We present early science results from Deep Investigation of Neutral Gas Origins (DINGO), an HI survey using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Using ASKAP sub-arrays available during its commissioning phase, DINGO early science data were taken over $\sim$ 60 deg$^{2}$ of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) 23 h region with 35.5 hr integration time. We make direct detections of six known and one new sources at $z < 0.01$. Using HI spectral stacking, we investigate the HI gas content of galaxies at $0.04 < z< 0.09$ for different galaxy colours. The results show that galaxy morphology based on optical colour is strongly linked to HI gas properties. To examine environmental impacts on the HI gas content of galaxies, three sub-samples are made based on the GAMA group catalogue. The average HI mass of group central galaxies is larger than those of satellite and isolated galaxies, but with a lower HI gas fraction. We derive a variety of HI scaling relations for physical properties of our sample, including stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, $NUV-r$ colour, specific star formation rate, and halo mass. We find that the derived HI scaling relations are comparable to other published results, with consistent trends also observed to $\sim$0.5 dex lower limits in stellar mass and stellar surface density. The cosmic HI densities derived from our data are consistent with other published values at similar redshifts. DINGO early science highlights the power of HI spectral stacking techniques with ASKAP.
We use the 21 cm emission line data from the DINGO-VLA project to study the atomic hydrogen gas H\,{\textsc i} of the Universe at redshifts $z<0.1$. Results are obtained using a stacking analysis, combining the H\,{\textsc i} signals from 3622 galaxies extracted from 267 VLA pointings in the G09 field of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly Survey (GAMA). Rather than using a traditional one-dimensional spectral stacking method, a three-dimensional cubelet stacking method is used to enable deconvolution and the accurate recovery of average galaxy fluxes from this high-resolution interferometric dataset…
In this paper we introduce a method for stacking data cubelets extracted from interferometric surveys of galaxies in the redshifted 21-cm H\,\textsc{i} line. Unlike the traditional spectral stacking technique, which stacks one-dimensional spectra extracted from data cubes, we examine a method based on image domain stacks which makes deconvolution possible. To test the validity of this assumption, we mock a sample of 3622 equatorial galaxies extracted from the GAMA survey, recently imaged as part of a DINGO-VLA project. We first examine the accuracy of the method using a noise-free simulation a…

We present an analytic model to predict the HI mass contributed by confused sources to a stacked spectrum in a generic HI survey. Based on the ALFALFA correlation function, this model is in agreement with the estimates of confusion present in stacked Parkes telescope data, and was used to predict how confusion will limit stacking in the deepest SKA-precursor HI surveys. Stacking with LADUMA and DINGO UDEEP data will only be mildly impacted by confusion if their target synthesised beam size of 10 arcsec can be achieved. Any beam size significantly above this will result in stacks that contain a…

We measure how the atomic gas (HI) fraction ($f_{HI}={\rm \frac{M_{HI}}{M_{*}}}$) of groups and pairs taken as single units vary with average stellar mass ($\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$) and average star-formation rate ($\langle {\rm SFR} \rangle$), compared to isolated galaxies. The HI 21 cm emission observation are from (i) archival ALFALFA survey data covering three fields from the GAMA survey (provides environmental and galaxy properties), and (ii) DINGO pilot survey data of one of those fields. The mean $f_{HI}$ for different units (groups/pairs/isolated galaxies) are measured in regions of…
Much of our current understanding of neutral, atomic gas in galaxies comes from radio observations of the nearby Universe. Until the next generation of instruments allow us to push to much higher redshifts, we must rely mostly upon theoretical models of galaxy formation to provide us with key insights into the likely cosmic evolution of HI in the Universe, and its links to molecular clouds and star formation. In this work, we present a new set of methods to convert mock galaxy catalogues into synthetic data cubes containing model galaxies with realistic spatial and spectral HI distributions ov…
Outflows form an integral component in regulating the gas cycling in and out of galaxies, although their impact on the galaxy hosts is still poorly understood. Here we present an analysis of 405 high mass (log M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}\geqslant10$), star-forming galaxies (excluding AGN) with low inclinations at $z\sim$0, using stacking techniques of the NaD $λλ$5889,5895 A neutral gas tracer in IFU observations from the MaNGA DR15 survey. We detect outflows in the central regions of 78/405 galaxies and determine their extent and power through the construction of stacked annuli. We find outflows are m…
Using a spectral stacking technique, we measure the neutral hydrogen (HI) properties of a sample of galaxies at $z < 0.11$ across 35 pointings of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). The radio data contains 1,895 galaxies with redshifts and positions known from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We carefully quantified the effects of sample bias, aperture used to extract spectra, sidelobes and weighting technique and use our data to provide a new estimate for the cosmic HI mass density. We find a cosmic HI mass density of $Ω_{\rm HI} = (4.02 \pm 0.26)\times 10^{-4} h_{70}^{-1}$ a…
We study the atomic neutral hydrogen (HI) content of $\sim$1600 galaxies up to $z \sim 0.1$ using stacking techniques. The observations were carried out with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) in the area of the SDSS South Galactic Cap (SSGC), where we selected a galaxy sample from the SDSS spectroscopic catalog. Multi-wavelength information is provided by SDSS, NVSS, GALEX, and WISE. We use the collected information to study HI trends with color, star-forming, and active galactic nuclei (AGN) properties. Using NUV-r colors, galaxies are divided into blue cloud, green valley and r…
We use observations made with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to probe the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas content of field galaxies in the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) 14h field at $z \approx 0.32$. Because the HI emission from individual galaxies is too faint to detect at this redshift, we use an HI spectral stacking technique using the known optical positions and redshifts of the 165 galaxies in our sample to co-add their HI spectra and thus obtain the average HI mass of the galaxies. Stacked HI measurements of 165 galaxies show that 95 per cent of the neutral gas is found in blue, sta…
We analyse the properties of circumgalactic gas around simulated galaxies in the redshift range z >= 3, utilising a new sample of cosmological zoom simulations. These simulations are intended to be representative of the observed samples of Lyman-alpha emitters recently obtained with the MUSE instrument (halo masses ~10^10-10^11 solar masses). We show that supernova feedback has a significant impact on both the inflowing and outflowing circumgalactic medium by driving outflows, reducing diffuse inflow rates, and by increasing the neutral fraction of inflowing gas. By temporally stacking simulat…
We present the results of HI spectral stacking analysis of Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations targeting the COSMOS field. The GMRT data cube contains 474 field galaxies with redshifts known from the zCOSMOS-bright 10k catalogue. Spectra for the galaxies are co-added and the stacked spectrum allows us to make a $\sim 3σ$ measurement of the average HI mass. Using this average HI mass along with the integral optical $B$-band luminosity of the galaxies and the luminosity density of the COSMOS field, a volume normalisation is applied to obtain the cosmic HI mass density ($Ω_{\rm HI…
We have used the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to carry out deep 610 MHz continuum imaging of four sub-fields of the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. We stacked the radio emission in the GMRT images from a near-complete (absolute blue magnitude ${\rm M_B} \leq -21$) sample of 3698 blue star-forming galaxies with redshifts $0.7 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.45$ to detect (at $\approx 17σ$ significance) the median rest-frame 1.4 GHz radio continuum emission of the sample galaxies. The stacked emission is unresolved, with a rest-frame 1.4 GHz luminosity of $\rm L_{1.4 \; GHz} = (4.13 \pm 0.24) \tim…

CIZA J2242.8+5301 ($z = 0.188$, nicknamed 'Sausage') is an extremely massive ($M_{200}\sim 2.0 \times 10^{15}M_\odot$ ), merging cluster with shock waves towards its outskirts, which was found to host numerous emission-line galaxies. We performed extremely deep Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope HI observations of the 'Sausage' cluster to investigate the effect of the merger and the shocks on the gas reservoirs fuelling present and future star formation (SF) in cluster members. By using spectral stacking, we find that the emission-line galaxies in the 'Sausage' cluster have, on average, as m…
We present new HI data of the dwarf galaxy KK 69, obtained with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) with a signal-to-noise ratio that almost double previous observations. We carried out a Gaussian spectral decomposition and stacking methods to identify the cold neutral medium (CNM) and the warm neutral medium (WNM) of the HI gas. We found that 30% of the total HI gas, which corresponds to a mass of approx. 10^7 Mo, is in the CNM phase. The distribution of the HI in KK 69 is not symmetric. Our GMRT HI intensity map of KK 69 overlaid onto a Hubble Space Telescope image reveals an offset o…

Mass outflow rates and loading factors are typically used to infer the quenching potential of galactic-scale outflows. However, these generally rely on observations of a single gas phase which can severely underestimate the total ejected gas mass. To address this, we use observations of high mass ($\geqslant$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$), normal star-forming galaxies at $z\sim$0 from the MaNGA, xCOLD GASS, xGASS and ALFALFA surveys and a stacking of NaD, H$α$, CO(1-0) and HI 21cm tracers with the aim of placing constraints on an average, total mass outflow rate and loading factor. We find detections …
Voids represent a unique environment for the study of galaxy evolution, as the lower density environment is expected to result in shorter merger histories and slower evolution of galaxies. This provides an ideal opportunity to test theories of galaxy formation and evolution. Imaging of the neutral hydrogen, central in both driving and regulating star formation, directly traces the gas reservoir and can reveal interactions and signs of cold gas accretion. For a new Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), we have carefully selected a sample of 59 galaxies that reside in the deepest underdensities of geometric…
We study cool neutral gas traced by NaD absorption in 140 local ($\rm z<0.1)$ early-type ``red geyser'' galaxies. These galaxies show unique signatures in spatially-resolved strong-line emission maps that have been interpreted as large-scale active galactic nuclei driven ionized winds. To investigate the possible fuel source for these winds, we examine the abundance and kinematics of cool gas ($\rm T \sim 100-1000 K$) inferred from Na I D absorption in red geysers and matched control samples drawn from SDSS-IV MaNGA. We find that red geysers host greater amounts of NaD-associated material. Sub…
The Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) are a selection of well-studied galaxy clusters used to probe dense environments and distant gravitationally lensed galaxies. We explore the 21cm neutral hydrogen (HI) content of galaxies in three of the HFF clusters, Abell 2744 ($z = 0.308$), Abell S1063 ($z = 0.346$) and Abell 370 ($z = 0.375$), to investigate the evolution of gas in galaxies within intermediate redshift clusters. Using Early Science MeerKAT observations, we perform spectral-line stacking with HI cubes and make a 3$σ$ stacked detection for blue galaxies in Abell S1063 ($M_\mathrm{HI} = 1.22^{…
We perform a stacking analysis of the neutral \nad\,$λλ$5889,5895\,Å ISM doublet using the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic data set to probe the prevalence and characteristics of cold (T\,$\lesssim$\,10$^{4}$\,K) galactic-scale gas flows in local (0.025$\leqslant z\leqslant$0.1) inactive and AGN-host galaxies across the SFR-M$_{*}$ plane. We find low-velocity outflows to be prevalent in regions of high SFRs and stellar masses (10 $\lesssim$log M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$ $\lesssim$ 11.5), however we do not find any detections in the low mass (log M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$ $\lesssim$ 10) regime. We also find tentativ…
We apply a spectral stacking technique to Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations to measure the neutral atomic hydrogen content (HI) of nearby galaxies in and around galaxy groups at $z < 0.11$. Our sample includes 577 optically-selected galaxies (120 isolated galaxies and 457 satellites) covering stellar masses between 10$^{10}$ and 10$^{11.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, cross-matched with Yang's group catalogue, with angular and redshift positions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the satellites in the centres of groups have lower HI masses at fixed stellar mass and morphology (ch…

We report a Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for HI 21cm emission from a large sample of star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 1.18 - 1.34$, lying in sub-fields of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. The search was carried out by co-adding ("stacking") the HI 21cm emission spectra of 857 galaxies, after shifting each galaxy's HI 21cm spectrum to its rest frame. We obtain the $3σ$ upper limit S$_{\rm{HI}} < 2.5 μ$Jy on the average HI 21cm flux density of the 857 galaxies, at a velocity resolution of $\approx 315$ km s$^{-1}$. This yields the $3σ$ constraint M$_{\rm{HI}} < 2.1 \times 10^{10} \…
We present a study of ~100 high redshift (z~2-4) extremely strong damped Lyman-alpha systems (ESDLA, with N(HI)>0.5x10^22 cm^-2) detected in quasar spectra from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey SDSS-III DR11. We study the neutral hydrogen, metal, and dust content of this elusive population of absorbers and confirm our previous finding that the high column density end of the N(HI) frequency distribution has a relatively shallow slope with power-law index -3.6, similar to what is seen from 21-cm maps in nearby galaxies. The stacked absorption spectrum indicates a typical metallicity ~…
We present results from our analysis of the Hydra I cluster observed in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) as part of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). These WALLABY observations cover a 60-square-degree field of view with uniform sensitivity and a spatial resolution of 30 arcsec. We use these wide-field observations to investigate the effect of galaxy environment on HI gas removal and star formation quenching by comparing the properties of cluster, infall and field galaxies extending up to $\sim5R_{200}$ from the cluster centre. We find a sharp decrease in the HI-det…
We investigate the CO excitation and interstellar medium (ISM) conditions in a cold gas mass-selected sample of 22 star-forming galaxies at $z=0.46-3.60$, observed as part of the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). Combined with VLA follow-up observations, we detect a total of 34 CO $J \rightarrow J-1$ transitions with $J=1$ up to $8$ (and an additional 21 upper limits, up to $J=10$) and six [C I] ${^3P}_1 \rightarrow {^3P}_0$ and ${^3P}_2 \rightarrow {^3P}_1$ transitions (and 12 upper limits). The CO(2-1) and CO(3-2)-selected galaxies, at $z=1.2$ and $2.5$, resp…
The baryonic processes in galaxy evolution include gas infall onto galaxies to form neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), the conversion of HI to the molecular state (H$_2$), and, finally, the conversion of H$_2$ to stars. Understanding galaxy evolution thus requires understanding the evolution of both the stars, and the neutral atomic and molecular gas, the primary fuel for star-formation, in galaxies. For the stars, the cosmic star-formation rate density is known to peak in the redshift range $z \approx 1-3$, and to decline by an order of magnitude over the next $\approx 10$ billion years; the cause…

We present the neutral hydrogen mass ($M_{\text{HI}}$) function (HIMF) and velocity width ($w_{50}$) function (HIWF) based on a sample of 7857 galaxies from the 40% data release of the ALFALFA survey ($α.40$). The low mass (velocity width) end of the HIMF (HIWF) is dominated by the blue population of galaxies whereas the red population dominates the HIMF (HIWF) at the high mass (velocity width) end. We use a deconvolution method to estimate the HI rotational velocity ($V_{\text{rot}}$) functions (HIVF) from the HIWF for the total, red, and blue samples. The HIWF and HIVF for the red and blue s…
We have used the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope to carry out a deep (117 on-source hours) L-band observation of the Extended Groth Strip, to measure the average neutral hydrogen (HI) mass and median star formation rate (SFR) of star-forming galaxies, as well as the cosmic HI mass density, at $0.2 < z < 0.4$. This was done by stacking the HI 21cm emission and the rest-frame 1.4 GHz radio continuum from 445 blue star-forming galaxies with $\rm M_B \leq -17$ at $z_{\rm mean} \approx 0.34$. The stacked HI 21cm emission signal is detected at $\approx 7σ$ significance, implying an average …
The neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) mass function (HIMF) describes the distribution of the HI content of galaxies at any epoch; its evolution provides an important probe of models of galaxy formation and evolution. Here, we report Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope HI 21cm spectroscopy of blue star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.20-0.42$ in the Extended Groth Strip, which has allowed us to determine the scaling relation between the average HI mass ($\rm{M_{HI}}$) and the absolute B-band magnitude ($\rm{M_B}$) of such galaxies at $z \approx 0.35$, by stacking the HI 21cm emission signals of galaxy su…
