The observations of optical and near-infrared counterparts of binary neutron star mergers not only enrich our knowledge about the abundance of heavy elements in the Universe, or help reveal the remnant object just after the merger as generally known, but also can effectively constrain dense nuclear matter properties and the equation of state (EOS) in the interior of the merging stars. Following the relativistic mean-field description of nuclear matter, we perform the Bayesian inference of the EOS and the nuclear matter properties using the first multi-messenger event GW170817/AT2017gfo, together with the NICER mass-radius measurements of pulsars. The kilonova is described by a radiation-transfer model with the dynamical ejecta, and light curves connect with the EOS through the quasi-universal relations between the ejecta properties (the ejected mass, velocity, opacity or electron fraction) and binary parameters (the mass ratio and reduced tidal deformability). It is found that the posterior distributions of the reduced tidal deformability from the AT2017gfo analysis display a bimodal structure, with the first peak enhanced by the GW170817 data, leading to slightly softened posterior EOSs, while the second peak cannot be achieved by a nuclear EOS with saturation properties in their empirical ranges. The inclusion of NICER data in our analyses results in stiffened EOS posterior because of the massive pulsar PSR J0740+6620. We give results at nuclear saturation density for the nuclear incompressibility, the symmetry energy and its slope, as well as the nucleon effective mass, from our analysis of those observational data.
We try to constraints some of the nuclear matter parameters such as symmetry energy ($J$) and its slope ($L$) from the recent inferred data of the PREX-2. Other nuclear matter parameters are adopted from {\bf [Phys. Rev. C 85 035201 (2012), Phys. Rev. C 90 055203 (2014)]} papers and the linear correlation among them are checked by using the Pearson's formula. We find the correlation between $J-L$, $K_τ-J$ and $K_τ-L$ with coefficients 0.85, 0.81 and 0.76 respectively. The neutron star properties such as mass and radius are calculated with 50 unified equation of states. The results are consiste…
We constrain the equation of state of quark stars within the Bayesian statistical approach using the mass and radius measurements of PSR J0030+0451 from NICER. Three types of bag models, with and without non-zero finite quark mass and/or superfluidity, are employed for quark stars made up with self-bound strange quark matter. We find the $90\%$ posterior credible boundary around the most probable values of the quark star maximum mass is $M_{\rm TOV}=2.38_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\,M_{\odot}$, within the model flexibility of the finite quark mass, the quark pairing gap, and the perturbative contribution …
In recent years our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars has significantly improved by analyzing multimessenger data from radio/X-ray pulsars, gravitational wave events, and from nuclear physics constraints. Here we study the additional impact on the EOS from the jointly estimated mass and radius of PSR J0740+6620, presented in Riley et al. (2021) by analyzing a combined dataset from X-ray telescopes NICER and XMM-Newton. We employ two different high-density EOS parameterizations: a piecewise-polytropic (PP) model and a model based on the speed of sound in…
We perform a Bayesian analysis of the maximum mass $M_{\rm TOV}$ of neutron stars with a quark core, incorporating the observational data from tidal deformability of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass and radius of PSR J0030+0451 as detected by \nicer. The analysis is performed under the assumption that the hadron-quark phase transition is of first order, where the low-density hadronic matter described in a unified manner by the soft QMF or the stiff DD2 equation of state (EOS) transforms into a high-density phase of quark matter modeled by the gener…

Using a extended version of the Quantum Hadrodynamics (QHD), I propose a new microscopic equation of state (EoS) able to correctly reproduce the main properties of symmetric nuclear matter at the saturation density, as well produce massive neutron stars and satisfactory results for the radius and the tidal parameter $Λ$. I show that even when hyperons are present, this EoS is able to reproduce at least 2.00 solar masses neutron star. The constraints about the radius of a $2.00M_\odot$ and the minimum mass that enable direct Urca effect are also checked.
We demonstrate that future radius measurement of the NICER mission have the potential to reveal the existence of a strong phase transition in dense neutron star matter by confirming the existence of so called twin stars, compact star configurations with the same mass but different radii. The latest radius constraints from NICER for the pulsars J0740+6620 as well as J0030+0451 are discussed using relativistic mean field equations of state with varying stiffness, connected with a first order phase transition to quark matter. We show, that twin star solutions are compatible with the new radius co…
In the past few years, new observations of neutron stars and neutron-star mergers have provided a wealth of data that allow one to constrain the equation of state of nuclear matter at densities above nuclear saturation density. However, most observations were based on neutron stars with masses of about 1.4 solar masses, probing densities up to $\sim$ 3-4 times the nuclear saturation density. Even higher densities are probed inside massive neutron stars such as PSR J0740+6620. Very recently, new radio observations provided an update to the mass estimate for PSR J0740+6620 and X-ray observations…
By directly inverting several neutron star observables in the three-dimensional parameter space for the Equation of State of super-dense neutron-rich nuclear matter, we show that the lower radius limit for PSR J0740+6620 of mass $2.08\pm 0.07~M_{\odot}$ from Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER)'s very recent observation sets a much tighter lower boundary than previously known for nuclear symmetry energy in the density range of $(1.0\sim 3.0)$ times the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter. The super-soft symmetry energy leading to the formation of proton polarons in this de…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) presents an exciting new capability for exploring the modulation properties of X-ray emitting neutron stars, including large area, low background, extremely precise absolute event time stamps, superb low-energy response and flexible scheduling. The Pulsation Searches and Multiwavelength Coordination working group has designed a 2.5 Ms observing program to search for emission and characterize the modulation properties of about 30 known or suspected neutron star sources across a number of source categories. A key early goal will be to search…
We perform a Bayesian analysis of neutrons star moment of inertia by utilizing the available gravitational-wave data from LIGO/Virgo (GW170817 and GW190425) and mass-radius measurements from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (PSR J0030+0415 and PSR J0740+6620), incorporating the possible phase transition in the pulsar inner core. We find that the moment of inertia of pulsar A in the double pulsar binary J0737-3039 is $\sim1.30\times10^{45}\,{\rm g\,cm^2}$, which only slightly depends on the employed hadronic equation of states. We also demonstrate how a moment of inertia measureme…
We used two XMM-Newton and six Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations to investigate the fractional rms amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53. We studied, for the first time, the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 down to 0.2 keV. We find that, as the energy increases from 0.2 keV to 3 keV, the rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs increases, different from the decreasing trend that has been previously observed above 3 keV. This finding has not yet been predicted by…
The recent NICER measurement of the radius of the neutron star PSR J0740+6620, and the inferred small variation of radii from 1.4$M_\odot$ to 2.1$M_\odot$, reveal key features of the equation of state of neutron star matter. The pressure rises rapidly in the regime of baryon density $n \sim$ 2-4 times nuclear saturation density, $n_0$ -- the region where we expect hadronic matter to be undergoing transformation into quark matter -- and the pressure in the nuclear regime is greater than predicted by microscopic many-body variational calculations of nuclear matter. To incorporate these insights …
The NICER Collaboration recently reported the measurement of the mass and radius of a pulsar PSR J0030+0451. We here use this new measurement to constrain one of the higher-order nuclear matter parameters $K_{\mathrm{sym,0}}$. We further combine the tidal measurement of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 by LIGO/Virgo to derive a joint 1-$σ$ constraint as $K_{\mathrm{sym,0}} = -102^{+71}_{-72}$ MeV. We believe this is the most reliable bound on the parameter to date under the assumption that there is no new physics above the saturation density which impacts neutron star observations.
We present Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Serpens X-1 during the early mission phase in 2017. With the high spectral sensitivity and low-energy X-ray passband of NICER, we are able to detect the Fe L line complex in addition to the signature broad, asymmetric Fe K line. We confirm the presence of these lines by comparing the NICER data to archival observations with XMM-Newton/RGS and NuSTAR. Both features originate close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). When modeling the lines with the relativistic line mo…
The Neutron-star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) is an X-ray astrophysics payload that will be placed on the International Space Station. Its primary science goal is to measure with high accuracy the pulse profiles that arise from the non-uniform thermal surface emission of rotation-powered pulsars. Modeling general relativistic effects on the profiles will lead to measuring the radii of these neutron stars and to constraining their equation of state. Achieving this goal will depend, among other things, on accurate knowledge of the source, sky, and instrument backgrounds. We use here sim…
In this work we investigate neutron stars (NS) in $f(\mathtt{R,L_m})$ theory of gravity for the case $f(\mathtt{R,L_m}) = \mathtt{R} + \mathtt{L_m} + σ\mathtt{R}\mathtt{L_m}$, where $\mathtt{R}$ is the Ricci scalar and $\mathtt{L_m}$ the Lagrangian matter density. In the term $σ\mathtt{R}\mathtt{L_m}$, $σ$ represents the coupling between the gravitational and particles fields. For the first time the hydrostatic equilibrium equations in the theory are solved considering realistic equations of state and NS masses and radii obtained are subject to joint constrains from massive pulsars, the gravit…
We analyze families of hybrid equations of state of cold QCD matter, which combine input from gauge/gravity duality and from various ab initio methods for nuclear matter at low density, and predict that all neutron stars are fully hadronic without quark matter cores. We focus on constraints from recent measurements by the NICER telescope on the radius and mass of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0740+6620. These results are found to be consistent with our approach: they set only mild constraints on the hybrid equations of state, and favor the most natural models which are relatively stiff at low de…
Neutron stars are not only of astrophysical interest, but are also of great interest to nuclear physicists, because their attributes can be used to determine the properties of the dense matter in their cores. One of the most informative approaches for determining the equation of state of this dense matter is to measure both a star's equatorial circumferential radius $R_e$ and its gravitational mass $M$. Here we report estimates of the mass and radius of the isolated 205.53 Hz millisecond pulsar PSR J0030+0451 obtained using a Bayesian inference approach to analyze its energy-dependent thermal …

We describe the model of surface emission from a rapidly rotating neutron star that is applied to Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray data of millisecond pulsars in order to statistically constrain the neutron star mass-radius relation and dense matter equation of state. To ensure that the associated calculations are both accurate and precise, we conduct an extensive suite of verification tests between our numerical codes for both the Schwarzschild + Doppler and Oblate Schwarzschild approximations, and compare both approximations against exact numerical calculations. We find super…
The NICER collaboration recently published a joint estimate of the mass and the radius of PSR J0030+0451, derived via X-ray pulse-profile modeling. Raaijmakers et al. (2019) explored the implications of this measurement for the dense matter equation of state (EOS) using two parameterizations of the high-density EOS: a piecewise-polytropic model, and a model based on the speed of sound in neutron stars. In this work we obtain further constraints on the EOS following this approach, but we also include information about the tidal deformability of neutron stars from the gravitational wave signal o…
We report on the first simultaneous $NICER$ and $NuSTAR$ observations of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1735$-$44, obtained in 2018 August. The source was at a luminosity of $\sim1.8~(D/5.6\ \mathrm{kpc})^{2}\times10^{37}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ in the $0.4-30$ keV band. We account for the continuum emission with two different continuum descriptions that have been used to model the source previously. Despite the choice in continuum model, the combined passband reveals a broad Fe K line indicative of reflection in the spectrum. In order to account for the reflection spectrum we utilize a…
Accretion disks around neutron stars regularly undergo sudden strong irradiation by Type I X-ray bursts powered by unstable thermonuclear burning on the stellar surface. We investigate the impact on the disk during one of the first X-ray burst observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on the International Space Station. The burst is seen from Aql X-1 during the hard spectral state. In addition to thermal emission from the neutron star, the burst spectrum exhibits an excess of soft X-ray photons below 1 keV, where NICER's sensitivity peaks. We interpret the excess…
The holographic models for dense QCD matter work surprisingly well. A general implication seems that the deconfinement phase transition dictates the maximum mass of neutron stars. The nuclear matter phase turns out to be rather stiff which, if continuously merged with nuclear matter models based on effective field theories, leads to the conclusion that neutron stars do not have quark matter cores in the light of all current astrophysical data. We comment that as the perturbative QCD results are in stark contrast with strong coupling results, any future simulations of neutron star mergers incor…
Thermally emitting X-ray isolated neutron stars represent excellent targets for testing cooling surface emission and atmosphere models, which are used to infer physical parameters of the neutron star. Among the seven known members of this class, RX J1605.3+3249 is the only one that still lacks confirmation of its spin period. Here we analyze NICER and XMM-Newton observations of RX J1605.3+3249, in order to address its timing and spectral behavior. Contrary to a previous tentative detection, but in agreement with the recent work by Pires et al. (2019), we find no significant pulsation with puls…
PSR J0740$+$6620 has a gravitational mass of $2.08\pm 0.07~M_\odot$, which is the highest reliably determined mass of any neutron star. As a result, a measurement of its radius will provide unique insight into the properties of neutron star core matter at high densities. Here we report a radius measurement based on fits of rotating hot spot patterns to Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM-Newton) X-ray observations. We find that the equatorial circumferential radius of PSR J0740$+$6620 is $13.7^{+2.6}_{-1.5}$ km (68%). We apply our measurement, combine…
We present the detection of 51 thermonuclear X-ray bursts observed from 4U 1636-536 by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) over the course of a three year monitoring campaign. We performed time resolved spectroscopy for 40 of these bursts and showed the existence of a strong soft excess in all the burst spectra. The excess emission can be characterized by the use of a scaling factor (f_a method) to the persistent emission of the source, which is attributed to the increased mass accretion rate on to the neutron star due to Poynting-Robertson drag. The soft excess emission can…
We present the set of deep Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) X-ray timing observations of the nearby rotation-powered millisecond pulsars PSRs J0437-4715, J0030+0451, J1231-1411, and J2124-3358, selected as targets for constraining the mass-radius relation of neutron stars and the dense matter equation of state via modeling of their pulsed thermal X-ray emission. We describe the instrument, observations, and data processing/reduction procedures, as well as the series of investigations conducted to ensure that the properties of the data sets are suitable for parameter estimatio…
Both the mass and radius of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0030+0451 have been inferred via pulse-profile modeling of X-ray data obtained by NASA's NICER mission. In this Letter we study the implications of the mass-radius inference reported for this source by Riley et al. (2019) for the dense matter equation of state (EOS), in the context of prior information from nuclear physics at low densities. Using a Bayesian framework we infer central densities and EOS properties for two choices of high-density extensions: a piecewise-polytropic model and a model based on assumptions of the speed of sound …
We describe the X-ray pulse profile models we use, and how we use them, to analyze Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars to obtain information about the mass-radius relation of neutron stars and the equation of state of the dense matter in their cores. Here we detail our modeling of the observed profile of PSR J0030+0451 that we analyzed in Miller et al. (2019) and Riley et al. (2019) and describe a cross-verification of computations of the pulse profiles of a star with R/M 3, in case stars this compact need to be considered in …
The Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) is expected to launch in early 2017 and will gather X-ray data on neutron stars and other high-energy sources from a berth on the International Space Station. Its prime scientific goal is to measure the masses and radii of non-accreting neutron stars via fits to the energy-dependent waveforms produced by the rotation of hot spots on their surfaces. These measurements will provide valuable input to theoretical models of cold matter beyond nuclear density. Here we propose that PSR J1614$-$2230, despite its low count rate, is a promising sour…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) has extensively monitored the August 2019 outburst of the 401 Hz millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. In this Letter, we report on the detection of a bright helium-fueled Type I X-ray burst. With a bolometric peak flux of $(2.3\pm0.1)\times 10^{-7}$ erg/cm^2/s, this was the brightest X-ray burst among all bursting sources observed with NICER to date. The burst shows a remarkable two-stage evolution in flux, emission lines at $1.0$ keV and $6.7$ keV, and burst oscillations at the known pulsar spin frequency, with $\approx4$\% fraction…
We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of mHz X-ray brightness oscillations from the "clocked burster." NICER observed the source in the periods 2017 June 20 - 29, July 11 - 13, and September 9 - 15, for a total useful exposure of 34 ks. Two consecutive dwells obtained on 2017 September 9 revealed highly significant oscillations at a frequency of 8 mHz. The fractional, sinusoidal modulation amplitude increases from 0.7 % at 1 keV to approximately 2 % at 6 keV. Similar oscillations were also detected at lower significance in three additional dwells. …
Calvera (1RXS J141256.0+792204) is an isolated neutron star detected only through its thermal X-ray emission. Its location at high Galactic latitude ($b=+37^\circ$) is unusual if Calvera is a relatively young pulsar, as suggested by its spin period (59 ms) and period derivative ($3.2 \times 10^{-15}$ Hz s$^{-1}$). Using the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), we obtained a phase-connected timing solution spanning four years which allowed us to measure the second derivative of the frequency $\ddotν= -2.5 \times 10^{-23}$ Hz s$^{-2}$ and to reveal timing noise consistent with tha…

We present the earliest available soft X-ray observations of XTE J1810-187, the prototypical transient magnetar, obtained 75--84 days after its 2018 outburst with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Using a series of observations covering eight days we find that its decreasing X-ray flux is well-described by either a blackbody plus power-law or a two-blackbody spectral model. The 2-10 keV flux of the source varied from (1.206+/-0.007)x10^{-10} to (1.125+/-0.004)x10^{-10} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}, a decrease of about 7% within our observations and 44% from that measured 7-14 days …

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on the International Space Station (ISS) observed strong photospheric expansion of the neutron star in 4U 1820-30 during a Type I X-ray burst. A thermonuclear helium flash in the star's envelope powered a burst that reached the Eddington limit. Radiation pressure pushed the photosphere out to ~200 km, while the blackbody temperature dropped to 0.45 keV. Previous observations of similar bursts were performed with instruments that are sensitive only above 3 keV, and the burst signal was weak at low temperatures. NICER's 0.2-12 keV passband e…
