This paper gives a framework to study a continuum limit of a gradient flow on a graph where the number of vertices increases in an appropriate way. As examples we prove the convergence of a discrete total variation flow and a discrete Allen--Cahn flow on discretised tori to their respective continuum limits.
We demonstrate the validity of Murray's law, which represents a scaling relation for branch conductivities in a transportation network, for discrete and continuum models of biological networks. We first consider discrete networks with general metabolic coefficient and multiple branching nodes and derive a generalization of the classical 3/4-law. Next we prove an analogue of the discrete Murray's law for the continuum system obtained in the continuum limit of the discrete model on a rectangular mesh. Finally, we consider a continuum model derived from phenomenological considerations and show th…
Under suitable technical conditions we show that minimisers of the discrete interaction energy for attractive-repulsive potentials converge to minimisers of the corresponding continuum energy as the number of particles goes to infinity. We prove that the discrete interaction energy $Γ$-converges in the narrow topology to the continuum interaction energy. As an important part of the proof we study support and regularity properties of discrete minimisers: we show that continuum minimisers belong to suitable Morrey spaces and we introduce the set of empirical Morrey measures as a natural discrete…
In the recent trend of extending discrete-to-continuum limit passages for gradient flows of single-species particle systems with singular and nonlocal interactions to particles of opposite sign, any annihilation effect of particles with opposite sign has been side-stepped. We present the first rigorous discrete-to-continuum limit passage which includes annihilation. This result paves the way to applications such as vortices, charged particles, and dislocations. In more detail, the discrete setting of our discrete-to-continuum limit passage is given by particles on the real line. Particles of t…
Motivated by recent physics papers describing the formation of biological transport networks we study a discrete model proposed by Hu and Cai consisting of an energy consumption function constrained by a linear system on a graph. For the spatially two-dimensional rectangular setting we prove the rigorous continuum limit of the constrained energy functional as the number of nodes of the underlying graph tends to infinity and the edge lengths shrink to zero uniformly. The proof is based on reformulating the discrete energy functional as a sequence of integral functionals and proving their $Γ$-co…
We consider discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations (DNLS) on the lattice $h\mathbb{Z}^d$ whose linear part is determined by the discrete Laplacian which accounts only for nearest neighbor interactions, or by its fractional power. We show that in the continuum limit $h\to 0$, solutions to DNLS converge strongly in $L^2$ to those to the corresponding continuum equations, but a precise rate of convergence is also calculated. In particular cases, this result improves weak convergence in Kirkpatrick, Lenzmann and Staffilani \cite{KLS}. Our proof is based on a suitable adjustment of dispersive PDE…
We study the atomistic-to-continuum limit of a class of energy functionals for crystalline materials via Gamma-convergence. We consider energy densities that may depend on interactions between all points of the lattice and we give conditions that ensure compactness and integral-representation of the continuum limit on the space of special functions of bounded variation. This abstract result is complemented by a homogenization theorem, where we provide sufficient conditions on the energy densities under which bulk- and surface contributions decouple in the limit. The results are applied to long…
In this paper we rigorously investigate the emergence of defects on Nematic Shells with genus different from one. This phenomenon is related to a non trivial interplay between the topology of the shell and the alignment of the director field. To this end, we consider a discrete $XY$ system on the shell $M$, described by a tangent vector field with unit norm sitting at the vertices of a triangulation of the shell. Defects emerge when we let the mesh size of the triangulation go to zero, namely in the discrete-to-continuum limit. In this paper we investigate the discrete-to-continuum limit in te…
We prove a compactness and integral-representation theorem for sequences of families of lattice energies describing atomistic interactions defined on lattices with vanishing lattice spacing. The densities of these energies may depend on interactions between all points of the corresponding lattice contained in a reference set. We give conditions that ensure that the limit is an integral defined on a Sobolev space. A homogenization theorem is also proved. The result is applied to multibody interactions corresponding to discrete Jacobian determinants and to linearizations of Lennard-Jones energie…
We consider the dispersion managed nonlinear Schrödinger equation with power-law nonlinearity and its discrete version of equations with step size $h\in(0,1]$. We prove that the solutions of the discrete equations strongly converge in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ to the solution of the dispersion managed NLS as $h\to 0$ after showing the global well-posedness of the discrete equations.
In materials science, wedge disclinations are defects caused by angular mismatches in the crystallographic lattice. To describe such disclinations, we introduce an atomistic model in planar domains. This model is given by a nearest-neighbor-type energy for the atomic bonds with an additional term to penalize change in volume. We enforce the appearance of disclinations by means of a special boundary condition. Our main result is the discrete-to-continuum limit of this energy as the lattice size tends to zero. Our proof method is relaxation of the energy. The main mathematical novelty of our pro…
We study an atomistic model that describes the microscopic formation of material voids inside elastically stressed solids under an additional curvature regularization at the discrete level. Using a discrete-to-continuum analysis, by means of a recent geometric rigidity result in variable domains [27] and Γ-convergence tools, we rigorously derive effective linearized continuum models for elastically stressed solids with material voids in three-dimensional elasticity.
We present a spatial hybrid discrete-continuum modelling framework for the interaction dynamics between tumour cells and cytotoxic T cells, which play a pivotal role in the immune response against tumours. In this framework, tumour cells and T cells are modelled as individual agents while chemokines that drive the chemotactic movement of T cells towards the tumour are modelled as a continuum. We formally derive the continuum counterpart of this model, which is given by a coupled system that comprises an integro-differential equation for the density of tumour cells, a partial differential equat…
We study the discrete-to-continuum limit of ferromagnetic spin systems when the lattice spacing tends to zero. We assume that the atoms are part of a (maybe) non-periodic lattice close to a flat set in a lower dimensional space, typically a plate in three dimensions. Scaling the particle positions by a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ we perform a $Γ$-convergence analysis of properly rescaled interfacial-type energies. We show that, up to subsequences, the energies converge to a surface integral defined on partitions of the flat space. In the second part of the paper we address the issue of sto…
A low frequency approximation of the discrete Sommerfeld diffraction problems, involving the scattering of a time harmonic lattice wave incident on square lattice by a discrete Dirichlet or a discrete Neumann half-plane, is investigated. It is established that the exact solution of the discrete model converges to the solution of the continuum model, i.e. the continuous Sommerfeld problem, in certain discrete Sobolev space defined by W. Hackbusch. The proof of convergence has been provided for both types of boundary conditions when the imaginary part of incident wavenumber is positive.
We prove discrete-to-continuum convergence of interaction energies defined on lattices in the Euclidean space (with interactions beyond nearest neighbours) to a crystalline perimeter, and we discuss the possible Wulff shapes obtainable in this way. Exploiting the "multigrid construction" of quasiperiodic tilings (which is an extension of De Bruijn's "pentagrid" construction of Penrose tilings) we adapt the same techniques to also find the macroscopical homogenized perimeter when we microscopically rescale a given quasiperiodic tiling.
Enlarging on Parts I, II, and III we write more equations in the desired format of the extended abstract theory of composites. We focus on a multitude of equations involving higher order derivatives. The motivation is that results and methods in the theory of composites then extend to these equations.
We study a discrete approximation of functionals depending on nonlocal gradients. The discretized functionals are proved to be coercive in classical Sobolev spaces
We consider dynamics driven by interaction energies on graphs. We introduce graph analogues of the continuum nonlocal-interaction equation and interpret them as gradient flows with respect to a graph Wasserstein distance. The particular Wasserstein distance we consider arises from the graph analogue of the Benamou-Brenier formulation where the graph continuity equation uses an upwind interpolation to define the density along the edges. While this approach has both theoretical and computational advantages, the resulting distance is only a quasi-metric. We investigate this quasi-metric both on g…
