In this contribution, we introduce and numerically evaluate a certified and adaptive localized reduced basis method as a local model in a trust-region optimization method for parameter optimization constrained by partial differential equations.
In this contribution we present a survey of concepts in localized model order reduction methods for parameterized partial differential equations. The key concept of localized model order reduction is to construct local reduced spaces that have only support on part of the domain and compute a global approximation by a suitable coupling of the local spaces. In detail, we show how optimal local approximation spaces can be constructed and approximated by random sampling. An overview of possible conforming and non-conforming couplings of the local spaces is provided and corresponding localized a po…
We consider control constrained optimal control problems governed by parameterized stationary Maxwell's system with the Gauss's law. The parameters enter through dielectric, magnetic permeability, and charge density. Moreover, the parameter set is assumed to be compact. We discretize the electric field by a finite element method and use variational discretization concept to discretize the control. We create a reduced basis method for the optimal control problem and establish uniform convergence of the reduced order solutions to that of the original high dimensional problem provided that the sn…

Projection-based reduced order models are effective at approximating parameter-dependent differential equations that are parametrically separable. When parametric separability is not satisfied, which occurs in both linear and nonlinear problems, projection-based methods fail to adequately reduce the computational complexity. Devising alternative reduced order models is crucial for obtaining efficient and accurate approximations to expensive high-fidelity models. In this work, we develop a time-stepping procedure for dynamical parameter-dependent problems, in which a neural-network is trained t…
We study the space of $C^1$ isogeometric spline functions defined on trilinearly parameterized multi-patch volumes. Amongst others, we present a general framework for the design of the $C^1$ isogeometric spline space and of an associated basis, which is based on the two-patch construction [7], and which works uniformly for any possible multi-patch configuration. The presented method is demonstrated in more detail on the basis of a particular subclass of trilinear multi-patch volumes, namely for the class of trilinearly parameterized multi-patch volumes with exactly one inner edge. For this spe…
Reduced basis methods build low-rank approximation spaces for the solution sets of parameterized PDEs by computing solutions of the given PDE for appropriately selected snapshot parameters. Localized reduced basis methods reduce the offline cost of computing these snapshot solutions by instead constructing a global space from spatially localized less expensive problems. In the case of online enrichment, these local problems are iteratively solved in regions of high residual and correspond to subdomain solves in domain decomposition methods. We show in this note that indeed there is a close rel…
This paper presents a method for the numerical treatment of reaction-convection-diffusion problems with parameter-dependent coefficients that are arbitrary rough and possibly varying at a very fine scale. The presented technique combines the reduced basis (RB) framework with the recently proposed super-localized orthogonal decomposition (SLOD). More specifically, the RB is used for accelerating the typically costly SLOD basis computation, while the SLOD is employed for an efficient compression of the problem's solution operator requiring coarse solves only. The combined advantages of both meth…
A non-intrusive model order reduction (MOR) method for solving parameterized electromagnetic scattering problems is proposed in this paper. A database collecting snapshots of high-fidelity solutions is built by solving the parameterized time-domain Maxwell equations for some values of the material parameters using a fullwave solver based on a high order discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method. To perform a prior dimensionality reduction, a set of reduced basis (RB) functions are extracted from the database via a two-step proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. Projection coeffic…
We present a two-level parameterized Model Order Reduction (pMOR) technique for the linear hyperbolic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) of time-domain elastodynamics. In order to approximate the frequency-domain PDE, we take advantage of the Port-Reduced Reduced-Basis Component (PR-RBC) method to develop (in the offline stage) reduced bases for subdomains; the latter are then assembled (in the online stage) to form the global domains of interest. The PR-RBC approach reduces the effective dimensionality of the parameter space and also provides flexibility in topology and geometry. In the onli…

This thesis presents recent advances in model order reduction methods with the primary aim to construct online-efficient reduced surrogate models for parameterized multiscale phenomena and accelerate large-scale PDE-constrained parameter optimization methods. In particular, we present several different adaptive RB approaches that can be used in an error-aware trust-region framework for progressive construction of a surrogate model used during a certified outer optimization loop. In addition, we elaborate on several different enhancements for the trust-region reduced basis (TR-RB) algorithm and…
We propose a component-based (CB) parametric model order reduction (pMOR) formulation for parameterized {nonlinear} elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). CB-pMOR is designed to deal with large-scale problems for which full-order solves are not affordable in a reasonable time frame or parameters' variations induce topology changes that prevent the application of monolithic pMOR techniques. We rely on the partition-of-unity method (PUM) to devise global approximation spaces from local reduced spaces, and on Galerkin projection to compute the global state estimate. We propose a randomiz…

Repeatedly solving the parameterized optimal mass transport (pOMT) problem is a frequent task in applications such as image registration and adaptive grid generation. It is thus critical to develop a highly efficient reduced solver that is equally accurate as the full order model. In this paper, we propose such a machine learning-like method for pOMT by adapting a new reduced basis (RB) technique specifically designed for nonlinear equations, the reduced residual reduced over-collocation (R2-ROC) approach, to the parameterized Monge-Amp$\grave{\rm e}$re equation. It builds on top of a narrow-s…
In this contribution we present a new modeling and simulation framework for parametrized Lithium-ion battery cells. We first derive a new continuum model for a rather general intercalation battery cell on the basis of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. In order to efficiently evaluate the resulting parameterized non-linear system of partial differential equations the reduced basis method is employed. The reduced basis method is a model order reduction technique on the basis of an incremental hierarchical approximate proper orthogonal decomposition approach and empirical operator interpolation. Th…
Quick simulations for iterative evaluations of multi-design variables and boundary conditions are essential to find the optimal acoustic conditions in building design. We propose to use the reduced basis method (RBM) for realistic room acoustic scenarios where the surfaces have inhomogeneous acoustic properties, which enables quick evaluations of changing absorption materials for different surfaces in room acoustic simulations. The RBM has shown its benefit to speed up room acoustic simulations by three orders of magnitude for uniform boundary conditions. This study investigates the RBM with t…
