For a coupled slow--fast FitzHugh--Nagumo(FHN) equation derived from a reaction-diffusion-mechanics (RDM) model, Holzer, Doelman and Kaper in 2013 studied existence and stability of the travelling pulse, which consists of two fast orbit arcs and two slow ones, where one fast segment passes the unique fold point with algebraic decreasing and two slow ones follow normally hyperbolic critical curve segments. Shen and Zhang in 2019 obtained existence of the travelling pulse, whose two fast orbit arcs both exponentially decrease, and one of the slow orbit arcs could be normally hyperbolic or not at the origin. Here we characterize both nonlinear and spectral stabilities of this travelling pulse.
The present paper is devoted to the existence of a random attractor for stochastic lattice FitzHugh-Nagumo system driven by $α$-stable Lévy noises under some dissipative conditions.
In this paper, we complete the global qualitative analysis of the well-known FitzHugh-Nagumo neuronal model. In particular, studying global limit cycle bifurcations and applying the Wintner-Perko termination principle for multiple limit cycles, we prove that the corresponding dynamical system has at most two limit cycles.
We characterize the values of the parameters for which a zero--Hopf equilibrium point takes place at the singular points, namely, $O$ (the origin), $P_+$ and $P_-$ in the FitzHugh-Nagumo system. Thus we find two $2$--parameter families of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system for which the equilibrium point at the origin is a zero-Hopf equilibrium. For these two families we prove the existence of a periodic orbit bifurcating from the zero--Hopf equilibrium point $O$. We prove that exist three $2$--parameter families of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system for which the equilibrium point at $P_+$ and $P_-$ is a zer…
We establish the existence and nonlinear stability of travelling pulse solutions for the discrete FitzHugh-Nagumo equation with infinite-range interactions close to the continuum limit. For the verification of the spectral properties, we need to study a functional differential equation of mixed type (MFDE) with unbounded shifts. We avoid the use of exponential dichotomies and phase spaces, by building on a technique developed by Bates, Chen and Chmaj for the discrete Nagumo equation. This allows us to transfer several crucial Fredholm properties from the PDE setting to our discrete setting.
The paper is devoted to the study of the dynamical behavior of the solutions of stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo lattice equations, driven by fractional Brownian motions, with Hurst parameter greater than $1/2$. Under some usual dissipativity conditions, the system considered here features different dynamics from the same one perturbed by Brownian motion. In our case, the random dynamical system has a unique random equilibrium, which constitutes a singleton sets random attractor.
It had been shown that the transition from a rigidly rotating spiral wave to a meandering spiral wave is via a Hopf bifurcation. Many studies have shown that these bifurcations are supercritical, but we present numerical studies which show that subcritical bifurcations are also present within FitzHugh-Nagumo. Furthermore, we present a evidence that this bifurcation is highly sensitive to initial conditions, and it is possible to convert one solution in the hysteresis loop to the other.
We analyse the dynamics of an array of $N^2$ identical cells coupled in the shape of a torus. Each cell is a 2-dimensional ordinary differential equation of FitzHugh-Nagumo type and the total system is $\mathbb{Z}_N\times\mathbb{Z}_N-$symmetric. The possible patterns of oscillation, compatible with the symmetry, are described. The types of patterns that effectively arise through Hopf bifurcation are shown to depend on the signs of the coupling constants, under conditions ensuring that the equations have only one equilibrium state.
Motivated by the dynamics of neuronal responses, we analyze the dynamics of the Fitzhugh-Nagumo slow-fast system with delayed self-coupling. This system provides a canonical example of a canard explosion for sufficiently small delays. Beyond this regime, delays significantly enrich the dynamics, leading to mixed-mode oscillations, bursting and chaos. These behaviors emerge from a delay-induced subcritical Bogdanov-Takens instability arising at the fold points of the S-shaped critical manifold. Underlying the transition from canard-induced to delay-induced dynamics is an abrupt switch in the na…
For two-dimensional autonomous linear incommensurate fractional-order dynamical systems with Caputo derivatives of different orders, necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the asymptotic stability and instability of the null solution. These conditions are expressed in terms of the elements of the system's matrix, as well as of the fractional orders of the Caputo derivatives, leading to a generalization of the well known Routh-Hurwitz conditions. These theoretical results are then used to investigate the stability properties of a two-dimensional fractional-order FitzHugh-Nagumo ne…
We establish the existence and nonlinear stability of travelling wave solutions for a class of lattice differential equations (LDEs) that includes the discrete FitzHugh-Nagumo system with alternating scale-separated diffusion coefficients. In particular, we view such systems as singular perturbations of spatially homogeneous LDEs, for which stable travelling wave solutions are known to exist in various settings. The two-periodic waves considered in this paper are described by singularly perturbed multi-component functional differential equations of mixed type (MFDEs). In order to analyze these…

The existence of a random attractor for the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo system defined on an unbounded domain is established. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the stochastic system is proved by uniform estimates on solutions for large space and time variables. These estimates are obtained by a cut-off technique.
This paper is devoted to pulse solutions in FitzHugh--Nagumo systems that are coupled parabolic equations with rapidly periodically oscillating coefficients. In the limit of vanishing periods, there arises a two-scale FitzHugh--Nagumo system, which qualitatively and quantitatively captures the dynamics of the original system. We prove existence and stability of pulses in the limit system and show their proximity on any finite time interval to pulse-like solutions of the original system.
In this paper, we provide a complete mathematical construction for a stochastic leaky-integrate-and-fire model (LIF) mimicking the interspike interval (ISI) statistics of a stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model (FHN) in the excitable regime, where the unique fixed point is stable. Under specific types of noises, we prove that there exists a global random attractor for the stochastic FHN system. The linearization method is then applied to estimate the firing time and to derive the associated radial equation representing a LIF equation. This result confirms the previous prediction in [Ditlevse…
In this paper, we use geometric singular perturbation theory and blowup, as our main technical tool, to study the mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) that occur in two coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo units with symmetric and repulsive coupling. In particular, we demonstrate that the MMOs in this model are not due to generic folded singularities, but rather due to singularities at a cusp -- not a fold -- of the critical manifold. Using blowup, we determine the number of SAOs analytically, showing -- as for the folded nodes -- that they are determined by the Weber equation and the ratio of eigenvalues. We al…
A relationship between Puiseux series satisfying an ordinary differential equation corresponding to a polynomial dynamical system and degrees of irreducible invariant algebraic curves is studied. A bound on the degrees of irreducible invariant algebraic curves for a wide class of polynomial dynamical systems is obtained. It is demonstrated that the Puiseux series near infinity can be used to find irreducible algebraic curves explicitly. As an example, all irreducible invariant algebraic curves for the famous FitzHugh-Nagumo system are obtained.
We focus on the long time behavior of complex networks of reaction-diffusion (RD) systems. We prove the existence of the global attractor and a $L^{\infty}$-bound for a network of $n$ RD systems with $d$ variables each. This allows us to prove the identical synchronization for general class of networks and establish the existence of a coupling strength threshold value that ensures such a synchronization. Then, we apply these results to some particular networks with different structures (i.e. different topologies) and perform numerical simulations. We found out theoretical and numerical heurist…
We study the dynamics of a low-dimensional system of coupled model neurons as a step towards understanding the vastly complex network of neurons in the brain. We analyze the bifurcation structure of a system of two model neurons with unidirectional coupling as a function of two physiologically relevant parameters: the external current input only to the first neuron and the strength of the coupling from the first to the second neuron. Leveraging a timescale separation, we prove necessary conditions for multiple timescale phenomena observed in the coupled system, including canard solutions and m…
The existence of a pullback attractor is established for the singularly perturbed FitzHugh-Nagumo system defined on the entire space $R^n$ when external terms are unbounded in a phase space. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the system is proved by using uniform a priori estimates for far-field values of solutions. Although the limiting system has no global attractor, we show that the pullback attractors for the perturbed system with bounded external terms are uniformly bounded, and hence do not blow up as a small parameter approaches zero.
In this paper, we prove the existences of pullback attractors in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for stochastic Fitzhugh-Nagumo system driven by both additive noises and deterministic non-autonomous forcings. The nonlinearity is polynomial like growth with exponent $p-1$. The asymptotic compactness for the cocycle in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is proved by using asymptotic a priori method, where the plus and minus signs of the nonlinearity at large value are not required.
In this paper, we characterize all the irreducible Darboux polynomials and polynomial first integrals of FitzHugh-Nagumo (F-N) system. The method of the weight homogeneous polynomials and the characteristic curves is widely used to give a complete classification of Darboux polynomials of a system. However, this method does not work for F-N system. Here by considering the Darboux polynomials of an assistant system associated to F-N system, we classified the invariant algebraic surfaces of F-N system. Our results show that there is no invariant algebraic surface of F-N system in the biological p…
The FitzHugh-Nagumo model describing propagation of nerve impulses in axon is given by fast-slow reaction-diffusion equations, with dependence on a parameter $ε$ representing the ratio of time scales. It is well known that for all sufficiently small $ε>0$ the system possesses a periodic traveling wave. With aid of computer-assisted rigorous computations, we prove the existence of this periodic orbit in the traveling wave equation for an explicit range $ε\in (0, 0.0015]$. Our approach is based on a novel method of combination of topological techniques of covering relations and isolating segment…
The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation has been investigated with a wide array of different methods in the last three decades. Recently a version of the equations with an applied current was analyzed by Champneys, Kirk, Knobloch, Oldeman and Sneyd using numerical continuation methods. They obtained a complicated bifurcation diagram in parameter space featuring a C-shaped curve of homoclinic bifurcations and a U-shaped curve of Hopf bifurcations. We use techniques from multiple time-scale dynamics to understand the structures of this bifurcation diagram based on geometric singular perturbation analysis o…
We discuss multichromatic front solutions to the bistable Nagumo lattice differential equation. Such fronts connect the stable spatially homogeneous equilibria with spatially heterogeneous $n$-periodic equilibria and hence are not monotonic like the standard monochromatic fronts. In contrast to the bichromatic case, our results show that these multichromatic fronts can disappear and reappear as the diffusion coefficient is increased. In addition, these multichromatic waves can travel in parameter regimes where the monochromatic fronts are also free to travel. This leads to intricate collision …
We use geometric singular perturbation techniques combined with an action functional approach to study traveling pulse solutions in a three-component FitzHugh--Nagumo model. First, we derive the profile of traveling $1$-pulse solutions with undetermined width and propagating speed. Next, we compute the associated action functional for this profile from which we derive the conditions for existence and a saddle-node bifurcation as the zeros of the action functional and its derivatives. We obtain the same conditions by using a different analytical approach that exploits the singular limit of the …
We study the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo equations, modelling the dynamics of neuronal action potentials, in parameter regimes characterised by mixed-mode oscillations. The interspike time interval is related to the random number of small-amplitude oscillations separating consecutive spikes. We prove that this number has an asymptotically geometric distribution, whose parameter is related to the principal eigenvalue of a substochastic Markov chain. We provide rigorous bounds on this eigenvalue in the small-noise regime, and derive an approximation of its dependence on the system's parameters fo…
We investigate the impact of spatial-temporal discretisation schemes on the dynamics of a class of reaction-diffusion equations that includes the FitzHugh-Nagumo system. For the temporal discretisation we consider the family of six backward differential formula (BDF) methods, which includes the well-known backward-Euler scheme. The spatial discretisations can feature infinite-range interactions, allowing us to consider neural field models. We construct travelling wave solutions to these fully discrete systems in the small time-step limit by viewing them as singular perturbations of the corresp…
In a previous paper we have proposed a new method for proving the existence of "canard solutions" for three and four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with only one fast variable which improves the methods used until now. The aim of this work is to extend this method to the case of four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems with two slow and two fast variables. This method enables to state a unique generic condition for the existence of "canard solutions" for such four-dimensional singularly perturbed systems which is based on the stability of folded singularities (pseudo singular po…
This article communicates results on regular depolarization cascades in periodically-kicked feedforward chains of excitable two-dimensional FitzHugh-Nagumo systems driven by sufficiently strong excitatory forcing at the front node. The study documents a parameter exploration by way of changes to the forcing period, upon which the dynamics undergoes a transition from simple depolarization to more complex behavior, including the emergence of mixed-mode oscillations. Both rigorous studies and careful numerical observations are presented. In particular, we provide rigorous proofs for existence and…
We study invasion fronts in the FitzHugh--Nagumo equation in the oscillatory regime using singular perturbation techniques. Phenomenologically, localized perturbations of the unstable steady-state grow and spread, creating temporal oscillations whose phase is modulated spatially. The phase modulation appears to be selected by an invasion front that describes the behavior in the leading edge of the spreading process. We construct these invasion fronts for large regions of parameter space using singular perturbation techniques. Key ingredients are the construction of periodic orbits, their unsta…
Since Noble adapted in 1962 the model of Hodgkin and Huxley to fit Purkinje fibres the refinement of models for cardiomyocytes has continued. Most of these models are high-dimensional systems of coupled equations so that the possible mathematical analysis is quite limited, even numerically. This has inspired the development of reduced, phenomenological models that preserve qualitatively the main featuture of cardiomyocyte's dynamics. In this paper we present a systematic comparison of the dynamics between two notable low-dimensional models, the FitzHugh-Nagumo model \cite{FitzHugh55, FitzHugh6…
The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation, which was derived as a simplification of the Hodgkin-Huxley model for nerve impulse propagation, has been extensively studied as a paradigmatic activator-inhibitor system. We consider the version of this system in which two agents diffuse at an equal rate. Using geometric singular perturbation theory, we prove the existence and stability of fast traveling pulses. The stability proof makes use of the Maslov index--an invariant of symplectic geometry--to count unstable eigenvalues for the linearization about the wave. The calculation of the Maslov index is carried o…
Stability of travelling waves for the Nagumo equation on the whole line is proven using a new approach via functional inequalities and an implicitely defined phase adaption. The approach can be carried over to obtain pathwise stability of travelling wave solutions in the case of the stochastic Nagumo equation as well. The noise term considered is of multiplicative type with variance proportional to the distance of the solution to the orbit of the travelling wave solutions.
Machine learning algorithms have been successfully used to approximate nonlinear maps under weak assumptions on the structure and properties of the maps. We present deep neural networks using dense and convolutional layers to solve an inverse problem, where we seek to estimate parameters of a FitzHugh-Nagumo model, which consists of a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We employ the neural networks to approximate reconstruction maps for model parameter estimation from observational data, where the data comes from the solution of the ODE and takes the form of a time ser…
In this article, we construct and analyse an explicit numerical splitting method for a class of semi-linear stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with additive noise, where the drift is allowed to grow polynomially and satisfies a global one-sided Lipschitz condition. The method is proved to be mean-square convergent of order 1 and to preserve important structural properties of the SDE. First, it is hypoelliptic in every iteration step. Second, it is geometrically ergodic and has an asymptotically bounded second moment. Third, it preserves oscillatory dynamics, such as amplitudes, frequenci…
In this work we propose a new model of 2D cellular neural networks (CNN) in terms of the lattice FitzHugh-Nagumo equations with boundary feedback and prove a threshold condition for the exponential synchronization of the entire neural network through the \emph{a priori} uniform estimates of solutions and the analysis of dissipative dynamics. The threshold to be satisfied by the gap signals between pairwise boundary cells of the network is expressed by the structural parameters and adjustable. The new result and method of this paper can also be generalized to 3D and higher dimensional FitzHugh-…
We discuss bichromatic (two-color) front solutions to the bistable Nagumo lattice differential equation. Such fronts connect the stable spatially homogeneous equilibria with spatially heterogeneous 2-periodic equilibria and hence are not monotonic like the standard monochromatic fronts. We provide explicit criteria that can determine whether or not these fronts are stationary and show that the bichromatic fronts can travel in parameter regimes where the monochromatic fronts are pinned. The presence of these bichromatic waves allows the two stable homogeneous equlibria to both spread out throug…
Many physical, chemical and biological systems have an inherent discrete spatial structure that strongly influences their dynamical behaviour. Similar remarks apply to internal or external noise, as well as to nonlocal coupling. In this paper we study the combined effect of nonlocal spatial discretization and stochastic perturbations on travelling waves in the Nagumo equation, which is a prototypical model for bistable reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs). We prove that under suitable parameter conditions, various discrete-stochastic variants of the Nagumo equation have sol…
The paper studies the excitability properties of a generalized FitzHugh-Nagumo model. The model differs from the purely competitive FitzHugh-Nagumo model in that it accounts for the effect of cooperative gating variables such as activation of calcium currents. Excitability is explored by unfolding a pitchfork bifurcation that is shown to organize five different types of excitability. In addition to the three classical types of neuronal excitability, two novel types are described and distinctly associated to the presence of cooperative variables.
We investigate the stability of traveling-pulse solutions to the stochastic FitzHughNagumo equations with additive noise. Special attention is given to the effect of small noise on the classical deterministically stable fast traveling pulse. Our method is based on adapting the velocity of the traveling wave by solving a scalar stochastic ordinary differential equation (SODE) and tracking perturbations to the wave meeting a system of a scalar stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) coupled to a scalar ordinary differential equation (ODE). This approach has been recently employed by Krüg…
