In the past decades, tremendous efforts have been made towards understanding the exotic physics emerging from competition between various ordering tendencies in strongly correlated systems. Employing state-of-the-art quantum Monte-Carlo simulation, we investigate an interacting SU($N$) fermionic model with varying interaction strength and value of $N$, and unveil the ground-state phase diagram of the model exhibiting a plethora of exotic phases. For small value of $N$, namely $N=2,3$, the ground state is antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase, whereas in the large-$N$ limit, valence bound solid (VBS) order is dominant. For the intermediate value of $N$ such as $N=4$, remarkably, our study reveals distinct VBS orders appear in the weak and strong coupling regimes. More fantastically, the competition between staggered and columnar VBS ordering tendencies gives rise to a Mott insulating phase without spontaneously symmetry breaking (SSB), existing in a large interacting parameter regime, which is consistent with a gapped quantum spin liquid. Our study not only provides a platform to investigate the fundamental physics of quantum many-body systems, but also offers a novel route towards searching for exotic states of matter such as quantum spin liquid in realistic quantum materials.
Linear spin wave theory shows that ring exchange induces a quantum disordered region in the phase diagram of the title model. Spin wave spectra show that this is a direct manifestation of competing classical orders. A spin liquid is found in the `Goldilocks zone' of frustration, where the quantum fluctuations are large enough to cause strong competition between different classical orderings but not strong enough to stabilize spiral order. We note that the spin liquid phases of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)${_2}X$ and $Y$[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ are found in this Goldilocks zone.
Ultrafast perturbations offer a unique tool to manipulate correlated systems due to their ability to promote transient behaviors with no equilibrium counterpart. A widely employed strategy is the excitation of coherent optical phonons, as they can cause significant changes in the electronic structure and interactions on short time scales. Here, we explore a promising alternative route: the non-equilibrium excitation of acoustic phonons. We demonstrate that it leads to the remarkable phenomenon of a momentum-dependent temperature, by which electronic states at different regions of the Fermi sur…
We study the properties of a class of two-dimensional interacting critical states -- dubbed algebraic spin liquids -- that can arise in two-dimensional quantum magnets. A particular example that we focus on is the staggered flux spin liquid, which plays a key role in some theories of underdoped cuprate superconductors. We show that the low-energy theory of such states has much higher symmetry than the underlying microscopic spin system. This symmetry has remarkable consequences, leading in particular to the unification of a number of seemingly unrelated competing orders. The correlations of th…
Understanding many-electron phenomena with competing near-degenerate electronic states is of fundamental importance to chemistry and condensed matter physics. One of the most significant challenges for exploring such many-electron phenomena is the necessity for large system sizes in order to realize competing states, far beyond those practical for first-principles methods. Here, we show how allowing non-integer nuclear charges expands the space of computationally tractable electron systems that host competing electronic states. The emergence of competing electronic states from non-integer nucl…
We correct an error in our paper Phys. Rev. B 72, 104404 (2005) [cond-mat/0502215]. We show that a particular fermion bilinear is not related to the other ``competing orders'' of the algebraic spin liquid, and does not possess their slowly decaying correlations. For the square lattice staggered flux spin liquid (equivalently, d-wave RVB state), this observable corresponds to the uniform spin chirality.
In this paper, we demonstrate that in frustrated magnets when several conventional (i.e., symmetry-breaking) orders compete, and are "intertwined" by a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term, the possibility of spin liquid arises. The resulting spin liquid could have excitations which carry fractional spins and obey non-trivial self/mutual statistics. As a concrete example, we consider the case where the competing orders are the Néel and valence-bond solid (VBS) order on square lattice. Examining different scenarios of vortex condensation from the VBS side, we show that the intermediate phases, includi…
We consider the problem of two coupled Luttinger liquids both at half filling and at low doping levels, to investigate the problem of competing orders in quasi-one-dimensional strongly correlated systems. We use bosonization and renormalization group equations to investigate the phase diagrams, to determine the allowed phases and to establish approximate boundaries among them. Because of the chiral translation and reflection symmetry in the charge mode away from half filling, orders of charge density wave (CDW) and spin-Peierls (SP) diagonal current (DC) and $d$-density wave (DDW) form two dou…
An accurate numerical consideration of 1D spinless fermion model with next-nearest neighbour (NNN) interactions is carried out for the electron concentrations 4/7. It is shown that depending on the parameters of the model it can be either Luttinger liquid or bipolaron liquid. In the former case competing interactions can result in a smooth behavior of one-electron distribution function at the Fermi surface with a divergence in the second derivative with respect to the quasimomentum (and not in the first one, as usual). In this connection, uncommon photoemission spectra for some 1D conductors c…
FeGa$_3$ is an unusual intermetallic semiconductor that presents intriguing magnetic responses to the tuning of its electronic properties. When doped with Ge, the system evolves from diamagnetic to paramagnetic to ferromagnetic ground states that are not well understood. In this work, we have performed a joint theoretical and experimental study of FeGa$_{3-x}$Ge$_x$ using Density Functional Theory and magnetic susceptibility measurements. For low Ge concentrations we observe the formation of localized moments on some Fe atoms and, as the dopant concentration increases, a more delocalized magne…
We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically com…
The static and dynamic local spin susceptibility of the organic Mott insulator $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, a model material of the spin- 1/2 triangular lattice, is studied by $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy from room temperature down to 20 mK. We observe an anomalous field-dependent spectral broadening with the continuous and bipolar shift distribution, appearing without the critical spin fluctuations. It is attributable to spatially nonuniform magnetizations induced in the spin liquid under magnetic fields. The amplitude of the magnetization levels off below 1 K, while the low-lying spin fluctuatio…
We provide strong numerical evidence, using improved variational wave functions, for a ground state with vanishing spin gap in the spin-$1/2$ quantum Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. Starting from the algebraic $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid state proposed by Y. Ran $et al.$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. $98$, $117205$ ($2007$)] and iteratively applying a few Lanczos steps, we compute the lowest $S=2$ excitation constructed by exciting spinons close to the Dirac nodes. Our results are compatible with a vanishing spin gap in the thermodynamic limit and in consonance with a power-law decay of long distance…
We study the quantum phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice with first-, second-, and third-neighbor interactions $J_1$, $J_2$, and $J_3$ by means of density matrix renormalization group. For small $J_2$ and $J_3$, this model sustains a time-reversal invariant quantum spin liquid phase. With increasing $J_2$ and $J_3$, we find in addition a $q=(0,0)$ Néel phase, a chiral spin liquid phase, a valence-bond crystal phase, and a complex non-coplanar magnetically ordered state with spins forming the vertices of a cuboctahedron known as a cuboc1 phase. Both the chiral…
The properties of ground state of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (KAFH) model have attracted considerable interest in the past few decades, and recent numerical simulations reported a spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid phase remains unclear. For instance, the interplay between symmetries and $Z_2$ topological order leads to different types of $Z_2$ spin liquid phases. In this paper, we develop a numerical simulation method based on symmetric projected entangled-pair states (PEPS), which is generally applicable to strongly correlated model systems in two sp…
Frustration in magnetic interactions can give rise to disordered ground states with subtle and beautiful properties. The spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 exemplify this phenomenon, displaying a classical spin liquid state, with fractionalized magnetic--monopole excitations. Recently there has been great interest in closely-related "quantum spin ice" materials, following the realization that anisotropic exchange interactions could convert spin ice into a massively-entangled, quantum, spin liquid, where magnetic monopoles become the charges of an emergent quantum electrodynamics. Here we show tha…
Starting from the mean-field solution of a spin-orbital model of LiNiO$_2$, we derive an effective quantum dimer model (QDM) that lives on the triangular lattice and contains kinetic terms acting on 4-site plaquettes and 6-site loops. Using numerical exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the competition between these kinetic terms leads to a resonating valence bond (RVB) state for a finite range of parameters. We also show that this RVB phase is connected to the RVB phase identified in the Rokhsar-Kivelson model on the same lattice in the context of …
We investigate various competing paramagnetic ground states of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two dimensional star lattice which exhibits geometric frustration. Using slave particle mean field theory combined with a projective symmetry group analysis, we examine a variety of candidate spin liquid states on this lattice, including chiral spin liquids, spin liquids with Fermi surfaces of spinons, and nematic spin liquids which break lattice rotational symmetry. Motivated by connection to large-N SU(N) theory as well as numerical exact diagonalization studies, we also examine various valen…
We identify ground states of one-dimensional fermionic systems subject to competing repulsive interactions of finite range, and provide phenomenological and fundamental signatures of these phases and their transitions. Commensurable particle densities admit multiple competing charge-ordered insulating states with various periodicities and internal structure. Our reference point are systems with interaction range $p=2$, where phase transitions between these charge-ordered configurations are known to be mediated by liquid and bond-ordered phases. For increased interaction range $p=4$, we find th…
The pyrochlore materials have long been predicted to harbor a quantum spin liquid, an intrinsic long-range-entangled state supporting fractionalized excitations. Existing pyrochlore experiments, on the other hand, have discovered several weakly ordered states and a tendency of close competition amongst them. Motivated by these facts, we give a complete classification of spin-orbit-coupled $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin-liquid states on the pyrochlore lattice by using the projective symmetry group (PSG) approach for bosonic spinons. For each spin liquid, we construct a mean-field Hamiltonian that can be u…
Recent experiments on the dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore compound Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ indicate that it may realize a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid (QSL). In particular, the analyses of available data suggest that the system is in a region of parameter space, where the so-called $π$-flux $U(1)$ octupolar quantum spin ice (QSI) with an emergent photon could be realized. On the other hand, because the system is far from the perturbative classical spin ice regime, it is unclear whether the quantum ground state is primarily a coherent superposition of 2-in-2-out configurations as in the canonic…
The classical Ising model on the frustrated 3d swedenborgite lattice has disordered spin liquid ground states for all ratios of inter- and intra-planar couplings. Quantum fluctuations due to a transverse field give rise to several exotic quantum phenomena. In the limit of weakly coupled Kagomé layers we find a 3d version of disorder by disorder. For large out-of-plane couplings 1d macro-spins are formed which realize a disordered macro-spin liquid on an emerging triangular lattice. Signatures of this dimensional reduction are also found in critical exponents of the quantum phase transition out…
SU($N$) Mott insulators have been proposed and/or realized in solid-state materials and with ultracold atoms on optical lattices. We study the two-dimensional SU($N$) antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Starting from an SU($N$) Heisenberg model with the fundamental representation on each site in the large-$N$ limit, we perform a self-consistent calculation and find a variety of ground states including the valence cluster states, stripe ordered states with a doubled unit-cell and topological chiral spin liquids. The system favors a cluster or ordered ground state when the number of flav…
We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the antiferromagnetic first ($J_1$) and second ($J_2$) nearest-neighbor interactions using density matrix renormalization group. By studying the spin correlation function, we find a $120^{\circ}$ magnetic order phase for $J_2 \lesssim 0.07 J_1$ and a stripe antiferromagnetic phase for $J_2 \gtrsim 0.15 J_1$. Between these two phases, we identify a spin liquid region characterized by the exponential decaying spin and dimer correlations, as well as the large spin singlet and triplet excitation gaps on finite-size systems. We…
We explore the possibility of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like critical phase for the charge degrees of freedom in the intermediate-temperature regime between the charge-ordered and disordered phases in two-dimensional systems with competing short-range Coulomb repulsion. As the simplest example, we investigate the extended Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor Coulomb interactions on a triangular lattice at half filling in the atomic limit by using a classical Monte Carlo method, and find a critical phase, characterized by algebraic decay of the charge correlation function, be…
Competing pairing channels have been proposed in superfluid $^3$He, in the high temperature cuprate superconductors, and pnictide superconductors. While strong experimental support exists for this in superfluid $^3$He, the case for superconductors is weaker. Here, we show that $A15$ superconductors provide a compelling example for competing superconducting order. We present microscopic arguments that $A15$ superconductors have a competing d-wave order in addition to usual s-wave superconductivity and show that this d-wave order provides a unifying explanation for a series of diverse experiment…
Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are long-range entangled states of quantum magnets which lie beyond the Landau paradigm of classifying phases of matter via broken symmetries. A physical route to arriving at QSLs is via frustration-induced quantum melting of ordered states such as valence bond crystals or magnetic orders. Here, we show, using extensive exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of concrete $SU(2)$ invariant spin models on honeycomb, triangular and square lattices, that chiral spin liquids (CSLs) emerge as descendants of triple-$Q$ spin crysta…
We use the projective symmetry group analysis to classify the quantum spin liquids on the $S=1/2$ pyrochlore magnet with a breathing anisotropy. We find 40 $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids and 16 $U(1)$ spin liquids that respect the $F\bar{4}3m$ space group and the time reversal symmetry. As an application, we consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, which is proposed to be the dominant interaction in the candidate material Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$. Focusing on the $U(1)$ spin liquid ansatze, we find that only two of them are physical when restricted to this model. We present an analytica…
We report magnetometry data obtained on twin-free single crystals of Na3Co2SbO6, which is considered a candidate material for realizing the Kitaev honeycomb model for quantum spin liquids. Contrary to a common belief that such materials can be modeled with the symmetries of an ideal honeycomb lattice, our data reveal a pronounced two-fold symmetry and in-plane anisotropy of over 200%, despite the honeycomb layer's tiny orthorhombic distortion of less than 0.2%. We further use magnetic neutron diffraction to elucidate a rich variety of field-induced phases observed in the magnetometry. These ph…
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the physical properties of f^2-configuration systems with a crystalline-electric field (CEF) singlet ground state, which gives rise to a non- Fermi liquid (NFL) fixed point due to the competition between the Kondo-Yosida singlet and CEF singlet states. On the basis of the numerical renormalization group method, we find that the magnetic field breaks this NFL fixed point via two mechanisms: one causing the polarization of f-electrons and the other giving the "channel" anisotropy. These two mechanisms induce a difference in the magnetic field depen…
In the field of quantum magnetism, the exactly solvable Kitaev honeycomb model serves as a paradigm for the fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom and the formation of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids. An intense experimental search has led to the discovery of a number of spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators that realize its characteristic bond-directional interactions and, in the presence of magnetic fields, exhibit no indications of long-range order. Here, we map out the complete phase diagram of the Kitaev model in tilted magnetic fields and report the emergence of a distinct gaple…
Microscopic models for heavy-fermion materials often assume a local, i.e., momentum-independent, hybridization between the conduction band and the local-moment f electrons. Motivated by recent experiments, we consider situations where this neglect of momentum dependence is inappropriate, namely when the hybridization function has nodes in momentum space. We explore the thermodynamic and optical properties of the highly anisotropic heavy Fermi liquid, resulting from Kondo screening in a higher angular-momentum channel. The dichotomy in momentum space has interesting consequences: While e.g. the…
We report measurements of quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in the high-temperature superconductor (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in optimally doped, underdoped and undoped regimes. In the underdoped sample, spin-density wave (SDW) order forms at $\sim$85 K, followed by superconductivity at $\sim$ 28 K. We find the emergence of a normal-state order that suppresses SDW at a temperature $T^{\ast} \sim$ 60 K and argue that this normal-state order is a precursor to superconductivity.
In the absence of disorder, electrons can display glassy behavior through supercooling the liquid state, avoiding the solidification into a charge ordered state. Such supercooled electron liquids are experimentally found in organic $θ$-$MM'$ compounds. We present theoretical results that qualitatively capture the experimental findings. At intermediate temperatures, the conducting state crosses over into a weakly insulating pseudogap phase. The stripe order phase transition is first order, so that the liquid phase is metastable below $T_s$. In the supercooled liquid phase the resistivity increa…
Quantum magnets on kagome lattice geometries in two and three spatial dimensions are archetypal examples of spin systems in which geometric frustration inhibits conventional magnetic ordering and instead benefits the emergence of long-range entangled spin liquids at low temperature. Here we employ a recently developed pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) approach to study the low-temperature quantum magnetism of kagome and hyperkagome spin systems with exchange interactions beyond the nearest neighbor coupling. We find that next-nearest neighbor couplings stabilize a variet…
We investigate the effects of compressive strain on the electrical resistivity of 5d iridium based perovskite SrIrO3 by depositing epitaxial films of thickness 35 nm on various substrates such as GdScO3 (110), DyScO3 (110), and SrTiO3 (001). Surprisingly, we find anomalous transport behaviors in the tempeature dependent resistivity, where the temperature exponent evolves continuously from 4/5 to 1 and to 3/2 with an increase of compressive strain. Furthermore, magnetoresistance always remains positive irrespective of resistivity upturns at low temperatures. These observations imply that the de…
Spirals and helices are common motifs of long-range order in magnetic solids, and they may also be organized into more complex emergent structures such as magnetic skyrmions and vortices. A new type of spiral state, the spiral spin-liquid, in which spins fluctuate collectively as spirals, has recently been predicted to exist. Here, using neutron scattering techniques, we experimentally prove the existence of a spiral spin-liquid in MnSc$_2$S$_4$ by directly observing the 'spiral surface' - a continuous surface of spiral propagation vectors in reciprocal space. We elucidate the multi-step order…
We calculate the low temperature one-particle scattering rate and the specific heat in a weakly disordered metal close to a quantum critical point. To lowest order in the fluctuation potential, we obtain typical Fermi-liquid results proportional to T^2 and T respectively, with prefactors which diverge as a power law of the control parameter upon approaching the critical point. The Kadowaki-Woods ratio is shown to be independent of the control parameter only for the case of 3-D FM fluctuations. Our work is relevant for experiments on CeCoIn$_5$ and Sr_3Ru_2O_7.
In this study, we reanalyze the magnetic interactions in the Kitaev spin liquid candidate materials Na$_2$IrO$_3$, $α$-RuCl$_3$, and $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ using nonperturbative exact diagonalization methods. These methods are more appropriate given the relatively itinerant nature of the systems suggested in previous works. We treat all interactions up to third neighbours on equal footing. The computed terms reveal significant long range coupling, bond-anisotropy, and/or off-diagonal couplings which we argue naturally explain the observed ordered phases in these systems. Given these observations, t…
The competing magnetic ground states of the itinerant magnet EuCuSb, which has a hexagonal layered structure, were studied via magnetization, resistivity, and neutron diffraction measurements on single-crystal samples. EuCuSb has a three-dimensional semimetallic band structure as confirmed by band calculation and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, consistent with the nearly isotropic metallic conductivity in the paramagnetic state. However, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN1 (8.5 K), the resistivity, especially along the hexagonal axis, increases significantly. T…
Recent experiments on quantum degenerate gases give an opportunity for simulating strongly-correlated electronic systems in optical lattices. It may shed light on some long-standing puzzles in condensed-matter physics, like the nature of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates that had baffled people over two decades. It is believed that the two-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model, or t-J model, contains the key to this problem; but the difficulty of unveiling the mystery of a strongly-interacting fermionic system is also generally acknowledged. Here, as a substitute, we systematically …
There has been a great interest in magnetic field induced quantum spin liquids in Kitaev magnets after the discovery of neutron scattering continuum and half quantized thermal Hall conductivity in the material $α$-RuCl$_3$. In this work, we provide a semiclassical analysis of the relevant theoretical models on large system sizes, and compare the results to previous studies on quantum models with small system sizes. We find a series of competing magnetic orders with fairly large unit cells at intermediate magnetic fields, which are most likely missed by previous approaches. We show that quantum…
We discuss quantum phase transition by an exactly solvable model in the dual gravity setup. By considering the effect of the scalar condensation on the fermion spectrum near the quantum critical point(QCP), we find that there is a topologically protected fermion zero mode associated with the metal to insulator transition. We also show that the strange metal phase with T-linear resistivity emerges at high enough temperature as far as the gravity has a horizon. The phase boundaries are calculated according to the density of states, giving insights on structures of the phase diagram near the QCP.
Resorting to a recently developed theoretical device called dimensional regularization for quantum criticality with a Fermi surface, we examine a metal-insulator quantum phase transition from a Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a U(1) spin-liquid phase with a spinon Fermi surface in two dimensions. Unfortunately, we fail to approach the spin-liquid Mott quantum critical point from the U(1) spin-liquid state within the dimensional regularization technique. Self-interactions between charge fluctuations called holons are not screened, which shows a run-away renormalization group flow, interpreted as…
We provide strong evidence of a quantum critical point (QCP) associated with the destruction of Kondo screening in the Anderson-Hubbard model for interacting electrons with quenched disorder. A unique crossover energy scale, $ω^*$ separating the Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid (nFL) scattering dynamics on the metallic side of the quantum critical fan is identified. The scale vanishes at the disorder driven QCP. We interpret our results by measuring the distribution of Kondo scales and find that the QCP occurs when this distribution acquires a finite intercept, indicating a Kondo destruction …
Non-equilibrium charge dynamics, such as cooling-rate-dependent charge vitrification and physical aging, have been demonstrated for a charge-cluster glass in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CsZn(SCN)$_4$ using electron transport measurements. The temperature evolution of the relaxation time obeys the Arrhenius law, indicating that the glass-forming charge liquid can be classified as a "`strong" liquid in the scheme of canonical structural-glass formers. X-ray diffuse scattering further reveals that the spatial growth of charge clusters in the charge liquid is frozen below the glass transition temperature, i…
The light-cone spreading of entanglement and correlation is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of homogeneous extended quantum systems. Here we point out that a class of inhomogenous Luttinger liquids (those with a uniform Luttinger parameter $K$) at low energy display the universal phenomenon of curved light cones: gapless excitations propagate along the geodesics of the metric $ds^2=dx^2+v(x)^2 dτ^2$, with $v(x)$ being the calculable spatial dependent velocity induced by the inhomogeneity. We confirm our findings with explicit analytic and numerical calculations both in- and out-of-equilib…
Twisting moiré heterostructures to the flatband regime allows for the formation of strongly correlated quantum states, since the dramatic reduction of the bandwidth can cause the residual electronic interactions to set the principal energy scale. An effective description for such correlated moiré heterostructures, derived in the strong-coupling limit at integer filling, generically leads to spin-valley Heisenberg models. Here we explore the emergence and stability of spin liquid behavior in an SU(2)$^{\mathrm{spin}}\otimes$SU(2)$^{\mathrm{valley}}$ Heisenberg model upon inclusion of Hund's-ind…
The Kitaev model is a rare example of an analytically solvable and physically instantiable Hamiltonian yielding a topological quantum spin liquid ground state. Here we report signatures of Kitaev spin liquid physics in the honeycomb magnet $Li_3Co_2SbO_6$, built of high-spin $\it{d^7}$ ($Co^{2+}$) ions, in contrast to the more typical low-spin $\it{d^5}$ electron configurations in the presence of large spin-orbit coupling. Neutron powder diffraction measurements, heat capacity, and magnetization studies support the development of a long-range antiferromagnetic order space group of $\it{C_C}2/\…
Based on the Chern-Simons fermionization of spin-1/2 operators, we propose a systematic framework to investigate the competition between emergent phases in frustrated two-dimensional XY quantum magnets. Application of the method to the antiferromagnetic honeycomb spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ XY model reveals an unconventional phase transition between two Chern-Simons orders: the Chern-Simons superconductor and the exciton insulator of Chern-Simons fermions. We show that in the spin language, this transition translates to the transition from the planar Néel state to the non-uniform chiral spin-liquid t…
Superconductivity in underdoped cuprates emerges from an unusual electronic state characterised by nodal quasiparticles and an antinodal pseudogap. The relation between this state and superconductivity is intensely studied but remains controversial. The discrimination between competing theoretical models is hindered by a lack of electronic structure data from related doped Mott insulators. Here we report the doping evolution of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, a close analogue to underdoped cuprates. We demonstrate that metallicity emerges from a rapid collapse of the Mott gap wit…
The occurrence of high-T_c superconductivity in systems including the cuprates and the iron-based superconductors, is known to coincide with the existence of anomalous normal-state properties which have been associated with quantum criticality. We argue here that this observation results from the fact that quantum criticality can allow the occurrence of very-strong-coupling superconductivity by preventing its suppression due to competing symmetry-breaking instabilities. Treating the electrons through a large-U ansatz yields their separation into boson quasiparticles which are directly involved…
We consider the planar local patch approximation of $d=2$ fermions at finite density coupled to a critical boson. In the quenched or Bloch-Nordsieck approximation, where one takes the limit of fermion flavors $N_f\rightarrow 0$, the fermion spectral function can be determined {exactly}. We show that one can obtain this non-perturbative answer thanks to a specific identity of fermionic two-point functions in the planar local patch approximation. The resulting spectrum is that of a non-Fermi liquid: quasiparticles are not part of the exact fermionic excitation spectrum of the theory. Instead one…
