Gravitational model of non-minimally coupled Brans Dicke (BD) scalar field $ϕ$ with dynamical unit time-like four vector field is used to study flat Robertson Walker (RW) cosmology in the presence of variable cosmological parameter $V(ϕ)=Λϕ.$ Aim of the paper is to seek cosmological models which exhibit metric signature transition. The problem is studied in both classical and quantum cosmological approach with large values of BD parameter $ω>>1$. Scale factor of RW metric is obtained as $R(t)=6\sqrt{\frac{3}Λ}\cosh\big(\frac{t}{4}\sqrt{\fracΛ{3}}\big)$ which describes nonsingular inflationary universe in Lorentzian signature sector. Euclidean signature sector of our solution describes a re-collapsing universe and is obtained from analytic continuation of the Lorentzian sector by exchanging $t\to it$ as $R(t)=6\sqrt{\frac{3}Λ}\cos\big(\frac{t}{4}\sqrt{\fracΛ{3}}\big).$
Dynamical vector field together with the BD scalar field are treated as fluid with time dependent barotropic index. They have regular (dark) matter dominance in the Euclidean (Lorentzian) sector. We solved Wheeler De
Witt (WD) quantum wave equation of the cosmological system. Assuming a discrete non-zero ADM mass $M_j=4\sqrt{2}(2j+1)\sqrt{\fracΛ{3}}$ with $j=0,1,2,\cdots$, we obtained solutions of the WD equation as simple harmonic quantum Oscillator eigen functionals described by Hermite polynomials. Absolute values of these eigen functionals have nonzero values on the hypersurface $R=6\sqrt{\frac{3}Λ}$ in which metric field has signature degeneracy. Our eigen functionals describe nonzero probability of the space time with Lorentzian (Euclidean) signature for $R>6\sqrt{\frac{3}Λ}$ ($R<6\sqrt{\frac{3}Λ}$). Maximal probability corresponds to the ground state $j=0.$
As an alternative to dark matter models we use generalized Jordan-Brans-Dicke scalar-vector-tensor (JBD-SVT) gravity model to study the behavior of the rotational velocities of test particles moving around galaxies. To do so we consider an interaction potential $U(ϕ,N_μ)$ between the Brans-Dicke scalar field $ϕ$ and time like dynamical four-vector field $N_μ$ which plays as four velocity of a preferred reference frame. We show that at in weak field limits metric solution of the galaxy under consideration reaches to a modified Schwarzschild-de Sitter space in which mass of the vector field play…
We present a fully model-independent analysis of the extensive observations reported by a recent ether-drift experiment in Berlin. No a priori assumption is made on the nature of a hypothetical preferred frame. We find a remarkable consistency with an Earth's cosmic motion exhibiting an average declination angle |γ|\sim 43^o and with values of the RMS anisotropy parameter (1/2-β+δ) that are one order of magnitude larger than the presently quoted ones. This might represent the first modern indication for a preferred frame and for a non-zero anisotropy of the speed of light.
We consider the twin paradox of special relativity in a universe with a compact spatial dimension. Such topology allows two twin observers to remain inertial yet meet periodically. The paradox is resolved by considering the relationship of each twin to a preferred inertial reference frame which exists in such a universe because global Lorentz invariance is broken. The twins can perform "global" experiments to determine their velocities with respect to the preferred reference frame (by sending light signals around the cylinder, for instance). Here we discuss the possibility of doing so with loc…
According to Karl Popper assumptions are statements used to construct theories. During the construction of a theory whether the assumptions are either true or false turn out to be irrelevant in view of the fact that, actually, they gain their scientific value when the deductions derived from them suffice to explain observations. Science is enriched with assumptions of all kinds and physics is not exempted. Beyond doubt, some assumptions have been greatly beneficial for physics. They are usually embraced based on the kind of problems expected to be solved in a given moment of a science. Some ha…
A scalar theory of gravity with a preferred reference frame is presented. It is insisted on the dynamics, which involves a (non-trivial) extension of Newton's second law, and on the new version (v2) with isotropic space metric. We display the energy conservation equation obtained with v2. Then the principles of the asymptotic post-Newtonian approximation are discussed in some detail. The results of its application to the motion of a small extended body in a weakly-gravitating system are given and discussed: the weak equivalence principle was violated in v1, due to its anisotropic space metric …
A class of theories of gravitation that naturally incorporates preferred frames of reference is presented. The underlying space-time geometry consists of a partial parallelization of space-time and has properties of Riemann-Cartan as well as teleparallel geometry. Within this geometry, the kinematic quantities of preferred frames are associated with torsion fields. Using a variational method, it is shown in which way action functionals for this geometry can be constructed. For a special action the field equations are derived and the coupling to spinor fields is discussed.
Model of Riemann-Cartan gravity with varying signature of metric is considered. The basic dynamical variables of the formalism are vierbein, spin connection, and an internal metric in the tangent space. The corresponding action contains new terms, which depend on these fields. In general case the signature of the metric is determined dynamically. The Minkowski signature is preferred dynamically because the configurations with the other signatures are dynamically suppressed. We also discuss briefly the motion of particles in the background of the modified black hole configuration, in which insi…
A consistent quantization scheme for imaginary-mass field is proposed. It is related to an appropriate choice of the synchronization procedure (definition of time), which guarantee an absolute causality in agreement with Lorentz covariance. In that formulation a possible existence of field excitations (tachyons) distinguish an inertial frame (tachyon privileged frame of reference) {\em via} spontaneous breaking of the so called synchronization group. In this scheme relativity principle is broken but Lorentz symmetry is exactly preserved in agreement with local properties of the observed world.
The fact that quantum gravity does not admit an invariant vacuum state has far-reaching consequences for all physics. It points out that space could not be empty, and we return to the notion of an aether. Such a concept requires a preferred reference frame for describing universe expansion and black holes. Here, we intend to find a reference system or class of metrics that could be attributed to ``aether''. We discuss a vacuum and quantum gravity from three essential viewpoints: universe expansion, black hole existence, and quantum decoherence.
Historically, the Michelson-Morley experiment has played a crucial role for abandoning the idea of a preferred reference frame, the ether, and for replacing Lorentzian Relativity with Einstein's Special Relativity. However, our re-analysis of the Michelson-Morley original data, consistently with the point of view already expressed by other authors, shows that the experimental observations have been misinterpreted. Namely, the fringe shifts point to a non-zero observable Earth's velocity v_obs = 8.4 +/- 0.5 km/s. Assuming the existence of a preferred reference frame, and using Lorentz transform…
We describe a general framework for analyzing orbits of systems containing compact objects (neutron stars or black holes) in a class of Lagrangian-based alternative theories of gravity that also admit a global preferred reference frame. The framework is based on a modified Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann (EIH) formalism developed by Eardley and by Will, generalized to include the possibility of Lorentz-violating, preferred-frame effects. It uses a post-Newtonian $N$-body Lagrangian with arbitrary parameters that depend on the theory of gravity and on "sensitivities" that encode the effects of the bod…
The foundation of modern cosmology relies on the so-called cosmological principle which states an homogeneous and isotropic distribution of matter in the universe on large scales. However, recent observations, such as the temperature anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, the motion of galaxies in the universe, the polarization of quasars and the acceleration of the cosmic expansion, indicate preferred directions in the sky. If these directions have a cosmological origin, the cosmological principle would be violated, and modern cosmology should be reconsidered. In this …
The presence of a non-zero cosmological term in Einstein field equations can be interpreted as the physical possibility for preferred reference frames without breaking of general covariance. This possibility is used in the process of linearizing Einstein field equations in a de Sitter background, and in formulating the resulting equations in the framework of gravitoelectromagnetism. It is proposed that this set of equations only applies to the physical vacuum and not to baryonic (normal) matter.
The gravitational wave signature emitted from a merging binary depends on the orientation of an observer relative to the binary. Previous studies suggest that emission along the total initial or total final angular momenta leads to both the strongest and simplest signal from a precessing compact binary. In this paper we describe a concrete counterexample: a binary with $m_1/m_2=4$, $a_1=0.6 \hat{x} = -a_2$, placed in orbit in the x,y plane. We extract the gravitational wave emission along several proposed emission directions, including the initial (Newtonian) orbital angular momentum; the fina…
We expand on the idea that spacetime signature should be treated as a dynamical degree of freedom in quantum field theory. It has been argued that the probability distribution for signature, induced by massless free fields, is peaked at the Lorentzian value uniquely in D=4 dimensions. This argument is reviewed, and certain consistency constraints on the generalized signature (i.e. the tangent space metric $η_{ab}(x)=\mbox{diag}[e^{iθ(x)},1,1,1]$) are derived. It is shown that only one dynamical "Wick angle" $θ(x)$ can be introduced in the generalized signature, and the magnitude of fluctuation…
An analysis of the classical-quantum correspondence shows that it needs to identify a preferred class of coordinate systems, which defines a torsionless connection. One such class is that of the locally-geodesic systems, corresponding to the Levi-Civita connection. Another class, thus another connection, emerges if a preferred reference frame is available. From the classical Hamiltonian that rules geodesic motion, the correspondence yields two distinct Klein-Gordon equations and two distinct Dirac-type equations in a general metric, depending on the connection used. Each of these two equations…
A scalar bimetric theory of gravity with a preferred reference frame is summarized. Dynamics is governed by an extension of Newton's second law. In the static case, geodesic motion is recovered together with Newton's attraction field. In the static spherical case, Schwarzschild's metric is found. Asymptotic schemes of post-Newtonian (PN) and post-Minkowskian (PM) approximation are built, each based on associating a conceptual family of systems with the given system. At the 1PN approximation, there is no preferred-frame effect for photons, hence the standard predictions of GR for photons are go…
We present a detailed investigation of a sub-dominant oscillating scalar field ('early dark energy', EDE) in the context of resolving the Hubble tension. Consistent with earlier work, but without relying on fluid approximations, we find that a scalar field frozen due to Hubble friction until ${\rm log}_{10}(z_c)\sim3.5$, reaching $ρ_{\rm EDE}(z_c)/ρ_{\rm tot}\sim10$%, and diluting faster than matter afterwards can bring cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations, supernovae luminosity distances, and the late-time estimate of the Hubble constant from the SH0ES collaborati…
Although the standard generally-covariant Dirac equation is unique in a topologically simple spacetime, it has been shown that it leads to non-uniqueness problems for the Hamiltonian and energy operators, including the non-uniqueness of the energy spectrum. These problems should be solved by restricting the choice of the Dirac gamma field in a consistent way. Recently, we proposed to impose the value of the rotation rate of the tetrad field. This is not necessarily easy to implement and works only in a given reference frame. Here, we propose that the gamma field should change only by constant …
