We discuss a novel window to probe the origin of our universe via the mass functions of primordial black holes (PBHs). The mass functions of PBHs are simply estimated using the conventional Press-Schechter formalism for two paradigms of cosmic origin, including inflationary $Λ$CDM and bounce cosmology. The standard inflationary $Λ$CDM model cannot generate an appreciable number of massive PBHs; however, non-trivial inflation models with blue-tilted power spectra at small scales and matter bounce cosmology provide formation mechanisms for heavy PBHs, which in turn, may seed the observed supermassive black holes (SMBHs). By fitting the SMBH mass functions at high redshift ($z \sim 6$) derived from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Canada-France High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS) quasars, for two paradigms of cosmic origin, we derive constraints on the PBH density fraction $f_{\mathrm{PBH}}$ at $z \sim 6$ and the characteristic mass $M_{\star}$, with the prior assumption that all SMBHs stem from PBHs. We demonstrate that this newly proposed procedure, relying on astronomical measurements that utilize deep-field surveys of SMBHs at high redshift, can be used to constrain models of cosmic origin. Additionally, although not the main focus of this paper, we evolve the mass function from $z\sim6$ to $z\sim0$ through an assumption of $3\times 10^8$-year Eddington's accretion, and give a rough estimation of $f_{\mathrm{PBH}}$ at $z \sim 0$.
A cosmological gauge field with isotropic stress-energy introduces parity violation into the behavior of gravitational waves. We show that a primordial spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves develops a preferred handedness, left- or right-circularly polarized, depending on the abundance and coupling of the gauge field during the radiation era. A modest abundance of the gauge field would induce parity-violating correlations of the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization patterns that could be detected by current and future experiments.
If primordial black holes (PBHs) form directly from inhomogeneities in the early Universe, then the number in the mass range $10^5 -10^{12}M_{\odot}$ is severely constrained by upper limits to the $μ$ distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This is because inhomogeneities on these scales will be dissipated by Silk damping in the redshift interval $5\times 10^4\lesssim z\lesssim2\times 10^6$. If the primordial fluctuations on a given mass scale have a Gaussian distribution and PBHs form on the high-$σ$ tail, as in the simplest scenarios, then the $μ$ constraints exclude PBHs in thi…
Recently, the cross-correlation between $E$- and $B$-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which is well explained by cosmic birefringence with rotation angle $β\approx 0.3$ deg, has been found in CMB polarization data. We carefully investigate the possibility of explaining the observed $EB$ correlation by the primordial chiral gravitational waves (CGWs), which can be generated in the parity-violating theories in the primordial Universe. We found that the CGWs scenario does not work due to the overproduction of the $BB$ auto-correlation which far exceeds the observed one …
We present a novel mechanism to generate the cosmic perturbation from evaporation of primordial black holes. A mass of a field is fluctuated if it is given by a vacuum expectation value of a light scalar field because of the quantum fluctuation during inflation. The fluctuated mass causes variations of the evaporation time of the primordial black holes. Therefore provided the primordial black holes dominate the universe when they evaporate, primordial cosmic perturbations are generated. We find that the amplitude of the large scale curvature perturbation generated in this scenario can be consi…
The observability of primordial cosmic fluctuations does not require a geometric horizon $H^{-1}$, which is exceeded temporarily by the wavelength of fluctuations. The primordial information can be protected against later thermal washout even if all relevant wavelengths remain smaller than $H^{-1}$. This is demonstrated by formulating the equations governing the cosmic fluctuations in a form that is manifestly invariant under conformal field transformations of the metric. Beyond the field equations this holds for the defining equation for the correlation function, as expressed by the inverse o…
The General Relativity affirms that any field is a source of gravitational field, thus one should affirm that the energy of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) generated primordial gravitational waves. The present article shows that a gravitational wave with dimensionless amplitude $\sim 10^{-5}$ and large wave length $\sim 10$ megaparsecs shifts temperature of CMB radiation about of a part in $10^{5}$.
The production of a primordial stochastic gravitational-wave background by processes occuring in the early Universe is expected in a broad range of models. Observing this background would open a unique window onto the Universe's evolutionary history. Probes like the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) or the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) can be used to set upper limits on the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density $Ω_{GW}$ for frequencies above $10^{-15}$ Hz. We perform a profile likelihood analysis of the Planck CMB temperature anisotropies and gravitational lensing data c…
Primordial magnetic fields will generate non-Gaussian signals in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as magnetic stresses and the temperature anisotropy they induce depend quadratically on the magnetic field. We compute a new measure of magnetic non-Gaussianity, the CMB trispectrum, on large angular scales, sourced via the Sachs-Wolfe effect. The trispectra induced by magnetic energy density and by magnetic scalar anisotropic stress are found to have typical magnitudes of approximately a few times 10^{-29} and 10^{-19}, respectively. Observational limits on CMB non-Gaussianity from WMAP data…
Primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) create a large squeezed-type non-Gaussianity in tensor perturbation, which generates non-Gaussian temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We for the first time derive an observational constraint on such a tensor non-Gaussianity from observed CMB maps. Analyzing temperature maps of the WMAP 7-year data, we find that such a tensor non-Gaussianity is consistent with zero. This gives an upper bound on PMF strength smoothed on $1 ~ {\rm Mpc}$ as $B_{1 ~ \rm Mpc} < 3.1 ~{\rm nG}$ at $95%$ C.L.
We investigate the co-evolution of dark matter (DM) density perturbation and metric perturbation in the WIMP paradigm. Instead of adopting the conventional assumption that DM starts out in thermal equilibrium, we propose a simple phase of DM production for the WIMP paradigm and extend our analysis to this phase. Being free from the envelop of thermal equilibrium, an amplified perturbative resonance between DM density perturbation and scalar modes of metric perturbation takes place during the DM production phase, and consequently results in a suppression of the tensor-to-scalar ratio of metric …
Non-Gaussianities of dynamical origin are disentangled from primordial ones using the formalism of large deviation statistics with spherical collapse dynamics. This is achieved by relying on accurate analytical predictions for the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) and the two-point clustering of spherically-averaged cosmic densities (sphere bias). Sphere bias extends the idea of halo bias to intermediate density environments and voids as underdense regions. In the presence of primordial non-Gaussianity, sphere bias displays a strong scale dependence relevant for both high and l…
It is shown that small-scale magnetic fields present before recombination induce baryonic density inhomogeneities of appreciable magnitude. The presence of such inhomogeneities changes the ionization history of the Universe, which in turn decreases the angular scale of the Doppler peaks and increases Silk damping by photon diffusion. This unique signature could be used to (dis)prove the existence of primordial magnetic fields of strength as small as B~10^(-11) Gauss by upcoming cosmic microwave background observations.
It is commonly assumed that the stochastic background of gravitational waves on cosmological scales follows an almost scale-independent power spectrum, as generically predicted by the inflationary paradigm. However, it is not inconceivable that the spectrum could have strongly scale-dependent features, generated, e.g., via transient dynamics of spectator axion-gauge fields during inflation. Using the temperature and polarisation maps from the \textit{Planck} and BICEP/Keck datasets, we search for such features, taking the example of a log-normal bump in the primordial tensor spectrum at CMB sc…
In the measurements of cosmic microwave background polarizations, three frequency channels are necessary for discriminating the primordial B-modes from the polarized dust and the synchrotron emission. We carry out an optimistic estimate on the sensitivity to the detection of primordial gravitational waves using the cosmic microwave background B-modes only, and explore how to reach the thresholds for the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ in the theoretically well-motivated inflation models. For example, Lyth bound implies $r \simeq 2\times10^{-3}$, a corrected Lyth bound shows $r \simeq 7\times10^{-4}…
The angular power spectrum of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) is a sensitive probe of the local primordial bispectrum. CIB measurements are integrated over a large volume so that the scale dependent bias from the primordial non-Gaussianity leaves a strong signal in the CIB power spectrum. Although galactic dust dominates over the non-Gaussian CIB signal, it is possible to mitigate the dust contamination with enough frequency channels, especially if high frequencies such as the Planck 857 GHz channel are available. We show that, in this case, measurements of the cosmic microwave background…
In this paper we study the effect of cosmic neutrino decoupling on the spectrum of cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). At temperatures T>>1 MeV, neutrinos constitute a perfect fluid and do not hinder GW propagation, while for T<<1 MeV they free-stream and have an effective viscosity that damps cosmological GWs by a constant amount. In the intermediate regime, corresponding to neutrino decoupling, the damping is frequency-dependent. GWs entering the horizon during neutrino decoupling have a frequency f ~ 1 nHz, corresponding to a frequency region that will be probed by Pulsar Timing Arrays …
In this work we study the imprints of a primordial cosmic string on inflationary power spectrum. Cosmic string induces two distinct contributions on curvature perturbations power spectrum. The first type of correction respects the translation invariance while violating isotropy. This generates quadrupolar statistical anisotropy in CMB maps which is constrained by the Planck data. The second contribution breaks both homogeneity and isotropy, generating a dipolar power asymmetry in variance of temperature fluctuations with its amplitude falling on small scales. We show that the strongest constra…
Understanding the interaction of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) plasma is important for observational cosmology. In this article, we provide an analysis of an effect apparently overlooked as yet. We consider a single free electric charge and suppose that it can be agitated by primordial GWs propagating through the CMB plasma, resulting in periodic, regular motion along particular directions. Light reflected by the charge will be partially polarized, and this will imprint a characteristic pattern on the CMB. We study this effect by considering a …
There are at least three cosmic backgrounds of primordial gravitational waves coming from inflation: those produced during inflation and associated with the stretching of quantum modes; those produced at the violent stage of preheating after inflation; and those associated with the self-ordering of Goldstone modes if inflation ends via a global symmetry breaking scenario, like in hybrid inflation. Each background has its own characteristic spectrum with specific features. We describe in detail the origin of extra peaks in the PGW background from preheating in the case in which inflation ends w…
We constrain the primordial gravitational waves from cosmic microwave background (CMB) and stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) observations. SGWB provides the latest way to explore the early universe and the cosmological evolution which can be reflected by primordial gravitational waves. We not only combine LIGO observations with CMB to measure primordial gravitational waves, but also forecast the potential abilities of the LISA detector and PTA projects. In the $Λ$CDM+$r$+$n_t$ model, the standard six parameters change slightly from SGWB observations. While the constraints on tens…
We explore the effect of relic gravitational waves on the primordial phase change from the quark-gluon plasma into the low density hadron gas that occurred approximately $10^{-5}$s after the beginning. We show that the gravitational wave, through doing work on the fluid, modulates the local volumes, causing a pressure modulation which either suppresses or boosts the bubble cavitation rate. The boosted rate is significant, implying that the phase transition could have occurred earlier than if this interaction is not considered.
After the so-called cosmic recombination, the expanding universe entered into a period of darkness since most of the matter was in a neutral state. About a billion years later, however, the intergalactic space was once again ionized. The process, known as the cosmic reionization, required the operation of mechanisms that are not well understood. Among other ionizing sources, Population III stars, mini-quasars, and X-ray emitting microquasars have been invoked. In this article we propose that primordial cosmic rays, accelerated at the termination points of the jets of the first microquasars, ma…
Here I discuss the conversion of relic gravitons into photons in large scale cosmological magnetic fields. It is shown that the conversion probability is quite large at the post recombination epoch with a rather large density of formed photons. The produced electromagnetic radiation could make a substantial contribution to the cosmic extragalactic background light and even explain the cosmic x ray background excess.
Study of primordial non-Gaussianity $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and $g_{\mathrm{NL}}$ with the cross-correlations between the scalar-induced gravitational waves and the cosmic microwave background
We consider the hypothesis that nonlocal, omnidirectional, causally-coherent quantum entanglement of inflationary horizons may account for some well-known measured anomalies of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy on large angular scales. It is shown that causal coherence can lead to less cosmic variance in the large-angle power spectrum ${C}_\ell$ of primordial curvature perturbations on spherical horizons than predicted by the standard model of locality in effective field theory, and to new symmetries of the angular correlation function ${C}(Θ)$. Causal considerations are used to con…
We estimate the B-polarisation induced in the Cosmic Microwave Background by the non-linear evolution of density perturbations. Using the second-order Boltzmann code SONG, our analysis incorporates, for the first time, all physical effects at recombination. We also include novel contributions from the redshift part of the Boltzmann equation and from the bolometric definition of the temperature in the presence of polarisation. The remaining line-of-sight terms (lensing and time-delay) have previously been studied and must be calculated non-perturbatively. The intrinsic B-mode polarisation is pr…
We investigate the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) from the collapse of spherically symmetric domain wall bubbles, which spontaneously nucleate via quantum tunneling during inflation. Since the tension of domain walls changes with time and so domain walls nucleate in a short time interval, the mass function of PBHs in general has a spike-like structure. In contrast to models in which PBHs produced from overdense regions, our model avoids the uncertainties of PBHs production mechanism. PBHs from domain walls with mass around $10^{20}\mathrm{g}$ may constitute all dark matter, those w…
A claimed detection of cosmological tensor perturbations from inflation via B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background requires distinguishing other possible B-mode sources. One such potential source of confusion is primordial magnetic fields. For sufficiently low-amplitude B-mode signals, the microwave background temperature and polarization power spectra from power-law tensor perturbations and from a power-law primordial magnetic field are indistinguishable. However, we show that such a magnetic field will induce a small-scale Faraday rotation which is detectable using four-point…
The most direct probe of non-Gaussian initial conditions has come from bispectrum measurements of temperature fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background and of the matter and galaxy distribution at large scales. Such bispectrum estimators are expected to continue to provide the best constraints on the non-Gaussian parameters in future observations. We review and compare the theoretical and observational problems, current results and future prospects for the detection of a non-vanishing primordial component in the bispectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background and large-scale structure, and…
We evaluate the angular bispectrum of the CMB temperature anisotropy at large angular scale due to a stochastic background of primordial magnetic fields. The shape of non-Gaussianity depends on the spectral index of the magnetic field power spectrum and is peaked in the squeezed configuration for a scale-invariant magnetic spectrum. By using the large angular part of the bispectrum generated by magnetic fields, the present bounds on non-Gaussianity set a limit on the amplitude of the primordial magnetic field of the order of 10 nGauss for the scale-invariant case and 20 nGauss for the other sp…
We calculate the cosmic microwave background bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. We take into account the full angular dependence of the bispectrum and discuss the amplitude and also the shape of the bispectrum in $\ell$ space. In the squeezed limit as $\ell_1 = \ell_2 \gg \ell_3$, we estimate a typical values of the normalized reduced bispectrum as $\ell_1(\ell_1 + 1)\ell_3(\ell_3+1)|b_{\ell_1\ell_2\ell_3}| \sim 2 \times 10^{-19}$, for the strength of the primordial magnetic field smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$ scale $B_{1 \rm Mpc} = 4.7 \rm nG$ assuming a nearly sc…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are of fundamental interest in cosmology and astrophysics, and have received much attention as a dark matter candidate and as a potential source of gravitational waves. One possible PBH formation mechanism is the gravitational collapse of cosmic strings. Thus far, the entirety of the literature on PBH production from cosmic strings has focused on the collapse of (quasi)circular cosmic string loops, which make up only a tiny fraction of the cosmic loop population. We demonstrate here a novel PBH formation mechanism: the collapse of a small segment of cosmic string …
As a test of the standard inflationary cosmology, which generically predicts nearly scale-invariant spectrum of primordial curvature fluctuations, we perform Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo analysis to search for possible modulations in the power spectrum and determine its shape together with the cosmological parameters using cosmic microwave background radiation data. By incorporating various three-parameter features on the simple power-law spectrum, we find an oscillatory modulation localized around the comoving wavenumber $k\simeq 0.009\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ at 99.995% confidence level which improves …
We present the first cosmological simulations of primordial magnetic fields derived from the constraints by the Cosmic Microwave Background observations, based on the fields' gravitational effect on cosmological perturbations. We evolved different primordial magnetic field models with the {\enzo} code and compared their observable signatures (and relative differences) in galaxy clusters, filaments and voids. The differences in synchrotron radio powers and Faraday Rotation measure from galaxy clusters are generally too small to be detected, whereas differences present in filaments will be testa…
A unique feature of gravity is its ability to control the information accessible to any specific observer. We quantify the notion of cosmic information ('CosmIn') for an eternal observer in the universe. Demanding the finiteness of CosmIn requires the universe to have a late-time accelerated expansion. Combining the introduction of CosmIn with generic features of the quantum structure of spacetime (e.g., the holographic principle), we present a holistic model for cosmology. We show that (i) the numerical value of the cosmological constant, as well as (ii) the amplitude of the primordial, scale…
It is conjectured that energy sources of the gamma ray bursts are similar to energy sources which trigger solar and stellar transient activity phenomena like flares, plasma accelerated flows in the flux tubes and, dissipation of energy and acceleration of particles by the MHD waves. Phenomenologically we examine in detail the following energy sources which may trigger gamma ray bursts : (i) cosmic primordial flares which could be solar flare like phenomena in the region of inter galactic or inter galactic cluster regions, (ii) primordial magnetic flux tubes that might have been formed from the…
Primordial magnetic fields (PMFs), being present before the epoch of cosmic recombination, induce small-scale baryonic density fluctuations. These inhomogeneities lead to an inhomogeneous recombination process that alters the peaks and heights of the large-scale anisotropies of the cosmic microwave backround (CMB) radiation. Utilizing numerical compressible MHD calculations and a Monte Carlo Markov chain analysis, which compares calculated CMB anisotropies with those observed by the \textit{WMAP} and \textit{Planck} satellites, we derive limits on the magnitude of putative PMFs. We find that t…
In the last few decades, advances in observational cosmology have given us a standard model of cosmology. We know the content of the universe to within a few percent. With more ambitious experiments on the way, we hope to move beyond the knowledge of what the universe is made of, to why the universe is the way it is. In this review paper we focus on primordial non-Gaussianity as a probe of the physics of the dynamics of the universe at the very earliest moments. We discuss 1) theoretical predictions from inflationary models and their observational consequences in the cosmic microwave backgroun…
It has been suggested that superheavy charged particles might have been born in primordial bound pairs at the end of cosmic inflation. Such pairs have been proposed as a source of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR). We show that primordial bound pairs of magnetic monopoles larger than $10^{-9}$ cm quickly thermolise due to the interaction with primordial electron-positron plasma and any such initial primordial concentration is washed out. The final concentration will therefore be defined by their equilibrium abundance.
Circular ("V-mode") polarization is expected to be vanishing in the CMB, since it is not produced in Thomson scattering. However, considering that the conventional CMB anisotropies are generated via an early universe mechanism such as inflation or a bouncing scenario, it is possible that circular polarization could be primordially produced and survive to the surface of last scattering. We study this in detail, and find a large class of inflationary models that produce a nearly scale invariant spectrum of scalar V-mode anisotropies. We study the inflationary production and subsequent evolution …
We constrain the spectral running by combining cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data and the constraint from primordial black holes (PBHs). We find that the constraint from PBHs has a significant impact on the running of running of scalar spectral index, and a power-law scalar power spectrum without running is consistent with observational data once the constraint from PBHs is taken into account. In addition, from the constraints on the slow-roll parameters, the derived tensor spectral index in the single-field slow-roll inflation model is quite small, …
This is a summary of presentations delivered at the OC1 parallel session "Primordial Gravitational Waves and the CMB" of the 12th Marcel Grossmann meeting in Paris, July 2009. The reports and discussions demonstrated significant progress that was achieved in theory and observations. It appears that the existing data provide some indications of the presence of gravitational wave contribution to the CMB anisotropies, while ongoing and planned observational efforts are likely to convert these indications into more confident statements about the actual detection.
By considering similar observed properties of gamma ray bursts (GRB) and solar flares with the prevailing physical conditions in the cosmic environment, the following study suggests that most likely and promising energy source for the central engine which triggers GRB may be due to primordial flares, solar flare like phenomena, at the sites of inter galactic or inter galactic clusters in the early universe. The derived energy-redshift relation, E = E_{0}{(1+z)}^3 (where E is the amount of energy released, z is the redshift of GRB and E_{0} is a constant which is estimated to be ~ 10^{52} ergs)…
The 21-cm signal from the cosmic reionization epoch can shed light on the history of heating of the primordial intergalactic medium (IGM) at z~30-10. It has been suggested that X-rays from the first accreting black holes could significantly heat the Universe at these early epochs. Here we propose another IGM heating mechanism associated with the first stars. As known from previous work, the remnants of powerful supernovae (SNe) ending the lives of massive Population III stars could readily expand out of their host dark matter minihalos into the surrounding IGM, aided by the preceeding photoeva…
Using the full radiation transfer function, we numerically calculate the CMB angular bispectrum seeded by the compensated magnetic scalar density mode. We find that, for the string inspired primordial magnetic fields characterized by index $n_B=-2.9$ and mean-field amplitude $B_{\lam}=9{\rm nG}$, the angular bispectrum is dominated by two primordial magnetic shapes. The first magnetic shape looks similar to the one from local-type primordial curvature perturbations, so both the amplitude and profile of the Komatsu-Spergel estimator (reduced bispectrum) seeded by this shape are almost the same …
We study the effect of primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) on the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We assume the spectrum of PMFs is described by log-normal distribution which has a characteristic scale, rather than power-law spectrum. This scale is expected to reflect the generation mechanisms and our analysis is complementary to previous studies with power-law spectrum. We calculate power spectra of energy density and Lorentz force of the log-normal PMFs, and then calculate CMB temperature and polarization angular power spectra from scalar, vector, and tensor modes of per…
We show that inflationary models with broken rotational invariance generate testable off-diagonal signatures in the correlation between the $μ$-type distortion and temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background. More precisely, scenarios with a quadrupolar bispectrum asymmetry, usually generated by fluctuations of primordial vector fields, produce a nonvanishing $μ$-$T$ correlation when $|\ell_1-\ell_2|=2$. Since spectral distortions are sensitive to primordial fluctuations up to very small scales, a cosmic variance limited spectral distortion experiment can detect such effects wi…
If primordial black holes (PBHs) contribute more than 10 percent of the dark matter (DM) density, their energy density today is of the same order as that of the baryons. Such a cosmic coincidence might hint at a mutual origin for the formation scenario of PBHs and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Baryogenesis can be triggered by a sharp transition of the rolling rate of inflaton from slow-roll to (nearly) ultraslow-roll phases that produces large curvature perturbations for PBH formation in single-field inflationary models. We show that the baryogenesis requirement drives the PBH contribu…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) could provide the dark matter but a variety of constraints restrict the possible mass windows to $10^{16} - 10^{17}$g, $10^{20} - 10^{24}$g and $10 - 10^3M_{\odot}$. The last possibility is of special interest in view of the recent detection of black-hole mergers by LIGO. PBHs larger than $10^3 M_{\odot}$ might have important cosmological consequences even if they have only a small fraction of the dark matter density. In particular, they could generate cosmological structures either individually through the "seed" effect or collectively through the "Poisson" effec…
A small fraction, $f$, of cosmic string loops can collapse to form Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). Constraints on the abundance of PBHs can therefore be used to constrain $f$. We update these calculations, taking into account the PBH extended mass function, and find $f < 10^{-31} (G μ/ c^2)^{-3/2}$. This is roughly two orders of magnitude tighter than previous constraints. The improvement from the tighter constraints on the abundance of PBHs is partly off-set by refinements to the theoretical calculation of the cosmic string loop formation rate.
This lecture is a sketch of the physics of the cosmic microwave background. The observed anisotropy can be divided into four main contributions: variations in the temperature and gravitational potential of the primordial plasma, Doppler effect from its motion, and a net red/blueshift the photons accumulate from traveling through evolving gravitational potentials on their way from the primordial plasma to here. These variations are due to primordial perturbations, probably caused by quantum fluctuations in the very early universe. The ongoing Planck satellite mission to observe the cosmic micro…
(abridged) We explore the imprints of deviations from Gaussian primordial density fluctuations on the skeleton of the large-scale matter distribution as mapped through cosmological weak lensing. We computed the skeleton length of simulated effective convergence maps covering $\sim 35$ sq. deg each, extracted from a suite of cosmological $n-$body runs with different levels of local primordial non-Gaussianity. The latter is expected to alter the structure formation process with respect to the fiducial Gaussian scenario, and thus to leave a signature on the cosmic web. We found that alterations o…
We show that current cosmic acceleration can be explained by an almost massless scalar field experiencing quantum fluctuations during primordial inflation. Provided its mass does not exceed the Hubble parameter today, this field has been frozen during the cosmological ages to start dominating the universe only recently. By using supernovae data, completed with baryonic acoustic oscillations from galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background anisotropies, we infer the energy scale of primordial inflation to be around a few TeV, which implies a negligible tensor-to-scalar ratio of the primordia…
