We measure how the atomic gas (HI) fraction ($f_{HI}={\rm \frac{M_{HI}}{M_{*}}}$) of groups and pairs taken as single units vary with average stellar mass ($\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$) and average star-formation rate ($\langle {\rm SFR} \rangle$), compared to isolated galaxies. The HI 21 cm emission observation are from (i) archival ALFALFA survey data covering three fields from the GAMA survey (provides environmental and galaxy properties), and (ii) DINGO pilot survey data of one of those fields. The mean $f_{HI}$ for different units (groups/pairs/isolated galaxies) are measured in regions of the log($\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$) -- log($\langle {\rm SFR} \rangle$) plane, relative to the z $\sim 0$ star-forming main sequence (SFMS) of individual galaxies, by stacking $f_{HI}$ spectra of individual units. For ALFALFA, $f_{HI}$ spectra of units are measured by extracting HI spectra over the full groups/pair areas and dividing by the total stellar mass of member galaxies. For DINGO, $f_{HI}$ spectra of units are measured by co-adding HI spectra of individual member galaxies, followed by division by their total stellar mass. For all units the mean $f_{HI}$ decreases as we move to higher $\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$ along the SFMS, and as we move from above the SFMS to below it at any $\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$. From the DINGO-based study, mean $f_{HI}$ in groups appears to be lower compared to isolated galaxies for all $\langle {\rm M_*} \rangle$ along the SFMS. From the ALFALFA-based study we find substantially higher mean $f_{HI}$ in groups compared to isolated galaxies (values for pairs being intermediate) for ${\langle{\rm M_*}\rangle}\lesssim10^{9.5}~{\rm M_{\odot}}$, indicating the presence of substantial amounts of HI not associated with cataloged member galaxies in low mass groups.
We present the SALT spectroscopy of a globular cluster in the center of the nearby isolated dSph galaxy KKs3 situated at a distance of 2.12 Mpc. Its heliocentric radial velocity is 316+-7 km/s that corresponds to V_{LG} = 112 km/s in the Local Group (LG) reference frame. We use its distance and velocity along with the data on other 35 field galaxies in the proximity of the LG to trace the local Hubble flow. Some basic properties of the local field galaxies: their morphology, absolute magnitudes, average surface brightnesses, specific star formation rates, and hydrogen mass-to-stellar mass rati…
Satellites are not randomly distributed around their central galaxies but show polar and planar structures. In this paper, we investigate the axis-asymmetry or lopsidedness of satellite galaxy distributions around isolated galaxies in a hydrodynamic cosmological simulation. We find a statistically significant lopsided signal by studying the angular distribution of the satellite galaxies' projected positions around isolated central galaxies in a two-dimensional plane. The signal is dependent on galaxy mass, color and large-scale environment. Satellites that inhabit low-mass blue hosts, or locat…
We report the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy (NGC6503-d1) during the Subaru extended ultraviolet (XUV) disk survey. It is a likely companion of the spiral galaxy NGC6503. The resolved images, in B, V, R, i, and Halpha, show an irregular appearance due to bright stars with underlying, smooth and unresolved stellar emission. It is classified as the transition type (dIrr/dSph). Its structural properties are similar to those of the dwarfs in the Local Group, with a V absolute magnitude ~ -10.5, half-light radius ~400 pc, and central surface brightness ~25.2. Despite the low stellar surface bright…
We present deep V and I photometry of the isolated dwarf galaxy VV124=UGC4879, obtained from archival images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope - Advanced Camera for Surveys. In the color-magnitude diagrams of stars at distances larger than 40" from the center of the galaxy, we clearly identify for the first time a well-populated old Horizontal Branch (HB). We show that the distribution of these stars is more extended than that of Red Clump stars. This implies that very old and metal poor populations becomes more and more dominant in the outskirts of VV124. We also identify a massive (M~1.2…
The demographics of dwarf galaxy populations have long been in tension with predictions from the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) paradigm. If primordial density fluctuations were scale-free as predicted, dwarf galaxies should themselves host dark matter subhaloes, the most massive of which may have undergone star formation resulting in dwarf galaxy groups. Ensembles of dwarf galaxies are observed as satellites of more massive galaxies, and there is observational and theoretical evidence to suggest that these satellites at z=0 were captured by the massive host halo as a group. However, the evolution of …
We report the discovery of a new faint dwarf galaxy, GHOSTS I, using HST/ACS data from one of our GHOSTS (Galaxy Halos, Outer disks, Substructure, Thick disk, and Star clusters) fields. Its detected individual stars populate an approximately one magnitude range of its luminosity function (LF). Using synthetic color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to compare with the galaxy's CMD, we find that the colors and magnitudes of GHOSTS I's individual stars are most consistent with being young helium-burning and asymptotic giant branch stars at a distance of 12 +/- 2 Mpc. Morphologically, GHOSTS I appears to…
The dynamics of isolated galaxy pairs represents an important tool to investigate the behavior of gravity in the low acceleration regime. Statistical analysis of a large sample of galaxy pairs led to the noticeable discovery of a region of preferred 3-dimensional velocities centered at $\sim 150$ km/s and $\sim 100$ km/s wide, a feature hard to justify in the context of numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. It is shown here that such a feature is expected within the framework of the Modified Newtonian Dynamics, which, however, predicts it to be centered at $\sim$ 170 Km/s.
We present spectroscopic data for 180 red giant branch stars in the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. Observations of the Calcium II triplet lines in spectra of RGB stars covering the entire galaxy were obtained with FORS2 at the VLT and DEIMOS on Keck II allowing us to derive velocities, metallicities, and ages for the stars. With accompanying photometric and radio data we have measured the structural parameters of the stellar and gaseous populations over the full galaxy. The stellar populations show an intrinsically thick configuration with $0.39 \leq q_{0} \leq 0.57$. The stellar rotatio…
The hierarchical galaxy formation scenario in the Cold Dark Matter cosmogony with a non-vanishing cosmological constant and geometrically flat space has been very successful in explaining the large-scale distribution of galaxies. However, there have been claims that the scenario predicts too many satellite galaxies associated with massive galaxies compared to observations, called the missing satellite galaxy problem. Isolated groups of galaxies hosted by passively evolving massive early-type galaxies are ideal laboratories for finding the missing physics in the current theory. Here we report f…
In optical images, the not amply studied isolated interacting galaxy pair KPG 486 (NGC 6090) displays similar features to the galaxy pair The Antennae (NGC 4038/39). To compare the distribution of ionized hydrogen gas, morphology and kinematic and dynamic behaviour between both galaxy pairs, we present observations in the H$α$ emission line of NGC 6090 acquired with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, PUMA. For each galaxy in NGC 6090 we obtained several kinematic parameters, its velocity field and its rotation curve, we also analysed some of the perturbations induced by their encounter. …
The role of the environment on galaxy evolution is still not fully understood. In order to quantify and set limits on the role of nurture one must identify and study a sample of isolated galaxies. The AMIGA project "Analysis of the Interstellar Medium of Isolated GAlaxies" is doing a multi-wavelength study of a large sample of isolated galaxies in order to examine their interstellar medium and star formation activity. We processed data for 950 galaxies from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG, Karachentseva 1973) and evaluated their isolation using an automated star-galaxy classification p…
We present a photometric study of the isolated elliptical NGC 6411 and its globular cluster (GC) system, based on Gemini/GMOS g', r', i' photometry. This galaxy has been the host of a SNIa. Spectral studies indicate an intermediate-age and very metal-rich stellar population in its inner region. The extent of the globular cluster system is about 65 kpc. Its population contains $700\pm45$ members, implying a rather poor system, as normally found for isolated ellipticals. The colour bimodality and luminosity distribution are typical of old GC systems. An excess of bright GCs with intermediate col…
We measured velocities of 862 individual red giant stars in seven isolated dwarf galaxies in the Local Group: NGC 6822, IC 1613, VV 124 (UGC 4879), the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy (DDO 216), Leo A, Cetus, and Aquarius (DDO 210). We also computed velocity dispersions, taking into account the measurement uncertainties on individual stars. None of the isolated galaxies is denser than the densest Local Group satellite galaxy. Furthermore, the isolated dwarf galaxies have no obvious distinction in the velocity dispersion--half-light radius plane from the satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and M…
The present paper is devoted to the construction of a catalog of isolated galaxy pairs extracted from the HyperLEDA extragalactic database. The radial velocities of the galaxies in the pairs are in the range $[3000,16000]$ km.s$^{-1}$. In order to get an unbiased pair catalog as complete as possible, we have limited the absolute magnitude of the galaxies to $M \leq-18.5$). The criteria used to define the isolated galaxy pairs are the following: 1) Velocity criterion: radial velocity difference between the pair members $ΔV<500$ km.s$^{-1}$; 2) Interdistance criterion: projected distance between…
Observations of the highly isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy KKs 3 = [KK2000] 03 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) are presented. We measured the galaxy distance of $2.12\pm0.07$ Mpc using the Tip of Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method. The total blue absolute magnitude of the galaxy is estimated as $M_B = -10.8$ mag. We briefly discuss the star formation history of KKs 3 derived from its colour-magnitude diagram. According to our calculation, the total stellar mass of the galaxy is $2.3\times10^7M_{\odot}$, and most stars (74\%) were formed at an early epoch mo…
Examining a catalogue of isolated galaxy pairs, a preferred orbital intervelocity of ~150 km/s was recently reported. This discovery is difficult to reconcile with the expectations from Newtonian numerical simulations of cosmological structure formations. In a previous paper we have shown that a preferred intervelocity for galaxy pairs is expected in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Here a detailed analysis of the MOND predictions is presented, showing that a remarkable agreement with the observations can be achieved for a mass to light ratio M/L~1 in solar units. This agrees with the expec…
Multi-band images of the very isolated spiral galaxy NGC 5523 show a number of unusual features consistent with NGC 5523 having experienced a significant merger: (1) Near-infrared (NIR) images from the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the WIYN 3.5-m telescope reveal a nucleated bulge-like structure embedded in a spiral disk. (2) The bulge is offset by ~1.8 kpc from a brightness minimum at the center of the optically bright inner disk. (3) A tidal stream, possibly associated with an ongoing satellite interaction, extends from the nucleated bulge along the disk. We interpret these properties as…
We have used the Arecibo L-band Feed Array to map three regions, each of 5 square degrees, around the isolated galaxies NGC 1156, UGC 2082, and NGC 5523. In the vicinity of these galaxies we have detected two dwarf companions: one near UGC 2082, previously discovered by ALFALFA, and one near NGC 1156, discovered by this project and reported in an earlier paper. This is significantly fewer than the 15.4 $^{+1.7}_{-1.5}$ that would be expected from the field HI mass function from ALFALFA or the 8.9 $\pm$ 1.2 expected if the HI mass function from the Local Group applied in these regions. The numb…
The correlation between fresh gas accretion onto haloes and galaxy star formation is critical to understanding galaxy formation. Different theoretical models have predicted different correlation strengths between halo accretion rates and galaxy star formation rates, ranging from strong positive correlations to little or no correlation. Here, we present a technique to observationally measure this correlation strength for isolated Milky Way-mass galaxies with $z < 0.123$. This technique is based on correlations between dark matter accretion rates and the projected density profile of neighbouring…
We report the discovery of an isolated compact galaxy triplet SDSS J084843.45+164417.3, which is first detected by the LAMOST spectral survey and then confirmed by the spectroscopic observation of the BFOSC of the 2.16 meter telescope. It is found that this triplet is an isolated and extremely compact system, which has an aligned configuration and very small radial velocity dispersion. The member galaxies have similar colors and show marginal star formation activities. These results enhance the opinion that the compact triplets are well-evolved systems rather than the hierarchically forming st…
We present preliminary results of the spectral analysis on the radial distributions of the star formation history in both, a galaxy merger and a spiral isolated galaxy observed with MaNGA. We find that the central part of the isolated galaxy is composed by older stellar population ($\sim$2 Gyr) than in the outskirts ($\sim$7 Gyr). Also, the time-scale is gradually larger from 1 Gyr in the inner part to 3 Gyr in the outer regions of the galaxy. In the case of the merger, the stellar population in the central region is older than in the tails, presenting a longer time-scale in comparison to cent…
The construction of catalogues of galaxies and the a posteriori study of galaxy properties in relation to their environment have been hampered by scarce redshift information. The new 3-dimensional (3D) surveys permit small, faint, physically bound satellites to be distinguished from a background-projected galaxy population. We aim to provide representative samples of isolated galaxies, isolated pairs, and isolated triplets for testing galaxy evolution and secular processes in low density regions of the local Universe, as well as to characterise their local and large-scale environments. We used…
We have considered the star formation properties of 1616 isolated galaxies from the 2MASS XSC selected sample (2MIG) with the FUV GALEX magnitudes. This sample was then compared with corresponding properties of isolated galaxies from the Local Orphan Galaxies catalogue (LOG) and paired galaxies. We found that different selection algorithms define different populations of isolated galaxies. The population of the LOG catalogue, selected from non-clustered galaxies in the Local Supercluster volume, mostly consists of low-mass spiral and late type galaxies. The SSFR upper limit in isolated and pai…
Understanding the dynamics of galaxy triplet systems is one of the significant ways of obtaining insight into the dynamics of large galaxy clusters. Toward that aim, we present a detailed study of all isolated triplet systems (total of 315) taken from the `SDSS-based catalogue of Isolated Triplets' (SIT). In addition, we compared our results with those obtained for a sample of triplets from the Local Supercluster (LS), SDSS-triplets, Tully's catalogue, Wide (W) and Compact (K)-triplets. In addition, we performed the correlation between the dynamical parameters and the Large Scale Structure (LS…
The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) has detected a nearby HI source at a heliocentric velocity of +363 km/s . The object was detected through its neutral hydrogen emission and has an obvious possible optical counterpart in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data (though it does not have an optical redshift measurement). We discuss three possible scenarios for the object : 1) It is within the Local Group, in which case its HI properties are comparable with recently discovered ultra-compact high velocity clouds; 2) It is just behind the Local Group, in which case its optical characteristic…
We present scanning Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of CIG 993, an apparently isolated luminous infrared galaxy also exhibiting luminous blue compact and Wolf-Rayet galaxy features, as well as high star formation rate. Our high resolution observations of the H$α$ emission line allowed us to derive the radial velocity field, as well as the velocity dispersion $σ$, and the residual velocity fields of the galaxy. This galaxy exhibits several kinematical components. On one hand, the velocity gradients detected on the velocity field can be associated with a rotating disk -contrary to previ…
We compute the evolution of the grain size distribution (GSD) in a suite of numerical simulations of an isolated Milky-Way-like galaxy using the $N$-body/smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics code {\sc Gadget-4}. The full GSD is sampled on a logarithmically spaced grid with 30 bins, and its evolution is calculated self-consistently with the hydrodynamical and chemical evolution of the galaxy using a state-of-the-art star formation and feedback model. In previous versions of this model, the GSD tended to be slightly biased towards larger grains and the extinction curve had a tendency to be flatter th…
Using photometric galaxies from the HSC survey, we measure the stellar mass density profiles for satellite galaxies as a function of the projected distance, $r_p$, to isolated central galaxies (ICGs) selected from SDSS/DR7 spectroscopic galaxies at $z\sim0.1$. By stacking HSC images, we also measure the projected stellar mass density profiles for ICGs and their stellar halos. The total mass distributions are further measured from HSC weak lensing signals. ICGs dominate within $\sim$0.15 times the halo virial radius ($0.15R_{200}$). The stellar mass versus total mass fractions drop with the inc…
We present a detailed study of the extremely isolated Sdm galaxy UGC4722 (M_B = -17.4) located in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. UGC4722 is a member of the catalogue of isolated galaxies, and has also been identified as one of the most isolated galaxies in the Local Supercluster. Optical images of the galaxy however show that it has a peculiar morphology with an elongated ~ 14 kpc long plume. New observations with the Russian 6-m telescope (BTA) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of the ionised and neutral gas in UGC4722 reveal the second component responsible for the disturbed morph…
We use the halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework to characterise the predictions from two independent galaxy formation models for the galactic content of dark matter haloes and its evolution with redshift. Our galaxy samples correspond to a range of fixed number densities defined by stellar mass and span $0 \le z \le 3$. We find remarkable similarities between the model predictions. Differences arise at low galaxy number densities which are sensitive to the treatment of heating of the hot halo by active galactic nuclei. The evolution of the form of the HOD can be described in a relative…
The present paper is devoted to the construction of a catalog of isolated galaxy pairs from the Uppsala Galaxy Catalog (UGC), using accurate radial velocities. The UGC lists 12921 galaxies to declination larger than -2 deg 30 min and is complete to an apparent diameter of 1 arcmin. The criteria used to define the isolated galaxy pairs are the following: 1) Velocity criterion: radial velocity difference between the members lower than 500 km/s; 2) Interdistance criterion: projected distance between the members smaller than 1 Mpc; 3) Reciprocity criterion: each member is the closest galaxy to the…
We study the baryon content of low mass galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR8), focusing on galaxies in isolated environments where the complicating physics of galaxy-galaxy interactions are minimized. We measure neutral hydrogen (HI) gas masses and line-widths for 148 isolated galaxies with stellar mass between $10^7$ and $10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$. We compare isolated low mass galaxies to more massive galaxies and galaxies in denser environments by remeasuring HI emission lines from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey 40% data release. All isolated low mass galaxi…
We investigate the globular cluster system of the isolated elliptical NGC 7796, present new photometry of the galaxy, and use published kinematical data to constrain the dark matter content. Deep images in B and R, obtained with the VIsible MultiObject Spectrograph (VIMOS) at the VLT, form the data base. We present isotropic and anisotropic Jeans-models and give a morphological description of the companion dwarf galaxy. The globular cluster system has about 2000 members, so it is not as rich as those of giant ellipticals in galaxy clusters with a comparable stellar mass, but richer than many c…
Galaxy triplets are interesting laboratories where we can study the formation and the evolution of small and large systems of galaxies. This study aims to investigate signs of interaction between the members of nine isolated galaxy triplet systems (27 galaxies) selected from the "SDSS-based catalogue of Isolated Triplets" (SIT) with members brighter than 17.0 ($m_r\le$ 17.0) in the $r-$band, and mean projected separation between the members of $r_p \leq$ 0.1 Mpc. In this work, we performed a one-dimensional (1D) fitting of the surface brightness profiles and a two-dimensional (2D) modeling of …
We investigate the global neutral hydrogen (HI) content of isolated galaxies selected from the SDSS spectroscopic survey with optical evidence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Our sample includes galaxies with unresolved HI observations from the ALFALFA 70% data release combined with deeper HI observations of low-mass galaxies with 7.0 < log(M*) < 9.5. We examine the HI masses of this sample using the distance from the star-forming sequence on the OIII\Hb and NII\Ha Baldwin Phillips Terlevich (BPT) diagram as a measurement of AGN activity. In agreement with previous studies, we find that, for …
The environment where galaxies reside affects their evolutionary histories. Galaxy triplets (systems composed of three physically bound galaxies) constitute one of simplest group of galaxies and are therefore excellent laboratories to study evolutionary mechanisms where effects of the environment are minimal. We present a statistical study of the dynamical properties of isolated galaxy triplets as a function of their local and large scale environments. To explore the connection of the dynamical evolution on the systems with the evolution of the galaxies composing the triplets, we consider obse…
We study the magnetic field evolution of an isolated spiral galaxy, using isolated Milky Way-mass galaxy formation simulations and a novel prescription for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) supernova feedback. Our main result is that a galactic dynamo can be seeded and driven by supernova explosions, resulting in magnetic fields whose strength and morphology is consistent with observations. In our model, supernovae supply thermal energy, and a low level magnetic field along with their ejecta. The thermal expansion drives turbulence, which serves a dual role by efficiently mixing the magnetic field int…

We present the largest catalogue of HI single dish observations of isolated galaxies to date and the corresponding HI scaling relations, as part of the multi-wavelength project AMIGA (Analysis of the interstellar Medium in Isolated GAlaxies). Despite numerous studies of the HI content of galaxies, no revision has been made for the most isolated L* galaxies since 1984. In total we have measurements or constraints on the HI masses of 844 galaxies from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG), obtained with our own observations at Arecibo, Effelsberg, Nancay and GBT, and spectra from the literatu…
We report the serendipitous identification of a low mass ($M_* \sim 2\times 10^6 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$), isolated, likely quenched dwarf galaxy in the "foreground" of the COSMOS-CANDELS field. From deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging we infer a surface brightness fluctuation distance for COSMOS-dw1 of $D_{\mathrm{SBF}} = 22 \pm 3$ Mpc, which is consistent with its radial velocity of $cz = 1222 \pm 64$ km s$^{-1}$ via Keck/LRIS. At this distance, the galaxy is 1.4 Mpc in projection from its nearest massive neighbor. We do not detect significant H$α$ emission (EW(H$α$)$ = -0.4 \pm 0.5$ angs…
We study various implementations of supernova feedback model and present the results of our `Osaka feedback model' using isolated galaxy simulations performed by the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code {\small GADGET-3}. Our model is a modified version of Stinson et al.'s work, and we newly add the momentum kick for SN feedback rather than only thermal feedback. We incorporate the physical properties of SN remnants from the results of Chevalier and McKee \& Ostriker, such as the effective radius of SN bubble and the remnant life-time, in the form of Sedov-Taylor (ST)-like solutions with…
Many catalogues of isolated compact groups of galaxies (CGs) have been extracted using Hickson's criteria to identify isolated, dense systems of galaxies, with at least three or four galaxies concordant in magnitude and redshift. But is not clear to what extent the catalogues of CGs are complete and reliable, relative to 3D truly isolated, dense groups. Using five different semi-analytical models of galaxy formation (SAMs), we identify isolated dense groups in 3D real space, containing at least three galaxies. We then build mock redshift space galaxy catalogues and run a Hickson-like CG finder…
Recent studies suggest that the quenching properties of galaxies are correlated over several mega-parsecs. The large-scale "galactic conformity" phenomenon around central galaxies has been regarded as a potential signature of "galaxy assembly bias" or "pre-heating", both of which interpret conformity as a result of direct environmental effects acting on galaxy formation. Building on the iHOD halo quenching framework developed in Zu & Mandelbaum (2015, 2016), we discover that our fiducial halo mass quenching model, without any galaxy assembly bias, can successfully explain the overall environme…
We present the results of a set of numerical simulations aimed at studying reionization at galactic scale. We use a high resolution simulation of the formation of the Milky Way-M31 system to simulate the reionization of the local group. The reionization calculation was performed with the post-processing radiative transfer code ATON and the underlying cosmological simulation was performed as part of the CLUES project. We vary the source models to bracket the range of source properties used in the literature. We investigate the structure and propagation of the galatic ionization fronts by a visu…
Theoretically, inflowing filaments of gas are one of the main causes of growth for a galaxy. Nonetheless, observationally, probing ongoing gas accretion is challenging. As part of the Gas Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) program, we present the analysis of a spiral galaxy at z=0.04648 whose characteristics indeed are consistent with a scenario in which gas accretion plays a major role. The most salient indirect parts of evidence that support this picture are: 1) The galaxy is isolated, its position rules out the mechanisms expected in dense environments. 2) It shows a pronounce…
We report on the results of radio observations in the 21 cm emission line of atomic hydrogen (HI) of four relatively isolated ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs): DGSAT I, R-127-1, M-161-1, and SECCO-dI-2. Our Effelsberg observations resulted in non-detections for the first three UDGs, and a clear detection for the last. DGSAT I, R-127-1, and M-161-1 are quiescent galaxies with gas fractions that are much lower than those of typical field galaxies of the same stellar mass. On the other hand, SECCO-dI-2 is a star forming gas-rich dwarf, similar to two other field UDGs that have literature HI data: SE…
We explore how environment affects the metallicity of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using 13 low mass galaxy groups (2-5 galaxies) at $\langle z_{abs}\rangle=0.25$ identified near background quasars. Using quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach with Cloudy to estimate metallicities of cool ($T\sim10^4$K) CGM gas within groups and compare them to CGM metallicities of 47 isolated galaxies. Both group and isolated CGM metallicities span a wide range ($-2<…
In order to better understand the relationship between feedback and galactic chemical evolution, we have developed a new model for stellar feedback at grid resolutions of only a few parsecs in global disk simulations, using the adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamics code Enzo. For the first time in galaxy scale simulations, we simulate detailed stellar feedback from individual stars including asymptotic giant branch winds, photoelectric heating, Lyman-Werner radiation, ionizing radiation tracked through an adaptive ray-tracing radiative transfer method, and core collapse and Type Ia supernovae…
We investigate the isolated, quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) DGSAT I and its globular cluster (GC) system using two orbits of Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging in the F606W and F814W filters. This is the first study of GCs around a UDG in a low-density environment. DGSAT I was previously found to host an irregular blue low surface brightness clump, that we confirm as very likely belonging to the galaxy rather than being a chance projection, and represents a recent episode of star formation (${\sim}500~\mathrm{Myr}$) that challenges some UDG formation scenarios. We…
The connection between the bulge mass or bulge luminosity in disk galaxies and the number, spatial and phase space distribution of associated dwarf galaxies is a discriminator between cosmological simulations related to galaxy formation in cold dark matter and generalized gravity models. Here, a nearby sample of isolated Milky Way class edge-on galaxies is introduced, to facilitate observational campaigns to detect the associated families of dwarf galaxies at low surface brightness. Three galaxy pairs with at least one of the targets being edge-on are also introduced. About 60% of the catalogu…
We present an analysis of physical and morphological properties of an interacting pair of dwarf galaxies UGC 4703 located at the vicinity of an isolated Milky-Way (MW) type spiral galaxy NGC 2718. Based on the comparison of physical and morphological properties with that of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), we report that the UGC 4703 pair-NGC 2718 system is probably an LMC-SMC-MW analogue. Located at a sky projected distance of 81 kpc from NGC 2718, we find that UGC 4703 is clearly interacting with its nearby smaller mass companion UGC 4703B forming a bridge of stellar stre…
As tracers of star formation, galaxy assembly and mass distribution, globular clusters have provided important clues to our understanding of early-type galaxies. But their study has been mostly constrained to galaxy groups and clusters where early-type galaxies dominate, leaving the properties of the globular cluster systems (GCSs) of isolated ellipticals as a mostly uncharted territory. We present Gemini-South/GMOS $g'i'$ observations of five isolated elliptical galaxies: NGC 3962, NGC 2865, IC 4889, NGC 2271 and NGC 4240. Photometry of their GCSs reveals clear color bimodality in three of th…
