Quantum Annealing has proven to be a powerful tool to tackle several optimization problems. However, its performance is severely impacted by the limited connectivity of the underlying quantum hardware, compromising the quantum speedup. In this work, we present a novel approach to address these issues, by describing a method to implement non-local couplings throught the lens of Local Operations and Classical Communcations (LOCC). Non-local couplings are very versatile, harnessing the configurability of distributed quantum networks, which in turn lead to great enhancement of the physical connectivity of the underlying hardware. Furthermore, the realization of non-local couplings between distinct quantum annealing processors activates the scalability potential of distributed systems, i.e. allowing for a distributed quantum annealing system. Finally, in a more distant vision, we also show that secure multi-party quantum annealing algorithms are possible, allowing for cooperation of distrusting parties through optimization with quantum annealing and a particular type of non-local couplings.
We performed a banged-digital-analog simulation of a quantum annealing protocol in a two-qubit Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) quantum computer. Our experimental simulation employed up to 235 Trotter steps, with more than 2000 gates (pulses), and we obtained a protocol success above 80%. Given the exquisite control of the NMR quantum computer, we performed the simulation with different noise levels. We thus analyzed the reliability of the quantum annealing process, and related it to the level of entanglement produced during the protocol. Although the presence of entanglement is not a sufficie…
Quantum annealing is a way to solve a combinational optimization problem where quantum fluctuation is induced by transverse fields. Recently, a bifurcation-based quantum annealing with spin-1 particles was suggested as another mechanism to implement the quantum annealing. In the bifurcation-based quantum annealing, each spin is initially prepared in $|0\rangle$, let this state evolve by a time-dependent Hamiltonian in an adiabatic way, and we find a state spanned by $|\pm 1\rangle$ at the end of the evolution. Here, we propose a scheme to generate multipartite entanglement, namely GHZ states, …
Enhancing quantum entanglement is important for many quantum information processing applications. In this paper, we consider a protocol for entanglement enhancing in a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS), attained based on photon subtraction, photon catalysis, and photon addition. Central to such an operation is the task of mixing and detecting number states with each mode of TMSVS. We analyze various settings and find an optimal setup for improving the entanglement of the state.
Quantum annealing is an innovative idea and method for avoiding the increase of the calculation cost of the combinatorial optimization problem. Since the combinatorial optimization problems are ubiquitous, quantum annealing machine with high efficiency and scalability will give an immeasurable impact on many fields. However, the conventional quantum annealing machine may not have a high success probability for finding the solution because the energy gap closes exponentially as a function of the system size. To propose an idea for finding high success probability is one of the most important is…
Entanglement lies at the core of quantum algorithms designed to solve problems that are intractable by classical approaches. One such algorithm, quantum annealing (QA), provides a promising path to a practical quantum processor. We have built a series of scalable QA processors consisting of networks of manufactured interacting spins (qubits). Here, we use qubit tunneling spectroscopy to measure the energy eigenspectrum of two- and eight-qubit systems within one such processor, demonstrating quantum coherence in these systems. We present experimental evidence that, during a critical portion of …
We propose a strategies not only to protect but also to enhance and revive the entanglement in a double Jaynes-Cummings model. We show that such surprising features arises when Zeno-like measurements are performed during the dynamical process.
In this paper, we propose a scheme to enhance trapping of entanglement of two qubits in the environment of a photonic band gap material. Our entanglement trapping promotion scheme makes use of combined weak measurements and quantum measurement reversals. The optimal promotion of entanglement trapping can be acquired with a reasonable finite success probability by adjusting measurement strengths.
Constrained quantum annealing (CQA) is a quantum annealing approach that is designed so that constraints are satisfied without penalty terms. There is an analogy between the model for the CQA of graph coloring and a set of disordered spin chains. In the model for the CQA of graph coloring, disorder corresponds to the fluctuation of effective local fields that increase in a CQA process. Numerical simulations of effective fields and entanglement demonstrate how localization appears in the CQA. Some notable features appear in the concurrence, which is a measure of entanglement, plotted as a funct…
We show that a trapped ion chain interacting with an optical spin-dependent force shows strong frustration effects due to the interplay between long-range interactions and the dressing by optical phases. We consider a strong spin-phonon coupling regime and predict a quantum phase diagram with different competing magnetic and structural orders. In a highly frustrated region, the system shows enhanced quantum fluctuations and entanglement characteristic of spin-liquid phases. We propose and describe within a mean-field approach a quantum annealing process to induce a quasi-adiabatic evolution to…
A recent experiment [Lanting et al., PRX, (2014)] claimed to provide evidence of up to $8$-qubit entanglement in a D-Wave quantum annealing device. However, entanglement was measured using qubit tunneling spectroscopy, a technique that provides indirect access to the state of the system at intermediate times during the anneal by performing measurements at the end of the anneal with a probe qubit. In addition, an underlying assumption was that the quantum transverse-field Ising Hamiltonian, whose ground states are already highly entangled, is an appropriate model of the device, and not some oth…
For quantum annealing, as opposed to circuit based quantum computing, the solution to a computational problem is encoded in the ground state of a quantum system. Therefore its susceptibility to environmental effects is a different but not less important open question essential to a scalable implementation. In this work we use renormalization group techniques to study the effect of Ohmic baths in a regime typical for practical adiabatic quantum computation. We show qualitative change to the effective Hamiltonian as well as the reduced qubit density matrix encoding entanglement between system an…
Mermin's observation [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 65}, 1838 (1990)] that the magnitude of the violation of local realism, defined as the ratio between the quantum prediction and the classical bound, can grow exponentially with the size of the system is demonstrated using two-photon hyper-entangled states entangled in polarization and path degrees of freedom, and local measurements of polarization and path simultaneously.
I theoretically investigate how the entanglement properties of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS) can be enhanced by operating quantum-optical catalysis on each mode of the TMSVS. The quantum-optical catalysis is simply mixing one photon at the beam splitter and post-select the beam-splitter (BS) output based on detection of one photon, first proposed by Lvovsky and Mlynek [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 250401 (2002)]. I find that there exists some enhancement in the entanglement properties (namely, entanglement entropy, second-order Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation, and the fidelity of quantu…
We investigate how the entanglement properties of a two-mode state can be improved by performing a coherent superposition operation of photon subtraction and addition, proposed by Lee and Nha [Phys. Rev. A 82, 053812 (2010)], on each mode. We show that the degree of entanglement, the EPR-type correlation, and the performance of quantum teleportation can be all enhanced for the output state when the coherent operation is applied to a two-mode squeezed state. The effects of the coherent operation are more prominent than those of the mere photon subtraction and the addition particularly in the sm…
The standard quantum annealing algorithm tries to approach the ground state of a classical system by slowly decreasing the hopping rates of a quantum random walk in the configuration space of the problem, where the on-site energies are provided by the classical energy function. In a quantum reinforcement algorithm, the annealing works instead by increasing gradually the strength of the on-site energies according to the probability of finding the walker on each site of the configuration space. Here, by using the path-integral Monte Carlo simulations of the quantum algorithms, we show that annea…
The possibility of recovering and protecting the entanglement of accelerated 2-qubit and 2-qutrit systems is discussed using weak-reverse measurements. The accelerated partial entangled states are more responsive to be protected than the accelerated maximum entangled states. The accelerated coded local information in qutrit system is more robust than that encoded in a 2-qubit system, and it can be conserved even for larger values of accelerations. Meanwhile, the non-accelerated information in qubit system is not affected by the local operation compared with that depicted on qutrit system. For …
For cavity-assisted optomechanical cooling experiments, it has been shown in the literature that the cavity bandwidth needs to be smaller than the mechanical frequency in order to achieve the quantum ground state of the mechanical oscillator, which is the so-called resolved-sideband or good-cavity limit. We provide a new but physically equivalent insight into the origin of such a limit: that is information loss due to a finite cavity bandwidth. With an optimal feedback control to recover those information, we can surpass the resolved-sideband limit and achieve the quantum ground state. Interes…
A technique inspired on quantum annealing is proposed in order to obtain the classical ground state of a spin-glass by tracking the full wavefunction of a given system within the subspace of matrix product states (MPS), using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The technique is exemplified within the problem of obtention of the classical ground state of an Ising spin glass on ladder geometries. Its performance is evaluated and related to the entanglement entropy.
Quantum annealing is a promising technique which leverages quantum mechanics to solve hard optimization problems. Considerable progress has been made in the development of a physical quantum annealer, motivating the study of methods to enhance the efficiency of such a solver. In this work, we present a quantum annealing approach to measure similarity among molecular structures. Implementing real-world problems on a quantum annealer is challenging due to hardware limitations such as sparse connectivity, intrinsic control error, and limited precision. In order to overcome the limited connectivit…
We investigate the end-to-end entanglement of a general XYZ-spin chain at the non-zero temperatures. The entanglement usually vanishes at a certain critical temperature $T_c$, but external fields can make $T_c$ higher. We obtain a general statement on the increase of the critical temperature $T_c$ by the external fields. We prove that if the two end spins are separated by two spins or more, the critical temperature cannot be higher than a certain finite temperature $bar{T}_c$ ($T_c le bar{T}_c$), that is, the entanglement must vanish above the temperature $bar{T}_c$ for any values of the exter…

We find out a few ways to improve the realization of entanglement between the internal (spin) and external (position) degrees of freedom of a quantum particle, through the insertion of disordered time steps along a one-dimensional discrete time quantum walk. The disorder is introduced by a randomly chosen quantum coin obtained from a uniform distribution among infinite quantum coins or only between Hadamard and Fourier coins for all the time steps. We can also decrease the amount of disorder by alternating disordered and ordered time steps along a quantum walk or by establishing a probability …
Subtracting photons from a two-mode squeezed state is a well-known method to increase entanglement. We analyse different strategies of local photon subtraction from a two-mode squeezed state in terms of entanglement gain and success probability. We develop a general framework that incorporates imperfections and losses in all stages of the process: before, during, and after subtraction. By combining all three effects into a single efficiency parameter, we provide analytical and numerical results for subtraction strategies using photon-number-resolving and threshold detectors. We compare the ent…
Recently, it was introduced a generalization of a nonstandard step operator named the elephant quantum walk (EQW). With proper statistical distribution for the steps, that generalized EQW (gEQW) can be tuned to exhibit a myriad of dynamical scaling behavior ranging from standard diffusion to %and superdiffusion to ballistic and hyperballistic spreading. In this work, we study the influence of the statistics of the step size and the delocalization of the initial states on the entanglement entropy of the coin. Our results show that the gEQW generates maximally entangled states for almost all ini…
In a recent paper, Liu et al. [Nat. Commun. 6:6726 (2015)] claim to perform the first room temperature entanglement-enhanced phase measurement in a solid-state system. We argue here that this claim is incorrect: their measurement is not enhanced because of the entanglement in their system, but instead the enhancement comes from the fact that the phase shift is applied twice to their state.
Computational complexity theory contains a corpus of theorems and conjectures regarding the time a Turing machine will need to solve certain types of problems as a function of the input size. Nature {\em need not} be a Turing machine and, thus, these theorems do not apply directly to it. But {\em classical simulations} of physical processes are programs running on Turing machines and, as such, are subject to them. In this work, computational complexity theory is applied to classical simulations of systems performing an adiabatic quantum computation (AQC), based on an annealed extension of the …
We investigate the performance of a certain nonclassicality identifier, expressed via integrated second-order intensity moments of optical fields, in revealing bipartite entanglement of quantum-optical frequency combs (QOFCs), which are generated in both spontaneous and stimulated parametric down-conversion processes. We show that, by utilizing that nonclassicality identifier, one can well identify the entanglement of the QOFC directly from the experimentally measured intensity moments without invoking any state reconstruction techniques or homodyne detection. Moreover, we demonstrate that the…
We solve a model that has basic features that are desired for quantum annealing computations: entanglement in the ground state, controllable annealing speed, ground state energy separated by a gap during the whole evolution, and a programmable computational problem that is encoded by parameters of the Ising part of the spin Hamiltonian. Our solution enables exact nonperturbative characterization of final nonadiabatic excitations, including a scaling of their number with the annealing rate and the system size. We prove that quantum correlations can accelerate computations and, at the end of the…
Recent theoretical and experimental studies have suggested that quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation can behave similarly to quantum annealing (QA). The theoretical analysis was based on calculating transition rates between local minima, in the large spin limit using WentzelKramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation, for highly symmetric systems of ferromagnetically coupled qubits. The rate of transition was observed to scale the same in QMC and incoherent quantum tunneling, implying that there might be no quantum advantage of QA compared to QMC other than a prefactor. Quantum annealing is believed…
The interaction with the environment is one of the main obstacles to be circumvented in practical implementations of quantum information tasks. The use of local unitaries, while not changing the initial entanglement present in a given state, can enormously change its dynamics through a noisy channel, and consequently its ability to be used as a resource. This way, local unitaries provide an easy and accessible way to enhance quantum correlations in a variety of different experimental platforms. Given an initial entangled state and a certain noisy channel, what are the local unitaries providing…
In this work, we theoretically study the quantum correlations present in an optomechanical system by invoking an additional cross-Kerr coupling between the optical and mechanical mode. Under experimentally achievable conditions, we first show that a significant enhancement of the steady-state entanglement could be achieved at a considerably lower driving power, which is also extremely robust with respect to system parameters and environmental temperature. Then, we employ Gaussian quantum discord as a witness of the genuine quantumness of the correlation present in the system and discuss its de…
We study the relation between quantum fluctuations and the significant enhancement of the performance of quantum annealing in a mean-field Hamiltonian. First-order quantum phase transitions were shown to be reduced to second order by antiferromagnetic transverse interactions in a mean-field-type many-body-interacting Ising spin system in a transverse field, which means an exponential speedup of quantum annealing by adiabatic quantum computation. We investigate if and how quantum effects manifest themselves around these first- and second-order phase transitions to understand if the antiferromag…
