The general form of the surface stress tensor of an infinitesimally thin shell located on a rotating null horizon is derived, when different interior and exterior geometries are joined there. Although the induced metric on the surface must be the same approached from either side, the first derivatives of the metric need not be. Such discontinuities lead to a Dirac $δ$-distribution in the Einstein tensor localized on the horizon. For a general stationary axisymmetric geometry the surface stress tensor can be expressed in terms of two geometric invariants that characterize the surface, namely the discontinuities $[κ]$ and $[\cal J]$ of the surface gravity $κ$ and angular momentum density $\cal J$. The Komar energy and angular momentum are given in coordinates adapted to the Killing symmetries, and the surface contributions to each determined in terms of $[κ]$ and $[\cal J]$. Guided by these, a simple modification of the original Israel junction conditions is verified directly from the Einstein tensor density to give the correct finite result for the surface stress, when the normal $\boldsymbol n$ to the surface is allowed to tend continuously to a null vector. The relation to Israel's original junction conditions, which fail on null surfaces, is given. The modified junction conditions are suitable to the matching of a rotating `black hole' exterior to any interior geometry joined at the Kerr null horizon surface, even when the surface normal is itself discontinuous and the Barrabès-Israel formalism is also inapplicable. This joining on a rotating null horizon is purely of the matter shell type and does not contain a propagating gravitational shock wave.
The stress-energy tensor of a matter shell whose history coincides with a null hypersurface in the Einstein-Cartan gravity is revisited. It is demonstrated that with a proper choice for the torsion discontinuity taken to be orthogonal to the null hypersurface and consistent with the antisymmetric property of torsion tensor, the modified expression for the asymmetric stress-energy tensor is automatically tangent to the hypersurface. The main differences with respect to a previous work are addressed
We analyze junction conditions at a null or non-null hypersurface $Σ$ in a large class of scalar-tensor theories in arbitrary $n(\ge 3)$ dimensions. After showing that the metric and a scalar field must be continuous at $Σ$ as the first junction conditions, we derive the second junctions conditions from the Einstein equations and the equation of motion for the scalar field. Subsequently, we study $C^1$ regular matching conditions as well as vacuum conditions at $Σ$ both in the Jordan and Einstein frames. Our result suggests that the following configurations may be possible; (i) a vacuum thin-s…
A method is presented which allows for the numerical computation of the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless minimally coupled scalar field in the region outside the event horizon of a 4D Schwarzschild black hole that forms from the collapse of a null shell. This method involves taking the difference between the stress-energy tensor for the in state in the collapsing null shell spacetime and that for the Unruh state in Schwarzschild spacetime. The construction of the modes for the in vacuum state and the Unruh state is discussed. Applying the method, the renormalized stress-energy ten…
Using the Brown-York prescription for the definition of quasilocal gravitational energy-momentum tensor on a boundary and also complete canonical structure on a null boundary which has been found recently \cite{Aghapour:2018icu}, we propose a similar stress tensor on the null boundary. Then we exploit this stress tensor to compute the quasi-local energy and angular momentum for some well-known gravitational solutions. We have found that in addition to reference spacetime method for regularizing total energy, in the case of null boundary we can add a possible counterterm so avoiding embedding d…
Recently, Larry Ford and Tom Roman have discovered that in a flat cylindrical space, although the stress-energy tensor itself fails to satisfy the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) along the (non-achronal) null geodesics, when the ``Casimir-vacuum" contribution is subtracted from the stress-energy the resulting tensor does satisfy the ANEC inequality. Ford and Roman name this class of constraints on the quantum stress-energy tensor ``difference inequalities." Here I give a proof of the difference inequality for a minimally coupled massless scalar field in an arbitrary two-dimensional space…
Solutions to the mode equation for a quantized massless scalar field outside a black hole that forms from the collapse of a null shell: Late-time behaviors and computation of the stress-energy tensor
For the quantised, massless, minimally coupled real scalar field in four-dimensional Minkowski space, we show (by an explicit construction) that weighted averages of the null-contracted stress-energy tensor along null geodesics are unbounded from below on the class of Hadamard states. Thus there are no quantum inequalities along null geodesics in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. This is in contrast to the case for two-dimensional flat spacetime, where such inequalities do exist. We discuss in detail the properties of the quantum states used in our analysis, and also show that the renormal…
We consider a situation in which two metrics are joined at a null hypersurface. It often occurs that the union of the two metrics gives rise to a Ricci tensor that contains a term proportional to a Dirac delta-function supported on the hypersurface. This singularity is associated with a thin distribution of matter on the hypersurface, and following Barrabes and Israel, we seek to determine its stress-energy tensor in terms of the geometric properties of the null hypersurface. While our treatment here does not deviate strongly from their previous work, it offers a simplification of the computat…
The Brown-York stress tensor provides a means for defining quasilocal gravitational charges in subregions bounded by a timelike hypersurface. We consider the generalization of this stress tensor to null hypersurfaces. Such a stress tensor can be derived from the on-shell subregion action of general relativity associated with a Dirichlet variational principle, which fixes an induced Carroll structure on the null boundary. The formula for the mixed-index tensor $T{}^i{}_j$ takes a remarkably simple form that is manifestly independent of the choice of auxiliary null vector at the null surface, an…
A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy …
Both electromagnetic shock-waves and gravitational waves propagate with the speed of light. If they carry significant energy-momentum, this will change the properties of the space-time they propagate through. This can be described in terms of the junction conditions between space-time regions separated by a singular, null hypersurface. We derived generic junction conditions for Brans-Dicke theory in the Jordan frame, exploring a formalism based on a transverse vector, rather than normal, which can be applied to any type of hypersurfaces. In the particular case of a non-null hypersurface we obt…
We study imbedded hypersurfaces in spacetime whose causal character is allowed to change from point to point. Inherited geometrical structures on these hypersurfaces are defined by two methods: first, the standard rigged connection induced by a rigging vector (a vector not tangent to the hypersurface anywhere); and a second, more physically adapted, where each observer in spacetime induces a new type of connection that we call the rigged metric connection. The generalisation of the Gauss and Codazzi equations are also given. With the above machinery, we attack the problem of matching two space…
We work out the junction conditions for the Palatini $f(\mathcal{R},T)$ extension of General Relativity, where $f$ is an arbitrary function of the curvature scalar $\mathcal{R}$ of an independent connection, and of the trace $T$ of the stress-energy tensor of the matter fields. We find such conditions on the allowed discontinuities of several geometrical and matter quantities, some of which depart from their metric counterparts, and in turn extend their Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ versions via some new $T$-dependent terms. Moreover, we also identify some "exceptional cases" of $f(\mathcal{R},T)$…
In this work we derive the junction conditions for the matching between two spacetimes at a separation hypersurface in the perfect-fluid version of $f\left(R,T\right)$ gravity, not only in the usual geometrical representation but also in a dynamically equivalent scalar-tensor representation. We start with the general case in which a thin-shell separates the two spacetimes at the separation hypersurface, for which the general junction conditions are deduced, and the particular case for smooth matching is considered when the stress-energy tensor of the thin-shell vanishes. The set of junction co…
We consider the effective stress-energy tensors for the foreground and background sectors in ghost-free bimetric gravity. By considering the symmetries of the theory, we show that the foreground and background null energy conditions (NECs) are strongly anti-correlated. In particular, the NECs can only be simultaneously fulfilled when they saturate, corresponding to foreground and background cosmological constants. In all other situations, either the foreground or the background is subject to a NEC-violating contribution to the total stress-energy.
In a recent approach in modelling a radiating relativistic star undergoing gravitational collapse the role of the Weyl stresses was emphasised. It is possible to generate a model which is physically reasonable by approximately solving the junction conditions at the boundary of the star. In this paper we demonstrate that it is possible to solve the Einstein field equations and the junction conditions exactly. This exact solution contains the Friedmann dust solution as a limiting case. We briefly consider the radiative transfer within the framework of extended irreversible thermodynamics and sho…
The Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) states that the integral along a complete null geodesic of the projection of the stress-energy tensor onto the tangent vector to the geodesic cannot be negative. Exotic spacetimes, such as those allow wormholes or the construction of time machines are possible in general relativity only if ANEC is violated along achronal geodesics. Starting from a conjecture that flat-space quantum inequalities apply with small corrections in spacetimes with small curvature, we prove that ANEC is obeyed by a minimally-coupled, free quantum scalar field on any achronal …
We match an interior solution of a spherically symmetric traversable wormhole to a unique exterior vacuum solution, with a generic cosmological constant, at a junction interface, and the surface stresses on the thin shell are deduced. In the spirit of minimizing the usage of exotic matter we determine regions in which the weak and null energy conditions are satisfied on the junction surface. The characteristics and several physical properties of the surface stresses are explored, namely, regions where the sign of the tangential surface pressure is positive and negative (surface tension) are de…
Firstly, we review the pointwise and averaged energy conditions, the quantum inequality and the notion of the ``volume integral quantifier'', which provides a measure of the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter. Secondly, we present a specific metric of a spherically symmetric traversable wormhole in the presence of a generic cosmological constant, verifying that the null and the averaged null energy conditions are violated, as was to be expected. Thirdly, a pressureless dust shell is constructed around the interior wormhole spacetime by matching the latter geometry to a uniqu…
We discuss junction conditions across null hypersurfaces in a class of scalar-tensor gravity theories with i) second order dynamics, ii) obeying the recent constraints imposed by gravitational wave propagation, and iii) allowing for a cosmologically viable evolution. These requirements select kinetic gravity braiding models with linear kinetic term dependence and scalar field-dependent coupling to curvature. We explore a pseudo-orthonormal tetrad and its allowed gauge fixing, with one null vector standing as the normal, the other being transversal to the hypersurface. We derive a generalizatio…
Extending the study of spherically symmetric metrics satisfying the dominant energy condition and exhibiting singularities of power-law type initiated in SI93, we identify two classes of peculiar interest: focusing timelike singularity solutions with the stress-energy tensor of a radiative perfect fluid (equation of state: $p={1\over 3} ρ$) and a set of null singularity classes verifying identical properties. We consider two important applications of these results: to cosmology, as regards the possibility of solving the horizon problem with no need to resort to any inflationary scenario, and t…
We work out the junction conditions for $f(R)$ gravity formulated in metric-affine (Palatini) spaces using a tensor distributional approach. These conditions are needed for building consistent models of gravitating bodies with an interior and exterior regions matched at some hypersurface. Some of these conditions depart from the standard Darmois-Israel ones of General Relativity and from their metric $f(R)$ counterparts. In particular, we find that the trace of the stress-energy momentum tensor in the bulk must be continuous across the matching hypersurface, though its normal derivative need n…
We investigate a stress-energy tensor for a CFT at strong coupling inside a small five-dimensional rotating Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta by using the holographic method. As a gravitational dual, we perturbatively construct a black droplet solution by applying the "derivative expansion" method, generalizing the work of Haddad (arXiv:1207.2305), and analytically compute the holographic stress-energy tensor for our solution. We find that the stress-energy tensor is finite at both the future and past outer (event) horizons, and that the energy density is negative just outside …
Exact solutions describing the spherical collapse of null fluids can contain regions which violate the energy conditions. Physically the violations occur when the infalling matter continues to move inwards even when non-gravitational repulsive forces become stronger than gravity. In 1991 Ori proposed a resolution for these violations: spacetime surgery should be used to replace the energy condition violating region with an outgoing solution. The matter bounces. We revisit and implement this proposal for the more general Husain null fluids including a careful study of potential discontinuities …
We assumed a stress tensor is necessary on the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole or on the Rindler horizon for the Israel matching conditions to be satisfied. We found the surface energy density $ρ_{s}$ is vanishing but the surface pressure $p_{s}$ equals $1/16πl$ in both cases, where $l$ is the proper distance from the horizon. The junction relations are applied both for $r =$ const. and $T =$ const. surfaces, with the same results for the surface parameters $ρ_{s}$ and $p_{s}$. We emphasize the nonstatic feature of the spacetimes beyond the corresponding horizons.
To gain more insights about what could be the source of the Alcubierre warp drive, a technique designed to find an orthogonal basis from the metric expression is used. It is deduced that exotic fluids can produce the same stress-energy tensor as the Alcubierre warp drive. For different configurations of warp acceleration and velocity, constraints on density, pressure, total positive mass, total negative mass, absolute value of the equation of state as well as null-energy condition violation are provided. The Alcubierre warp drive Einstein tensor expression and the optimization of fluid propert…
Wormhole and time machine are very interesting objects in general relativity. However, they need exotic matters which are impossible in classical level to support them. But if we introduce the quantum effects of gravity into the stress-energy tensor, these peculiar objects can be constructed self-consistently. Fortunately, loop quantum cosmology (LQC) has the potential to serve as a bridge connecting the classical theory and quantum gravity. Therefore it provides a simple way for the study of quantum effect in the semiclassical case. As is well known, loop quantum cosmology is very successful …
The averaged null energy condition has known violations for quantum fields in curved space, even if one considers only achronal geodesics. Many such examples involve rapid variation in the stress-energy tensor in the vicinity of the geodesic under consideration, giving rise to the possibility that averaging in additional dimensions would yield a principle universally obeyed by quantum fields. However, after discussing various procedures for additional averaging, including integrating over all dimensions of the manifold, we give a class of examples that violate any such averaged condition.
It was argued in literature that traversable wormholes can exist with arbitrarily small violation of null energy conditions. We show that if the amount of exotic material near the wormhole throat tends to zero, either this leads to a horn instead of a wormhole or the throat approaches the horizon in such a way that infnitely large stresses develop on the throat.
We report here on a new method for calculating the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) in black-hole (BH) spacetimes, which should also be applicable to dynamical BHs and to spinning BHs. This new method only requires the spacetime to admit a single symmetry. So far we developed three variants of the method, aimed for stationary, spherically symmetric, or axially symmetric BHs. We used this method to calculate the RSET of a minimally-coupled massless scalar field in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom backgrounds, for several quantum states. We present here the results for the RSET in th…
The junction conditions for General Relativity in the presence of domain walls with intrinsic spin are derived in three and higher dimensions. A stress tensor and a spin current can be defined just by requiring the existence of a well defined volume element instead of an induced metric, so as to allow for generic torsion sources. In general, when the torsion is localized on the domain wall, it is necessary to relax the continuity of the tangential components of the vielbein. In fact it is found that the spin current is proportional to the jump in the vielbein and the stress-energy tensor is pr…
It has been known for several decades that Einstein's field equations, when projected onto a null surface, exhibits a structure very similar to non-relativistic Navier-Stokes equation. I show that this result arises quite naturally when gravitational dynamics is viewed as an emergent phenomenon. Extremising the spacetime entropy density associated with the null surfaces leads to a set of equations which, when viewed in the local inertial frame, becomes identical to the Navier-Stokes (NS) equation. This is in contrast with the usual description of Damour-Navier-Stokes (DNS) equation in a genera…
Quantum inequalities are constraints on how negative the weighted average of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field can be. A null-projected quantum inequality can be used to prove the averaged null energy condition (ANEC), which would then rule out exotic phenomena such as wormholes and time machines. In this work we derive such an inequality for a massless minimally coupled scalar field, working to first order of the Riemann tensor and its derivatives. We then use this inequality to prove ANEC on achronal geodesics in a curved background that obeys the null convergence cond…
This paper develops a theory of thin shells within the context of the Einstein-Cartan theory by extending the known formalism of general relativity. In order to perform such an extension, we require the general non symmetric stress-energy tensor to be conserved leading, as Cartan pointed out himself, to a strong constraint relating curvature and torsion of spacetime. When we restrict ourselves to the class of space-times satisfying this constraint, we are able to properly describe thin shells and derive the general expression of surface stress-energy tensor both in its four-dimensional and in …
The Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) states that the integral along a complete null geodesic of the projection of the stress-energy tensor onto the tangent vector to the geodesic cannot be negative. ANEC can be used to rule out spacetimes with exotic phenomena, such as closed timelike curves, superluminal travel and wormholes. We prove that ANEC is obeyed by a minimally-coupled, free quantum scalar field on any achronal null geodesic (not two points can be connected with a timelike curve) surrounded by a tubular neighborhood whose curvature is produced by a classical source. To prove ANEC…
The averaged null energy condition (ANEC) requires that the integral over a complete null geodesic of the stress-energy tensor projected onto the geodesic tangent vector is never negative. This condition is sufficient to prove many important theorems in general relativity, but it is violated by quantum fields in curved spacetime. However there is a weaker condition, which is free of known violations, requiring only that there is no self-consistent space-time in semiclassical gravity in which ANEC is violated on a complete, {\em achronal} null geodesic. We indicate why such a condition might be…
We consider the properties of stress-energy tensors compatible with a Null Big Bang, i.e., cosmological evolution starting from a Killing horizon rather than a singularity. For Kantowski-Sachs cosmologies, it is shown that if matter satisfies the Null Energy Condition (NEC), then (i) regular cosmological evolution can only start from a Killing horizon, (ii) matter is absent at the horizon, and (iii) matter can only appear in the cosmological region due to interaction with vacuum. The latter is understood phenomenologically as a fluid whose stress tensor is insensitive to boosts in a particular…
In this paper, we describe an extremely efficient method for computing the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum scalar field in spherically-symmetric black hole spacetimes. The method applies to a scalar field with arbitrary field parameters. We demonstrate the utility of the method by computing the renormalized stress-energy tensor for a scalar field in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime, applying our results to discuss the null energy condition and the semi-classical backreaction.
The covariant Hamiltonian formulation for general relativity is studied in terms of self-dual variables on a manifold with an internal and lightlike boundary. At this inner boundary, new canonical variables appear: a spinor and a spinor-valued two-form that encode the entire intrinsic geometry of the null surface. At a two-dimensional cross-section of the boundary, quasi-local expressions for the generators of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms, time translations, and dilatations of the null normal are introduced and written in terms of the new boundary variables. In addition, a generalisation of…
We consider the familiar junction conditions described by Israel for thin timelike walls in Einstein-Hilbert gravity. One such condition requires the induced metric to be continuous across the wall. Now, there are many spacetimes with sources confined to a thin wall for which this condition is violated and the Israel formalism does not apply. However, we explore the conjecture that the induced metric is in fact continuous for any thin wall which models spacetimes containing only positive energy matter. Thus, the usual junction conditions would hold for all positive energy spacetimes. This conj…
We use the subleading soft-graviton theorem to construct an operator $T_{zz}$ whose insertion in the four-dimensional tree-level quantum gravity $\mathcal{S}$-matrix obeys the Virasoro-Ward identities of the energy momentum tensor of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT$_2$). The celestial sphere at Minkowskian null infinity plays the role of the Euclidean sphere of the CFT$_2$, with the Lorentz group acting as the unbroken $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ subgroup.
Modes emerging out of a collapsing black hole are red-shifted to such an extent that Hawking radiation at future null infinity consists of modes that have energies beyond the Planck scale at past null infinity. This indicates that physics at the Planck scale may modify the spectrum of Hawking radiation and the associated stress-energy tensor of the quantum field. Recently, it has been shown that, the T-duality symmetry of string fluctuations along compact extra dimensions leads to a modification of the standard propagator of point particles in quantum field theory. At low energies (when compar…
The inspiral of binary systems in vacuum is controlled by the stress-energy of gravitational radiation and any other propagating degrees of freedom. For gravitational waves, the dominant contribution is characterized by an effective stress-energy tensor at future null infinity. We employ perturbation theory and the short-wavelength approximation to compute this stress-energy tensor in a wide class of alternative theories. We find that this tensor is generally a modification of that first computed by Isaacson, where the corrections can dominate over the general relativistic term. In a wide clas…
The stress tensor for the quantized electromagnetic field is calculated in the region between a pair of dispersive, dielectric half-spaces. This generalizes the stress tensor for the Casimir energy to the case where the boundaries have finite reflectivity. We also include the effects of finite temperature. This allows us to discuss the circumstances under which the weak energy condition and the null energy condition can be violated in the presence of finite reflectivity and finite temperature.
We consider AdS gravity duals to CFT on background spacetimes with a null infinity. Null infinity on the conformal boundary may extend to an extremal horizon in the bulk. For example it does so for Poincare-AdS, although does not for planar Schwarzschild-AdS. If null infinity does extend into an extremal horizon in the bulk, we show that the bulk near-horizon geometry is determined by the geometry of the boundary null infinity. Hence the `infra-red' geometry of the bulk is fixed by the large scale behaviour of the CFT spacetime. In addition the boundary stress tensor must have a particular dec…
We show analytically that the vacuum electromagnetic stress-energy tensor outside a ball with constant dielectric constant and permeability always obeys the weak, null, dominant, and strong energy conditions. There are still no known examples in quantum field theory in which the averaged null energy condition in flat spacetime is violated.
Taking the Randall-Sundrum models as background scenario, we derive generalized Israel-Lanczos-Sen thin-shell junction conditions for systems in which several bulk scalar fields are non-minimally coupled to gravity. We demonstrate that the form of the junction conditions (though arguably not the physics) depends on the choice of frame. We show that generally (in any frame except the Einstein frame) the presence of a thin shell induces discontinuities in the normal derivative of the scalar field, even in the absence of any direct interaction between the thin shell and the scalar field. For some…
We construct solutions of plane symmetric wormholes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant by matching an interior spacetime to the exterior anti-de Sitter vacuum solution. The spatial topology of this plane symmetric wormhole can be planar, cylindrical and toroidal. As usual the null energy condition is necessarily violated at the throat. At the junction surface, the surface stresses are determined. By expressing the tangential surface pressure as a function of several parameters, namely, that of the matching radius, the radial derivative of the redshift function and of the surfa…
Building on a series of earlier papers [gr-qc/9604007, gr-qc/9604008, gr-qc/9604009], I investigate the various point-wise and averaged energy conditions in the Unruh vacuum. I consider the quantum stress-energy tensor corresponding to a conformally coupled massless scalar field, work in the test-field limit, restrict attention to the Schwarzschild geometry, and invoke a mixture of analytical and numerical techniques. I construct a semi-analytic model for the stress-energy tensor that globally reproduces all known numerical results to within 0.8%, and satisfies all known analytic features of t…
Conformally flat spacetimes with an elastic stress energy tensor given by a diagonal trace-free anisotropic pressure tensor are investigated using 1+3 formalism. We show how the null tetrad Ricci components are related to the pressure components and energy density. The 1+3 Bianchi and Jacobi identities and Einstein field equations are written for this particular case. In general the commutators must be considered since they supply potentially new information on higher order derivatives of the 1+3 quantities. We solve the system for the non rotating case which consist of ODEs of a spatial coord…
We examine the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) for a $2+1$-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) at strong coupling in the background of a wormhole spacetime by employing the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we numerically construct a novel $3+1$-dimensional vacuum AdS black hole solution with non-trivial topology, which is dual to a wormhole geometry connecting two flat universes. Although the bulk null energy condition (NEC) is not violated, the NEC for the holographic stress-energy tensor is violated near the wormhole throat. Next, we investigate the entanglement entropy for a half-sp…
The Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) requires that the average along a complete null geodesic of the projection of the stress-energy tensor onto the geodesic tangent vector can never be negative. It is sufficient to rule out many exotic phenomena in general relativity. Subject to certain conditions, we show that the ANEC can never be violated by a quantized minimally coupled free scalar field along a complete null geodesic surrounded by a tubular neighborhood in which the geometry is flat and whose intrinsic causal structure coincides with that induced from the full spacetime. In particul…
