The interaction with the environment is one of the main obstacles to be circumvented in practical implementations of quantum information tasks. The use of local unitaries, while not changing the initial entanglement present in a given state, can enormously change its dynamics through a noisy channel, and consequently its ability to be used as a resource. This way, local unitaries provide an easy and accessible way to enhance quantum correlations in a variety of different experimental platforms. Given an initial entangled state and a certain noisy channel, what are the local unitaries providing the most robust dynamics? In this paper we solve this question considering two qubits states, together with paradigmatic and relevant noisy channels, showing its consequences for teleportation protocols and identifying cases where the most robust states are not necessarily the ones imprinting the least information about themselves into the environment. We also derive a general law relating the interplay between the total correlations in the system and environment with their mutual information built up over the noisy dynamics. Finally, we employ the IBM Quantum Experience to provide a proof-of-principle experimental implementation of our results.
The problem of conditions on the initial correlations between the system and the environment that lead to completely positive (CP) or not-completely positive (NCP) maps has been studied by various authors. Two lines of study may be discerned: one concerned with families of initial correlations that induce CP dynamics under the application of an arbitrary joint unitary on the system and environment; the other concerned with specific initial states that may be highly entangled. Here we study the latter problem, and highlight the interplay between the initial correlations and the unitary applied.…

In this work, we provide an analytical proof of the robustness of topological entanglement under a model of random local perturbations. We define a notion of average topological subsystem purity and show that, in the context of quantum double models, this quantity does detect topological order and is robust under the action of a random quantum circuit of shallow depth.

An algebraic approach to the study of entanglement entropy of quantum systems is reviewed. Starting with a state on a $C^*$-algebra, one can construct a density operator describing the state in the GNS representation state. Applications of this approach to the study of entanglement measures for systems of identical particles are outlined. The ambiguities in the definition of entropy within this approach are then related to the action of unitaries in the commutant of the representation and their relation to modular theory explained.

We introduce a class of hybrid quantum circuits, with random unitaries and projective measurements, which host long-range order in the area law entanglement phase of the steady state. Our primary example is circuits with unitaries respecting a global Ising symmetry and two competing types of measurements. The phase diagram has an area law phase with spin glass order, which undergoes a direct transition to a paramagnetic phase with volume law entanglement, as well as a critical regime. Using mutual information diagnostics, we find that such entanglement transitions preserving a global symmetry …
Enhancing quantum entanglement is important for many quantum information processing applications. In this paper, we consider a protocol for entanglement enhancing in a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS), attained based on photon subtraction, photon catalysis, and photon addition. Central to such an operation is the task of mixing and detecting number states with each mode of TMSVS. We analyze various settings and find an optimal setup for improving the entanglement of the state.
Efficient verification of quantum states and gates is crucial to the development of quantum technologies. Although the sample complexities of quantum state verification and quantum gate verification have been studied by many researchers, the number of experimental settings has received little attention and is poorly understood. In this work we study systematically quantum state verification and quantum gate verification with a focus on the number of experimental settings. We show that any bipartite pure state can be verified by only two measurement settings based on local projective measuremen…
Maximally entangled bipartite unitary operators or gates find various applications from quantum information to being building blocks of minimal models of many-body quantum chaos, and have been referred to as "dual unitaries". Dual unitary operators that can create the maximum average entanglement when acting on product states have to satisfy additional constraints. These have been called "2-unitaries" and are examples of perfect tensors that can be used to construct absolutely maximally entangled states of four parties. Hitherto, no systematic method exists, in any local dimension, which resul…
We analyze the optimal basis for generating the maximum relative entropy of quantum coherence by an arbitrary gate on a two-qubit system. The optimal basis is not unique, and the high quantum coherence generating gates are also typically high entanglement generating ones and vice versa. However, the profile of the relative frequencies of Haar random unitaries generating different amounts of entanglement for a fixed amount of quantum coherence is different from the one in which the roles of entanglement and quantum coherence are reversed, although both follow the beta distribution.

The inevitable dissipative interaction of an entangled quantum system with its environment causes degradation in quantum correlations present in the system. This can lead to a finite-time disappearance of entanglement, which is known as entanglement sudden death (ESD). Here, we consider an initially entangled qubit-qutrit system and a dissipative noise which leads to ESD, and propose a set of local unitary operations, which when applied on the qubit, qutrit, or both subsystems during the decoherence process, cause ESD to be hastened, delayed, or avoided altogether, depending on its time of app…
The notion of entanglement of quantum states is usually defined with respect to a fixed bipartition. Indeed, a global basis change can always map an entangled state to a separable one. The situation is however different when considering a set of states. In this work we define the notion of an "absolutely entangled set" of quantum states: for any possible choice of global basis, at least one of the states in the set is entangled. Hence, for all bipartitions, i.e. any possible definition of the subsystems, the set features entanglement. We present a minimum example of this phenomenon, with a set…
