We introduce a class of hybrid quantum circuits, with random unitaries and projective measurements, which host long-range order in the area law entanglement phase of the steady state. Our primary example is circuits with unitaries respecting a global Ising symmetry and two competing types of measurements. The phase diagram has an area law phase with spin glass order, which undergoes a direct transition to a paramagnetic phase with volume law entanglement, as well as a critical regime. Using mutual information diagnostics, we find that such entanglement transitions preserving a global symmetry are in new universality classes. We analyze generalizations of such hybrid circuits to higher dimensions, which allow for coexistence of order and volume law entanglement, as well as topological order without any symmetry restrictions.
Topological phase transition induced by spatially-tuned single-site measurement is investigated in a measurement-only circuit, in which three different types of projective measurement operator. Specific spatial setting and combination of commutation relations among three measurement operators generate such a transition. In practice, symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase is recovered on even sublattice by eliminating a projective measurement disturbing the SPT via applying another spatially-tuned projective measurement on odd sublattice. We further investigate the critical properties of th…
In a periodically driven (Floquet) system, there is the possibility for new phases of matter, not present in stationary systems, protected by discrete time-translation symmetry. This includes topological phases protected in part by time-translation symmetry, as well as phases distinguished by the spontaneous breaking of this symmetry, dubbed "Floquet time crystals". We show that such phases of matter can exist in the pre-thermal regime of periodically-driven systems, which exists generically for sufficiently large drive frequency, thereby eliminating the need for integrability or strong quench…
We introduce the concepts of a symmetry-protected sign problem and symmetry-protected magic to study the complexity of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of matter. In particular, we say a state has a symmetry-protected sign problem or symmetry-protected magic, if finite-depth quantum circuits composed of symmetric gates are unable to transform the state into a non-negative real wave function or stabilizer state, respectively. We prove that states belonging to certain SPT phases have these properties, as a result of their anomalous symmetry action at a boundary. For example, we find t…
We present an exactly solvable model for one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases with $\mathbb{Z}_N\times\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry. The model works by binding point topological defects (domain walls) of one symmetry to charges of the other and condensing these bound states. Binding single topological defects to charges leads to symmetry-protected topological phases, while binding multiple topological defects to charges leads to phases with a combination of symmetry-breaking and topological properties.
We classify subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) phases in $3+1$D protected by planar subsystem symmetries, which are dual to abelian fracton topological orders. We distinguish between weak SSPTs, which can be constructed by stacking $2+1$D SPTs, and strong SSPTs, which cannot. We identify signatures of strong phases, and show by explicit construction that such phases exist. A classification of strong phases is presented for an arbitrary finite abelian group. Finally, we show that fracton orders realizable via $p$-string condensation are dual to weak SSPTs, while strong SSPTs do not…
The ground state phase diagram is obtained for an antiferromagnetic spin-1 anisotropic biquadratic model. With the help of symmetry and duality transformations, three symmetry-protected trivial phases and one dimerized symmetry breaking phase are found. Local and nonlocal order parameters are identified to characterize these phases. Quantum phase transitions between the symmetry-protected trivial phases belong to the Gaussian universality class with central charge c = 1, and quantum phase transitions from the symmetry-protected trivial phases to the dimerized phase belong to the Ising universa…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are topologically characterized in quantum quench dynamics in topological systems. In this paper, we study Loschmidt amplitudes and DQPTs in quantum quenches in mirror-symmetric topological phases. Based on the topological classification of mirror-symmetric insulators, we show that mirror symmetry creates symmetry-protected DQPTs. If mirror symmetry is present, topologically robust DQPTs can occur in quantum quenches, even in high-dimensional time-reversal invariant systems. Then, we also show that symmetry-protected DQPTs occur in quenches in two-di…
We introduce a ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index for time reversal invariant Hamiltonians with unique gapped ground state on quantum spin chains. We show this is an invariant of a $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians.
The second law of thermodynamics points to the existence of an `arrow of time', along which entropy only increases. This arises despite the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) of the microscopic laws of nature. Within quantum theory, TRS underpins many interesting phenomena, most notably topological insulators and the Haldane phase of quantum magnets. Here, we demonstrate that such TRS-protected effects are fundamentally unstable against coupling to an environment. Irrespective of the microscopic symmetries, interactions between a quantum system and its surroundings facilitate processes which would b…
We introduce an index for symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of infinite fermionic chains with an on-site symmetry given by a finite group $G$. This index takes values in $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times H^1(G,\mathbb{Z}_2) \times H^2(G, U(1)_{\mathfrak{p}})$ with a generalized Wall group law under stacking. We show that this index is an invariant of the classification of SPT phases. When the ground state is translation invariant and has reduced density matrices with uniformly bounded rank on finite intervals, we derive a fermionic matrix product representative of this state with on-site symmetry…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the bond-alternating $S=2$ quantum spin chain with the $XXZ$ and on-site anisotropies. For the on-site anisotropies, in addition to the popular $D_2 \sum_j (S_j^z)^2$ term, we consider the $D_4 \sum_j (S_j^z)^4$ term. Mainly we use the exact diagonalization and the level spectroscopy analysis. We show that the Haldane state, large-$D$ state and the Dimer2 state belong to the same trivial phase, by finding the existence of adiabatic paths directly connecting these states without the quantum phase transition. Similarly, we show that the intermedia…
We show how a large family of interacting nonequilibrium phases of matter can arise from the presence of multiple time-translation symmetries, which occur by quasiperiodically driving an isolated quantum many-body system with two or more incommensurate frequencies. These phases are fundamentally different from those realizable in time-independent or periodically-driven (Floquet) settings. Focusing on high-frequency drives with smooth time-dependence, we rigorously establish general conditions for which these phases are stable in a parametrically long-lived `preheating' regime. We develop a for…
We consider SPT-phases with on-site finite group $G$ symmetry $β$ for two-dimensional quantum spin systems. We show that they have $H^{3}(G,{\mathbb T})$-valued invariant.
We show that the $Z_N$ Berry phase (Berry phase quantized into $2π/N$) provides a useful tool to characterize symmetry protected topological phases with correlation that can be directly computed through numerics of a relatively small system size. The $Z_N$ Berry phase is defined in a $N-1$ dimensional parameter space of local gauge twists, which we call "synthetic Brillouin zone", and an appropriate choice of an integration path consistent with the symmetry of the system ensures exact quantization of the Berry phase. We demonstrate the usefulness of the $Z_N$ Berry phase by studying two 1D mod…
The local Z_N quantized Berry phase for the SU(N) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin model is formulated. This quantity, which is a generalization of the local Z_2 Berry phase for SU(2) symmetry, has a direct correspondence to the number of singlet pairs spanning on a particular bond, and is effective as a tool to characterize and classify the various symmetry protected topological phases of one-dimensional SU(N) spin systems. We extend the path-integral quantum Monte Carlo method for the Z_2 Berry phase in order to calculate the ZN Berry phase numerically. We demonstrate our method by calculat…
In thermal phases, the quantum coherence of individual degrees of freedom is rapidly lost to the environment. Many-body localized (MBL) phases limit the spread of this coherence and appear promising for quantum information applications. However, such applications require not just long coherence times but also a means to transport and manipulate information. We demonstrate that this can be done in a one dimensional model of interacting spins at infinite temperature. Our protocol utilizes protected qubits which emerge at the boundary between topological and trivial phases. State transfer occurs …
We study spin systems which exhibit symmetries that act on a fractal subset of sites, with fractal structures generated by linear cellular automata. In addition to the trivial symmetric paramagnet and spontaneously symmetry broken phases, we construct additional fractal symmetry protected topological (FSPT) phases via a decorated defect approach. Such phases have edges along which fractal symmetries are realized projectively, leading to a symmetry protected degeneracy along the edge. Isolated excitations above the ground state are symmetry protected fractons, which cannot be moved without brea…
