We consider a wireless network where N nodes compete for a shared channel over the CSMA/CA protocol to deliver observed updates to a common remote monitor. For this network, we rate the information freshness of the CSMA/CA based network using the age of information (AoI). Different from previous work, the network we consider is unsaturated. To theoretically analyze the transmission behavior of the CSMA/CA based network, we, therefore, develop an equivalent and tractable Markov transmission model. Based on this newly developed model, the transmission probability, collision probability and average AoI of the network are obtained. Our numerical results show that as the packet rate and the number of nodes increase, both the transmission probability and collision probability are increasing; the average AoI first decreases and then increases as the packet rate increases and increases with the number of nodes.
We investigate the optimal carrier sensing threshold in random CSMA/CA networks considering the effect of binary exponential backoff. We propose an iterative algorithm for optimizing the carrier sensing threshold and hence maximizing the area spectral efficiency. We verify that simulations are consistent with our analytical results.
Recently, it has been shown that CSMA-type random access algorithms can achieve the maximum possible throughput in ad hoc wireless networks. However, these algorithms assume an idealized continuous-time CSMA protocol where collisions can never occur. In addition, simulation results indicate that the delay performance of these algorithms can be quite bad. On the other hand, although some simple heuristics (such as distributed approximations of greedy maximal scheduling) can yield much better delay performance for a large set of arrival rates, they may only achieve a fraction of the capacity reg…
We consider a wireless sensor network in which all the nodes wish to spread their updates over the network using CSMA/CA protocol. We investigate the age of information of the spreading process from a transmitter perspective, which is referred to as the \textit{broadcast age of information (BAoI)}. To be specific, BAoI is the age of the latest update successfully broadcasted to the one-hop neighbors of a node, and thus is suitable to measure the rapidity of the update spreading process. We establish an equivalent transmission model of the network by deriving the transmission probability and th…
The strength of carrier-sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) can be combined with that of time-division multiple access (TDMA) to enhance the channel access performance in wireless networks such as the IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless personal area networks (WPANs). In particular, the performance of legacy CSMA/CA-based medium access control (MAC) scheme in congested networks can be enhanced through a hybrid CSMA/CA-TDMA scheme while preserving the scalability property. In this paper, we present distributed and centralized channel access models which follow the transmission str…
Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) protocols have been shown to reach the full capacity region for data communication in wireless networks, with polynomial complexity. However, current literature achieves the throughput optimality with an exponential delay scaling with the network size, even in a simplified scenario for transmission jobs with uniform sizes. Although CSMA protocols with order-optimal average delay have been proposed for specific topologies, no existing work can provide worst-case delay guarantee for each job in general network settings, not to mention the case when the jobs h…
It has been recently suggested that in wireless networks, CSMA-based distributed MAC algorithms could achieve optimal utility without any message passing. We present the first proof of convergence of such adaptive CSMA algorithms towards an arbitrarily tight approximation of utility-optimizing schedule. We also briefly discuss the tradeoff between optimality at equilibrium and short-term fairness practically achieved by such algorithms.
Recent studies on MAC scheduling have shown that carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) algo- rithms can be throughput optimal for arbitrary wireless network topology. However, these results are highly sensitive to the underlying assumption on 'static' or 'fixed' system conditions. For example, if channel conditions are time-varying, it is unclear how each node can adjust its CSMA parameters, so-called backoff and channel holding times, using its local channel information for the desired high performance. In this paper, we study 'channel-aware' CSMA (A-CSMA) algorithms in time-varying channels, …
In this paper, we consider CSMA policies for scheduling of multihop wireless networks with one-hop traffic. The main contribution of this paper is to propose Unlocking CSMA (U-CSMA) policy that enables to obtain high throughput with low (average) packet delay for large wireless networks. In particular, the delay under U-CSMA policy becomes order-optimal. For one-hop traffic, delay is defined to be order-optimal if it is O(1), i.e., it stays bounded, as the network-size increases to infinity. Using mean field theory techniques, we analytically show that for torus (grid-like) interference topolo…
In this paper, we investigate a network of N interfering links contending for the channel to send their data by employing the well-known Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) scheme. By leveraging the notion of stochastic hybrid systems, we find a closed form of the total average age of the network in this setting. Armed with this expression, we formulate the optimization problem of minimizing the total average age of the network by calibrating the back-off time of each link. By analyzing its structure, the optimization problem is then converted to an equivalent convex problem that can be solve…
We analytically study a carrier sense multiple access (CSMA)-based network. In the network, the nodes have their own average throughput demands for transmission to a common base station. The CSMA is based on the request-to-send (RTS)/clear-to-send (CTS) handshake mechanism. Each node individually chooses its probability of transmitting an RTS packet, which specifies the length of its requested data transmission period. The RTS packets transmitted by different nodes in the same time slot interfere with one another, and compete to be received by the base station. If a node's RTS has the received…
Wireless local area networks (WLAN) still suffer from a severe performance discrepancy between different users in the uplink. This is because of the spatially varying channel conditions provided by the wireless medium. Cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocols as for example CoopMAC were proposed to mitigate this problem. In this work, it is shown that cooperation implies for cooperating nodes a tradeoff between throughput and bit-cost, which is the energy needed to transmit one bit. The tradeoff depends on the degree of cooperation. For carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) based netwo…
Devices in a beacon-enabled network use slotted CSMA/CA to contend for channel usage. Each node in the network competes for the channels when ready to transmit data. The slotted CSMA/CA mechanism based on the super-frame structure fairly provides communication chance for each node and makes a reasonable usage of the available energy in beacon-enabled Zigbee networks. When wireless nano-sensor nodes are implanted into the target human body area for detecting disease symptoms or virus existence, each node also requires a similar characteristic in channel sharing and in the transmission of event-…
Wireless blockchain network is proposed to enable a decentralized and safe wireless networks for various blockchain applications. To achieve blockchain consensus in wireless network, one of the important steps is to broadcast new block using wireless channel. Under wireless network protocols, the block transmitting will be affected significantly. In this work, we focus on the consensus process in blockchain-based wireless local area network (B-WLAN) by investigating the impact of the media access control (MAC) protocol, CSMA/CA. With the randomness of the backoff counter in CSMA/CA, it is poss…
We model a dense wireless local area network where the access points (APs) employ carrier sense multiple access (CSMA)-type medium access control protocol. In our model, the spatial locations of the set of active APs are modeled using the random sequential adsorption (RSA) process, which is more accurate in terms of the density of active APs compared to the Matérn hard-core point process of type-II (MHPP-II) commonly used for modeling CSMA networks. Leveraging the theory of the RSA process from the statistical physics literature, we provide an approximate but accurate analytical result for the…
In wireless local area networks, spatially varying channel conditions result in a severe performance discrepancy between different nodes in the uplink, depending on their position. Both throughput and energy expense are affected. Cooperative protocols were proposed to mitigate these discrepancies. However, additional network state information (NSI) from other nodes is needed to enable cooperation. The aim of this work is to assess how NSI and the degree of cooperation affect throughput and energy expenses. To this end, a CSMA protocol called fairMAC is defined, which allows to adjust the amoun…
Recently there has been considerable interest in the design of efficient carrier sense multiple access(CSMA) protocol for wireless network. The basic assumption underlying recent results is availability of perfect carrier sense information. This allows for design of continuous time algorithm under which collisions are avoided. The primary purpose of this note is to show how these results can be extended in the case when carrier sense information may not be perfect, or equivalently delayed. Specifically, an adaptation of algorithm in Rajagopalan, Shah, Shin (2009) is presented here for time slo…
Transmission capacity of an ad hoc wireless network is analyzed when each node of the network harvests energy from nature, e.g. solar, wind, vibration etc. Transmission capacity is the maximum allowable density of nodes, satisfying a per transmitter-receiver rate, and an outage probability constraint. Energy arrivals at each node are assumed to follow a Bernoulli distribution, and each node stores energy using an energy buffer/battery. For ALOHA medium access protocol (MAP), optimal transmission probability that maximizes the transmission capacity is derived as a function of the energy arrival…
We consider a Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) based scheduling algorithm for a single-hop wireless network under a realistic Signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) model for the interference. We propose two local optimization based approximation algorithms to efficiently estimate certain attempt rate parameters of CSMA called fugacities. It is known that adaptive CSMA can achieve throughput optimality by sampling feasible schedules from a Gibbs distribution, with appropriate fugacities. Unfortunately, obtaining these optimal fugacities is an NP-hard problem. Further, the existing …
Two-way relaying can significantly improve performance of next generation wireless networks. However, due to its dependence on multi-node cooperation and transmission coordination, applying this technique to a wireless network in an effective and scalable manner poses a challenging problem. To tackle this problem without relying on complicated scheduling or network optimization algorithms, we propose a scalable random access scheme that takes measures in both the physical layer and the medium access control layer. Specifically, we propose a two-way relaying technique that supports fully asynch…
In this paper, we analyze status update systems modeled through the Stochastic Hybrid Systems (SHSs) tool. Contrary to previous works, we allow the system's transition dynamics to be polynomial functions of the Age of Information (AoI). This dependence allows us to encapsulate many applications and opens the door for more sophisticated systems to be studied. However, this same dependence on the AoI engenders technical and analytical difficulties that we address in this paper. Specifically, we first showcase several characteristics of the age processes modeled through the SHSs tool. Then, we pr…
Collisions with hidden terminals is a major cause of performance degradation in 802.11 and likewise wireless networks. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is utilized to avoid collisions at the cost of spatial reuse. This report studies receiver design to mitigate interference from hidden terminals. A wireless channel model with correlated fading in time is assumed. A message-passing approach is proposed, in which a receiver can successfully receive and decode partially overlapping transmissions from two sources rather than treating undesired one as thermal noise. …
Matérn hard core processes of types I and II are the point processes of choice to model concurrent transmitters in CSMA networks. We determine the mean interference observed at a node of the process and compare it with the mean interference in a Poisson point process of the same density. It turns out that despite the similarity of the two models, they behave rather differently. For type I, the excess interference (relative to the Poisson case) increases exponentially in the hard-core distance, while for type II, the gap never exceeds 1 dB.
In this paper, we propose a distributed throughput-optimal ad hoc wireless network scheduling algorithm, which is motivated by the celebrated simplex algorithm for solving linear programming (LP) problems. The scheduler stores a sparse set of basic schedules, and chooses the max-weight basic schedule for transmission in each time slot. At the same time, the scheduler tries to update the set of basic schedules by searching for a new basic schedule in a throughput increasing direction. We show that both of the above procedures can be achieved in a distributed manner. Specifically, we propose an …
In this paper, we propose a distributed multi-hop interference avoidance algorithm, namely, IAA to avoid co-channel interference inside a wireless body area network (WBAN). Our proposal adopts carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) between sources and relays and a flexible time division multiple access (FTDMA) between relays and coordinator. The proposed scheme enables low interfering nodes to transmit their messages using base channel. Depending on suitable situations, high interfering nodes double their contention windows (CW) and probably use switched orthogonal ch…
Radio resource sharing mechanisms are key to ensuring good performance in wireless networks. In their seminal paper \cite{tassiulas1}, Tassiulas and Ephremides introduced the Maximum Weighted Scheduling algorithm, and proved its throughput-optimality. Since then, there have been extensive research efforts to devise distributed implementations of this algorithm. Recently, distributed adaptive CSMA scheduling schemes \cite{jiang08} have been proposed and shown to be optimal, without the need of message passing among transmitters. However their analysis relies on the assumption that interference …
Location-based services in a wireless network require nodes to know their locations accurately. Conventional solutions rely on contention-based medium access, where only one node can successfully transmit at any time in any neighborhood. In this paper, a novel, complete, distributed ranging and localization solution is proposed, which let all nodes in the network broadcast their location estimates and measure distances to all neighbors simultaneously. An on-off signaling is designed to overcome the physical half-duplex constraint. In each iteration, all nodes transmit simultaneously, each broa…
This paper develops a distributed algorithm for rate allocation in wireless networks that achieves the same throughput region as optimal centralized algorithms. This cross-layer algorithm jointly performs medium access control (MAC) and physical-layer rate adaptation. The paper establishes that this algorithm is throughput-optimal for general rate regions. In contrast to on-off scheduling, rate allocation enables optimal utilization of physical-layer schemes by scheduling multiple rate levels. The algorithm is based on local queue-length information, and thus the algorithm is of significant pr…
A novel solution is proposed to undertake a frequent task in wireless networks, which is to let all nodes broadcast information to and receive information from their respective one-hop neighboring nodes. The contribution is two-fold. First, as each neighbor selects one message-bearing codeword from its unique codebook for transmission, it is shown that decoding their messages based on a superposition of those codewords through the multiaccess channel is fundamentally a problem of compressed sensing. In the case where each message consists of a small number of bits, an iterative algorithm based…

Future wireless access networks need to support diversified quality of service (QoS) metrics required by various types of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, e.g., age of information (AoI) for status generating sources and ultra low latency for safety information in vehicular networks. In this paper, a novel inner-state driven random access (ISDA) framework is proposed based on distributed policy learning, in particular a cross-entropy method. Conventional random access schemes, e.g., $p$-CSMA, assume state-less terminals, and thus assigning equal priorities to all. In ISDA, the inner-states of …
The extreme or maximum age of information (AoI) is analytically studied for wireless communication systems. In particular, a wireless powered single-antenna source node and a receiver (connected to the power grid) equipped with multiple antennas are considered when operated under independent Rayleigh-faded channels. Via the extreme value theory and its corresponding statistical features, we demonstrate that the extreme AoI converges to the Gumbel distribution whereas its corresponding parameters are obtained in straightforward closed-form expressions. Capitalizing on this result, the risk of t…
The existing medium access control (MAC) protocol of Wi-Fi networks (i.e., carrier-sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA)) suffers from poor performance in dense deployments due to the increasing number of collisions and long average backoff time in such scenarios. To tackle this issue, we propose an intelligent wireless MAC protocol based on deep learning (DL), referred to as DL-MAC, which significantly improves the spectrum efficiency of Wi-Fi networks. The goal of DL-MAC is to enable not only intelligent channel access but also intelligent rate adaptation. To achieve this …
This paper estimates the freshness of the information in a wireless relay communication system that employs simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) operating under ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) constraints. The Age of Information (AoI) metric calculates the time difference between the current time and the timestamp of the most recent update received by the receiver is used here to estimate the freshness of information. The short packet communication scheme is used to fulfil the reliability and latency requirements of the proposed wireless network and its…
Age of information (AoI), a metric to analyse data freshness, is of interest for time-critical applications in upcoming wireless networks. Besides, wireless power transfer (WPT) is also essential to prolong lifetime of a wireless sensor network. Thus, we study a flat-fading wireless powered cooperative network, wherein a source and a relay charge their finite-sized capacitors by harvesting energy from a remote power station. For two conventional decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying, average AoI and peak AoI (PAoI) are studied to show how the randomness of the data/powe…
Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is a promising approach for wireless networks. It allows nodes to transmit simultaneously. Due to the difficulties of scheduling simultaneous transmissions, existing works on PNC are based on simplified medium access control (MAC) protocols, which are not applicable to general multi-hop wireless networks, to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we propose a distributed MAC protocol that supports PNC in multi-hop wireless networks. The proposed MAC protocol is based on the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) strategy and can be regarded as an extension …
Autonomous wireless agents such as unmanned aerial vehicles or mobile base stations present a great potential for deployment in next-generation wireless networks. While current literature has been mainly focused on the use of agents within robotics or software applications, we propose a novel usage model for self-organizing agents suited to wireless networks. In the proposed model, a number of agents are required to collect data from several arbitrarily located tasks. Each task represents a queue of packets that require collection and subsequent wireless transmission by the agents to a central…
Age of Information (AoI) measures the freshness of data in mission critical Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications i.e., industrial internet, intelligent transportation systems etc. In this paper, a new system model is proposed to estimate the average AoI (AAoI) in an ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) enabled wireless communication system with decodeand-forward relay scheme over the quasi-static Rayleigh block fading channels. Short packet communication scheme is used to meet both reliability and latency requirements of the proposed wireless network. By resorting finite block len…
Age of information (AoI), defined as the time elapsed since the last received update was generated, is a newly proposed metric to measure the timeliness of information updates in a network. We consider AoI minimization problem for a network with general interference constraints, and time varying channels. We propose two policies, namely, virtual-queue based policy and age-based policy when the channel state is available to the network scheduler at each time step. We prove that the virtual-queue based policy is nearly optimal, up to a constant additive factor, and the age-based policy is at-mos…

Due to the scarcity in the wireless spectrum and limited energy resources especially in mobile applications, efficient resource allocation strategies are critical in wireless networks. Motivated by the recent advances in deep reinforcement learning (DRL), we address multi-agent DRL-based joint dynamic channel access and power control in a wireless interference network. We first propose a multi-agent DRL algorithm with centralized training (DRL-CT) to tackle the joint resource allocation problem. In this case, the training is performed at the central unit (CU) and after training, the users make…

Collaborative deep reinforcement learning (CDRL) algorithms in which multiple agents can coordinate over a wireless network is a promising approach to enable future intelligent and autonomous systems that rely on real-time decision-making in complex dynamic environments. Nonetheless, in practical scenarios, CDRL faces many challenges due to the heterogeneity of agents and their learning tasks, different environments, time constraints of the learning, and resource limitations of wireless networks. To address these challenges, in this paper, a novel semantic-aware CDRL method is proposed to enab…
