We present results from a deep spectral analysis of all the Swift observations of Mrk 421 from April 2006 to July 2006, when it reached its largest X-ray flux recorded until 2006. The peak flux was about 85 milli-Crab in the 2.0-10.0 keV band, with the peak energy (Ep) of the spectral energy distribution (SED) laying often at energies larger than 10 keV. We performed spectral analysis of the Swift observations investigating the trends of the spectral parameters in terms of acceleration and energetic features phenomenologically linked to the SSC model parameters, predicting their effects in the gamma-ray band, in particular the spectral shape expected in the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope-LAT band. We confirm that the X-ray spectrum is well described by a log-parabolic distribution close to Ep, with the peak flux of the SED (Sp) being correlated with Ep, and Ep anti-correlated with the curvature parameter (b). During the most energetic flares the UV-to-soft-X-ray spectral shape requires an electron distribution spectral index s about 2.3. Present analysis shows that the UV-to-X-ray emission from Mrk 421 is likely to be originated by a population of electrons that is actually curved, with a low energy power-law tail. The observed spectral curvature is consistent both with stochastic acceleration or energy dependent acceleration probability mechanisms, whereas the power-law slope form XRT-UVOT data is very close to that inferred from the GRBs X-ray afterglow and in agreement with the universal first-order relativistic shock acceleration models. This scenario hints that the magnetic turbulence may play a twofold role: spatial diffusion relevant to the first order process and momentum diffusion relevant to the second order process.
Various attempts have been made in the literature at describing the origin and the physical mechanisms behind flaring events in blazars with radiative emission models, but detailed properties of multi-wavelength (MWL) light curves still remain difficult to reproduce. We have developed a versatile radiative code, based on a time-dependent treatment of particle acceleration, escape and radiative cooling, allowing us to test different scenarios to connect the continuous low-state emission self-consistently with that during flaring states. We consider flares as weak perturbations of the quiescent …
The blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) is one of the brightest sources in the extragalactic X-ray/TeV sky. It is also one of the fastest varying TeV $γ$-ray sources, showing flaring activity on time scales as short as tens of minutes. To know the level of activity of this source, Tluczykont et al. (2007) calculated the fraction of time spent by Mrk 421 in flaring states with fluxes above 1 Crab at TeV energies (i.e., TeV - duty cycle). Here we present an alternative approach to calculate the TeV duty cycle of Mrk 421 taking advantage of the continuous monitoring of the source by the Milagro observ…
Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) is one the brightest and closest (z=0.031) blazars known (de Vaucouleurs et al 1991). It is also one of the fastest varying TeV $γ$-ray sources, with a flaring activity on time scales as short as tens of minutes. The activity of Mrk 421 at different frequencies may reflect the radiation mechanisms involved. Tluczykont et al. (2007) estimated the TeV activity of Mrk 421 through calculating the fraction of time spent in flaring states at TeV energies (TeV duty cycle) by using data from several imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Since IACT observations are b…
The energy dissipation mechanism in blazar jet is unknown. Blazar's flares could provide insights on this problem. Here we report statistical results of XMM-Newton X-ray flares of Mrk 421. We analyze all public XMM-Newton X-ray observations for Mrk 421, and construct the light curves. Through fitting light curves, we obtain the parameters of flare-profiles, such as peak flux ($F_{\rm p}$) and flaring time duration ($T_{\rm fl}$). It is found that both the distributions of $F_{\rm p}$ and $T_{\rm fl}$ obey a power-law form, with the same index of $α_{\rm F}=α_{\rm T}\approx1$. The statistical p…
Observations at Very High Energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) of the BL Lac object Mrk 501 taken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in four distinct periods between 2004 and 2014 are presented, with focus on the 2012 and 2014 flaring states. The source is detected with high significance above $\sim$ 2 TeV in $\sim$ 13.1 h livetime. The observations comprise low flux states and strong flaring events, which in 2014 show a flux level comparable to the 1997 historical maximum. Such high flux states enable spectral variability and flux variability studies down to a timescale of four minute…

Major outbursts have been observed from the well-known high-energy peaked blazar Markarian 501 since its discovery in 1996. Especially, two episodes of very high energy gamma-ray flaring events during May-July 2005 and June 2012 are of special significance, when the source exhibited extreme HBL-like behavior. The successful standard photohadronic model seems inadequate to explain these extraneous behaviors. We propose a two-zone photohadronic scenario to overcome this problem. In this picture, the low energy regime (zone-1) of the spectrum follows the standard photohadronic interpretation, whi…
The first one started in 2012 July 16 (MJD 56124) and the second one in 2013 April 9 (MJD 56391). The multiwavelength data analysis shows that the $γ$-ray flare observed in 2012 was not detected in the hard-X ray bands. This result is usually interpreted as an "orphan" flare. In 2013, the analysis of the multiwavelength light curves shows that there are two very bright states detected in the optical R-band. The first one in 2013 April 9 (R =11.74 $\pm$ 0.04) and the second one in May 12 (R =11.62 $\pm$ 0.04). Also, high activity states were detected in the soft and hard X-rays. A discrete corr…
In this work, we study the short term flaring activity from the high synchrotron peaked blazar Mrk 501 detected by the FACT and H.E.S.S. telescopes in the energy range 2-20 TeV during June 23-24, 2014 (MJD 56831.86-56831.94). We revisit this major TeV flare of the source in the context of near simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of gamma-rays in MeV-GeV regime with Fermi-LAT, soft X-rays in 0.3-10 keV range with Swift-XRT, hard X-rays in 10-20 keV and 15-50 keV bands with MAXI and Swift-BAT respectively, UV-Optical with Swift-UVOT and 15 GHz radio with OVRO telescope. We have performed …
The high-frequency peaked BL Lac object Mrk421 has shown a strong outburst of activity during February 2010. This high state, first detected by VERITAS on 16th of February, was followed up by H.E.S.S. during four subsequent nights at an average zenith angle of 62.4$^\circ$. In the first night of observations by H.E.S.S., the average flux level above 1 TeV was 4 times the level of the Crab Nebula flux, decreasing to a third of this value over the subsequent observation nights. The H.E.S.S. data shows an energy spectrum compatible with previous measurements, extending up to 20 TeV. The observed …
The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) Mrk 335 has been continuously monitored with Swift since May 2007 when it fell into a long-lasting, X-ray low-flux interval. Results from the nearly 11 years of monitoring are presented here. Structure functions are used to measure the UV-optical and X-ray power spectra. The X-ray structure function measured between 10-100 days is consistent with the flat, low-frequency part of the power spectrum measured previously in Mrk 335. The UV-optical structure functions of Mrk 335 are comparable with those of other Seyfert 1 galaxies and of Mrk 335 itself when i…
We analyze 168 Swift monitoring observations of the nearest broad absorption line quasar Mrk 231 in the UV and X-ray bands, where we detect significant variability in the UV ($\sim$2246Å) light curve with a null probability of $4.3\times10^{-10}$ for a constant model. Separately, from an archival sample of Swift observed active galactic nuclei (AGN), we measure the relation between UV excess variance and luminosity, finding that the normalized UV excess variance decreases with luminosity. Comparing to this mean relation, the normalized UV excess variance of Mrk 231 is smaller, however within t…
The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 was one of the X-ray brightest AGN, but it has systematically faded since 2007. Here, we report the discovery with Swift of a sequence of bright and rapid X-ray flare events that reveal the emergence of Mrk 335 from its ultra-deep multiyear low state. Results are based on our dedicated multiyear monitoring with Swift. Unlike other bright AGN, the optical-UV is generally not correlated with the X-rays in Mrk 335 on a timescale of days to months. This fact either implies the absence of a direct link between the two emission components; or else implies tha…
We present results from multi-wavelength study of intense flaring activity from a high frequency peaked BL Lac object Mrk 421. The source was observed in its flaring state on February 16, 2010 with the $TACTIC$ at energies above 1.5 TeV. Near simultaneous multi-wavelength data were obtained from high energy (MeV-GeV) $γ$--ray observations with \emph{Fermi}--LAT, X--ray observations by the \emph{Swift} and \emph{MAXI} satellites, optical V-band observation by SPOL at \emph{Steward Observatory} and radio 15 GHz observation at OVRO 40 meter-telescope. We have performed a detailed spectral and tem…
It is surprising to find a fact for migration in the peak positions of synchrotron spectra energy distribution component during in the activity epochs of Mrk 421, accompanying with an orphan flaring at the X-ray and GeV-TeV $γ$-ray bands. A geometric interpretation and standard shock or stochastic acceleration models of blazar emission have difficulty reproducing these observed behaviours. The present paper introduces a linear acceleration by integrating the reconnection electric field into the particle transport model for the observed behaviours of Mrk 421. We note that the strong evidence fo…
MeV blazars are a sub--population of the blazar family, exhibiting larger--than--average jet powers, accretion luminosities and black hole masses. Because of their extremely hard X--ray continua, these objects are best studied in the X-ray domain. Here, we report on the discovery by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope and subsequent follow-up observations with $NuSTAR$, $Swift$ and GROND of a new member of the MeV blazar family: PMN J0641$-$0320. Our optical spectroscopy provides confirmation that this is a flat--spectrum radio quasar located at a redshift of $z=1.196$. Its very hard $NuSTAR$ spe…
Monitoring of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 335 (Mrk 335) with the Swift satellite discovered an X-ray flare beginning 2014 August 29. At the peak, the 0.5-5keV count rate had increased from that in the low flux state by a factor of 10. A target of opportunity observation was triggered with NuSTAR, catching the decline of the flare on 2014 September 20. We present a joint analysis of Swift and NuSTAR observations to understand the cause of this flare. The X-ray spectrum shows an increase in directly observed continuum flux and the softening of the continuum spectrum to a photon in…
The HAWC gamma ray observatory is located at the Sierra Negra Volcano in Puebla, Mexico, at an altitude of 4,100 meters. HAWC is a wide field of view array of 300 water Cherenkov detectors that are continuously surveying ~ 2sr of the sky, operating since March 2015. The large collected data sample allows HAWC to perform an unbiased monitoring of the BL Lac Mrk 421. This is the closest and brightest known extragalactic high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac in the gamma-ray/X- ray bands and is extensively monitored by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite, and the BAT and XRT inst…
In this paper we present the results obtained with a monitoring programme (23 days long) performed with Swift-XRT on the local Seyfert galaxy Mrk 915. The light-curve analysis shows a significant count rate variation (about a factor of 2-3) on a time-scale of a few days, while the X-ray colours show a change in the spectral curvature below 2 keV and the presence of two main spectral states. From the spectral analysis we find that the observed variations can be explained by the change of the intrinsic nuclear power (about a factor of 1.5) coupled with a change of the properties of an ionized ab…
We present the results of a deep spectral analysis of all Swift observations of Mrk 421 between April 2006 and July 2006, when it reached its highest X-ray flux recorded until the end of 2006. We completed this data set with other historical X-ray observations. We used the full data set to investigate the correlation between the spectral parameters. We found a signature of stochastic acceleration in the anticorrelation between the peak energy (Ep) of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and the spectral curvature parameter (b). We found signature of energetic budget of the jet in the correla…
We present the results of X-ray spectral analysis of the Seyfert type 2 galaxy Mrk 417 observed by the NuSTAR (3-60 keV) and the Swift/BAT (14-150) observatories. The NuSTAR data shows a good fit with a baseline model which composed of an absorbed cutoff power-law component and reflected emission from the cold neutral medium. We found that the spectrum is steep $Γ= 1.63_{-0.11}^{+0.10}$ and obscured by hydrogen column density of $N_{H} = 3.22_{-0.39}^{+0.41} \cdot 10^{23} cm^{-2}$, narrow $FeK_α$ emission line has an equivalent width of $EW = 115_{-1}^{+2}$ eV that suggests this feature is ori…
We investigate the peculiar properties of a large TeV gamma-ray flare from Mrk~501 detected during the 2009 multiwavelength campaign. We identify the counterpart of the flare in the Fermi/LAT telescope data and study its spectral and timing characteristics. A strong order-of-magnitude increase of the very-high-energy gamma-ray flux during the flare was not accompanied by an increase in the X-ray flux, so that the flare was one of the "orphan"-type TeV flares observed in BL Lacs. The flare lasted about 1 month at energies above 10 GeV. The flaring source spectrum in the 10-200 GeV range was ver…
The radiation mechanism of very high energy $γ$-ray emission from blazars and crucial parameters like magnetic field, and size of the emitting region are not well understood yet. To understand the above mentioned properties of blazars, we observed five nearby TeV $γ$-ray emitting blazars (Mrk421, Mrk501, 1ES2344+514, 1ES1218+304 and 3C454.3) and one radio galaxy (M87) using the High Altitude GAmma Ray (HAGAR) telescope. HAGAR is an array of seven telescopes located at Hanle, India to detect Cherenkov light caused by extensive air showers initiated by $γ$-rays. Mrk421 was observed to undergo on…
Context: The nearby (z=0.031) TeV blazar Mrk421 was reported to be in a high state of flux activity since November, 2009. Aims: To investigate possible changes in the physical parameters of Mrk421 during its high state of activity using multiwavelength data. Methods: We have observed this source in bright state using High Altitude GAmma Ray (HAGAR) telescope array at energies above 250 GeV during February 13 - 19, 2010. Optical, X-ray and gamma-ray archival data are also used to obtain the SEDs and light curves. Results: Mrk421 was found to undergo one of its brightest flaring episodes on Febr…
Starting in 2006, Swift has been targeting a region of ~21'X21' around Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) with the onboard X-ray telescope. The short, quasi-daily observations offer an unique view of the long-term X-ray behavior of the supermassive black hole. We report on the data obtained between 2006 February and 2011 October, which encompasses 715 observations with a total accumulated exposure time of ~0.8 Ms. A total of six X-ray flares were detected with Swift, which all had an average 2-10 keV luminosity of Lx (1-4)E35 erg/s (assuming a distance of 8 kpc). This more than doubles the number of such…
The radiative counterpart of the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Centre, Sagittarius A*, displays flaring emission in the X-ray band atop a steady, quiescent level. Flares are also observed in the near-infrared band. The physical process producing the flares is not fully understood and it is unclear if the flaring rate varies, although some recent works suggest it has reached unprecedented variability in recent years. Using over a decade of regular X-ray monitoring of Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, we studied the variations in count rate of Sgr A* on time scales of years. We decompose…
Since its launch in 2008 June, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has opened a new era in high-energy astrophysics. The unprecedented sensitivity, angular resolution and effective area of the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi, together with the nearly continuous observation of the entire gamma-ray sky assures a formidable opportunity to study in detail gamma-ray emitting AGN of various types. In this context the Swift satellite, thanks to its broad band coverage and scheduling flexibility, creates a perfect synergy with Fermi. Swift and Fermi coordinated monitoring campaigns of radio-loud A…
We present the analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift optical-UV and X-ray observations of the Seyfert-1/QSO Mrk 509, part of an unprecedented multi-wavelength campaign, investigating the nuclear environment of this AGN. The XMM-Newton data are from a series of 10 observations of about 60 ks each, spaced from each other by about 4 days, taken in Oct-Nov 2009. During our campaign, Mrk 509 was also observed with Swift for a period of about 100 days, monitoring the behaviour of the source before and after the XMM-Newton observations. With these data we have established the continuum spectrum in the opt…
In 2008, the blazar Mrk421 entered in a very active phase and was one of the brightest sources in the sky at TeV energies, showing strong and frequent flaring. We searched for gamma-ray emission at energies E > 0.8 TeV during the whole 2008 with the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage air shower detector located at Yangbajing (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China). The observed signal is not constant and in correlation with X-ray measurements. The average emission, during the active period of the source, was about twice the Crab Nebula level, with an integral flux of (4.9$\pm 2.0$)x 10$^{-11}$ ph…
As one of the most active blazars, Mrk421 is an excellent candidate for the study of the physical processes within the jets of AGN. Here we report on the extensive multi-wavelength observations of Mrk 421 over 4.5 years, from 2008 August to 2013 February. This source was simultaneously monitored by several experiments at different wavelengths: ARGO-YBJ in TeV $γ$-rays, $Fermi$-LAT in GeV $γ$-rays, $Swift$-BAT in hard X-rays, $RXTE$-ASM, $MAXI$ and $Swift$-XRT in soft X-rays, $Swift$-UVOT in ultraviolet, and OVRO in radio frequencies. In particular, thanks to the ARGO-YBJ and $Fermi$ data, the …
We present the results from the timing and spectral study of Mrk\,421 based mainly on the \emph{Swift} data in the X-ray energy range obtained during the time interval 2015\,December--2018\,April. The most extreme X-ray flaring activity on the long-term, daily and intraday timescales was observed during the 2-month period which started in 2017\,December when the 0.3--10\,keV flux exceeded a level of 5$\times$10$^{-9}$erg\,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, recorded only twice previously. While the TeV-band and X-ray variabilities mostly were correlated, the source often varied in a complex manner in the MeV--…
Because of the short duty-cycles and observation-time constraints, studies of bright TeV (E>100 GeV) blazars are mostly restricted to flaring episodes or rather short (days to few weeks) multiwavelength campaigns. At the same time, long-term studies of these objects are essential to gain a more complete understanding of the blazar phenomenon and to constrain theoretical models concerning jet physics. Only unbiased long-term studies are adequate for the determination of flaring state probabilities and for estimating the statistical significance of possible correlations between TeV flaring state…
We study the variation of the broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of the BL Lac object Mrk 501 as a function of source activity, from quiescent to flaring. Through chi-square-minimization we model eight simultaneous SED datasets with a one-zone Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) model, and examine how model parameters vary with source activity. The emerging variability pattern of Mrk 501 is complex, with the Compton component arising from gamma-electron scatterings that sometimes are (mostly) Thomson and sometimes (mostly) extreme Klein-Nishina. This can be seen from the variation of the…
Since August 2009, MAXI experiment on the ISS has been performing all-sky X-ray monitoring. With MAXI, we detected flaring activities of some blazers, including Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 3C 273. Recently, new X-ray flaring activities were detected from two blazers, MAXI J1930+093 = 2FGL J1931.1+0938 (Atel#5943) and 2MAXI J0243-582 = BZB J0244-5819 (Atel#6012). The MAXI monitoring also covers black hole binaries, including Cyg X-1 and Cyg X-3 which emit GeV gamma-rays. Their gamma-ray emission was found to coincide with their X-ray state transitions. We present light curves and outstanding events o…
The TeV blazar Markarian 421 underwent multi-TeV flaring during April 2004 and simultaneously observed in x-ray and TeV energies. It was observed that the TeV outbursts had no counterparts in the lower energies, which implies that this might be an orphan flare. In the context of hadronic model, we have shown that this multi-TeV flaring can be produced due to the interaction of Fermi-accelerated protons of energy $\lesssim 168$ TeV with the background photons in the low energy tail of the synchrotron self-Compton spectrum of the blazar jet. We fit very well the flaring spectrum with this model.…
During a period of strong $γ$-ray flaring activity from BL Lacertae, we organized Swift, Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) follow-up observations. The source has been monitored by Swift-XRT (X-ray Telescope) between 2020 August 11 and October 16, showing a variability amplitude of 65, with a flux varying between 1.0 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ and 65.3 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. On 2020 October 6, Swift-XRT has observed the source during its historical maximum X-ray flux. A softer-when-brighter behaviour has been obs…
TeV flaring activity with time scales as short as tens of minutes and an orphan TeV flare have been observed from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). The TeV emission from Mrk 421 is believed to be produced by leptonic synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission. In this scenario, correlations between the X-ray and the TeV fluxes are expected, TeV orphan flares are hardly explained and the activity (measured as duty cycle) of the source at TeV energies is expected to be equal or less than that observed in X-rays if only SSC is considered. To estimate the TeV duty cycle of Mrk 421 and to establish …
In this work, we report on the detection of enhanced TeV gamma- ray emission from the high synchrotron-peaked blazar Mrk 421 with the TACTIC telescope on the night of December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019). We use data from the TACTIC observations of Mrk 421 for one week during December 25-31, 2014 (MJD 57016-57022) in this study. The TACTIC observation on December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019) alone results in the detection of 86+-17 gamma- ray like events from Mrk 421 with a statistical significance of 5.17sigma in a livetime of ~ 2.2 hours above an energy threshold of 0.85 TeV. The high statistics (higher th…
We present the first intensive continuum reverberation mapping study of the high accretion rate Seyfert galaxy Mrk 110. The source was monitored almost daily for more than 200 days with the Swift X-ray and UV/optical telescopes, supported by ground-based observations from Las Cumbres Observatory, the Liverpool Telescope, and the Zowada Observatory, thus extending the wavelength coverage to 9100 Å. Mrk 110 was found to be significantly variable at all wavebands. Analysis of the intraband lags reveals two different behaviours, depending on the timescale. On timescales shorter than 10 days the la…
We present the discovery of an optical accretion disk wind in the X-ray transient Swift J1858.6-0814. Our 90-spectrum data set, taken with the 10.4m GTC telescope over 8 different epochs and across five months, reveals the presence of conspicuous P-Cyg profiles in He I at 5876 Angs and Halpha. These features are detected throughout the entire campaign, albeit their intensity and main observational properties are observed to vary on time-scales as short as five minutes. In particular, we observe significant variations in the wind velocity, between a few hundreds and ~ 2400 km/s. In agreement wi…
The well studied blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421, $z$=0.031) was the subject of an intensive multi-wavelength campaign when it flared in 2013 April. The recorded X-ray and very high energy (VHE, E$>$100 GeV) $γ$-ray fluxes are the highest ever measured from this object. At the peak of the activity, it was monitored by the hard X-ray focusing telescope {\it Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array} ({\it NuSTAR}) and {\it Swift} X-Ray Telescope (XRT). In this work, we present a detailed variability analysis of {\it NuSTAR} and {\it Swift}-XRT observations of Mrk 421 during this flaring episode. We o…
Mrk 421 is a high-synchrotron-peaked blazar featuring bright and persistent GeV and TeV emission. We use multi-wavelength light curves of Mrk 421 spanning 5.5 years with FACT (TeV) and Fermi LAT (GeV) in the gamma rays, Swift BAT, Swift XRT and MAXI in the X-rays, together with optical and radio data and investigate the physical processes driving the emission and variability. Observations by FACT are continuous and not triggered, so the source was found in a wide range of flux states and more than 30 flares were identified from X-rays to TeV. The light curves in TeV and X-rays feature very sim…
We present long-term observations of several VHE (E > 100 GeV) blazars with VERITAS, together with contemporaneous Swift and RXTE X-ray data. The observed targets include Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 2344+514. Strong flux and spectral variability is seen in Mrk 421 on nightly time-scales between January and June 2008, revealing a highly correlated X-ray to GeV/TeV connection. Modest X-ray variability is evident in Mrk 501. Observations of 1ES 2344+514 in December 2007 show VHE gamma-ray and X-ray flux doubling on nightly time-scales.
We report on long-term multi-wavelength monitoring of blazar Mrk 421 by the GASP-WEBT collaboration and Steward Observatory, and by the Swift and Fermi satellites. We study the source behaviour in the period 2007-2015, characterized by several extreme flares. The ratio between the optical, X-ray, and γ-ray fluxes is very variable. The γ-ray flux variations show fair correlation with the optical ones starting from 2012. We analyse spectropolarimetric data and find wavelength-dependence of the polarisation degree (P), which is compatible with the presence of the host galaxy, and no wavelength-de…
Blazars are the most extreme subclass of active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets emerging from a super-massive black hole and forming a small angle with respect to our line of sight. Blazars are also known to be related to flaring activity as they exhibit large flux variations over a wide range of frequency and on multiple timescales, ranging from a few minutes to several months. The detection of a high-energy neutrino from the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056 and the subsequent discovery of a neutrino excess from the same direction have naturally strengthened the hypothesis that blazars are …
The supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is located at the dynamical center of the Milky Way. In a recent study of the X-ray flaring activity from Sgr A* using Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift data from 1999 to 2015, it has been argued that the bright flaring rate has increased from 2014 Aug. 31 while the faint flaring rate decreased from around 2013 Aug. We tested the persistence of these changes in the flaring rates with new X-ray data of Sgr A* obtained in 2016-2018 (total exposure of 1.4Ms). We detected 9 flares in the Chandra data and 5 flares in the Swift data that we added to th…
We investigate the electron energy distributions (EEDs) and the acceleration processes in the jet of Mrk 421 through fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in different active states in the frame of a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. After assuming two possible EEDs formed in different acceleration models: the shock accelerated power-law with exponential cut-off (PLC) EED and the stochastic turbulence accelerated log-parabolic (LP) EED, we fit the observed SEDs of Mrk 421 in both low and giant flare states by using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method which constr…
We present a preliminary analysis of new high resolution radio observations of the nearby TeV blazar Markarian 421 (z=0.031). This study is part of an ambitious multifrequency campaign, with observations in sub-mm (SMA), optical/IR (GASP), UV/X-ray (Swift, RXTE, MAXI), and gamma rays (Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS). In this manuscript we consider only data obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at seven epochs (one observation per month from January to July 2011) at 15 and 23.8 GHz. We investigate the inner jet structure on parsec scales through the study of model-fit components for eac…
Strong X-ray and $γ$--ray flares have been detected in February 2010 from the high synchrotron peaked blazar Mrk 421 (z=0.031). With the motivation of understanding the physics involved in this flaring activity, we study the variability of the source in X-ray and $γ$--ray energy bands during the period February 10-23, 2010 (MJD 55237-55250). We use near simultaneous X-ray data collected by \emph{MAXI}, \emph{Swift}-XRT and $γ$--ray data collected by \emph{Fermi}-LAT and \emph{TACTIC} along with the optical V-band observations by \emph{SPOL} at Steward Observatory. We observe that the variation…
Accretion disks and coronae around massive black holes have been studied extensively, and they are known to be coupled. Over a period of 30 years, however, the X-ray (coronal) flux of Mrk 817 increased by a factor of 40 while its UV (disk) flux remained relatively steady. Recent high-cadence monitoring finds that the X-ray and UV continua in Mrk 817 are also decoupled on time scales of weeks and months. These findings could require mechanical beaming of the innermost accretion flow, and/or an absorber that shields the disk and/or broad line region (BLR) from the X-ray corona. Herein, we report…
Blazars are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have a relativistic jet with a small viewing angle towards the observer. Recent results based on hadronic scenarios have motivated an ongoing discussion of how a blazar can produce high energy neutrinos during a flaring state and which scenario can successfully describe the observed gamma-ray behaviour. Markarian 421 is one of the closest and brightest objects in the extragalactic gamma-ray sky and showed flaring activity over a 14-day period in March 2010. In this work, we describe the performed analysis of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data fr…
Using a time-dependent one-zone leptonic model that incorporates both shock acceleration and stochastic acceleration processes, we investigate the formation of the narrow spectral feature at $\sim3$ TeV of Mrk 501 which was observed during the X-ray and TeV flaring activity in July 2014. It is found that the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) can be well interpreted as the synchrotron and synchrotron-self-Compton emission from the electron energy distribution (EED) that is composed by a power-law (PL) branch and a pileup branch. The PL branch produces synchrotron photons which are sc…
A major flaring state of the BL Lac object Mrk 501 was observed by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in June, 2014. Flux levels higher than one Crab unit were recorded and rapid variability at very high energies ($\sim$2-20 TeV) was revealed. The high statistics afforded by the flares allowed us to probe the presence of minutes timescale variability and study its statistical characteristics exclusively at TeV energies owing to the high energy threshold of approximately 2 TeV. Doubling times of a few minutes are estimated for fluxes greater than 2 TeV. Statistical tests on the ligh…
We present torus modelling for the X-ray spectra of a nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1239 ($z=0.0199$), based on archival Suzaku, NuSTAR and Swift observations. Our model suggests very soft intrinsic power-law continuum emission of $Γ\approx2.57$ in 2019 and $Γ\approx2.98$ in 2007. By applying a correction factor to the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity, we find that Mrk 1239 is accreting near or around the Eddington limit. Our best-fit spectral model also suggests a torus with a column density of $\log(N_{\rm H, ave}/$cm$^{-2})=25.0\pm0.2$ and a high covering factor of $0.90$ in Mrk 1239, …
