We present elemental abundance patterns (C, N, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni) for a population of 135 massive quiescent galaxies at $z\sim0.7$ with ultra-deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy drawn from the LEGA-C survey. We derive average ages and elemental abundances in four bins of stellar velocity dispersion ($σ_v$) ranging from 150$~$km$\,$s$^{-1}$ to 250$~$km$\,$s$^{-1}$ using a full-spectrum hierarchical Bayesian model. The resulting elemental abundance measurements are precise to 0.05$\,$dex. The majority of elements, as well as the total metallicity and stellar age, show a positive correlation with $σ_v$. Thus, the highest dispersion galaxies formed the earliest and are the most metal-rich. We find only mild or non-significant trends between [X/Fe] and $σ_v$, suggesting that the average star-formation timescale does not strongly depend on velocity dispersion. To first order, the abundance patterns of the $z\sim0.7$ quiescent galaxies are strikingly similar to those at $z\sim0$. However, at the lowest velocity dispersions the $z\sim0.7$ galaxies have slightly enhanced N, Mg, Ti, and Ni abundance ratios and earlier formation redshifts than their $z\sim0$ counterparts. Thus, while the higher-mass quiescent galaxy population shows little evolution, the low-mass quiescent galaxies population has grown significantly over the past six billion years. Finally, the abundance patterns of both $z\sim0$ and $z\sim0.7$ quiescent galaxies differ considerably from theoretical prediction based on a chemical evolution model, indicating that our understanding of the enrichment histories of these galaxies is still very limited.
We present elemental abundances and stellar population ages for 68 massive quiescent galaxies at $0.59\leq z\leq0.75$ from the LEGA-C survey. The abundance patterns and ages, derived from full-spectrum modeling, are examined as a function of stellar mass ($M_*$) and size (i.e., half-light radius; $R_e$). We find that both [Mg/H] and [Fe/H] do not vary with stellar mass but are correlated with $M_*/R_e$ for quiescent galaxies with $M_*>10^{10.5} M_\odot$. Thus, at fixed mass, compact quiescent galaxies are on average more metal rich. This result reinforces the picture that supernova feedback an…
Using stellar population synthesis models to infer star formation histories (SFHs), we analyse photometry and spectroscopy of a large sample of quiescent galaxies which are members of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)-selected galaxy clusters across a wide range of redshifts. We calculate stellar masses and mass-weighted ages for 837 quiescent cluster members at 0.3 < z < 1.4 using rest-frame optical spectra and the Python-based Prospector framework, from 61 clusters in the SPT-GMOS Spectroscopic Survey (0.3 < z < 0.9) and 3 clusters in the SPT Hi-z cluster sample (1.25 < z < 1.4). We analyse spectra of…
We analyze stellar age indicators (D$_n$4000 and EW(H$δ$)) and sizes of 467 quiescent galaxies with $M_\ast \geq 10^{10} M_\odot$ at $z\sim0.7$ drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey. Interpreting index variations in terms of equivalent single stellar population age, we find that the median stellar population is younger for larger galaxies at fixed stellar mass. The effect is significant, yet small; the ages of the larger and the smaller subsets differ by only $<500$ Myr, much less than the age variation among individual galaxies ($\sim1.5$ Gyr). At the same time, quiescent galaxies with the stro…
Massive luminous red galaxies (LRGs) are believed to be evolving passively and can be used as cosmic chronometers to estimate the Hubble constant. However, different LRGs may be located in different environments. The environmental effects may limit the use of the LRGs as cosmic chronometers. We aim to investigate the environmental and mass dependence of the formation of 'quiescent' LRGs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Date Release 8 and to pave the way for using LRGs as cosmic chronometers. Using the population synthesis software STARLIGHT, we derive the stellar populations in each …
We use deep \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} spectroscopy to constrain the metallicities and (\editone{light-weighted}) ages of massive ($\log M_\ast/M_\odot\gtrsim10$) galaxies selected to have quiescent stellar populations at $1.0<z<1.8$. The data include 12--orbit depth coverage with the WFC3/G102 grism covering $\sim$ $8,000<λ<11,500$~Å\, at a spectral resolution of $R\sim 210$ taken as part of the CANDELS Lyman-$α$ Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey. At $1.0<z<1.8$, the spectra cover important stellar population features in the rest-frame optical. We simulate a suite of stellar popula…
We present low-resolution near-infrared stacked spectra from the 3D-HST survey up to $z=2.0$ and fit them with commonly used stellar population synthesis models: BC03 (Bruzual & Charlot, 2003), FSPS10 (Flexible Stellar Population Synthesis, Conroy & Gunn 2010), and FSPS-C3K (Conroy, Kurucz, Cargile, Castelli, in prep). The accuracy of the grism redshifts allows the unambiguous detection of many emission and absorption features, and thus a first systematic exploration of the rest-frame optical spectra of galaxies up to $z=2$. We select massive galaxies ($\rm log(M_{*} / M_{\odot}) > 10.8$), we …

REQUIEM-2D (REsolving QUIEscent Magnified galaxies with 2D grism spectroscopy) is comprised of a sample of 8 massive ($\log M_*/M_\odot > 10.6$) strongly lensed quiescent galaxies at $z\sim2$. REQUIEM-2D combines the natural magnification from strong gravitational lensing with the high spatial-resolution grism spectroscopy of \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} through a spectrophotometric fit to study spatially resolved stellar populations. We show that quiescent galaxies in the REQUIEM-2D survey have diverse formation histories manifesting as a gradient in stellar ages, including examples of (1) a…

We present results from modeling the optical spectra of a large sample of quiescent galaxies between 0.1 < z < 0.7 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES). We examine how the stellar ages and abundance patterns of galaxies evolve over time as a function of stellar mass from 10^{9.6}-10^{11.8} Msun. Galaxy spectra are stacked in bins of mass and redshift, and modeled over a wavelength range from 4000 A to 5500 A. Full spectrum stellar population synthesis modeling provides estimates of the age and the abundances of the elements Fe, Mg, C, N, and C…
We investigate the stellar populations for a sample of 24 quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 using deep rest-frame optical spectra obtained with Keck MOSFIRE. By fitting templates simultaneously to the spectroscopic and photometric data, and exploring a variety of star formation histories, we obtain robust measurements of median stellar ages and residual levels of star formation. After subtracting the stellar templates, the stacked spectrum reveals the Halpha and [NII] emission lines, providing an upper limit on the ongoing star formation rate of 0.9 +/- 0.1 Msun/yr. By combining the MOSFIRE …
Massive quiescent galaxies (MQGs) are thought to have formed stars rapidly at early times followed by a long period of quiescence. The recent discovery of a MQG, ZF-COSMOS-20115 at $z\sim4$, only 1.5 Gyr after the big bang, places new constraints on galaxy growth and the role of feedback in early star formation. Spectroscopic follow-up confirmed ZF-COSMOS-20115 as a MQG at $z=3.717$ with an estimated stellar mass of ${\sim}10^{11}\mathrm{M}_\odot$, showing no evidence of recent star formation. We use the Meraxes semi-analytic model to investigate how ZF-COSMOS-20115 analogues build stellar mas…
We study the star formation histories (SFHs) and mass-weighted ages of 331 UVJ-selected quiescent galaxies in 11 galaxy clusters and in the field at 1<z<1.5 from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early ENvironments (GOGREEN) survey. We determine the SFHs of individual galaxies by simultaneously fitting rest-frame optical spectroscopy and broadband photometry to stellar population models. We confirm that the SFHs are consistent with more massive galaxies having on average earlier formation times. Comparing galaxies found in massive clusters with those in the field, we find galaxies wi…
We use high signal-to-noise spectroscopy for a sample of 232 quiescent galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster, to investigate how their stellar populations depend on velocity dispersion, luminosity and stellar mass. The sample spans a large range in velocity dispersion (sigma from 30-300 km/s) and in luminosity (M_R from -18.7 to -23.2). Estimates of age, total metallicity (Z/H) and alpha-element abundance ratio (a/Fe) were derived from absorption-line analysis, using single-burst models. Age, Z/H and a/Fe are all correlated positively with velocity dispersion, but we also find significant resid…
We use surveys covering the redshift range $0.05 < z < 3.8$ to explore quiescent galaxy scaling relations and the redshift evolution of the velocity dispersion, size, and dynamical mass at fixed stellar mass. For redshift $z < 0.6$ we derive mass limited samples and demonstrate that these large samples enhance constraints on the evolution of the quiescent population. The constraints include 2985 new velocity dispersions from the SHELS F2 survey (Geller et al. 2014). In contrast with the known substantial evolution of size with redshift, evolution in the velocity dispersion is negligible. The d…
We investigate the stellar populations of 25 massive, galaxies ($\log[M_\ast/M_\odot] \geq 10.9$) at $1.5 < z < 2$ using data obtained with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) on the ESO VLT. Targets were selected to be quiescent based on their broadband colors and redshifts using data from the 3D-HST grism survey. The mean redshift of our sample is $\bar{z} = 1.75$, where KMOS YJ-band data probe age- and metallicity-sensitive absorption features in the rest-frame optical, including the $G$ band, Fe I, and high-order Balmer lines. Fitting simple stellar population models to a stack of …
We search the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Baryon Oscillation Sky Survey to identify ~5500 massive compact quiescent galaxy candidates at 0.2<z<0.8. We robustly classify a subsample of 438 E+A galaxies based on their spectral properties and make this catalog publicly available. We examine sizes, stellar population ages and kinematics of galaxies in the sample and show that the physical properties of compact E+A galaxies suggest that they are a progenitor of massive compact quiescent galaxies. Thus, two classes of objects-compact E+A and compact quiescent galaxies-may be linked by a common …
This Letter examines how the sizes, structures, and color gradients of galaxies change along the quiescent sequence. Our sample consists of ~400 quiescent galaxies at $1.0\le z\le2.5$ and $10.1 \le \log{M_*/M_\odot}\le11.6$ in three CANDELS fields. We exploit deep multi-band HST imaging to derive accurate mass profiles and color gradients, then use an empirical calibration from rest-frame UVJ colors to estimate galaxy ages. We find that -- contrary to previous results -- the youngest quiescent galaxies are not significantly smaller than older quiescent galaxies at fixed stellar mass. These `po…
We investigate the lowest-mass quiescent galaxies known to exist in isolated environments ($\mathrm{M^* = 10^{9.0-9.5} \ M_\odot}$; 1.5 Mpc from a more massive galaxy). This population may represent the lowest stellar mass galaxies in which internal feedback quenches galaxy-wide star formation. We present Keck/ESI long-slit spectroscopy for 27 isolated galaxies in this regime: 20 quiescent galaxies and 7 star-forming galaxies. We measure emission line strengths as a function of radius and place galaxies on the Baldwin Phillips Terlevich (BPT) diagram. Remarkably, 16 of 20 quiescent galaxies in…
Tracing the emergence of the massive quiescent galaxy (QG) population requires the build-up of reliable quenched samples. We present Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/G141 grism spectra of 10 quiescent galaxy candidates selected at $2.5<z<3.5$ in the COSMOS field. Spectroscopic confirmation for the whole sample is obtained within 1-3 orbits based on the presence of strong spectral breaks and Balmer absorption lines. Combining their spectra with optical to near-IR photometry, star-forming solutions are formally rejected for the entire sample. Broad spectral indices are consistent with the presence of…
The HectoMAP survey provides a complete, mass-limited sample of 30,231 quiescent galaxies with $i-$band Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC SSP) imaging that spans the redshift range $0.2 <z < 0.6$. We combine half-light radii based on HSC SSP imaging with redshifts and D$_n4000$ to explore the size - mass relation, $R_{e} = A \times M_{*}^α$, and its evolution for the entire HectoMAP quiescent population and for two subsets of the data. Newcomers with $1.5 < \mathrm{D}_n4000 < 1.6$ at each redshift show a steeper increase in $A$ as the universe ages than the population that descen…
The stellar populations of intermediate-redshift galaxies can shed light onto the growth of massive galaxies in the last 8 billion years. We perform deep, multi-object rest-frame optical spectroscopy with IMACS/Magellan of ~70 galaxies in the E-CDFS with redshift 0.65<z<0.75, apparent magnitude R>22.7 and stellar mass >10^{10}Msun. Following the Bayesian approach adopted for previous low-redshift studies, we constrain the stellar mass, mean stellar age and stellar metallicity of individual galaxies from stellar absorption features. We characterize for the first time the dependence of stellar m…
We present a detailed analysis of a large sample of spectroscopically confirmed ultra-massive quiescent galaxies (${\rm{log}}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})\sim11.5$) at $z\gtrsim2$. This sample comprises 15 galaxies selected in the COSMOS and UDS fields by their bright K-band magnitudes and followed up with VLT/X-shooter spectroscopy and HST/WFC3 $H_{F160W}$ imaging. These observations allow us to unambiguously confirm their redshifts ascertain their quiescent nature and stellar ages, and to reliably assess their internal kinematics and effective radii. We find that these galaxies are compact, consisten…
We present a sample of 151 massive ($M_* > 10^{10}\mathrm{M_\odot}$) quiescent galaxies at $2 < z < 5$, based on a sophisticated Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting analysis of the CANDELS UDS and GOODS-South fields. Our sample includes a robust sub-sample of 61 objects for which we confidently exclude low-redshift and star-forming solutions. We identify 10 robust objects at $z>3$, of which 2 are at $z>4$. We report formation redshifts, demonstrating that the oldest objects formed at $z > 6$, however individual ages from our photometric data have significant uncertainties, typically …
A Glimpse of the Stellar Populations and Elemental Abundances of Gravitationally Lensed, Quiescent Galaxies at $z\gtrsim 1$ with Keck Deep Spectroscopy
We present a sample of 34 spectroscopically confirmed BzK-selected ~1e11 Msun quiescent galaxies (pBzK) in the COSMOS field. The targets were initially observed with VIMOS on the VLT to facilitate the calibration of the photometric redshifts of massive galaxies at z >~ 1.5. Here we describe the reduction and analysis of the data, and the spectrophotometric properties of these pBzK galaxies. In particular, using a spatially resolved median 2D spectrum, we find that the fraction of stellar populations with ages <1 Gyr is at least 3 times higher in the outer regions of the pBzK galaxies than in t…
We present a study of the relation between galaxy stellar age and mass for 14 members of the $z=1.62$ protocluster IRC 0218, using multiband imaging and HST G102 and G141 grism spectroscopy. Using $UVJ$ colors to separate galaxies into star forming and quiescent populations, we find that at stellar masses $M_* \geq 10^{10.85} M_{\odot}$, the quiescent fraction in the protocluster is $f_Q=1.0^{+0.00}_{-0.37}$, consistent with a $\sim 2\times $ enhancement relative to the field value, $f_Q=0.45^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$. At masses $10^{10.2} M_{\odot} \leq M_* \leq 10^{10.85} M_{\odot}$, $f_Q$ in the clu…
In order to test a possible evolutionary scenario of high-$z$ compact quiescent galaxies (cQGs) that they can survive as local compact cores embedded in local massive galaxies with different morphology classes, we explore the star formation histories of local compact cores according to their spectral analysis. We build a sample of 182 massive galaxies with compact cores (${M}_{*,{\rm core}} > 10^{10.6} {\rm M}_\odot$) at $0.02 \leq z \leq 0.06$ from SDSS DR7 spectroscopic catalogue. STARLIGHT package is used to analyze the median stacked spectra and derive the stellar ages and metallicities. O…
Single flux density measurements at observed-frame sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths are commonly used to probe dust and gas masses in galaxies. In this Letter, we explore the robustness of this method to infer dust mass, focusing on quiescent galaxies, using a series of controlled experiments on four massive haloes from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. Our starting point is four star-forming, central galaxies at seven redshifts between z=1.5 and z=4.5. We generate modified quiescent galaxies that have been quenched for 100Myr, 500Myr, or 1Gyr prior to each of the…
Optically-compact star-forming galaxies (SFGs) have been proposed as immediate progenitors of quiescent galaxies, although their origin and nature are debated. Were they formed in slow secular processes or in rapid merger-driven starbursts? Addressing this question would provide fundamental insight into how quenching occurs. We explore the location of the general population of galaxies with respect to fundamental star-forming and structural relations, identify compact SFGs based on their stellar core densities, and study three diagnostics of the burstiness of star formation: 1) Star formation …
Cosmic chronometers may be used to measure the age difference between passively evolving galaxy populations to calculate the Hubble parameter H(z). The age estimator emerges from the relationship between the amplitude of the rest frame Balmer break at 4000 angstroms and the age of a galaxy, assuming that there is one single stellar population within each galaxy. However, recent literature has shown possible contamination (up to 2.4% of the stellar mass in a high redshift sample) of a young component embedded within the predominantly old population of the quiescent galaxy. We compared the data …
We present a rest-frame UV-optical stacked spectrum representative of massive quiescent galaxies at $1.0<z<1.3$ with log$(M_*/\rm{M_\odot})>10.8$. The stack is constructed using VANDELS survey data, combined with new KMOS observations. We apply two independent full-spectral-fitting approaches, measuring a total metallicity, [Z/H]=$-0.13\pm0.08$ with Bagpipes, and [Z/H]=$0.04\pm0.14$ with Alf, a fall of $\sim0.2-0.3$ dex compared with the local Universe. We also measure an iron abundance, [Fe/H] =$-0.18\pm0.08$, a fall of $\sim0.15$ dex compared with the the local Universe. We measure the alpha…
In the early Universe finding massive galaxies that have stopped forming stars present an observational challenge as their rest-frame ultraviolet emission is negligible and they can only be reliably identified by extremely deep near-infrared surveys. These have revealed the presence of massive, quiescent early-type galaxies appearing in the universe as early as z$\sim$2, an epoch 3 Gyr after the Big Bang. Their age and formation processes have now been explained by an improved generation of galaxy formation models where they form rapidly at z$\sim$3-4, consistent with the typical masses and ag…
The chemical composition of galaxies has been measured out to z~4. However, nearly all studies beyond z~0.7 are based on strong-line emission from HII regions within star-forming galaxies. Measuring the chemical composition of distant quiescent galaxies is extremely challenging, as the required stellar absorption features are faint and shifted to near-infrared wavelengths. Here, we present ultra-deep rest-frame optical spectra of five massive quiescent galaxies at z~1.4, all of which show numerous stellar absorption lines. We derive the abundance ratios [Mg/Fe] and [Fe/H] for three out of five…

We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to place constraints on the stellar population properties of 29 quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) across different environments. We use the fully Bayesian routine PROSPECTOR coupled with archival data in the optical, near, and mid-infrared from Spitzer and WISE under the assumption of an exponentially declining star formation history. We recover the stellar mass, age, metallicity, dust content, star formation time scales and photometric redshifts (photo-zs) of the UDGs studied. Using the mid-infrared data, we probe the existence of dust i…
Oxygen and carbon are important elements in stellar populations. Their behavior refers to the formation history of the stellar populations. C and O abundances would also obviously influence stellar opacities and the overall metal abundance $Z$. With observed high-quality spectroscopic properties, we construct stellar models with C and O elements, to give more accurate ages for 70 metal-poor dwarfs, which have been determined to be high-$α$ halo, low-$α$ halo and thick-disk stars. Our results show that high-$α$ halo stars are relatively older than low-$α$ halo stars by around 2.0 Gyr. The thick…
Quiescent galaxies at $z \gtrsim 2$ are compact and have weak or absent emission lines, making it difficult to spatially resolve their kinematics and stellar populations using ground-based spectroscopy. Gravitationally lensed examples provide a promising route forward, but such objects are very rare. We describe a search in the fields of 232 galaxy clusters that has uncovered five bright ($H_{\rm AB} < 20$) lensed galaxies with red near-infrared colors. These include MRG-M0138, the brightest lensed galaxy known in the near-infrared. Analysis of near-infrared spectra and multiband photometry co…
We explore 7.5 billion years of evolution in the star formation activity of massive ($M_{\star}>10^{10.1}\,M_{\odot}$) cluster galaxies using a sample of 25 clusters over $0.15<z<1$ from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble and 11 clusters over $1<z<1.5$ from the IRAC Shallow Cluster Survey. Galaxy morphologies are determined visually using high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope images. Using the spectral energy distribution fitting code CIGALE, we measure star formation rates, stellar masses, and 4000 Å break strengths. The latter are used to separate quiescent and star-formin…
We investigate the origin of the evolution of the population-averaged size of quenched galaxies (QGs) through a spectroscopic analysis of their stellar ages. The two most favoured scenarios for this evolution are either the size growth of individual galaxies through a sequence of dry minor merger events, or the addition of larger, newly quenched galaxies to the pre-existing population (i.e., a progenitor bias effect). We use the 20k zCOSMOS-bright spectroscopic survey to select bona fide quiescent galaxies at 0.2<z<0.8. We stack their spectra in bins of redshift, stellar mass and size to compu…
We study the relation between stellar ages and vertical velocity dispersion (the age-velocity relation, or AVR) in a sample of seven simulated disc galaxies. In our simulations, the shape of the AVR for stars younger than 9 Gyr depends strongly on the merger history at low redshift, with even 1:10 - 1:15 mergers being able to create jumps in the AVR (although these jumps might not be detectable if the errors on stellar ages are on the order of 30%). For galaxies with a quiescent history at low redshift, we find that the vertical velocity dispersion rises smoothly for ages up to 8-9 Gyr, follow…
We present Star Formation Histories (SFHs) for a sample of 104 massive (stellar mass M > 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) quiescent galaxies (MQGs) at $z$=1.0-1.5 from the analysis of spectro-photometric data from the SHARDS and HST/WFC3 G102 and G141 surveys of the GOODS-N field, jointly with broad-band observations from ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared (Far-IR). The sample is constructed on the basis of rest-frame UVJ colours and specific star formation rates (sSFR=SFR/Mass). The Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of each galaxy are compared to models assuming a delayed exponentially declining SFH. …
We study the slope, intercept, and scatter of the color-magnitude and color-mass relations for a sample of ten infrared red-sequence-selected clusters at z ~ 1. The quiescent galaxies in these clusters formed the bulk of their stars above z ~ 3 with an age spread Δt ~ 1 Gyr. We compare UVJ color-color and spectroscopic-based galaxy selection techniques, and find a 15% difference in the galaxy populations classified as quiescent by these methods. We compare the color-magnitude relations from our red-sequence selected sample with X-ray- and photometric- redshift-selected cluster samples of simil…
