Markarian (Mrk) 180 is a BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object located at a redshift of 0.045 and a potential candidate for high-energy cosmic ray acceleration. We have analyzed the Fermi Large Area Telescope (\textit{Fermi}-LAT) $γ$-ray data of Mrk 180 collected over a period of 12.8 years and found no significant enhancement in the flux from the long-term $γ$-ray light curve. We have also analyzed Swift X-ray, ultraviolet \& optical, and X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) data to construct the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED). The SED has been modeled with one-zone pure leptonic and lepto-hadronic scenarios to explain the underlying physics of multi-wavelength emission. The pure leptonic model and the two lepto-hadronic models, viz., (i) line-of-sight interactions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECR; $E\gtrsim 10^{17}$ eV) with the cosmic background radiation and (ii) the interactions of relativistic protons with the cold protons in the jet, have been compared in our work. Moreover, an earlier study has associated Mrk 180 with the Telescope Array (TA) hotspot of UHECRs at $E>57$ EeV. This speculation motivates us to check whether ultrahigh energy protons and iron nuclei can reach the earth from Mrk 180. After comparing the results of our simulation with the current observational data, we find that Mrk 180 is unlikely to be a source of the UHECR events contributing to the TA hotspot for conservative strengths of extragalactic magnetic fields.
We examine the applicability of the stochastic electron acceleration to two high synchrotron peaked blazars, Mrk 421 and Mrk 501, assuming synchrotron self-Compton emission of gamma-rays. Our model considers an emitting region moving at relativistic speed, where non-thermal electrons are accelerated and attain a steady-state energy spectrum together with the photons they emit. The kinetic equations of the electrons and photons are solved numerically, given a stationary wave number spectrum of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disturbances, which are responsible for the electron acceleration and es…
ANTARES is the largest high-energy neutrino telescope in the Northern Hemisphere. This contribution presents the results of a search, based on the ANTARES data collected over 17 months between November 2014 and April 2016, for high energy neutrino emission in coincidence with TeV $γ$-ray flares from Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, two bright BL Lac extragalactic sources highly variable in flux, detected by the HAWC observatory. The analysis is based on an unbinned likelihood-ratio maximization method. The $γ$-ray lightcurves (LC) for each source were used to search for temporally correlated n…
Since the detection of very high energy (VHE) $γ$-rays from Mrk 501, its broad band emission of radiation was mostly and quite effectively modeled using one zone emission scenario. However, broadband spectral and flux variability studies enabled by the multiwavelength campaigns carried out during the recent years have revealed rather complex behavior of Mrk 501. The observed emission from Mrk 501 could be due to a complex superposition of multiple emission zones. Moreover new evidences of detection of very hard intrinsic $γ$-ray spectra obtained from {\it Fermi}--LAT observations have challeng…
We present an analysis of all the archival high resolution spectra of the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk~335 obtained with Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board \textit{XMM-Newton}. The spectra show rich emission and absorption features in low and intermediate flux intervals. We model the emission lines with the \textsc{pion\_xs} grid and try to find any possible correlation between the properties of the emitting gas and the source flux. Current data does not allow detailed trace of the response of the line emitting gas to the X-ray flux of Mrk~335, but the flux of the X-ray lines i…
We report on the detection of excess hard X-ray emission from the TeV BL Lac object Mrk421 during the historical low-flux state of the source in January 2013. NuSTAR observations were conducted four times between MJD56294 and MJD56312 with a total exposure of 80.9 ksec. The source flux in the 3-40 keV range was nearly constant except for MJD56307, when the average flux level increased by a factor of three. Throughout the exposure, the X-ray spectra of Mrk421 were well represented by a steep power-law model with a photon index of 3.1, although a significant excess was noted above 20 keV in the …
In this work, we report on the detection of enhanced TeV gamma- ray emission from the high synchrotron-peaked blazar Mrk 421 with the TACTIC telescope on the night of December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019). We use data from the TACTIC observations of Mrk 421 for one week during December 25-31, 2014 (MJD 57016-57022) in this study. The TACTIC observation on December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019) alone results in the detection of 86+-17 gamma- ray like events from Mrk 421 with a statistical significance of 5.17sigma in a livetime of ~ 2.2 hours above an energy threshold of 0.85 TeV. The high statistics (higher th…
We investigate the X-ray and $γ$-ray flares of Mrk 421 on 2008 June 6-15 using the synchrotron self- Compton(SSC) model with electron acceleration, in which an evident correlation between the X-ray and $γ$-ray bands appears, while no significant correlation between the optical and X-ray band is observed. We argue that the emission from Mrk 421 may originate from two different components. One is the steady component from the outer region that is mainly attributed to the optical band, in which the electrons are accelerated by first-order Fermi acceleration mechanism. We use a steady electron spe…
Various attempts have been made in the literature at describing the origin and the physical mechanisms behind flaring events in blazars with radiative emission models, but detailed properties of multi-wavelength (MWL) light curves still remain difficult to reproduce. We have developed a versatile radiative code, based on a time-dependent treatment of particle acceleration, escape and radiative cooling, allowing us to test different scenarios to connect the continuous low-state emission self-consistently with that during flaring states. We consider flares as weak perturbations of the quiescent …
It is well known that the flat radio spectrum is a common property in the spectral energy distribution of blazars. Although the one-zone leptonic models are generally successful in explaining the multi-wave band emission, they are problematic in reproducing the radio spectrum. In the study of Mrk 421, one-zone models suggest that in order to avoid overproducing the radio flux, the minimum electron Lorentz factor should be larger than a few hundred at least, even considering the synchrotron self-absorption effect. This result suggests that the model predicted spectral index in the radio band of…
Flux distribution is an important tool to understand the variability processes in active galactic nuclei. We now have available a great deal of observational evidences pointing towards the presence of log-normal components in the high energy light curves, and different models have been proposed to explain these data. Here, we collect some of the recent developments on this topic using the well-known blazar Mrk 501 as example of complex and interesting aspects coming from its flux distribution in different energy ranges and at different timescales. The observational data we refer to are those c…
Context: Part of the very high energy $γ$-ray radiation coming from extragalactic sources is absorbed through the pair production process on the extragalactic background light photons. Extragalactic magnetic fields alter the trajectories of these cascade pairs and, in turn, convert cosmic background photons to gamma-ray energies by inverse Compton scattering. These secondary photons can form an extended halo around bright VHE sources. Aims: We searched for an extended emission around the bright blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 using the MAGIC telescope data. Methods: If extended emission is present…
The broadband X-ray emission from type 1 active galactic nuclei, dominated by a powerlaw continuum, is thought to arise from repeated inverse Compton scattering of seed optical/UV photons by energetic electrons in a hot corona. The seed optical/UV photons are assumed to arise from an accretion disc but a direct observational evidence has remained elusive. Here we report the discovery of variations in the UV emission preceding the variations in the X-ray emission based on $\sim100\,\mathrm{ks}$ XMM-Newton observations of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 493. We find the UV emission to lead …
We present the first results from a detailed spectral-timing analysis of a long ($\sim$130 ks) XMM-Newton observation and quasi-simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift observations of the highly-accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. The broadband (0.3$-$50 keV) spectrum reveals the presence of a strong soft X-ray excess emission below $\sim$1.5 keV, iron K$_α$ emission complex at $\sim$6$-$7 keV and a `Compton hump' at $\sim$15$-$30 keV. We find that the relativistic reflection from a high-density accretion disc with a broken power-law emissivity profile can simultaneously explain the soft X-…
The TeV BL Lac object Markarian 501 has been the subject of a 4.5 month multi-instrument campaign conducted in 2009, which provided an excellent temporal and energy coverage from radio to very high energy gamma rays (>100 GeV, VHE). During the campaign, Mrk 501 was mostly in a comparably low state, but for two flares at VHE with very different characteristics. While the second flare seems to be correlated with a moderate increase in the X-ray flux, the first one is most likely accompanied by a shift of the synchrotron bump towards higher energies. Moreover, the first flare occurs during an abr…
The X-ray emission in BL Lac objects is believed to be dominated by synchrotron emission from their relativistic jets. However, when the jet emission is not strong, one could expect signatures of X-ray emission from inverse Compton scattering of accretion disc photons by the corona. Moreover, the observed X-ray variability can also originate in the disc, and gets propagated and amplified by the jet. Here, we present results on the BL Lac object Mrk 421 using the NuSTAR data acquired during 2017 when the source was in a moderate X-ray brightness state. For comparison with high jet activity, we …
Here we report our recent study on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the high frequency BL Lac object Mrk 421 in different luminosity states. We used a full-fledged chi2-minimization procedure instead of more commonly used "eyeball" fit to model the observed flux of the source (from optical to very high energy), with a Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) emission mechanism. Our study shows that the synchrotron power and peak frequency remain constant with varying source activity, and the magnetic field decreases with the source activity while the break energy of electron spectrum and the Do…
The X-ray spectra of some active galactic nuclei (AGN) show a soft X-ray excess, emission in excess to the extrapolated primary X-ray continuum below 2 keV. Recent studies have shown that this soft excess can be described well as originating from either a relativistic ionized reflection, the extreme blurring of the reprocessed emission from the innermost region of the accretion disk, or Comptonization from an optically thick and warm region called the 'warm corona', in which electron scattering is the dominant source of opacity. To constrain the origin of the soft excess in the Seyfert 1 galax…
We report on long-term multi-wavelength monitoring of blazar Mrk~421 from 2010 to 2011. The source exhibited extreme X-ray flares in 2010. Our research group performed optical photopolarimetric follow-up observations using the Kanata telescope. In 2010, the variability in the X-ray band was significant, while the optical and ultraviolet (UV) flux decreased gradually. Polarization properties also exhibited unique variability in 2010, suggesting the presence of systematic component of polarization and magnetic field alignment for the emergence of a new polarized emission region. In contrast, in …
Mrk 1239 is a highly polarized NLS1 in the optical band, whose $0.3-3$ keV spectrum has remained remarkably consistent over more than two decades of observation. Previous analysis of this object suggested that the soft X-ray band was dominated by emission lines (collisionally and/or photoionized) from the distant host galaxy as the X-ray emission from the central engine was highly obscured. New XMM-Newton data of Mrk 1239 are presented here to investigate the soft X-ray band of this galaxy with high resolution. The first RGS spectra of this source reveal a plethora of ionized emission lines or…
There is an increasing number of observational evidence that very high energy gamma-rays in radio-loud active galactic nuclei are produced in the direct vicinity of a supermassive black hole (SMBH), close to the base of a relativistic jet. In the case of some blazars, the angle between the jet axis and the observer's line of sight is smaller than the angular extent of the jet. Gamma-rays that are produced close to SMBH therefore have to propagate in the nonthermal radiation of the extended jet before reaching the observer. This gamma-ray emission can be strongly absorbed in the extended jet ra…
We present an extensive study of 72 archival Chandra light curves of the high-frequency-peaked type blazar Mrk 421, the first strong extragalactic object to be detected at TeV energies. Between 2000 and 2015 Mrk 421 often displayed intraday variability in the 0.3-10.0 keV energy range, as quantified through fractional variability amplitudes that range up to 21.3 per cent. A variability duty cycle of ~84 per cent is present in these data. Variability timescales, with values ranging from 5.5 to 30.5 ks, appear to be present in seven of these observations. Discrete correlation function analyses s…
We present results on Mrk 573 obtained as part of the CHandra survey of Extended Emission-line Regions in nearby Seyfert galaxies (CHEERS). Previous studies showed that this source features a biconical emission in the soft X-ray band closely related with the Narrow Line Region as mapped by the [O iii] emission line and the radio emission, though on a smaller scale; we investigate the properties of soft X-ray emission from this source with new deep Chandra observations. Making use of the subpixel resolution of the Chandra/ACIS image and PSF-deconvolution, we resolve and study substructures in e…
We present XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Swift and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 in a protracted low state in 2018 and 2019. The X-ray flux is at the lowest level so far observed, and the extremely low continuum flux reveals a host of soft X-ray emission lines from photoionised gas. The simultaneous UV flux drop suggests that the variability is intrinsic to the source, and we confirm this with broad-band X-ray spectroscopy. The dominance of the soft X-ray lines at low energies and distant reflection at high energies is therefore due to the respective emi…
The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) Mrk 335 has been continuously monitored with Swift since May 2007 when it fell into a long-lasting, X-ray low-flux interval. Results from the nearly 11 years of monitoring are presented here. Structure functions are used to measure the UV-optical and X-ray power spectra. The X-ray structure function measured between 10-100 days is consistent with the flat, low-frequency part of the power spectrum measured previously in Mrk 335. The UV-optical structure functions of Mrk 335 are comparable with those of other Seyfert 1 galaxies and of Mrk 335 itself when i…
The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 was one of the X-ray brightest AGN, but it has systematically faded since 2007. Here, we report the discovery with Swift of a sequence of bright and rapid X-ray flare events that reveal the emergence of Mrk 335 from its ultra-deep multiyear low state. Results are based on our dedicated multiyear monitoring with Swift. Unlike other bright AGN, the optical-UV is generally not correlated with the X-rays in Mrk 335 on a timescale of days to months. This fact either implies the absence of a direct link between the two emission components; or else implies tha…
We investigate the peculiar properties of a large TeV gamma-ray flare from Mrk~501 detected during the 2009 multiwavelength campaign. We identify the counterpart of the flare in the Fermi/LAT telescope data and study its spectral and timing characteristics. A strong order-of-magnitude increase of the very-high-energy gamma-ray flux during the flare was not accompanied by an increase in the X-ray flux, so that the flare was one of the "orphan"-type TeV flares observed in BL Lacs. The flare lasted about 1 month at energies above 10 GeV. The flaring source spectrum in the 10-200 GeV range was ver…
Blazars are prime candidate sources for the high energy neutrinos recently detected by IceCube. Being one of the brightest sources in the extragalactic X-ray and $γ$-ray sky as well as one of the nearest blazars to Earth, Mrk 421 is an excellent source for testing the scenario of the blazar-neutrino connection. Here, we model the spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 during a 13-day flare in 2010 with unprecedented multi-wavelength coverage, and calculate the respective neutrino flux. We find a correlation between the $>1$ PeV neutrino and photon fluxes, in all energy bands. Using typical Ic…
We reviewed X-ray flux and spectral variability properties studied to date by various X-ray satellites for Mrk 421 and PKS 2155-304, which are TeV emitting blazars. Mrk 421 and PKS 2155-304 are the most X-ray luminous blazars in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively. Blazars show flux and spectral variabilities in the complete electromagnetic spectrum on diverse timescales ranging from a few minutes to hours, days, weeks, months and even several years. The flux and spectral variability on different timescales can be used to constrain the size of the emitting region, estimate the …
For the first time, Kataoka \& Stawarz reported a clear detection of a hard X-ray excess, above $\gtrsim$20 keV, in the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object Mrk 421. We find that this feature may not be produced by the low-energy part of the same electron population that produced the Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray. Because of that it is required that the power-law electron energy go down to $γ_{\rm min}\approx19$, which predicts a very strong radio emission (radio flux larger than the observed) even considering the synchrotron self-absorption effect. We investigate the possibility of this excess being pro…
X-ray observations of the unique NLS1 galaxy Mrk 1239 spanning 18-years are presented. Data from XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift and NuSTAR are combined to obtain a broad-band, multi-epoch view of the source. There is spectral variability in the 3-10 keV band over the 18-years. An analysis of the NuSTAR and Suzaku light curves also suggests rapid variability in the 3-10 keV band, which is consistent with the NLS1 definition of the source. However, no variability is seen below 3 keV on any timescale. Two distinct physical models are adopted to describe the data above and below ~3 keV. The low energie…
Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 are two close, bright and well-studied high-synchrotron-peaked blazars, which feature bright and persistent GeV and TeV emission. We use the longest and densest dataset of unbiased observations of these two sources, obtained at TeV and GeV energies during five years with FACT and Fermi-LAT. To characterize the variability and derive constraints on the emission mechanism, we augment the dataset with contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations from radio to X-rays. We correlate the light curves, identify individual flares in TeV energies and X-rays, and look for inter-band …
We report on long-term multi-wavelength monitoring of blazar Mrk 421 by the GASP-WEBT collaboration and Steward Observatory, and by the Swift and Fermi satellites. We study the source behaviour in the period 2007-2015, characterized by several extreme flares. The ratio between the optical, X-ray, and γ-ray fluxes is very variable. The γ-ray flux variations show fair correlation with the optical ones starting from 2012. We analyse spectropolarimetric data and find wavelength-dependence of the polarisation degree (P), which is compatible with the presence of the host galaxy, and no wavelength-de…
Multi-epoch X-ray spectroscopy (0.3-25 keV) of the Seyfert 1.2 galaxy Mrk 79 (UGC 3973) spanning nearly eight years and a factor of three in broadband flux are analysed. The data are obtained at seven epochs with either XMM-Newton or Suzaku. Comparison with contemporaneous RXTE monitoring indicate that all flux states of Mrk 79 are represented by the data. The spectra are fitted in a self-consistent manner adopting a power law and ionised reflection to describe the broadband continuum. Modification of the spectra by a distant photoionised medium, seen predominantly in emission, are also includ…
We present $Chandra$ ACIS imaging spectroscopy of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Mrk 34. We identify spatially and spectrally resolved features in the band that includes Fe K$α$, Fe XXV and Fe XXVI. These features indicate high-velocity ($\gtrsim15,000\,\rm{km\,s}^{-1}$ line-of-sight) material separated spanning $\sim$0.5 arcsec, within $\sim200$ pc of the nucleus. This outflow could have deprojected velocities $\sim12-28\times$ greater than the [O III] emitting outflows, and could potentially dominate the kinetic power in the outflow. This emission may point to the origins of the optical…
Sub-arcsecond imaging of the X-ray emission in the type 2 AGN Mrk 78 with Chandra shows complex structure with spectral variations on scales from $\sim$200 pc to $\sim$ 2 kpc. Overall the X-ray emission is aligned E-W with the radio (3.6 cm) and narrow emission line region as mapped in [OIII], with a marked E-W asymmetry. The Eastern X-ray emission is mostly in a compact knot coincident with the location where the radio source is deflected, while the Western X-ray emission forms a loop or shell $\sim$2 kpc from the nucleus with radius $\sim$0.7 kpc. There is suggestive evidence of shocks in bo…
Strong X-ray and $γ$--ray flares have been detected in February 2010 from the high synchrotron peaked blazar Mrk 421 (z=0.031). With the motivation of understanding the physics involved in this flaring activity, we study the variability of the source in X-ray and $γ$--ray energy bands during the period February 10-23, 2010 (MJD 55237-55250). We use near simultaneous X-ray data collected by \emph{MAXI}, \emph{Swift}-XRT and $γ$--ray data collected by \emph{Fermi}-LAT and \emph{TACTIC} along with the optical V-band observations by \emph{SPOL} at Steward Observatory. We observe that the variation…
We present results from daily monitoring of gamma rays in the energy range $\sim0.5$ to $\sim100$ TeV with the first 17 months of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. Its wide field of view of 2 steradians and duty cycle of $>95$% are unique features compared to other TeV observatories that allow us to observe every source that transits over HAWC for up to $\sim6$ hours each sidereal day. This regular sampling yields unprecedented light curves from unbiased measurements that are independent of seasons or weather conditions. For the Crab Nebula as a reference source w…
We investigate the origin of high-energy emission in blazars within the context of the leptohadronic one-zone model. We find that $γ$-ray emission can be attributed to synchrotron radiation either from protons or from secondary leptons produced via photohadronic processes. These possibilities imply differences not only in the spectral energy distribution (SED) but also in the variability signatures, especially in the X- and $γ$-ray regime. Thus, the temporal behavior of each leptohadronic scenario can be used to probe the particle population responsible for the high-energy emission as it can g…
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) originating from innermost regions of blazars can provide unique perspective of some of the burning issues in blazar studies including disk-jet connection, launch of relativistic jets from the central engine, and other extreme conditions near the fast rotating supermassive black holes. However, a number of hurdles associated with searching QPOs in blazars e.g., red-noise dominance, modest significance of the detection and periodic modulation lasting for only a couple of cycles, make it difficult to estimate the true significance of the detection. In this work,…
The well-studied VHE (E >100 GeV) blazar Mrk 501 was observed between March and May 2008 as part of an extensive multiwavelength observation campaign including radio, optical, X-ray and VHE gamma-ray instruments. Mrk 501 was in a low state of activity during the campaign, with a low VHE flux of about 20% the Crab Nebula flux. Nevertheless, significant flux variations could be observed in X-rays as well as $γ$-rays. Overall Mrk 501 showed increased variability when going from radio to gamma-ray energies. The broadband spectral energy distribution during the two different emission states of the …
Six XMM-Newton observations of the bright narrow line Seyfert 1, Mrk 110, from 2004-2020, are presented. The analysis of the grating spectra from the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) reveals a broad component of the He-like Oxygen (OVII) line, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $15900\pm1800$ km s$^{-1}$ measured in the mean spectrum. The broad OVII line in all six observations can be modelled with a face-on accretion disk profile, where from these profiles the inner radius of the line emission is inferred to lie between about 20-100 gravitational radii from the black hole. The d…
Mrk 590 was originally classified as a Seyfert 1 galaxy, but then it underwent dramatic changes: the nuclear luminosity dropped by over two orders of magnitude and the broad emission lines all but disappeared from the optical spectrum. Here we present followup observations to the original discovery and characterization of this "changing look" active galactic nucleus (AGN). The new Chandra and HST observations from 2014 show that Mrk 590 is awakening, changing its appearance again. While the source continues to be in a low state, its soft excess has re-emerged, though not to the previous level.…
Temporal analysis of X-ray binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei have shown that hard X-rays react to variation of soft ones after a time delay. The opposite trend, or soft lag, has only been seen in a few rare Quasi-periodic Oscillations in X-ray binaries and recently for the AGN, 1H 0707-495, on short timescales of ~ 10^3 secs. Here, we report analysis of a XMM-Newton observation of Mrk~1040, which reveals that on the dominant variability timescale of ~ 10^4 secs, the source seems to exhibit soft lags. If the lags are frequency independent, they could be due to reverberation effects of a relat…
Mrk 421 is a high-synchrotron-peaked blazar featuring bright and persistent GeV and TeV emission. We use the longest and densest ongoing unbiased observing campaign obtained at TeV and GeV energies during 5.5 years with the FACT telescope and the Fermi-LAT detector. The contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations were used to characterize the variability of the source and to constrain the underlying physical mechanisms. We study and correlate light curves obtained by nine different instruments from radio to gamma rays and found two significant results. The TeV and X-ray light curves are very…
We have investigated the nature and origin of the Fe K emission lines in Mrk~205 using observations with {\it Suzaku} and {\it XMM-Newton}, aiming to resolve the ambiguity between a broad emission line and multiple unresolved lines of higher ionization. We detect the presence of a narrow Fe K$α$ emission line along with a broad band Compton reflection hump at energies $E>10 \rm \, keV$. These are consistent with reflected emission of hard X-ray photons off a Compton thick material of $N_{\rm H} \ge 2.15\times 10^{24} \rm cm^{-2}$. In addition we detect a partially covering ionized absorption w…
XMM-Newton and NuSTAR multiple exposures allow us to disentangle the different emission components of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and to study the evolution of their different spectral features. In this work, we present the timing and spectral properties of five simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 359. We aim to provide the first broadband spectral modeling of Mrk 359 describing its emission spectrum from the UV up to the hard X-rays. To do this, we performed temporal and spectral data analysis, characterising the amplitude and spectral cha…
We have assembled the historical variability data of Mrk 421 at radio 15 GHz, X-ray and gamma-ray bands, spanning about 6.3, 10.3 and 7.5 yr, respective- ly. We analyzed the variability by using three methods. The results indicated that there is a period of 287.6 +- 4.4 days for 15 GHz, 309.5 +- 5.8 days for X- ray and 283.4+- 4.7 days for gamma-ray, respectively. This period can be reasonably explained by the nonballistic helical motion of the emitting material. The cor- relation analysis suggested that the variabilities of radio 15 GHz, X-ray and 0-ray are remarkable correlated, and the emis…
The origin of radio emission in the majority of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is still poorly understood. Various competing mechanisms are likely involved in the production of radio emission and precise diagnostic tools are needed to disentangle them, of which variability is among the most powerful. For the first time, we show evidence for significant radio variability at 5 GHz at milli-arcsecond scales on days to weeks time scales in the highly accreting and extremely radio-quiet (RQ) Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) Mrk110. The simultaneous Swift/XRT light curve indicates stronger soft than hard…
We derive lower bounds on intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMFs) from upper limits on the pair echo emission from the blazar Mrk 501, that is, delayed GeV emission from secondary $e^{-}e^{+}$ pairs produced via interactions of primary TeV gamma rays with the cosmic infrared background. Utilizing only simultaneous GeV-TeV light curves observed by VERITAS, MAGIC and {\it Fermi}-LAT during a multiwavelength campaign in 2009 that included a TeV flare, bounds are deduced on the IGMF strength of $B \gtrsim 10^{-20} {\rm G}$ at 90% confidence level for a field coherence length of 1 kpc. Since our anal…
Radio-to-TeV observations of the bright nearby (z=0.034) blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501), performed from December 2012 to April 2018, are used to study the emission mechanisms in its relativistic jet. We examined the multi-wavelength variability and the correlations of the light curves obtained by eight different instruments, including the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT), observing Mrk 501 in very high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays at TeV energies. We identified individual TeV and X-ray flares and found a sub-day lag between variability in these two bands. Simultaneous TeV and X-ray variations…
We present the results of our 600 ks RGS observation as part of the multiwavelength campaign on Mrk 509. The very high quality of the spectrum allows us to investigate the ionized outflow with an unprecedented accuracy due to the long exposure and the use of the RGS multipointing mode. We detect multiple absorption lines from the interstellar medium and from the ionized absorber in Mrk 509. A number of emission components are also detected, including broad emission lines consistent with an origin in the broad line region, the narrow OVII forbidden emission line and also (narrow) radiative reco…
We present results from a deep spectral analysis of all the Swift observations of Mrk 421 from April 2006 to July 2006, when it reached its largest X-ray flux recorded until 2006. The peak flux was about 85 milli-Crab in the 2.0-10.0 keV band, with the peak energy (Ep) of the spectral energy distribution (SED) laying often at energies larger than 10 keV. We performed spectral analysis of the Swift observations investigating the trends of the spectral parameters in terms of acceleration and energetic features phenomenologically linked to the SSC model parameters, predicting their effects in the…
