Network-controlled repeaters (NCR) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) are being considered by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as valid candidates for range extension in millimeter-wave (mmW, 30-300 GHz frequency) 5G and 6G networks, to counteract large path and penetration losses. Nowadays, there is no definite answer on which of the two technologies is better for coverage extension, since existing comparative studies focused either on communication-related metrics only or on very large-scale analysis, without physical layer details or environmental considerations. This paper aims at comparing NCR and RIS solutions in terms of coverage in an urban scenario. Numerical results suggest a possible usage of both technologies, showing that preferring RIS or NCR depends not only on their physical capabilities and cost (e.g., the number of antenna elements, the angular separation between panels for NCR, etc.) but also on environment geometry.
Propagation channel characteristics are substantially different in sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. A typical mmWave link experiences more than an order-of-magnitude larger path loss and is more susceptible to blockages than a traditional sub-6 GHz link. Therefore, extensive measurement campaigns with efficient channel sounders are needed for a complete understanding of the mmWave propagation channel characteristics. In addition, solutions should be sought to overcome the outage problems associated with the mmWave bands and to achieve acceptable communication performance. In this …

Secret key generation in physical layer security exploits the unpredictable random nature of wireless channels. We consider RIS to have continuous individual phase shifts (CIPS) and derive the RIS-assisted reflection channel distribution with its parameters. Then, we…
Smart Repeaters (SR) can potentially enhance the coverage in Millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless communications. However, the angular coverage of the existing two-panel SR is too limited to make the SR a truly cost-effective mmWave range extender. This paper proposes the usage of a tri-sectoral Advanced SR (ASR) to extend the angular coverage with respect to conventional SR. We propose a multi-user precoder optimization for ASR in a downlink multi-carrier communication system to maximize the number of served User Equipments (UEs) while guaranteeing constraints on per-UE rate and time-frequency r…
Millimeter wave (MmWave) systems are vulnerable to blockages, which cause signal drop and link outage. One solution is to deploy reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to add a strong non-line-of-sight path from the transmitter to receiver. In this paper, we find the optimal location, height and downtilt of RIS working in a realistic vehicular scenario. Because of the proximity between the RIS and the vehicles, and th…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning systems. In this paper, we consider multiple mobile users (MUs) positioning problem in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-division duplex (TDD) mmWave systems aided by the RIS. We derive the expression for the space-time channel response vector (STCRV) as a novel type of fingerprint. The STCRV consists of the multipath channel characteristics, e.g., time delay and angle of arrival (AOA), which is related to the position of the MU. By using the STCRV as input, we propose a nove…
A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) consists of massive meta elements, which results in a reflection path between a base station (BS) and user equipment (UE). In wireless localization, this reflection path aids in positioning accuracy, especially when the line-of-sight (LOS) path is subject to severe blockage and fading. We develop a RIS-aided positioning framework to locate a UE in environments where the LOS path may or may not be available. We first estimate the RIS-aided channel parameters from the received signals at the UE. To reduce algorithmic complexity, we propose a linear comb…
In this letter, we focus on the hybrid precoding (HP) design for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided multi-user (MU) millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems. Specifically, we aim to minimize the mean-squared-error (MSE) between the received symbols and the transmitted symbols by jointly optimizing the analog-digital HP at the base-station (BS) and the phase shifts (PSs) at the RIS, where the non-convex element-wise constant-modulus constraints for the analog precoding and the PSs are tackled by resorting to the gradient-projection (GP) method. We analytically prove the co…
To support faster and more efficient networks, mobile operators and service providers are bringing 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) networks indoors. However, due to their high directionality, mmWave links are extremely vulnerable to blockage by walls and human mobility. To address these challenges, we exploit advances in artificially engineered metamaterials, introducing a wall-mounted smart metasurface, called mmWall, that enables a fast mmWave beam relay through the wall and redirects the beam power to another direction when a human body blocks a line-of-sight path. Moreover, our mmWall supports…
Channel acquisition is one of the main challenges for the deployment of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided communication systems. Specifically, we propose a novel channel estimation protocol for the above system to estimate the cascaded channels, which are the products of the channels from the bas…
