v=1/\sqrt{\varepsilonμ}$), whereas it cannot efficiently travel into the other devices or air due to the impedance mismatch or near-zero group velocity. In this paper, we demonstrate that the tunable index-near-zero (INZ) modes with vanishing wavenumbers ($k=0$) and nonzero group velocities ($v_\mathrm{g} \neq 0$) can be achieved in nonreciprocal magneto-optical systems. This kind of INZ modes has been…
In this study, we theoretically and numerically investigate the resonant modes and reflectance of an optical grating consisting of a wavy dielectric slab by applying the spectral element method. The presence of the wavy shape transforms the waveguide modes into leaky resonant modes. A few resonant modes with specific longitudinal wave number have infinitely large Q factor, while the other resonant modes have finite Q factor. For the leaky resonant mode with zero longitudinal wave number, the Q factor is inversely proportional to the amplitude of the wavy shape. An array of multiple low-Q wavy …
