Since the detection of very high energy (VHE) $γ$-rays from Mrk 501, its broad band emission of radiation was mostly and quite effectively modeled using one zone emission scenario. However, broadband spectral and flux variability studies enabled by the multiwavelength campaigns carried out during the recent years have revealed rather complex behavior of Mrk 501. The observed emission from Mrk 501 could be due to a complex superposition of multiple emission zones. Moreover new evidences of detection of very hard intrinsic $γ$-ray spectra obtained from {\it Fermi}--LAT observations have challenged the theories about origin of VHE $γ$-rays. Our studies based on {\it Fermi}--LAT data indicate the existence of two separate components in the spectrum, one for low energy $γ$-rays and the other for high energy $γ$-rays. Using multiwaveband data from several ground and space based instruments, in addition to HAGAR data, the spectral energy distribution of Mrk~501 is obtained for various flux states observed during 2011. In the present work, this observed broadband spectral energy distribution is reproduced with a leptonic, multi-zone Synchrotron Self-Compton model.
Multi-epoch X-ray spectroscopy (0.3-25 keV) of the Seyfert 1.2 galaxy Mrk 79 (UGC 3973) spanning nearly eight years and a factor of three in broadband flux are analysed. The data are obtained at seven epochs with either XMM-Newton or Suzaku. Comparison with contemporaneous RXTE monitoring indicate that all flux states of Mrk 79 are represented by the data. The spectra are fitted in a self-consistent manner adopting a power law and ionised reflection to describe the broadband continuum. Modification of the spectra by a distant photoionised medium, seen predominantly in emission, are also includ…
The X-ray spectra of some active galactic nuclei (AGN) show a soft X-ray excess, emission in excess to the extrapolated primary X-ray continuum below 2 keV. Recent studies have shown that this soft excess can be described well as originating from either a relativistic ionized reflection, the extreme blurring of the reprocessed emission from the innermost region of the accretion disk, or Comptonization from an optically thick and warm region called the 'warm corona', in which electron scattering is the dominant source of opacity. To constrain the origin of the soft excess in the Seyfert 1 galax…
Active galactic nuclei host an accretion disc with an X-ray producing corona around a supermassive black hole. In bright sources, such as the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335, reflection of the coronal emission off the accretion disc has been observed. Reflection produces spectral features such as an iron emission line, which allow for properties of the inner accretion disc and the corona to be constrained. We perform a multi-epoch spectral analysis of all XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and NuSTAR observations of Mrk 335, and we optimize our fitting procedure to unveil correlations between the Eddington ratio an…
A multi-epoch X-ray spectral and variability analysis is conducted for the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) active galactic nucleus (AGN) Mrk 478. All available X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Suzaku satellites, spanning from 2001 to 2017, are modelled with a variety of physical models including partial covering, soft-Comptonisation, and blurred reflection, to explain the observed spectral shape and variability over the 16 years. All models are a similar statistical fit to the data sets, though the analysis of the variability between data sets favours the blurred reflection model. In particular, th…
We present Fermi-LAT and multi-frequency, multi-epoch VLBA data for the TeV blazar Mrk421. We collected the data during a long and intensive multi-frequency campaign in 2011. We study the gamma-ray light curve, the photon index evolution and their connection to the radio data on sub-parsec scales, including total intensity, polarized flux density, polarization angle, spectral index, and rotation measure both in the core and the jet region. The VLBA data were obtained at 15 and 24 GHz for 12 epochs and at 43 GHz for 23 epochs, thus providing the best temporal and spatial coverage in the radio b…
The X-ray emission in BL Lac objects is believed to be dominated by synchrotron emission from their relativistic jets. However, when the jet emission is not strong, one could expect signatures of X-ray emission from inverse Compton scattering of accretion disc photons by the corona. Moreover, the observed X-ray variability can also originate in the disc, and gets propagated and amplified by the jet. Here, we present results on the BL Lac object Mrk 421 using the NuSTAR data acquired during 2017 when the source was in a moderate X-ray brightness state. For comparison with high jet activity, we …

We reviewed X-ray flux and spectral variability properties studied to date by various X-ray satellites for Mrk 421 and PKS 2155-304, which are TeV emitting blazars. Mrk 421 and PKS 2155-304 are the most X-ray luminous blazars in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively. Blazars show flux and spectral variabilities in the complete electromagnetic spectrum on diverse timescales ranging from a few minutes to hours, days, weeks, months and even several years. The flux and spectral variability on different timescales can be used to constrain the size of the emitting region, estimate the …
We present the results from the multi-wavelength monitoring observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 with AstroSat. We analysed both the X-ray (SXT & LAXPC) and UV (UVIT) data of the source at two epochs, separated by ~18 days. The source was in a low flux state during the observations, and the X-ray spectra were found to be harder than usual. The presence of soft X-ray excess was identified in the observations, and the broadband X-ray continuum was modelled with power-law and blackbody (modified by intrinsic absorption) and a distant neutral reflection component. We did not fi…
X-ray observations of the unique NLS1 galaxy Mrk 1239 spanning 18-years are presented. Data from XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift and NuSTAR are combined to obtain a broad-band, multi-epoch view of the source. There is spectral variability in the 3-10 keV band over the 18-years. An analysis of the NuSTAR and Suzaku light curves also suggests rapid variability in the 3-10 keV band, which is consistent with the NLS1 definition of the source. However, no variability is seen below 3 keV on any timescale. Two distinct physical models are adopted to describe the data above and below ~3 keV. The low energie…
We present the results from the timing and spectral study of Mrk\,421 based mainly on the \emph{Swift} data in the X-ray energy range obtained during the time interval 2015\,December--2018\,April. The most extreme X-ray flaring activity on the long-term, daily and intraday timescales was observed during the 2-month period which started in 2017\,December when the 0.3--10\,keV flux exceeded a level of 5$\times$10$^{-9}$erg\,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, recorded only twice previously. While the TeV-band and X-ray variabilities mostly were correlated, the source often varied in a complex manner in the MeV--…

By fitting high-quality and simultaneous multi-wavelength (MWL) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at multiple epochs with a one-zone leptonic jet model, we study jet properties of the three famous blazars Mrk 421, 3C 454.3 and 3C 279. In the jet model, the emitting electron energy distributions (EEDs) are calculated by solving the kinetic equation of electron injection, escape, adiabatic and radiative energy losses. To explore multi-dimensional parameter space systematically, we employ a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) fitting technique. The properties of emission regions we derived here ar…
We present a detailed spectral study of the narrow-line Seyfert~1 galaxy, Markarian~335, using eight epoch observations made between 2013 and 2020 with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array. The source was variable during this period both in spectral flux and flow geometry. We estimated the height of the Compton cloud from the model fitted parameters for the whole observation period. This allowed us to investigate the underlying physical processes that drive the variability in X-rays. Our model fitted mass varies in a narrow range, between $(2.44\pm0.45-3.04\pm0.56)\times10^{7}M_\odot$, ho…
We present results from 43 GHz (VLBA, six epochs from 2012.2 to 2013.2) and 86 GHz (GMVA, one epoch in 2012.4) observations toward the basis of the jet in the TeV Blazar Mrk 501. The 43-GHz data analysis reveals a new feature located northeast of the radio core, with a flux density of several tens of mJy, perpendicularly to the jet axis. The 86-GHz image shows the jet feature located 0.75 mas southeast of the radio core, which is consistent with the previous result. The location of Gaussian model for 0.75 mas feature does not coincide with those for the jets in the 43-GHz image, however, a dis…
It is surprising to find a fact for migration in the peak positions of synchrotron spectra energy distribution component during in the activity epochs of Mrk 421, accompanying with an orphan flaring at the X-ray and GeV-TeV $γ$-ray bands. A geometric interpretation and standard shock or stochastic acceleration models of blazar emission have difficulty reproducing these observed behaviours. The present paper introduces a linear acceleration by integrating the reconnection electric field into the particle transport model for the observed behaviours of Mrk 421. We note that the strong evidence fo…
We present a preliminary analysis of new high resolution radio observations of the nearby TeV blazar Markarian 421 (z=0.031). This study is part of an ambitious multifrequency campaign, with observations in sub-mm (SMA), optical/IR (GASP), UV/X-ray (Swift, RXTE, MAXI), and gamma rays (Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS). In this manuscript we consider only data obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at seven epochs (one observation per month from January to July 2011) at 15 and 23.8 GHz. We investigate the inner jet structure on parsec scales through the study of model-fit components for eac…
High-resolution radio observations are ideal for constraining the value of physical parameters in the inner regions of active-galactic-nucleus jets and complement results on multiwavelength (MWL) observations. This study is part of a wider multifrequency campaign targeting the nearby TeV blazar Markarian 421 (z=0.031), with observations in the sub-mm (SMA), optical/IR (GASP), UV/X-ray (Swift, RXTE, MAXI), and gamma rays (Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS). We investigate the jet's morphology and any proper motions, and the time evolution of physical parameters such as flux densities and spectral index…
In the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 766, a Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) signal with a period of $\sim6450$ s is detected in the \emph{XMM-Newton} data collected on 2005 May 31. This QPO signal is highly statistical significant at the confidence level at $\sim5σ$ with the quality factor of $Q=f/Δf>13.6$. The X-ray intensity changed by a factor of 3 with root mean square fractional variability of $14.3\%$. Furthermore, this QPO signal presents in the data of all three EPIC detectors and two RGS cameras and its frequency follows the $f_{\rm QPO}$-$M_{\rm BH}$ relation spanning from stella…
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) originating from innermost regions of blazars can provide unique perspective of some of the burning issues in blazar studies including disk-jet connection, launch of relativistic jets from the central engine, and other extreme conditions near the fast rotating supermassive black holes. However, a number of hurdles associated with searching QPOs in blazars e.g., red-noise dominance, modest significance of the detection and periodic modulation lasting for only a couple of cycles, make it difficult to estimate the true significance of the detection. In this work,…
We report on the findings of a 364 ksec observation of the BL LAC object Mrk 421 with the X-ray observatory Suzaku. The analysis in this paper uses fluxes and hardness ratios in the broad energy range from 0.5 keV to 30 keV. During the course of the observation, the 0.5 keV - 30 keV flux decreased by a factor of $\sim$2 and was accompanied by several large flares occurring on timescales of a few hours. We find that fitting a broken power model to spectra from isolated epochs during the observation describes the data well. Different flares exhibit different spectral and hardness ratio evolution…
In this work we interpret and discuss the time variable rotation measure (RM) found, for the first time over a 1-yr period, in the core region of a blazar. These results are based on a one-year, multi-frequency (15, 24, and 43 GHz) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). We investigate the Faraday screen properties and its location with respect to the jet emitting region. Given that the 43 GHz radio core flux density and the RM time evolution suggest a similar trend, we explore the possible connection between the RM and the accretion rate. Among th…
We present results from a deep spectral analysis of all the Swift observations of Mrk 421 from April 2006 to July 2006, when it reached its largest X-ray flux recorded until 2006. The peak flux was about 85 milli-Crab in the 2.0-10.0 keV band, with the peak energy (Ep) of the spectral energy distribution (SED) laying often at energies larger than 10 keV. We performed spectral analysis of the Swift observations investigating the trends of the spectral parameters in terms of acceleration and energetic features phenomenologically linked to the SSC model parameters, predicting their effects in the…
The ULIRG Mrk 273 contains two infrared nuclei, N and SW, separated by 1 arcsec. A Chandra observation has identified the SW nucleus as an absorbed X-ray source with nH ~4e23 cm-2 but also hinted at the possible presence of a Compton thick AGN in the N nucleus, where a black hole of 10^9 Msun is inferred from the ionized gas kinematics. The intrinsic X-ray spectral slope recently measured by NuSTAR is unusually hard (photon index of ~1.3) for a Seyfert nucleus, for which we seek an alternative explanation. We hypothesise a strongly absorbed X-ray source in N, of which X-ray emission rises stee…

High-resolution millimeter wave very-long-baseline interferometry (mm-VLBI) is an ideal tool for probing the structure at the base of extragalactic jets in detail. The TeV blazar Mrk 501 is one of the best targets among BL Lac objects for studying the nature of off-axis jet structures because it shows different jet position angles at different scales. The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of the off-axis jet structure through high-resolution mm-VLBI images at the jet base and physical parameters such as kinematics, flux densities, and spectral indices. We performed Very Long B…
We make use of VLBI observations of the radio jet in the quasar S5 0836+710 at different frequencies and epochs to study its properties. The jet shows helical structure at all frequencies. The ridge-line of the emission in the jet coincides at all frequencies and epochs, within the errors. We conclude that the helicity is a real, physical structure. Small differences between epochs reveal wave-like motion of the ridge-line transversal to the jet propagation axis. These transversal motions are measured to be superluminal. This unphysical result could correspond to a possible small amplitude osc…
We present the discovery of an outflowing ionized wind in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk 335. Despite having been extensively observed by most of the largest X-ray observatories in the last decade, this bright source was not known to host warm absorber gas until recent XMM-Newton observations in combination with a long-term Swift monitoring program have shown extreme flux and spectral variability. High resolution spectra obtained by the XMM-Newton RGS detector reveal that the wind consists of three distinct ionization components, all outflowing at a velocity of 5000 km/s. This wind is clearly reveal…
Several tens of massive binary systems display indirect, or even strong evidence for non-thermal radio emission, hence their particle accelerator status. These objects are referred to as particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries (PACWBs). WR 133 is one of the shortest period Wolf-Rayet + O systems in this category, and is therefore critical to characterize the boundaries of the parameter space adequate for particle acceleration in massive binaries. Our methodology consists in analyzing JVLA observations of WR 133 at different epochs to search for compelling evidence for a phase-locked vari…
One of the open questions in extragalactic jet Astrophysics is related to the nature of the observed radio jet, namely whether it traces a pattern or the flow structure itself. In this paper I summarize the evidence collected for the presence of waves in extragalactic jets. The evidence points towards the peak of emission in helical jets corresponding to pressure-maxima of a wave that is generated within the core region and propagates downstream. Making use of a number of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the radio jet in the quasar S5~0836+710 at different frequencies a…
GRB 130925A is a peculiar event characterized by an extremely long gamma-ray duration ($\approx$7 ks), as well as dramatic flaring in the X-rays for $\approx$20 ks. After this period, its X-ray afterglow shows an atypical soft spectrum with photon index $Γ$$\sim$4, as observed by Swift and Chandra, until $\approx 10^7$ s, when XMM-Newton observations uncover a harder spectral shape with $Γ$$\sim$2.5, commonly observed in GRB afterglows. We find that two distinct emission components are needed to explain the X-ray observations: a thermal component, which dominates the X-ray emission for several…
Since the day of its explosion, supernova (SN) 1987A has been closely monitored to study its evolution and to detect its central compact relic. In fact, the formation of a neutron star is strongly supported by the detection of neutrinos from the SN. However, besides the detection in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data of a feature that is compatible with the emission arising from a proto-pulsar wind nebula (PWN), the only hint for the existence of such elusive compact object is provided by the detection of hard emission in NuSTAR data up to ~ 20 keV. We report on the s…
We present optical to very-high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of Mrk 421 between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high-energy (HE) gamma-ray signal was detected by AGILE-GRID during June 9-15, brighter than the average flux observed by EGRET in Mrk 421 by a factor of approx. 1.5. In 20-60 keV X-rays, a large-amplitude 5-day flare (June 9-15) was resolved with a maximum flux of approx. 55 mCrab. SuperAGILE, RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT data show a clearly correlated flaring structure between soft and hard X-rays, with a high flux/amplitude variability in hard X-rays. Hints of the same flaring behavio…
GRB 201015A is a long-duration Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) which was detected at very high energies (> 100 GeV) using the MAGIC telescopes. If confirmed, this would be the fifth and least luminous GRB ever detected at this energies. We performed a radio follow-up of GRB 201015A over twelve different epochs, from 1.4 to 117 days post-burst, with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, e-MERLIN and the European VLBI Network. We included optical and X-rays observations, performed with the Multiple Mirror Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory respectively, together with publicly available data. We de…
We present a study of 9242 spectroscopically-confirmed quasars with multi-epoch ugriz photometry from the SDSS Southern Survey. By fitting a separable linear model to each quasar's spectral variations, we decompose their five-band spectral energy distributions into variable (disc) and non-variable (host galaxy) components. In modelling the disc spectra, we include attenuation by dust on the line of sight through the host galaxy to its nucleus. We consider five commonly used attenuation laws, and find that the best description is by dust similar to that of the Small Magellanic Cloud, inferring …
The X-ray, Ultraviolet, Optical emission from radio-quiet AGNs, black hole binaries, and other compact sources, in general, follow a lognormal flux distribution, a linear rms-flux relation, and a (broken) power-law power spectral densities (PSDs). These characteristics are normally attributed to the multiplicative combination of fluctuations in the accretion disk. Similar features have been inferred for some well-observed blazars in different energy bands, but a systematic study over a long duration is still missing. Using a continuous gamma-ray light curves over 3-days cadence from August 200…
For a new sample of 8 weak-line-quasars (WLQs) we report a sensitive search in 20 intranight monitoring sessions, for blazar-like optical flux variations on hour-like and longer time scale (day/month/year$-$like). The sample consists exclusively of the WLQs that are not radio$-$loud and have either been classified as `radio-weak probable BL Lac candidates' and/or are known to have exhibited at least one episode of large, blazar$-$like optical variability. Whereas only a hint of intra$-$night variability is seen for two of these WLQs, J104833.5$+$620305.0(z = 0.219) and J133219.6$+$622715.9 (z …
We report on the VLBI follow-up observations using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) array at 22 GHz for the largest X-ray flare of TeV blazar Mrk 421 that occurred in mid-February, 2010. The total of five epochs of observations were performed at intervals of about 20 days between March 7 and May 31, 2010. No new-born component associated with the flare was seen directly in the total intensity images obtained by our multi-epoch VLBI observations. However, one jet component located at ~1 mas north-west from the core was able to be identified, and its proper motion can be measured as -1.66+/-0.46 …
We analyze seven NICER and NuSTAR epochs of the black hole X-ray binary GX 339-4 in the hard state during its two most recent hard-only outbursts in 2017 and 2019. These observations cover the 1-100 keV unabsorbed luminosities between 0.3% and 2.1% of the Eddington limit. With NICER's negligible pile-up, high count rate and unprecedented time resolution, we perform a spectral-timing analysis and spectral modeling using relativistic and distant reflection models. Our spectral fitting shows that as the inner disk radius moves inwards, the thermal disk emission increases in flux and temperature, …
We have carried out a systematic analysis of the nearby (z=0.0279) active galaxy Zw 229.015 using multi-epoch, multi-instrument and deep pointed observations with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift and NuSTAR. Spectral and temporal variability are examined in detail on both the long (weeks-to-years) and short (hours) timescales. A deep Suzaku observation of the source shows two distinct spectral states; a bright-soft state and a dim-hard state in which changes in the power law component account for the differences. Partial covering, blurred reflection and soft Comptonisation models describe the X-ray s…
We present a detailed characterisation and theoretical interpretation of the broadband emission of the paradigmatic TeV blazar Mrk 421, with special focus on the multi-band flux correlations. The dataset has been collected through an extensive multiwavelength campaign organised between 2016 December and 2017 June. The instruments involved are MAGIC, FACT, Fermi-LAT, Swift, GASP-WEBT, OVRO, Medicina and Metsähovi. Additionally, four deep exposures (several hours long) with simultaneous MAGIC and NuSTAR observations allowed a precise measurement of the falling segments of the two spectral compon…
A modeling strategy that is adapted to the study of synchrotron-self absorbed plasmoids that was developed for the quasar, Mrk 231, in Reynolds et al (2009) is applied to the microquasar GRS 1915+105. The major flare from December 1993 shows spectral evidence of three such self-absorbed components. The analysis yields an estimate of the power that is required to eject the plasmoids from the central engine that is independent of other estimates that exist in the literature for different flares. The technique has an advantage since the absorbed spectrum contains an independent constraint provide…
Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), if exist in nature, are expected to mix with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field. The energy range of photons which undergo strong mixing with ALPs depends on the ALP mass, on its coupling with photons as well as on the external magnetic field and particle density configurations. Recent observations of blazars by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope in the 0.1-300 GeV energy range show a break in their spectra in the 1-10 GeV range. We have modeled this spectral feature for the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C454.3 during its November 2010 outburst, a…
We report on variability and correlation studies using multiwavelength observations of the blazar Mrk 421 during the month of February, 2010 when an extraordinary flare reaching a level of $\sim$27~Crab Units above 1~TeV was measured in very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-rays with the VERITAS observatory. This is the highest flux state for Mrk 421 ever observed in VHE $γ$-rays. Data are analyzed from a coordinated campaign across multiple instruments including VHE $γ$-ray (VERITAS, MAGIC), high-energy (HE) $γ$-ray (Fermi-LAT), X-ray (Swift}, RXTE, MAXI), optical (including the GASP-WEBT collaboration …
We report the results obtained for the AGN Markarian 421 by model-fitting the data in the visibility plane, studing the proper motion of jet components, the light curve, and the spectral index of the jet features. We compare the radio data with optical light curves obtained at the Steward Observatory, considering also the optical polarization information. Mrk 421 has a bright nucleus and a one-sided jet extending towards the north-west for a few parsecs. The model-fits show that brightness distribution is well described using 6-7 circular Gaussian components, four of which are reliably identif…
We present a comprehensive analysis of 20 years worth of multi-color photometric light curves, multi-epoch optical spectra, and X-ray data of an off-nuclear variable object SDSS1133 in Mrk 177 at $z=0.0079$. The UV-optical light curves reveal that SDSS1133 experienced four outbursts in 2001, 2014, 2019, and 2021. The persistent UV-optical luminosity in the non-outbursting state is $\sim 10^{41}$ erg/s with small-scale flux variations, and peak luminosities during the outbursts reach $\sim 10^{42}$ erg/s. The optical spectra exhibit enduring broad hydrogen Balmer P-Cygni profiles with the absor…
