In the cosmological settings, Quantum Gravity effects are typically understood to be limited towards very early phase of the universe, namely in the pre-inflationary era, with limited signatures spilling over into the succeeding inflationary era which gradually fade away as the universe transits into the subsequent radiation and matter driven expansion. In general scenarios as well, the imprints of possible quantum character of gravitons are typically so feeble that they are expected to remain buried under overwhelming noise from other stronger processes. In this work, we demonstrate that quantized gravitational perturbations cause strong observable effects in cosmological settings post the Last Scattering Surface (LSS) more prominently than any other classical or quantum processes. This counter-intuitive effect is facilitated by the fact that the quantum correlators of the gravitons {\it grow divergently large in the matter dominated era} unlike any other background fields leading to an abrupt rise in the processes mediated by correlators of quantum gravitons, which otherwise is way too feeble. The transitions between spherical harmonics states of a hydrogen atom guided by gravitons in a particular phase of the late time era of the universe, provides an example of such a process. Thus the newly formed atoms post LSS are expected to get excited from the vacuum fluctuations of gravitons quite efficiently in this era and also get de-excited to convert the vacuum fluctuations to an additional channel of energy influx into the evolution history. Such unavoidable processes provide an avenue of quantum graviton mediated process becoming important in the late time era, which has many interesting implications.
Acoustic peaks in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature spectrum as observed by the Planck satellite appear to be smoother than our expectation from the standard model lensing effect. This anomalous effect can be also mimicked by a spatially closed Universe with a very low value of Hubble constant that consequently aggravates the already existing discordance between cosmological observations. We reconstruct a signature from the early Universe, a particular form of oscillation in the primordial spectrum of quantum fluctuations with a characteristic frequency, that solves all these a…
In a landscape of compactifications with different numbers of macroscopic dimensions, it is possible that our universe has nucleated from a vacuum where some of our four large dimensions were compact while other, now compact, directions were macroscopic. From our perspective, this shapeshifting can be perceived as an anisotropic background spacetime. As an example, we present a model where our universe emerged from a tunneling event which involves the decompactification of two dimensions compactified on the two-sphere. In this case, our universe is of the Kantowski-Sachs type and therefore hom…
A mechanism producing the transition from an Euclidean to a Loretzian manifold is described. A global Robertson-Walker symmetry is assumed from the large scale data of the visible universe. Allowing for the strain of the manifold as an additional field in the Lagrangian, we interpret the symmetry as a consequence of a global texture defect. The additional term gives rise to a boundary dividing the manifold into an Euclidean plus a Lorentzian region. It is also shown that the presence in the early epoch of homogeneous matter/energy fields preserves the horizon and the signature change across it…
We calculate deviations in cosmological observables as a function of parameters in a class of connection-based models of quantum gravity. In this theory non-trivial modifications to the background cosmology can occur due to a distortion of the wave function of the Universe at the transition from matter to dark energy domination (which acts as a "reflection" in connection space). We are able to exclude some regions of parameter space and show with projected constraints that future experiments like DESI will be able to further constrain these models. An interesting feature of this theory is that…
We study the topological signature of euclidean isometries in pair separations histograms (PSH) and elucidate some unsettled issues regarding distance correlations between cosmic sources in cosmic crystallography. Reducing the noise of individual PSH's using mean pair separations histograms we show how to distinguish between topological and statistical spikes. We report results of simulations that evince that topological spikes are not enough to distinguish between manifolds with the same set of Clifford translations in their covering groups, and that they are not the only signature of topolog…
Two procedures for obtaining (extracting and constructing) the topological signature of any multiply connected Robertson-Walker (RW) universe are presented. It is shown through computer-aided simulations that both approaches give rise to the same topological signature for a multiply connected flat RW universe. The strength of these approaches is illustrated by extracting the topological signatures of a flat ($k=0$), an elliptic ($k=1$), and a hyperbolic ($k=-1$) multiply connected RW universes. We also show how separated contributions of the covering isometries add up to form the topological s…
In this work we investigate the standard deviation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature gradient field as a signature for a multiply connected nature of the Universe. CMB simulations of a spatially infinite universe model within the paradigm of the standard cosmological model present non-zero two-point correlations at any angular scale. This is in contradiction with the extreme suppression of correlations at scales above $60^{\circ}$ in the observed CMB maps. Universe models with spatially multiply connected topology contain typically a discrete spectrum of the Laplacian with a…

We study the classical and quantum evolution of a universe in which the matter source is a massive Dirac spinor field and the universe is described by a Bianchi type I metric. We focus attention on those classical solutions that admit a degenerate metric in which the scale factors have smooth behavior in transition from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain and show that this transition happens when the cosmological constant, $Λ$, is negative. The resulting quantum cosmology and the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation are also studied and closed form expressions for the wave functions of the un…
In this article we investigate the metric signature as a non-differentiable ({\it i.e.} discrete as opposed to continuous) degree of freedom. The specific model is a vacuum 7D Universe on the principal bundle with an SU(2) structural group. An analytical solution is found which to a 4D observer appears as a flat Universe with a fluctuating metric signature, and frozen extra dimensions with an SU(2) instanton gauge field. A piece of this solution with linear size of the Planck length ($\approx l_{Pl}$) can be considered as seeding the quantum birth of a regular Universe. A boundary of this piec…
If the universe has a nontrivial shape (topology) the sky may show multiple correlated images of cosmic objects. These correlations can be couched in terms of distance correlations. We propose a statistical quantity which can be used to reveal the topological signature of any Robertson-Walker (RW) spacetime with nontrivial topology. We also show through computer-aided simulations how one can extract the topological signatures of flat, elliptic, and hyperbolic RW universes with nontrivial topology.
We investigate the behaviour of light rays in an open universe with a partly periodic horn topology. The geodesics can be solved exactly and the periodic topology creates characteristic new effects in temperature maps of the microwave background. Large flat regions appear in COBE sky maps even when multiple images of astronomical sources are unobservable.
We revisit the classical and quantum cosmology of a universe in which a self interacting scalar field is coupled to gravity with a flat FRW type metric undergoing continuous signature transition. We arrange for quantum cosmologically allowed discontinuity in the classical solutions at the signature changing hypersurface, provided these solutions be dual in some respects. This may be of some importance in the study of early universe within the signature changing scenarios.
We consider 1+3 dimensional maximally symmetric Minkowski brane embedded in a 1+4 dimensional maximally symmetric Minkowski background. The resulting 1+3 dimensional effective field theory is of DBI (Dirac-Born-Infeld) Galileon type. We use this model to study the late time acceleration of the universe. We study the deviation of the model from the concordance ΛCDM behaviour. Finally we put constraints on the model parameters using various observational data.
A short inflationary phase may not erase all traces of the primordial universe. Associated observables include both spatial curvature and "anomalies" in the microwave background or large scale structure. The present curvature $Ω_{K,0}$ reflects the initial curvature, $Ω_{K,\mathrm{start}}$, and the angular size of anomalies depends on $k_\mathrm{start}$, the comoving horizon size at the onset of inflation. We estimate posteriors for $Ω_{K,\mathrm{start}}$ and $k_\mathrm{start}$ using current data and simulations, and show that if either quantity is measured to have a non-zero value, both are l…
Detection of a gravitational-wave signal of non-astrophysical origin would be a landmark discovery, potentially providing a significant clue to some of our most basic, big-picture scientific questions about the Universe. In this white paper, we survey the leading early-Universe mechanisms that may produce a detectable signal -- including inflation, phase transitions, topological defects, as well as primordial black holes -- and highlight the connections to fundamental physics. We review the complementarity with collider searches for new physics, and multimessenger probes of the large-scale str…
Brane-Universe model embedded in 6-dimensional space-time with the signature (2+4) is considered. A matter is gravitationally trapped in three space dimensions, but both time-like directions are open. Choosing of the dimension and the signature of the model is initiated with the conformal symmetry for massless particles and any point in our world can be (1+1) string-like object.
We present a cosmological model arising from a gravitational theory with an infinite tower of higher-order curvature invariants that can reproduce the entire evolution of the Universe: from inflation to late-time acceleration, without invoking an inflaton nor a cosmological constant. The theory is Einsteinian-like. The field equations for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric are of second-order and can reproduce a late-time evolution that is consistent with the acceleration provided by the cosmological constant at low redshift. Our results force us to reinterpret the nature of dark ene…
The quantum gravity processes that have taken place in the very early Universe are probably responsible for the observed large-scale cosmological perturbations. The comparison of the theory with the detected microwave background anisotropies favors the conclusion that the very early Universe was not driven by a scalar field with whichever scalar field potential. At the same time, the observations allow us to conclude that there is a good probability of a direct detection of the higher frequency relic gravitational waves with the help of the advanced laser interferometers.
We evaluate the possibility of observable effects arising from collisions between vacuum bubbles in a universe undergoing false-vacuum eternal inflation. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we find that under certain assumptions most positions inside a bubble should have access to a large number of collision events. We calculate the expected number and angular size distribution of such collisions on an observer's "sky," finding that for typical observers the distribution is anisotropic and includes many bubbles, each of which will affect the majority of the observer's sky. After a qualitative dis…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is the foundation of electroweak unification and serves as an integral part of the model building beyond the standard model of particle physics and it also finds interesting applications in the late Universe. We review development related to obtaining the late cosmic acceleration from spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Universe at large scales. This phenomenon is best understood through Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transitions which we briefly describe. Hereafter, we present elements of spontaneous symmetry breaking in relativistic field theory. We then discu…
We show that pairs of widely separated interferometers are advantageous for measuring the Stokes parameter V of a stochastic background of gravitational waves. This parameter characterizes asymmetry of amplitudes of right- and left-handed waves and generation of the asymmetry is closely related to parity violation in the early universe. The advantageous pairs include LIGO(Livingston)-LCGT and AIGO-Virgo that are relatively insensitive to Omega_GW (the simple intensity of the background). Using at least three detectors, information of the intensity Omega_GW and the degree of asymmetry V can be …
Inflation and dark energy are two of the most relevant aspects of modern cosmology. These different epochs provide the universe is passing through accelerated phases soon after the Big-Bang and at present stage of its evolution. In this review paper, we discuss that both eras can be, in principle, described by a geometric picture, under the standard of $f(R)$ gravity. We give the fundamental physics motivations and outline the main ingredients of $f(R)$ inflation, quintessence and cosmography. This wants to be a quick summary of $f(R)$ paradigm without claiming of completeness.
We assess the effects of a collision between two vacuum bubbles in the thin-wall limit. After describing the outcome of a generic collision possessing the expected hyperbolic symmetry, we focus on collisions experienced by a bubble containing positive vacuum energy, which could in principle contain our observable universe. We provide criteria governing whether the post-collision domain wall accelerates towards or away from this "observation" bubble, and discuss the implications for observers located at various positions inside of the bubble. Then, we identify the class of solutions which have …
We propose a new four-parameter entropy function that generalizes the Tsallis, Rényi, Barrow, Sharma-Mittal, Kaniadakis and Loop Quantum Gravity entropies for suitable limits of the parameters. Consequently, we address the early and late universe cosmology corresponding to the proposed four-parameter entropy function. As a result, it turns out that the entropic cosmology from the generalized entropy function can unify the early inflation to the late dark energy era of the universe. In such a unified scenario, we find that -- (1) the inflation era is described by a quasi de-Sitter evolution of …
We discuss how primordial (e.g. inflationary) non-Gaussianity in the cosmological perturbations is left imprinted in the Large-Scale Structure of the universe. Our findings show that the information on the primordial non-Gaussianity set on super-Hubble scales flows into Post-Newtonian terms, leaving an observable imprint in the Large-Scale Structure. Future high-precision measurements of the statistics of the dark matter density and peculiar velocity fields will allow to pin down the primordial non-Gaussianity, thus representing a tool complementary to studies of the Cosmic Microwave Backgroun…
A statistical quantity suitable for distinguishing simply-connected Robertson-Walker (RW) universes is introduced, and its explicit expressions for the three possible classes of simply-connected RW universes with an uniform distribution of matter are determined. Graphs of the distinguishing mark for each class of RW universes are presented and analyzed. There sprout from our results an improvement on the procedure to extract the topological signature of multiply-connected RW universes, and a refined understanding of that topological signature of these universes studied in previous works.
We study the late-time evolution of the Universe where dark energy (DE) is parametrized by a modified generalized Chaplygin gas (mGCG) on top of cold dark matter (CDM). We also take into account the radiation content of the Universe. In this context, the late stage of the evolution of the universe refers to the epoch where CDM is already clustered into inhomogeneously distributed discrete structures (galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies). Under these conditions, the mechanical approach is an adequate tool to study the Universe deep inside the cell of uniformity. To be more accurate, we st…
The nonbaryonic dark matter of the Universe is assumed to consist of new stable forms of matter. Their stability reflects symmetry of micro world and mechanisms of its symmetry breaking. In the early Universe heavy metastable particles can dominate, leaving primordial black holes (PBHs) after their decay, as well as the structure of particle symmetry breaking gives rise to cosmological phase transitions, from which massive black holes and/or their clusters can originate. PBHs can be formed in such transitions within a narrow interval of masses about $10^{17}$g and, avoiding severe observationa…
We consider five-dimensional cylindric spacetime $V^5$ with foliation of codimension ~1. The leaves of this foliation are four-dimensional "parallel" universes. The metric of five-dimensional spacetime and induced metrics of four-dimensional universes are flat. The "large" fluctuations of the 5-metric are studied. These fluctuations depend only on the coordinate $x^0$, and under these fluctuations the curvature of $V^5$ is not zero. The contribution of the fluctuations in the Feynman path integral over five-dimensional trajectories doesn't change the amplitude of the probability of the real ph…
This thesis tackles the vast question of generating accelerated periods of expansion of the universe. Models loosely related were developed in the early and late universe. In the early universe, generalizations of the Schwinger effect were developed in curved (de Sitter) space and some backreaction effects were estimated. In the late universe, a fractal model was developed and confronted to supernovae data. This relies on the idea of an accelerated expanding universe being nothing but a mirage due to inhomogeneities disposed in a fractal (in this particular model) way. Finally a model of inter…
Quantum fluctuations endow spacetime with a foamy texture. The degree of foaminess is dictated by blackhole physics to be of the holographic type. Applied to cosmology, the holographic foam model predicts the existence of dark energy with critical energy density in the current (late) universe, the quanta of which obey infinite statistics. Furthermore we use the deep similarities between turbulence and the spacetime foam phase of strong quantum gravity to argue that the early universe was in a turbulent regime when it underwent a brief cosmic inflation with a "graceful" transition to a laminar …
In this paper, I discuss the idea that the birth of our Universe may be a result of a quantum transition from a physical continuum with the Euclidean signature to a Lorentzian spacetime. A similar idea was expressed by Andrei D. Sakharov. At the classical level, the idea was studied by George F. R. Ellis and his collaborators, who explored if solutions to the classical Einstein equation exist which admit a change of metric signature. The present paper aims at examining possible realizations of this idea at the level of quantum gravity, in the framework of the Wheeler - DeWitt theory and in the…
It has been believed that topology and signature change of the universe can only happen accompanied by singularities, in classical, or instantons, in quantum, gravity. In this note, we point out however that in the braneworld context, such an event can be understood as a classical, smooth event. We supply some explicit examples of such cases, starting from the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. Topology change of the brane universe can be realised by allowing self-intersecting branes. Signature change in a braneworld is made possible in an everywhere Lorentzian bulk spacetime. In our examples, the boun…
We consider an empty (4+1) dimensional Kaluza-Klein universe with a negative cosmological constant and a Robertson-Walker type metric. It is shown that the solutions to Einstein field equations have degenerate metric and exhibit transitioins from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain. We then suggest a mechanism, based on signature transition which leads to compactification of the internal space in the Lorentzian region as $a \sim |Λ|^{1/2}$. With the assumption of a very small value for the cosmological constant we find that the size of the universe $R$ and the internal scale factor $a$ would be…
Gravitational model of non-minimally coupled Brans Dicke (BD) scalar field $ϕ$ with dynamical unit time-like four vector field is used to study flat Robertson Walker (RW) cosmology in the presence of variable cosmological parameter $V(ϕ)=Λϕ.$ Aim of the paper is to seek cosmological models which exhibit metric signature transition. The problem is studied in both classical and quantum cosmological approach with large values of BD parameter $ω>>1$. Scale factor of RW metric is obtained as $R(t)=6\sqrt{\frac{3}Λ}\cosh\big(\frac{t}{4}\sqrt{\fracΛ{3}}\big)$ which describes nonsingular inflationary …
We consider the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and deep inside the cell of uniformity. At such scales, the Universe is highly inhomogeneous and is filled with inhomogeneities in the form of galaxies and the groups of galaxies. We also suggest that the Universe is filled with a perfect fluid, and its fluctuations have peculiar velocities of the same (non-relativistic) order of magnitude as for the inhomogeneities. In this sense, the inhomogeneities (e.g. galaxies) and fluctuations of perfect fluids are coupled with each other. We clarify some important points of this approach and p…
It is argued that whereas the Shatskiy single rings produced by the gravitational inner field of a spherically symmetric wormhole and the concentric double Einstein rings generated by a toroidal ringhole could not be used without some uncertainty to identify the presence of such tunnelings in the universe or the existence of a parallel universe, the image which the inner gravitational field of a non orientable Klein-bottle hole tunneling would leave by lensing a single luminous source is that of a truncated double spiral, which is a signature that cannot be attributed to any other single or co…
By making use of a class of steep exponential type of potentials, which has been recently used to describe quintessential inflation, we show how a unified picture for both inflation, dark energy and dark matter can emerge entirely through dissipative effects. Dissipation provides a way for extending the applicability of a larger class of these potentials in the sense of leading to a consistent early Universe inflationary picture and producing observables in agreement with the Planck legacy data. Likewise, dissipative effects lead to dark matter production with consistent abundances and, toward…
We consider the quantum description of a toy model universe in which the Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometry emerges from the coherent state of a massless scalar field. Although highly idealised, this simple model allows us to find clear hints supporting the conclusion that the reaction of the de Sitter background to the presence of matter sources induces i) a modified Newtonian dynamics at galactic scales and ii) different values measured for the present Hubble parameter. Both effects stem from the conditions required to have a normalisable quantum state.
The universe is magnetized on all scales probed so far. On the largest scales, galaxies and galaxy clusters host magnetic fields at the micro Gauss level coherent on scales up to ten kpc. Recent observational evidence suggests that even the intergalactic medium in voids could host a weak $\sim 10^{-16}$ Gauss magnetic field, coherent on Mpc scales. An intriguing possibility is that these observed magnetic fields are a relic from the early universe, albeit one which has been subsequently amplified and maintained by a dynamo in collapsed objects. We review here the origin, evolution and signatur…
We study the classical and quantum cosmology of a universe in which the matter source is a massive Dirac spinor field and consider cases where such fields are either free or self-interacting. We focus attention on the spatially flat Robertson-Walker cosmology and classify the solutions of the Einstein-Dirac system in the case of zero, negative and positive cosmological constant $Λ$. For $Λ<0$, these solutions exhibit signature transitions from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain. In the case of massless spinor fields it is found that signature changing solutions do not exist when the field is f…
We dedicate this thesis to the study of signatures coming from the primordial epochs of the universe. We will focus in particular on Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), which may be formed from perturbations generated during inflation and might comprise a fraction of the dark matter in the universe. In the first part of the thesis, we will address the PBH properties at the time of formation, that are their masses, spins and abundance, and investigate the generation of Gravitational Wave (GW) signals during their production. In the second part, we will describe the PBHs evolution across the cosmic h…
Investigations of classical signature change have generally envisaged applications to cosmological models, usually a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model. The purpose has been to avoid the inevitable singularity of models with purely Lorentzian signature, replacing the neighbourhood of the big bang with an initial, singularity free region of Euclidean signture, and a signature change. We here show that signature change can also avoid the singularity of gravitational collapse. We investigate the process of re-birth of Schwarzschild type black holes, modelling it as a double signature chang…
We study Galileon scalar field model by considering the lowest order Galileon term in the lagrangian, $(\partial_μ ϕ)^2 \Boxϕ$ by invoking a field potential. We use Statefinder hierarchy to distinguish the light mass galileon models with different potentials amongst themselves and from the $Λ$CDM behaviour. The $Om$ diagnostic is applied to cosmological dynamics and observational constraints on the model parameters are studied using SN+Hubble+BAO data.
Brane-world models offer the possibility of explaining the late acceleration of the universe via infra-red modifications to General Relativity, rather than a dark energy field. However, one also expects ultra-violet modifications to General Relativity, when high-energy stringy effects in the early universe begin to grow. We generalize the DGP brane-world model via an ultra-violet modification, in the form of a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action. The combination of infra-red and ultra-violet modifications produces an intriguing cosmology. The DGP feature of late-time acceleration without dark…
We simulate the evolution of a dust universe from $z=1089$ to $z=0$ by numerically integrating the Einstein's equation for a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaire-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background spacetime with scalar perturbations which are derived from the matter power spectrum produced with the Code for Anisotropies in the Microwave Background (CAMB). To investigate the effects of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) on the inhomogeneity of the universe, we add an additional decaying, divergenceless and traceless primordial tensor perturbation with its initial amplitude being $3\times 10^{-4}$…
We address the question of regular primordial black holes with de Sitter interior, their remnants and gravitational vacuum solitons G-lumps as heavy dark matter candidates providing signatures for inhomogeneity of early universe, which is severely constrained by the condition that the contribution of these objects in the modern density does not exceed the total density of dark matter. Primordial black holes and their remnants seem to be most elusive among dark matter candidates. However, we reveal a nontrivial property of compact objects with de Sitter interior to induce proton decay or decay …
We study the late-time evolution of the Universe where dark energy (DE) is presented by a barotropic fluid on top of cold dark matter (CDM). We also take into account the radiation content of the Universe. Here by the late stage of the evolution we refer to the epoch where CDM is already clustered into inhomogeneously distributed discrete structures (galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies). Under this condition the mechanical approach is an adequate tool to study the Universe deep inside the cell of uniformity. More precisely, we study scalar perturbations of the FLRW metric due to inhomoge…
In this paper, we consider the Universe at the late stage of its evolution and deep inside the cell of uniformity. At these scales, the Universe is filled with inhomogeneously distributed discrete structures (galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies). Supposing that the Universe contains also the cosmological constant and a perfect fluid with a negative constant equation of state (EoS) parameter $ω$ (e.g., quintessence, phantom or frustrated network of topological defects), we investigate scalar perturbations of the FRW metrics due to inhomogeneities. Our analysis shows that, to be compatible…
It is obtained that dark energy emerges from higher-derivative gravity with anon-linear terms proportional to $R^2$ and $R^3$ with $R$ being the Ricci scalar curvature. Interestingly, it is found that the universe begins with acceleration, which continues for a short period. Later on,it decelerates driven by radiation and subsequently by matter. Two components of dark energy are found here.In the early universe, dark energy mimics quintessence giving high vlue of initial density $\sim 10^{75} {\rm GeV}^4$ at Planck scale. But, in the late universe, dark energy behaves like phantom giving curre…
