The role of magnetic shear for zonal flow generation by ion-temperature-gradient (ITG-) and trapped electron (TE-) mode turbulence is studied analytically using fluid descriptions. The scaling of the zonal flow (ZF) growth rate with magnetic shear is examined and compared with linear growth rates for typical tokamak parameter values. The results indicate that large levels of ZF are obtained in regions of negative magnetic shear, in particular for ZF driven by TE mode turbulence. The strong magnetic shear scaling obtained for TE mode driven zonal flows originates from the bounce average of the electron magnetic drifts.
General nonlinear equations describing reversed shear Alfven eigenmode (RSAE) self-modulation via zero frequency zonal structure (ZFZS) generation are derived using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory, which are then applied to study the spontaneous ZFZS excitation as well as RSAE nonlinear saturation. It is found that both electrostatic zonal flow (ZF) and electromagnetic zonal current (ZC) can be preferentially excited by finite amplitude RSAE, depending on specific plasma parameters. The modification to local shear Alfven wave continuum is evaluated using the derived saturation level of ZC, which …
A theoretical interpretation is given for the observed long-distance correlations in potential fluctuations in TJ-II. The value of the correlation increases above the critical point of the transition for the emergence of the plasma edge shear flow layer. Mean (i.e. surface averaged, zero-frequency) sheared flows cannot account for the experimental results. A model consisting of four envelope equations for the fluctuation level, the mean flow shear, the zonal flow amplitude shear, and the averaged pressure gradient is proposed. It is shown that the presence of zonal flows is essential to reprod…
A new, frequency modulation mechanism for zonal flow pattern formation is presented. The model predicts the probability distribution function of the flow strength as well as the evolution of the characteristic spatial scale. Magnetic toroidicity-induced global phase dynamics is shown to determine the spatial structure of the flow. A key result is the observation that global phase patterning can lead to zonal flow formation in the absence of turbulence inhomogeneity.
The present work investigates the direct interaction of sheared mean flow with zonal flows (ZF) and the effect of parallel ion motion on ZF generation in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) background turbulence. An analytical model for the direct interaction of sheared mean flows with zonal flows is constructed. The model used for the toroidal ITG driven mode is based on the equations for ion continuity, ion temperature and parallel ion motion whereas the ZF evolution is described by the vorticity equation. The behavior of the ZF growth rate and real frequency is examined for typical tokamak param…
Using a parametric interaction formalism, we show that the equilibrium sheared rotation can enhance the zonal flow damping effect found in Ref. [M. Leconte and P.H. Diamond, \emph{Phys. Plasmas} 19, 055903 (2012)]. This additional damping contribution is proportional to $(L_s/L_V)^2 \times δB_r^2 / B^2$, where $L_s/L_V$ is the ratio of magnetic shear length to the scale-length of equilibrium $E \times B$ flow shear, and $δB_r / B$ is the amplitude of the external magnetic perturbation normalized to the background magnetic field.
Excitation of zonal flow by the modulational instability in the presence of mean shear flow is considered. It is shown that the small amplitude mean flow favours the modulational instability, increasing the growth rate, whereas sufficiently strong mean shear significantly reduces the instability growth rate.
The probability distribution functions (PDFs) of momentum flux and zonal flow formation in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence are investigated, including the effect of the shear flow on the PDFs. While ITG turbulence maintains high level of transport, this may be suppressed by shear flow. Zonal flows are also shown here to have an enhanced likelihood of generation further from marginal stability which will then regulate the ITG turbulence, which is more prominent with increased shear flow, leading to a self-regulating system.
We report the first experimental observation of stationary zonal flows in the pedestal region of the H-mode plasma in the H-1 toroidal heliac. Strong peaks in E_r shear mark the top and foot of the density pedestal. Strong m=n=0 low-frequency (f < 0.6 kHz) zonal flows are observed in regions of increased E_r, suggesting substantial contribution of zonal flows to the spatial modulation of E_r radial profiles. Radial localization of zonal flows is correlated with a region of zero magnetic shear and low-order (7/5) rational surfaces.
We report a non-perturbative study of the effect of different type of shear flows on the evolution of vorticity and particle density fluctuations in interchange turbulence. For the same shear strength, the transport of density is less reduced by streamers than by zonal flows, zonal flows leading to oscillation death. In the inviscid limit, vorticity (density) grows (decays) as a power law due to streamer or zonal flow, and exponentially due to the combined effect of zonal flow and streamer with the same sign of shear. Zonal flow and streamer with the opposite sign of shear lead to oscillation …
Generalized action invariants are identified for various models of drift wave turbulence in the presence of the mean shear flow. It is shown that the wave kinetic equation describing the interaction of the small scale turbulence and large scale shear flow can be naturally written in terms of these invariants. Unlike the wave energy, which is conserved as a sum of small- and large- scale components, the generalized action invariant is shown to correspond to a quantity which is conserved for the small scale component alone. This invariant can be used to construct canonical variables leading to a…
The linear instability of the electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven modes in the presence of zonal flows is investigated. Random and deterministic $cos$ - like profiles of the zonal flow are considered. It is shown that the presence of shearing by zonal flows can stabilize the linear instability of ETG drift modes.
The prevailing paradigm for plasma turbulence associates a unique stationary state to given equilibrium parameters. We report the discovery of bistable turbulence in a strongly magnetised plasma. Two distinct states, obtained with identical equilibrium parameters in first-principle gyrokinetic simulations, have turbulent fluxes of particles, momentum and energy that differ by an order of magnitude, with the low-transport state agreeing with experimental observations. Occurrences of the two states are regulated by the competition between an externally imposed mean flow shear and "zonal" flows g…
Solitary zonal structures have recently been identified in gyrokinetic simulations of subcritical drift-wave (DW) turbulence with background shear flows. However, the nature of these structures has not been fully understood yet. Here, we show that similar structures can be obtained within a reduced model, which complements the modified Hasegawa-Mima equation with a generic primary instability and a background shear flow. We also find that these structures can be qualitatively reproduced in the modified Hasegawa-Wakatani equation, which subsumes the reduced model as a limit. In particular, we i…

The collisionless axisymmetric zonal flow residual calculation for a tokamak plasma is generalized to include electromagnetic perturbations. We formulate and solve the complete initial value zonal flow problem by retaining the fully self-consistent axisymmetric spatial perturbations in the electric and magnetic fields. Simple expressions for the electrostatic, shear and compressional magnetic residual responses are derived that provide a fully electromagnetic test of the zonal flow residual in gyrokinetic codes. Unlike the electrostatic potential, the parallel vector potential and the parallel…
The cold ion limit of the local gyrokinetic model is rigorously taken to produce a nonlinear system of fluid equations that includes background flow shear. No fluid closure is required. By considering a simple slab geometry with magnetic drifts, but no magnetic shear, these fluid equations reduce to the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima model in the presence of flow shear. Analytic solutions to this model are found to study the impact of ExB flow shear on the stability of a single Parallel Velocity Gradient (PVG) driven mode. Additionally, the model is used to investigate the effect of background ExB flow…

We propose a quantitative model of ion temperature gradient driven turbulence in toroidal magnetized plasmas. In this model, the turbulence is regulated by zonal flows, i.e. mode saturation occurs by a zonal-flow-mediated energy cascade ("shearing"), and zonal flow amplitude is controlled by nonlinear decay. Our model is tested in detail against numerical simulations to confirm that both its assumptions and predictions are satisfied. Key results include (1) a sensitivity of the nonlinear zonal flow response to the energy content of the linear instability, (2) a persistence of zonal-flow-regula…
Recently, quasi-stationary structures called $E \times B$ staircases were observed in gyrokinetic simulations, in all transport channels [Dif-Pradalier et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 085004 (2015)]. We present a novel analytical theory - supported by collisional drift-wave fluid simulations - for the generation of density profile corrugations (staircase), independent of the action of zonal flows: Turbulent fluctuations self-organize to generate quasi-stationary radial modulations $Δθ(r,t)$ of the transport crossphase $θ$ between density and electric potential fluctuations. The radial modulations…
Numerical simulations of Alfvén modes (AM) driven by energetic particles are performed with the GK global PIC code ORB5. A reversed shear equilibrium magnetic field is adopted. A simplified configuration with circular flux surfaces and large aspect ratio is considered. The nonlinear saturation of beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAE) is investigated. The roles of the wave-particle nonlinearity of the different species, i.e. thermal ions, electrons, and energetic ions are described, in particular for their role in the saturation of the BAE and the generation of zonal flows. The nonlinear redistr…
The role of ion polarisation and finite Larmor radius on the isotope effect on turbulent tokamak edge transport and flows is investigated by means of local electromagnetic multi-species gyro-fluid computations. Transport is found to be reduced with the effective plasma mass for protium, deuterium and tritium mixtures. This isotope effect is found for both cold and warm ion models, but significant influence of finite Larmor radius and polarisation effects are identified. Sheared flow reduction of transport through self generated turbulent zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes in the present m…
The saturated state of turbulence driven by the ion-temperature-gradient instability is investigated using a two-dimensional long-wavelength fluid model that describes the perturbed electrostatic potential and perturbed ion temperature in a magnetic field with constant curvature (a $Z$-pinch) and an equilibrium temperature gradient. Numerical simulations reveal a well-defined transition between a finite-amplitude saturated state dominated by strong zonal-flow and zonal-temperature perturbations, and a blow-up state that fails to saturate on a box-independent scale. We argue that this transitio…
Consideration of wave--flow resonance addresses the long-standing problem of how zonal flows (ZF) saturate in the limit of weak or zero frictional drag, and also determines the ZF scale. For relevant magnetic geometries, the frequently quoted tertiary instability requires unphysical enhancement of ZF shear and thus is irrelevant to the near-marginal, frictionless regime. We show that resonant vorticity mixing, which conserves potential enstrophy, enables ZF saturation in the absence of drag, and so is effective in the Dimits up-shift regime. Vorticity mixing is incorporated as a nonlinear, sel…
Edge shear flow and its effect on regulating turbulent transport have long been suspected to play an important role in plasmas operating near the Greenwald density limit $ n_G $. In this study, equilibrium profiles as well as the turbulent particle flux and Reynolds stress across the separatrix in the HL-2A tokamak are examined as $ n_G $ is approached in ohmic L-mode discharges. As the normalized line-averaged density $ \bar{n}_e/n_G $ is raised, the shearing rate of the mean poloidal flow $ ω_{\rm sh} $ drops, and the turbulent drive for the low-frequency zonal flow (the Reynolds power $ \ma…
Turbulence driven zonal flows play an important role in fusion devices since they improve plasma confinement by limiting the level of anomalous transport. Current theories mostly focus on flow excitation but do not self-consistently describe the nearly stationary zonal flow turbulence equilibrium state. First-principles two-fluid turbulence studies are used to construct a Reynolds stress response functional from observations in turbulent states. This permits, for the first time, a reliable charting of zonal flow turbulence equilibria.
The self-organization of turbulence into regular zonal flows can be fruitfully investigated with quasilinear methods and statistical descriptions. A wave kinetic equation that assumes asymptotically large-scale zonal flows is pathological. From an exact description of quasilinear dynamics emerges two better geometrical optics approximations. These involve not only the mean flow shear but also the second and third derivative of the mean flow. One approximation takes the form of a new wave kinetic equation, but is only valid when the zonal flow is quasi-static and wave action is conserved.
The set of equations describing nonlinear evolution of a single toroidal Alfven eigenmode are derived, including both zero frequency zonal structure (ZFZS) generation and wave-particle phase space nonlinearities. The simplified case of neglecting wave-particle phase space nonlinearity is then investigated to focus on different roles of energetic particles and bulk plasmas on ZFZS generation. It is shown that energetic particles and bulk plasma play dominant roles in ZFZS generation in different nonlinear stages, and the corresponding processes are qualitatively different. Several properties of…
Kinetic ballooning modes (KBM) are widely believed to play a critical role in disruptive dynamics as well as turbulent transport in tokamaks. While the nonlinear evolution of ballooning modes has been proposed as a mechanism for detonation in tokamak plasmas, the role of kinetic effects in such nonlinear dynamics remains largely unexplored. In this work global gyrokinetic simulation results of KBM nonlinear behavior are presented. Instead of the finite-time singularity predicted by ideal MHD theory, the kinetic instability is shown to develop into an intermediate nonlinear regime of exponentia…
We show that zonal flow can be preferentially excited by intermediate-scale toroidal electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence in tokamak plasmas. Previous theoretical studies that yielded an opposite conclusion assumed a fluid approximation for ETG modes. Here, we carry out a gyrokinetic analysis which ultimately yields a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the ETG dynamics with a Navier-Stokes type nonlinearity. For typical tokamak parameters, it is found that zonal flow generation plays an important role in the intermediate-scale ETG turbulence. This finding offers an explanation for re…
The role of self-generated zonal flows in the collisionless trapped-electron mode (CTEM) turbulence is a long-standing open issue in tokamak plasmas. Here we show, for the first time, that the zonal flow excitation in the CTEM turbulence is formally isomorphic to that in the ion temperature gradient turbulence. Trapped electrons contribute implicitly only via linear dynamics. Theoretical analyses further suggest that, for short wavelength CTEMs, the zonal flow excitation is weak and, more importantly, not an effective saturation mechanism. Corresponding controlling parameters are also identifi…
Zonal flows in rotating systems have been previously shown to be suppressed by the imposition of a background magnetic field aligned with the direction of rotation. Understanding the physics behind the suppression may be important in systems found in astrophysical fluid dynamics, such as stellar interiors. However, the mechanism of suppression has not yet been explained. In the idealized setting of a magnetized beta plane, we provide a theoretical explanation that shows how magnetic fluctuations directly counteract the growth of weak zonal flows. Two distinct calculations yield consistent conc…
The role of parallel ion motion for zonal flow generation in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) mode turbulence is investigated with focus on the effects of acoustic modes and toroidicity on the zonal flow. One possible reason for the weak suppression of ITG turbulence by zonal flows found in experiments in the Columbia Linear Machine (CLM) [Phys. Plasmas {\bf 13} 055905 (2006)] might be due to the small toroidicity ($ε_n = 2L_n/R$) in the experiment. The zonal flow is often directly dependent on the ITG mode and the coupling of zonal flow to acoustic modes and hence is directly affected by any ch…
Nonlinear self-interaction of finite amplitude energetic particle induced geodesic acoustic mode (EGAM) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found that both zero frequency zonal flow(ZFZF) and second harmonic can be driven by finite amplitude EGAM, with energetic particles (EPs) playing a dominant role in the nonlinear couplings through finite orbit width effects. For ZFZF, the effects of EPs on EGAM nonlinear self-coupling dominate that of the thermal plasmas which are also present; while the second harmonic generation is only possible via finite amplitude coupling though…
The probability distribution function (PDF) tails of the zonal flow structure formation and the PDF tails of momentum flux by incorporating effect of a shear flow in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) turbulence are computed in the present paper. The bipolar vortex soliton (modon) is assumed to be the coherent structure responsible for bursty and intermittent events driving the PDF tails. It is found that stronger zonal flows are generated in ITG turbulence than Hasegawa-Mima (HM) turbulence as well as further from marginal stability. This suggests that although ITG turbulence has a higher level o…
Zonal flows are recognised to play a crucial role for magnetised plasma confinement. The genesis of these flows out of turbulent fluctuations is therefore of significant interest. We investigate the relative importance of zonal flow generation mechanisms via the Reynolds stress, Maxwell stress, and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) transfer in drift-Alfvén turbulence. By means of numerical computations we quantify the energy transfer into zonal flows owing to each of these effects. The importance of the three driving ingredients in electrostatic and electromagnetic turbulence for conditions relevan…

We extend our previous work on the 2D Dimits transition in ion-scale turbulence (Ivanov et al. 2020) to include variations along the magnetic field. We consider a three-field fluid model for the perturbations of electrostatic potential, ion temperature, and ion parallel flow in a constant-magnetic-curvature geometry without magnetic shear. It is derived in the cold-ion, long-wavelength asymptotic limit of the gyrokinetic theory. Just as in the 2D model, a low-transport (Dimits) regime exists and is found to be dominated by a quasi-static staircase-like arrangement of strong zonal flows and zon…
We report a non-perturbative study of the effects of shear flows on turbulence reduction in a decaying turbulence in two dimensions. By considering different initial power spectra and shear flows (zonal flows, combined zonal flows and streamers), we demonstrate how shear flows rapidly generate small scales, leading to a fast damping of turbulence amplitude. In particular, a double exponential decrease in turbulence amplitude is shown to occur due to an exponential increase in wavenumber. The scaling of the effective dissipation time scale $τ_{e}$, previously taken to be a hybrid time scale $τ_…
The Dimits shift is the shift between the threshold of the drift-wave primary instability and the actual onset of turbulent transport in magnetized plasma. It is generally attributed to the suppression of turbulence by zonal flows, but developing a more detailed understanding calls for consideration of specific reduced models. The modified Terry--Horton system has been proposed by St-Onge [J. Plasma Phys. $\boldsymbol{\rm 83}$, 905830504 (2017)] as a minimal model capturing the Dimits shift. Here, we use this model to develop an analytic theory of the Dimits shift and a related theory of the t…
Shaping of magnetic flux surfaces is found to have a strong impact on turbulence and transport in tokamak edge plasmas. A series of axisymmetric equilibria with varying elongation and triangularity, and a divertor configuration are implemented into a computational gyrofluid turbulence model. The mechanisms of shaping effects on turbulence and flows are identified. Transport is mainly reduced by local magnetic shearing and an enhancement of zonal shear flows induced by elongation and X-point shaping.
The drift kinetic equation is solved for low density TJ-II plasmas employing slowly varying, time-dependent profiles. This allows to simulate density ramp-up experiments and to describe from first principles the formation and physics of the radial electric field shear, which is associated to the transition from electron to ion root. We show that the range of frequencies of plasma potential fluctuations in which zonal flows are experimentally observed is neoclassically undamped in a neighborhood of the transition. This makes the electron root regime of stellarators, close to the transition to i…
Finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects on non-diffusive transport in a prototypical zonal flow with drift waves are studied in the context of a simplified chaotic transport model. The model consists of a superposition of drift waves of the linearized Hasegawa-Mima equation and a zonal shear flow perpendicular to the density gradient. High frequency FLR effects are incorporated by gyroaveraging the ExB velocity. Transport in the direction of the density gradient is negligible and we therefore focus on transport parallel to the zonal flows. A prescribed asymmetry produces strongly asymmetric non- Ga…
