Hawking radiation can be regarded as a spontaneous and continuous creation of virtual particle-antiparticle pairs outside the event horizon of a black hole where strong tidal forces prevent the annihilation: the particle escapes to infinity contributing to the Hawking flux, while its corresponding antiparticle partner enters the event horizon and ultimately reaches the singularity. The aim of this paper is to investigate the energy density correlations between the Hawking particles and their partners across the event horizon of two models of non-singular black holes by calculating the two-point correlation function of the density operator of a massless scalar field. This analysis is motivated by the fact that in acoustic black holes particle-partner correlations are signalled by the presence of a peak in the equal time density-density correlator. Performing the calculation in a Schwarzschild black hole it was shown in [1] that the peak does not appear, mainly because of the singularity. It is then interesting to consider what happens when the singularity is not present. In the Hayward and Simpson-Visser non-singular black holes we show that the density-density correlator remains finite when the partner particle approaches the hypersurface that replaces the singularity, opening the possibility that partner-particle correlations can propagate towards other regions of spacetime instead of being lost in a singularity.
We investigate a stress-energy tensor for a CFT at strong coupling inside a small five-dimensional rotating Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta by using the holographic method. As a gravitational dual, we perturbatively construct a black droplet solution by applying the "derivative expansion" method, generalizing the work of Haddad (arXiv:1207.2305), and analytically compute the holographic stress-energy tensor for our solution. We find that the stress-energy tensor is finite at both the future and past outer (event) horizons, and that the energy density is negative just outside …
The quantum stress tensor $<T_{μν}>$ is calculated in the 2+1 dimensional black hole found by Banados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli. The Greens function, from which $<T_{μν}> $ is derived, is obtained by the method of images. For the non-rotating black hole, it is shown that $<T_{μν}>$ is finite on the event horizon, but diverges at the singularity. For the rotating solution, the stress tensor is finite at the outer horizon, but diverges near the inner horizon. This suggests that the inner horizon is quantum mechanically unstable against the formation of a singularity.
We prove that the quantum stress tensor for a massless scalar field in two dimensional non-selfsimilar Tolman Bondi dust collapse and Vaidya radiation collapse models diverges on the Cauchy horizon, if the latter exists. The two dimensional model is obtained by suppressing angular co-ordinates in the corresponding four dimensional spherical model.
We consider a quantum field which is in a Hartle-Hawking state propagating in a general spherically symmetric black hole space-time. We make use of uniform approximations to the radial equation to calculate the components of the stress tensor, renormalized using the Hadamard form of the Green's function, on the horizons of this space-time. We then specialize these results to the case of the `lukewarm' Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole and derive some conditions on the stress tensor for the regularity of the Hartle-Hawking state.
We consider massive scalar field theory on static four-dimensional space-times with horizons. We study the near horizon behaviour of the quantum expectation values of the stress-energy tensor operator for thermal state with generic temperatures. It turns out that the dependence of the expectation values on the temperature and tensor structure of the stress-energy tensor differs from the usual one in the Minkowski space-time. Moreover, for non-canonical temperatures these expectation values are divergent on the horizons. We also show that the Wightman functions have additional infrared peculiar…
We calculate the expectation values of the stress-energy tensor for both a massless minimally-coupled and dilaton-coupled 2D field propagating on an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, showing its regularity on the horizon in contrast with previous claims in the literature.
We calculate the renormalized vacuum polarization and stress tensor for a massless, arbitrarily coupled scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state on the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinte straight cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for non-integer Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.
The Hadamard renormalization prescription is used to derive a two dimensional analog of the renormalized stress tensor for a minimally coupled scalar field in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time. In the two dimensional analog the minimal coupling reduces to the conformal coupling and the stress tensor is found to be determined by the (nonlocal) contribution of the anomalous trace and some additional parameters in close relation to the work [1]. To properly relate the stress tensor to the state of outwards signals coming from the direction of the black hole at late times we propose a cut-off hyp…
Numerical results for the semi-classical stress-energy tensor outside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the 1980's and 1990's are re- examined in order to better understand the origin of Hawking radiation and the implications for the black hole information paradox. Polynomial fits to the numerical results for the 4D transverse stress are obtained for conformally-coupled spin 0 and spin 1 fields in the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states and. Analysis of the spin 0 Unruh state results clearly shows that the origin of the Hawking radiation is not pair creation or tunneling very c…
Analytic approximations to and numerical results for the semi-classical stress-energy tensor outside the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the 1980's and 1990's are re-examined in order to better understand the origin of Hawking radiation and the implications for the black hole information paradox. Polynomial fits to the numerical results for the tangential stress in 4D are obtained for conformally coupled spin 0 and spin 1 fields in the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh quantum states. What these results show is that the origin of the Hawking radiation is not pair creation or tunneling…
We calculate the expectation value of the stress energy tensor for a massless dilaton-coupled 2D scalar field propagating on an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole formed by the collapse of a timelike shell, showing its regularity on the horizon.
The regularized stress-energy tensor of the quantized massive scalar, spinor and vector fields inside the degenerate horizon of the regular charged black hole in the (anti-)de Sitter universe is constructed and examined. It is shown that although the components of the stress-energy tensor are small in the vicinity of the black hole degenerate horizon and near the regular center, they are quite big in the intermediate region. The oscillatory character of the stress-energy tensor can be ascribed to various responses of the higher curvature terms to the changes of the metric inside the (degenerat…
Contrary to previous claims, it is shown that the expectation values of the quantum stress tensor for a massless scalar field propagating on a two-dimensional extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black hole are indeed regular on the horizon.
We consider the spacetime geometry of a static but otherwise generic black hole (that is, the horizon geometry and topology are not necessarily spherically symmetric). It is demonstrated, by purely geometrical techniques, that the curvature tensors, and the Einstein tensor in particular, exhibit a very high degree of symmetry as the horizon is approached. Consequently, the stress-energy tensor will be highly constrained near any static Killing horizon. More specifically, it is shown that -- at the horizon -- the stress-energy tensor block-diagonalizes into ``transverse'' and ``parallel'' block…
The stress-energy tensor of a free quantized scalar field is calculated in the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime in the zero temperature vacuum state. The stress-energy appears to be regular on the event horizon, contrary to the suggestion provided by two-dimensional calculations. An analytic calculation on the event horizon for a thermal state shows that if the temperature is nonzero then the stress-energy diverges strongly there.
We review the quantization of scalar and gauge fields using Rindler coordinates with an emphasis on the physics of the Rindler horizon. In the thermal state at the Unruh temperature, correlators match their Minkowski vacuum values and the renormalized stress tensor vanishes, while at any other temperature the renormalized stress-energy diverges on the horizon. After giving a new derivation of some of these results using canonical quantization in the thermofield double state, we comment on the relevance of fluxes and boundary conditions at the horizon, which have arisen in calculations of entan…
The general form of the surface stress tensor of an infinitesimally thin shell located on a rotating null horizon is derived, when different interior and exterior geometries are joined there. Although the induced metric on the surface must be the same approached from either side, the first derivatives of the metric need not be. Such discontinuities lead to a Dirac $δ$-distribution in the Einstein tensor localized on the horizon. For a general stationary axisymmetric geometry the surface stress tensor can be expressed in terms of two geometric invariants that characterize the surface, namely th…
It is shown that the near horizon geometry of a generic extreme regular black hole solution of Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics is described by the $AdS_2 \times S^2$ spacetime.
We show that an analogue of the (four dimensional) image sum method can be used to reproduce the results, due to Krasnikov, that for the model of a real massless scalar field on the initial globally hyperbolic region IGH of two-dimensional Misner space there exist two-particle and thermal Hadamard states (built on the conformal vacuum) such that the (expectation value of the renormalised) stress-energy tensor in these states vanishes on IGH. However, we shall prove that the conclusions of a general theorem by Kay, Radzikowski and Wald still apply for these states. That is, in any of these stat…
We show that scalar perturbations of the eternal, rotating BTZ black hole should lead to an instability of the inner (Cauchy) horizon, preserving strong cosmic censorship. Because of backscattering from the geometry, plane wave modes have a divergent stress tensor at the event horizon, but suitable wavepackets avoid this difficulty, and are dominated at late times by quasinormal behavior. The wavepackets have cuts in the complexified coordinate plane that are controlled by requirements of continuity, single-valuedness and positive energy. Due to a focusing effect, regular wavepackets neverthel…
We obtain point separated Noise Kernel for the Reissner Nordström metric. The Noise Kernel defines the fluctuations of the quantum stress tensor and is of central importance to Semiclassical Stochastic Gravity. The metric is modeled as gravitationally collapsing spacetime, by using suitable coordinate transformations, defined earlier. The fluctuations of the quantum stress tensor, at the final stage of collapse are then analysed for both, the naked singularity and black hole end states. The behavior of this Noise Kernel, at the Cauchy Horizon for naked singularity shows markedly different behavi…
We show that the pathology which afflicts the Hartle-Hawking vacuum on the Kerr black hole space-time can be regarded as due to rigid rotation of the state with the horizon in the sense that when the region outside the speed-of-light surface is removed by introducing a mirror, there is a state with the defining features of the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. In addition, we show that when the field is in this state, the expectation value of the energy-momentum stress tensor measured by an observer close to the horizon and rigidly rotating with it corresponds to that of a thermal distribution at the Haw…
We illustrate that regular black holes and horizonless stars, typically considered as quite distinct families of black hole mimickers, are intimately intertwined. We show that any spherically symmetric regular black hole can be continuously deformed into a horizonless star under the mild conditions of non-negativity of gravitational energy (Misner--Sharp quasi-local mass), and an assumed linear relation between the latter and the Arnowitt--Deser--Misner (ADM) mass. We illustrate this general result by considering the family of geometries proposed by Hayward as the description of regular black …
The effective action associated with the trace anomaly provides a general algorithm for approximating the expectation value of the stress tensor of conformal matter fields in arbitrary curved spacetimes. In static, spherically symmetric spacetimes, the algorithm involves solving a fourth order linear differential equation in the radial coordinate r for the two scalar auxiliary fields appearing in the anomaly action, and its corresponding stress tensor. By appropriate choice of the homogeneous solutions of the auxiliary field equations, we show that it is possible to obtain finite stress tensor…
The strong cosmic censorship conjecture proposes that starting from generic initial data on some Cauchy surface, the solutions of the Einstein equation should not be extendable across the boundary of the domain of dependence of that surface. For the case of the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter spacetime this means that any perturbation should blow up sufficiently badly when approaching this boundary, called the Cauchy horizon. However, recent results indicate that for highly charged black holes classical scalar perturbations allow for a violation of strong cosmic censorship. In a recent paper arXi…
Among the different methods to derive particle creation, finding the quantum stress tensor expectation value gives a covariant quantity which can be used for examining the back-reaction issue. However this tensor also includes vacuum polarization in a way that depends on the vacuum chosen. Here we review different aspects of particle creation by looking at energy conservation and at the quantum stress tensor. It will be shown that in the case of general spherically symmetric black holes that have a \emph{dynamical horizon}, as occurs in a cosmological context, one cannot have pair creation on …
We perform the point-splitting regularization on the vacuum stress tensor of a coupling scalar field in de Sitter space under the guidance from the adiabatically regularized Green's function. For the massive scalar field with the minimal coupling $ξ=0$, the 2nd order point-splitting regularization yields a finite vacuum stress tensor with a positive, constant energy density, which can be identified as the cosmological constant that drives de Sitter inflation. For the coupling $ξ\ne 0$, we find that, even if the regularized Green's function is continuous, UV and IR convergent, the point-splitti…
We consider the quantum stress-energy tensor of a massless scalar field near the Cauchy horizon interior to the Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. We construct the quantum state by considering the two-point function on a negative definite metric obtained by a double analytic continuation from the Lorentzian manifold, complexifying both the $t$ and polar coordinates. We enforce periodicity in the Euclideanized $t$ coordinate with periodicity equal to the reciprocal of the temperature of the Cauchy horizon, a necessary condition for avoiding a conical singularity at the inner horizon. We s…
Calculations of the inner mass function of the Hayward regular black hole with fluxes are reviewed and rederived. We present detailed calculations of the inner mass function in two forms of the Ori approach (the ingoing flux is continuous, the outgoing flux is modeled by a thin null shell) and compare them with calculations in Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. A formal reason of different results is discussed. The energy density of scalar perturbations propagating from the event horizon into the Hayward black hole measured by a free falling observer near the inner horizon is calculated.
We investigate the following question: Consider a small mass, with $ε$ (the ratio of the Schwarzschild radius and the bulk curvature length) much smaller than 1, that is confined to the TeV brane in the Randall-Sundrum I scenario. Does it form a black hole with a regular horizon, or a naked singularity? The metric is expanded in $ε$ and the asymptotic form of the metric is given by the weak field approximation (linear in the mass). In first order of $ε$ we show that the iteration of the weak field solution, which includes only integer powers of the mass, leads to a solution that has a singular…
We use the image sum method to reproduce Sushkov's result that for a massless automorphic field on the initial globally hyperbolic region $IGH$ of Misner space, one can always find a special value of the automorphic parameter $α$ such that the renormalized expectation value $\langleα|T_{ab}|α\rangle$ in the {\it Sushkov state} ``$\langleα|\cdot|α\rangle$'' (i.e. the automorphic generalization of the Hiscock-Konkowski state) vanishes. However, we shall prove by elementary methods that the conclusions of a recent general theorem of Kay-Radzikowski-Wald apply in this case. I.e. for any value of $…
We consider the Hawking-Ellis (Segre-Plebanski) classification of stress-energy tensors, both in the test-field limit, and in the presence of back-reaction governed by the usual Einstein equations. For test fields it is not too difficult to get a type~IV stress-energy via quantum vacuum polarization effects. (For example, consider the Unruh quantum vacuum state for a massless scalar field in the Schwarzschild background.) However, in the presence of back-reaction driven by the ordinary Einstein equations the situation is often much more constrained. For instance: (1) in any static spacetime th…
Despite the finiteness of stress tensor for a scalar field on the four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in the Israel-Hartle-Hawking vacuum, the Tolman temperature in thermal equilibrium is certainly divergent on the horizon due to the infinite blueshift of the Hawking temperature. The origin of this conflict is due to the fact that the conventional Tolman temperature was based on the assumption of a traceless stress tensor, which is, however, incompatible with the presence of the trace anomaly responsible for the Hawking radiation. Here, we present an effective Tolman temperature which is…
Non-singular black hole geometries typically come with two spacetime horizons: an (outer) event horizon and an (inner) Cauchy horizon. This nurtures the speculation that they may be subject to a mass-inflation effect which renders the Cauchy horizon unstable. We analyze the dynamics associated with spherically symmetric, regular black holes taking the full backreaction between the infalling matter and geometry into account. On this basis, we identify the crucial features taming the growth of the mass function and diminishing the curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon. It is demonstrated e…
The destruction of a regular black hole event horizon might provide us the possibility to access regions inside black hole event horizon. This paper investigates the possibility of overcharging a charged Taub-NUT regular black hole via the scattering of a charged field and the absorption of a charged particle. For the charged scalar field scattering, both the near-extremal and extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black holes cannot be overcharged. For the test charged particle absorption, the result shows that the event horizon of the extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black hole still exists whil…
Following a previous work on the quantization of a massless scalar field in a spacetime representing the head on collision of two plane waves which fucus into a Killing-Cauchy horizon, we compute the renormalized expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of the quantum field near that horizon in the physical state which corresponds to the Minkowski vacuum before the collision of the waves. It is found that for minimally coupled and conformally coupled scalar fields the respective stress-energy tensors are unbounded in the horizon. The specific form of the divergences suggests that when the…
We assumed a stress tensor is necessary on the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole or on the Rindler horizon for the Israel matching conditions to be satisfied. We found the surface energy density $ρ_{s}$ is vanishing but the surface pressure $p_{s}$ equals $1/16πl$ in both cases, where $l$ is the proper distance from the horizon. The junction relations are applied both for $r =$ const. and $T =$ const. surfaces, with the same results for the surface parameters $ρ_{s}$ and $p_{s}$. We emphasize the nonstatic feature of the spacetimes beyond the corresponding horizons.
The recently-conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence posits a field theory dual to dynamics in the near-horizon region of an extreme Kerr black hole with certain boundary conditions. We construct a boundary stress tensor for this theory via covariant phase space techniques. The structure of the stress tensor indicates that any dual theory is a discrete light cone quantum theory, in agreement with recent arguments by Balasubramanian et al. The key technical step in our construction is the addition of an appropriate counter-term to the symplectic structure, which is necessary to make the theory full…
We consider a way to avoid black hole singularities by gluing a black hole exterior to an interior with a tube-like geometry consisting of a direct product of two-dimensional AdS, dS, or Rindler spacetime with a two-sphere of constant radius. As a result we obtain a spacetime with either "cosmological" or "acceleration" (event) horizons but without an apparent horizon. The inner region is everywhere regular and supported by matter with the vacuum-like equation of state $p_{r}+ρ=0$ where $p_{r}=T_{r}^{r}$ is the longitudinal pressure, $ρ=-T_{0}^{0}$ is the energy density, $T_μ^ν$ is the stress-…
We derive constraints on the form of the renormalized stress tensor for states on Kerr space-time based on general physical principles: symmetry, the conservation equations, the trace anomaly and regularity on (sections of) the event horizon. This is then applied to the physical vacua of interest. We introduce the concept of past and future Boulware vacua and discuss the non-existence of a state empty at both scri- and scri+. By calculating the stress tensor for the Unruh vacuum at the event horizon and at infinity, we are able to check our earlier conditions. We also discuss the difficulties …
Recently, Li and Bambi proposed a hypothesis that the event horizon of a regular black hole can be destroyed because these objects have no gravitational singularity and therefore they are not protected by the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC). In this paper, to test their hypothesis, we perform the new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald to overcharge a near extremal static electrically regular black hole. After introducing the stability condition of the spacetime and the null energy condition of matter fields, we derive the first-order and second-order pertur…
Penrose's singularity theorem implies that if a trapped region forms in a gravitational collapse, then a singularity must form as well within such region. However, it is widely expected that singularities should be generically avoided by quantum gravitational effects. Here we shall explore both the minimum requirements to avoid singularities in a gravitational collapse as well as discuss, without relying on a specific quantum gravity model, the possible regular spacetimes associated to such regularization of the spacetime fabric. In particular, we shall expose the intimate and quite subtle rel…
We review a few rigorous and partly unpublished results on the regularisation of the stress-energy in quantum field theory on curved spacetimes: 1) the symmetry of the Hadamard/Seeley-DeWitt coefficients in smooth Riemannian and Lorentzian spacetimes 2) the equivalence of the local $ζ$-function and the Hadamard-point-splitting procedure in smooth static spacetimes 3) the equivalence of the DeWitt-Schwinger- and the Hadamard-point-splitting procedure in smooth Riemannian and Lorentzian spacetimes.
An anisotropic fluid with a negative radial pressure $p = - ρ$ is supposed to exist near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. The constant energy density $ρ$ depends only on the black hole mass. The radial acceleration of the static observers is constant but its modulus has exactly the Rindler form, as was recently suggested by Dahia and Felix da Silva. The structure of the stress tensor is similar with that obtained previously for the interior region of a black hole, excepting the time dependence.
In a recent work on the quantization of a massless scalar field in a particular colliding plane wave space-time, we computed the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor on the physical state which corresponds to the Minkowski vacuum before the collision of the waves. We did such a calculation in a region close to both the Killing-Cauchy horizon and the folding singularities that such a space-time contains. In the present paper, we give a suitable approximation procedure to compute this expectation value, in the conformal coupling case, throughout the causal past of the center of t…
We use the causal horizon entropy to study the asymptotic behaviors of regular AdS black holes. In some literature, the causal horizon entropy is regarded as a generalized holographic $c$-function. In this paper, we apply this idea to the case of regular AdS black holes. We show that the causal horizon entropy decreases to zero at the center of regular AdS black holes and in particular it is stationary because its derivative with respect to the affine parameter approaches zero asymptotically. Meanwhile, the asymptotic behavior of the metric of regular AdS black holes implies that the black hol…
The expectation value of the stress-energy tensor $\langleT_{μν}\rangle$ of a free conformally invariant scalar field is computed in a general static two-dimensional black hole spacetime when the field is in either a zero temperature vacuum state or a thermal state at a nonzero temperature. It is found that for every static two-dimensional black hole the stress-energy diverges strongly on the event horizon unless the field is in a state at the natural black hole temperature which is defined by the surface gravity of the event horizon. This implies that both extreme and nonextreme two-dimension…
We present novel analytical solutions for linear-order gravitational waves or tensor perturbations in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe containing two perfect fluids, radiation and pressureless dust, and allowing for neutrino anisotropic stress. One of the results is applicable to any sub-horizon gravitational wave in such a universe. Another result is applicable to gravitational waves of primordial origin, for example produced during inflation, and works both before and after they cross the horizon. These results improve on analytical approximations previously set out in the literatu…
