Gyrokinetic simulations of the fishbone instability in DIII-D tokamak plasmas find that self-generated zonal flows can dominate the nonlinear saturation by preventing coherent structures from persisting or drifting in the energetic particle phase space when the mode frequency down-chirps. Results from the simulation with zonal flows agree quantitatively, for the first time, with experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and energetic particle transport. Moreover, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are likely responsible for the formation of an internal transport barrier that was observed after fishbone bursts in this DIII-D experiment. Finally, gyrokinetic simulations of a related ITER baseline scenario show that the fishbone induces insignificant energetic particle redistribution and may enable high performance scenarios in ITER burning plasma experiments.
In the presence of energetic particles (EPs) from auxiliary heating and burning plasmas, fishbone instability and Alfvén modes can be excited and their transition can take place in certain overlapping regimes. Using the hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic model in the NIMROD code, we have identified such a transition between the fishbone instability and the $β$-induced Alfvén Eigenmode (BAE) for the NBI heated plasmas on HL-2A. When the safety factor at magnetic axis is well below one, typical kink-fishbone transition occurs as the EP fraction increases. When $q_0$ is raised to approaching one,…

In the presence of energetic particles (EPs), the Long-Lived Mode (LLM) frequency multiplication with n = 1,2,3 or higher is often observed on HL-2A, where n is the toroidal mode number. Hybrid kinetic-MHD model simulations of the energetic particle (EP) driven kink/fishbone modes on a static HL-2A-like tokamak using NIMROD code find that, when the background plasma pressure is relatively high, and the EP pressure and the beam energy are relatively low, the mode frequency increases almost linearly with EP pressure, and the frequency is proportional to n ("frequency multiplication"), even in ab…
Using the recently-installed Fast-Ion Deuterium Alpha (FIDA) spectrometer, the effects of low-frequency (20-50 kHz) chirping energetic particle modes with toroidal mode number n \geq 1 on the fast-ion population in MAST plasmas are considered. Results from the FIDA diagnostic are presented and discussed in the light of the present theoretical understanding of these modes, known as fishbones, in plasmas with reversed shear. Measurements of the fast-ion population reveal strong redistribution of fast ions in both real and velocity space as a result of the fishbones. Time-resolved measurements th…
In tokamaks, the stability of magneto-hydrodynamic modes can be modified by populations of energetic particles. In ITER-type fusion reactors, such populations can be generated by fusion reactions or auxiliary heating. The electron-driven fishbone mode results from the resonant interaction of the internal kink mode with the slow toroidal precessional motion of energetic electrons and is frequently observed in present-day tokamaks with Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating or Lower Hybrid Current Drive. In Tore Supra, electron-driven fishbones are observed during LHCD-powered discharges in which …

The role of self-generated zonal flows in the collisionless trapped-electron mode (CTEM) turbulence is a long-standing open issue in tokamak plasmas. Here we show, for the first time, that the zonal flow excitation in the CTEM turbulence is formally isomorphic to that in the ion temperature gradient turbulence. Trapped electrons contribute implicitly only via linear dynamics. Theoretical analyses further suggest that, for short wavelength CTEMs, the zonal flow excitation is weak and, more importantly, not an effective saturation mechanism. Corresponding controlling parameters are also identifi…
The resonant and non-resonant effects of core plasma on the excitation of low frequency modes with $ω< ω_{BAE}$, such as Beta-induced Alfvén Acoustic Eigenmodes (BAAEs) and Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs) are examined in the framework of the generalized fishbone-like dispersion relation. The formalism of the fishbone-like equation contains all the necessary ingredients to describe the features of these low frequency fluctuations, and explain experimental findings. Core plasma properties (diamagnetic frequency and precession resonance with trapped ions) strongly affect the excitation of the mod…

The derivation of an intermediate-scale gyrokinetic-electron theory in nonuniform tokamak plasmas [Chen H. et al 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 066017] has shown that a Navier-Stokes type nonlinearity couples electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) modes and zonal flow (ZF) modes with wavelengths much shorter than the ion gyroradius but much longer than the electron gyroradius. This intermediate-scale ETG-ZF coupling is typically stronger than the Hasegawa-Mima type nonlinearity characteristic of the fluid approximation and is predicted to lead to relevant zonal flow generation and ETG mode regulation. Elec…

In the linear collisionless limit, a zonal potential perturbation in a toroidal plasma relaxes, in general, to a non-zero residual value. Expressions for the residual value in tokamak and stellarator geometries, and for arbitrary wavelengths, are derived. These expressions involve averages over the lowest order particle trajectories, that typically cannot be evaluated analytically. In this work, an efficient numerical method for the evaluation of such expressions is reported. It is shown that this method is faster than direct gyrokinetic simulations performed with the GENE and EUTERPE codes. C…
We show that zonal flow can be preferentially excited by intermediate-scale toroidal electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence in tokamak plasmas. Previous theoretical studies that yielded an opposite conclusion assumed a fluid approximation for ETG modes. Here, we carry out a gyrokinetic analysis which ultimately yields a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the ETG dynamics with a Navier-Stokes type nonlinearity. For typical tokamak parameters, it is found that zonal flow generation plays an important role in the intermediate-scale ETG turbulence. This finding offers an explanation for re…
Kinetic ballooning modes (KBM) are widely believed to play a critical role in disruptive dynamics as well as turbulent transport in tokamaks. While the nonlinear evolution of ballooning modes has been proposed as a mechanism for detonation in tokamak plasmas, the role of kinetic effects in such nonlinear dynamics remains largely unexplored. In this work global gyrokinetic simulation results of KBM nonlinear behavior are presented. Instead of the finite-time singularity predicted by ideal MHD theory, the kinetic instability is shown to develop into an intermediate nonlinear regime of exponentia…

We present a theory of the nonlinear growth of zonal flows in magnetized plasma turbulence, by the mechanism of secondary instability. The theory is derived for general magnetic geometry, and is thus applicable to both tokamaks and stellarators. The predicted growth rate is shown to compare favorably with nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations, with the error scaling as expected with the small parameter of the theory.
The collisionless axisymmetric zonal flow residual calculation for a tokamak plasma is generalized to include electromagnetic perturbations. We formulate and solve the complete initial value zonal flow problem by retaining the fully self-consistent axisymmetric spatial perturbations in the electric and magnetic fields. Simple expressions for the electrostatic, shear and compressional magnetic residual responses are derived that provide a fully electromagnetic test of the zonal flow residual in gyrokinetic codes. Unlike the electrostatic potential, the parallel vector potential and the parallel…
Through a systematically developed theory, we demonstrate that the motion of instanton identified in [Y. Z. Zhang, Z. Y. Liu, T. Xie, S. M. Mahajan, and J. Liu, Physics of Plasmas 24, 122304 (2017)] is highly correlated to the intermittent excitation and propagation of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) that are observed in tokamaks. While many numerical simulations have observed the phenomena, it is the first theory that reveals the physical mechanism behind GAM intermittent excitation and propagation. The preceding work is based on the micro-turbulence associated with toroidal ion temperature grad…
Compact formulas for bounce and transit orbit averaging of the fluctuation-amplitude eikonal factor in axisymmetric tokamak geometry, which is frequently encountered in bounce-gyrokinetic description of microturbulence, are given in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions and elliptic integrals. These formulas are readily applicable to the calculation of the neoclassical susceptibility in the framework of modern bounce-gyrokinetic theory. In the long-wavelength limit for axisymmetric electrostatic perturbations, we recover the expression for the Rosenbluth-Hinton residual zonal flow [Rosenbluth…
The role of ion polarisation and finite Larmor radius on the isotope effect on turbulent tokamak edge transport and flows is investigated by means of local electromagnetic multi-species gyro-fluid computations. Transport is found to be reduced with the effective plasma mass for protium, deuterium and tritium mixtures. This isotope effect is found for both cold and warm ion models, but significant influence of finite Larmor radius and polarisation effects are identified. Sheared flow reduction of transport through self generated turbulent zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes in the present m…
Edge shear flow and its effect on regulating turbulent transport have long been suspected to play an important role in plasmas operating near the Greenwald density limit $ n_G $. In this study, equilibrium profiles as well as the turbulent particle flux and Reynolds stress across the separatrix in the HL-2A tokamak are examined as $ n_G $ is approached in ohmic L-mode discharges. As the normalized line-averaged density $ \bar{n}_e/n_G $ is raised, the shearing rate of the mean poloidal flow $ ω_{\rm sh} $ drops, and the turbulent drive for the low-frequency zonal flow (the Reynolds power $ \ma…
An analytical model for zonal flow generation by toroidal ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) modes, including finite $β$ electromagnetic effects, is derived. The derivation is based on a fluid model for ions and electrons and takes into account both linear and nonlinear $β$ effects. The influence of finite plasma $β$ on the zonal flow growth rate ($γ_{ZF}$) scaling is investigated for typical tokamak plasma parameters. The results show the importance of the zonal flows close to marginal stability where $γ_{ZF}/γ_{ITG}>>1$ is obtained. In this region the parameter $γ_{ZF}/γ_{ITG}$ increases with $β…

The results of a comprehensive investigation into the effects of various MHD modes on the NBI-generated fast-ion population in MAST plasmas are reported. Fast-ion redistribution due to low-frequency (20-50 kHz) chirping energetic particle modes known as fishbones, as well as the long-lived internal kink mode, is observed with the Fast-Ion Deuterium Alpha (FIDA) spectrometer and radially-scanning collimated neutron camera. In addition, strongly-driven chirping toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes are observed to cause fast-ion redistribution, as are sawteeth and large edge-localised modes. In …
Fast particle-driven waves in the ion cyclotron frequency range (ion cyclotron emission or ICE) have provided a valuable diagnostic of confined and escaping fast ions in many tokamaks. This is a passive, non-invasive diagnostic that would be compatible with the high radiation environment of deuterium-tritium plasmas in ITER, and could provide important information on fusion α-particles and beam ions in that device. In JET, ICE from confined fusion products scaled linearly with fusion reaction rate over six orders of magnitude and provided evidence that α-particle confinement was close to class…
Adopting the theoretical framework for the generalized fishbonelike dispersion relation, an extended hybrid magnetohydrodynamics gyrokinetic simulation model has been derived analytically by taking into account both thermal ion compressibility and diamagnetic effects in addition to energetic particle kinetic behaviors. The extended model has been used for implementing an eXtended version of Hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics Gyrokinetic Code (XHMGC) to study thermal ion kinetic effects on Alfvénic modes driven by energetic particles, such as kinetic beta induced Alfvén eigenmodes in tokamak fusion pl…
Floating potential structures that are correlated over a long distance are observed with a 2D probe array in the plasma edge of the TJ-II stellarator. We introduce a method based on the Singular Value Decomposition to extract the spatio-temporal structure of the global, fluctuating, zonal-flow-like floating potential from the combined measurements of a 2D probe array and a distant single probe. The amplitude of these global structures is seen to modulate not only the high k-poloidal spectral power of the local turbulence, but also particle transport into the unconfined Scraped-Off Layer, as ob…
In tokamak plasmas, the interaction among the micro-turbulence, zonal flows (ZFs) and energetic particles (EPs) can affect the turbulence saturation level and the consequent confinement quality and thus, is important for future burning plasmas. In this work, the EP anisotropy effects on the ZF residual level are studied by using anisotropic EP distributions with dependence on pitch. Significant effects on the long wavelength ZFs have been found when small to moderate width around the dominant pitch in the EP distribution function is assumed. In addition, it is found that ZF residual level is e…
Due to their capability to reduce turbulent transport in magnetized plasmas, understanding the dynamics of zonal flows is an important problem in the fusion programme. Since the pioneering work by Rosenbluth and Hinton in axisymmetric tokamaks, it is known that studying the linear and collisionless relaxation of zonal flow perturbations gives valuable information and physical insight. Recently, the problem has been investigated in stellarators and it has been found that in these devices the relaxation process exhibits a characteristic feature: a damped oscillation. The frequency of this oscill…
Saskatchewan Torus-Modified (STOR-M) is a small tokamak, well known for various fusion related basic experimental studies such as edge turbulent heating, different instabilities, AC (alternating current) tokamak operation, Ohmic H-mode triggering by the electrode biasing, fueling and momentum injection by Compact Torus (CT) injection, and effects of Resonance Magnetic Perturbations (RMP), among others. Some of those experiments require real time visualization of magnetic surface reconstructions either through EFIT or quick analyses and visualization of experimental data during experiments. Rec…
In the complex 3D magnetic fields of stellarators, ion-temperature-gradient turbulence is shown to have two distinct saturation regimes, as revealed by petascale numerical simulations, and explained by a simple turbulence theory. The first regime is marked by strong zonal flows, and matches previous observations in tokamaks. The newly observed second regime, in contrast, exhibits small- scale quasi-two-dimensional turbulence, negligible zonal flows, and, surprisingly, a weaker heat flux scaling. Our findings suggest that key details of the magnetic geometry control turbulence in stellarators.
The phenomenon of redistribution of neutral beam fast-ions due to MHD activity in plasma has been observed on many tokamaks and more recently has been a focus of research on MAST (Turnyanskiy M. et al, 2011 Nucl. Fusion 53 053016). n=1 fishbone modes are observed to cause a large decrease in the neutron emission rate corresponding to a significant perturbation of the fast-ion population in the plasma. Theoretical work on fishbone modes states that the fast-ion distribution itself acts as the source of free energy driving the modes that cause the redistribution. Therefore a series of experiment…

An initial radial electric field, $E_r(0)$, in an axisymmetric tokamak, results in geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) oscillations. The GAMs Landau damp, resulting in a much smaller final residual electric field, $E_r(\infty)$, and accompanying parallel zonal flows (Rosenbluth and Hinton, 1998 PRL 80, 724, hereafter RH). The phenomenon exhibits a large effective mass (inertia due to flows), with an enhancement of order the well-known RH factor. In apparent paradox, the final angular momentum in the RH parallel zonal flow is much smaller than the angular momentum expected from the well-known rapid pr…
