Outflows form an integral component in regulating the gas cycling in and out of galaxies, although their impact on the galaxy hosts is still poorly understood. Here we present an analysis of 405 high mass (log M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}\geqslant10$), star-forming galaxies (excluding AGN) with low inclinations at $z\sim$0, using stacking techniques of the NaD $λλ$5889,5895 A neutral gas tracer in IFU observations from the MaNGA DR15 survey. We detect outflows in the central regions of 78/405 galaxies and determine their extent and power through the construction of stacked annuli. We find outflows are most powerful in central regions and extend out to $\sim$1R$_{e}$, with declining mass outflow rates and loading factors as a function of radius. The stacking of spaxels over key galaxy quantities reveals outflow detections in regions of high $Σ_{\text{SFR}}$ ($\gtrsim$0.01 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$) and $Σ_{M_{*}}$ ($\gtrsim$10$^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$kpc$^{-2}$) along the resolved main sequence. Clear correlations with $Σ_{\text{SFR}}$ suggest it is the main regulator of outflows, with a critical threshold of $\sim$0.01 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$ needed to escape the weight of the disk and launch them. Furthermore, measurements of the H$δ$ and D$_{n}$4000 indices reveal virtually identical star formation histories between galaxies with outflows and those without. Finally, through stacking of HI 21 cm observations for a subset of our sample, we find outflow galaxies show reduced HI gas fractions at central velocities compared to their non-detection control counterparts, suggestive of some removal of HI gas, likely in the central regions of the galaxies, but not enough to completely quench the host.
Outflows in quasars during the early epochs of galaxy evolution are an important part of the feedback mechanisms potentially affecting the evolution of the host galaxy. However, systematic observations of outflows are only now becoming possible with the advent of sensitive mm telescopes. In this study we use spectral stacking methods to search for faint high velocity outflow signal in a sample of [C II] detected, z ~ 6 quasars. We search for broad emission line signatures from high-velocity outflows for a sample of 26 z ~ 6 quasars observed with ALMA, with a detection of the [C II] line. The o…
Large scale outflows of different gas phases are ubiquitous in the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Despite their many differences, they share a common property - they all contain dust. The dust is carried with the outflow, heated by the AGN, and emits at infrared wavelengths. This paper shows that the infrared emission of this dust can be used to detect AGN outflows and derive their properties. We use a sample of about 4000 type II AGN and compare the infrared properties of systems that show spectroscopic signature of ionized gas outflows to systems that do not. We detect an add…
We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the [C II] 158 um emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4 < z < 6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C II] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Searching for typical signatures of outflows in the high-velocity tails of the stacked [C II] profile, we observe (i) deviations from a single-component Gaussian model in the combined residuals and (ii) broad emission in the stacked [C II] spectrum, with velocities of |v|<~ 500 km/s. The significance of these features increases when stacking the s…
This paper investigates the neutral gas phase of galactic winds via the Na I D$λλ5890,5895$Å feature within $z \sim 0.04$ MaNGA galaxies, and directly compares their incidence and strength to the ionized winds detected within the same parent sample. We find evidence for neutral outflows in 127 galaxies ($\sim 5$ per cent of the analysed line-emitting sample). Na I D winds are preferentially seen in galaxies with dustier central regions and both wind phases are more often found in systems with elevated SFR surface densities, especially when there has been a recent upturn in the star formation a…
We present the best sensitivity and angular resolution maps of the molecular disk and outflow of Mrk 231, as traced by CO observations obtained with IRAM/PdBI, and we analyze archival Chandra and NuSTAR observations. We constrain the physical properties of both the molecular disk and outflow, the presence of a highly-ionized ultra-fast nuclear wind, and their connection. The molecular outflow has a size of ~1 kpc, and extends in all directions around the nucleus, being more prominent along the south-west to north-east direction, suggesting a wide-angle biconical geometry. The maximum projected…
The global influence of AGN-driven outflows remains uncertain, due to a lack of large samples with accurately-determined outflow properties. In the second paper of this series, we determine the mass and energetics of ionized outflows is 234 type II AGN, the largest such sample to date, by combining the infrared emission of the dust in the wind (paper I) with the emission line properties. We provide new general expressions for the properties of the outflowing gas, which depend on the ionization state of the gas. We also present a novel method to estimate the electron density in the outflow, bas…
We present a new theoretical framework for using entropy to understand how outflows driven by supernovae are launched from disc galaxies: via continuous, buoyant acceleration through the circumgalactic medium (CGM). When young star clusters detonate supernovae in the interstellar medium (ISM) of a galaxy, they generate hot, diffuse bubbles that push on the surrounding ISM and evaporate that ISM into their interiors. As these bubbles reach the scale height of the ISM, they break out of the disc, rising into the CGM. Once these bubbles break out, if they have sufficiently high entropy, they will…

Energy injection by supernovae may drive hot supersonic galactic winds in rapidly star-forming galaxies, driving metal-enriched gas into the circumgalactic medium and potentially accelerating cool gas. If sufficiently mass-loaded, such flows become radiative within the wind-driving region, reducing the overall mass outflow rate from the host galaxy. We show that this sets a maximum on the total outflow momentum for hot energy-driven winds. For a spherical wind of Solar metallicity driven by continuous star formation, $\dot p_\rm{max} \simeq 1.9\times10^4\ M_\odot/\rm{yr\ km/s}\ (α/0.9)^{0.86}(…
We use MUSE adaptive optics (AO) data in Narrow Field Mode to study the properties of the ionised gas in MR 2251-178 and PG 1126-041, two nearby (z~0.06) bright quasars hosting sub-pc scale Ultra Fast Outflows (UFOs) detected in the X-ray band. We decompose the optical emission from diffuse gas into a low- and a high-velocity components. The former is characterised by a clean, regular velocity field and a low (~80 km/s) velocity dispersion. It traces regularly rotating gas in PG 1126-041, while in MR 2251-178 it is possibly associated to tidal debris from a recent merger or flyby. The other co…
Using ultra-violet absorption-lines, we analyze the systematic properties of the warm ionized phase of starburst-driven winds in a sample of 39 low-redshift objects that spans broad ranges in starburst and galaxy properties. Total column densities for the outflows are $\sim$10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. The outflow velocity (v$_{out}$) correlates only weakly with the galaxy stellar mass (M$_*$), or circular velocity (v$_{cir}$), but strongly with both SFR and SFR/area. The normalized outflow velocity (v$_{out}/v_{cir}$) correlates well with both SFR/area and SFR/M$_*$. The estimated outflow rates of wa…
We study the impact of stellar winds and supernovae on the multi-phase interstellar medium using three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations carried out with FLASH. The selected galactic disc region has a size of (500 pc)$^2$ x $\pm$ 5 kpc and a gas surface density of 10 M$_{\odot}$/pc$^2$. The simulations include an external stellar potential and gas self-gravity, radiative cooling and diffuse heating, sink particles representing star clusters, stellar winds from these clusters which combine the winds from indi- vidual massive stars by following their evolution tracks, and subsequent superno…
Small scale turbulence alongside with large scale turbulence in a z=1.87 star Forming Galaxy with outflowing wind, revealed by Multi-point structure functions
Galactic outflows of molecular gas are a common occurrence in galaxies and may represent a mechanism by which galaxies self-regulate their growth, redistributing gas that could otherwise have formed stars. We previously presented the first survey of molecular outflows at z > 4 towards a sample of massive, dusty galaxies. Here we characterize the physical properties of the molecular outflows discovered in our survey. Using low-redshift outflows as a training set, we find agreement at the factor-of-two level between several outflow rate estimates. We find molecular outflow rates 150-800Msun/yr a…
Outflows from starburst galaxies can be driven by thermal pressure, radiation and cosmic rays. We present an analytic phenomenological model that accounts for these contributions simultaneously to investigate their effects on the hydrodynamical properties of outflows. We assess the impact of energy injection, wind opacity, magnetic field strength and the mass of the host galaxy on flow velocity, temperature, density and pressure profiles. For an M82-like wind, a thermally-dominated driving mechanism is found to deliver the fastest and hottest wind. Radiation-driven winds in typical starburst-g…
In Tombesi et al. (2015), we reported the first direct evidence for a quasar accretion disk wind driving a massive molecular outflow. The target was F11119+3257, an ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) with unambiguous type-1 quasar optical broad emission lines. The energetics of the accretion disk wind and molecular outflow were found to be consistent with the predictions of quasar feedback models where the molecular outflow is driven by a hot energy-conserving bubble inflated by the inner quasar accretion disk wind. However, this conclusion was uncertain because the energetics were estimate…
Galaxy formation and evolution are regulated by the feedback from galactic winds. Absorption lines provide the most widely available probe of winds. However, since most data only provide information integrated along the line-of-sight, they do not directly constrain the radial structure of the outflows. In this paper, we present a method to directly measure the gas electron density in outflows (ne), which in turn yields estimates of outflow cloud properties (e.g., density, volume filling-factor, and sizes/masses). We also estimate the distance (r) from the starburst at which the observed densit…
Outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are expected to have a significant impact on the host galaxy evolution, but it is still debated how they are accelerated and propagate on galaxy-wide scales. This work addresses these questions by studying the link between X-ray, nuclear ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) and extended ionised outflows, for the first time in two quasars close to the peak of AGN activity ($z\sim2$), where AGN feedback is expected to be more effective. As targets, we selected two multiple-lensed quasars at $z\sim1.5$, HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138, known to host UFOs and…

We present ALMA observations of the inner 1' (1.2 kpc) of the Circinus galaxy, the nearest Seyfert. We target CO (1-0) in the region associated with a well-known multiphase outflow driven by the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). While the geometry of Circinus and its outflow make disentangling the latter difficult, we see indications of outflowing molecular gas at velocities consistent with the ionized outflow. We constrain the mass of the outflowing molecular gas to be 1.5e5 -5.1e6 solar masses, yielding a molecular outflow rate of 0.35-12.3 solar masses per year. The values within this …
We present the first systematic study of 50 low redshift ($0.66 < z < 1.63$) iron low-ionization broad absorption-line quasars (FeLoBALQs) using $SimBAL$ which represents a more than five-fold increase in the number of FeLoBALQs with detailed absorption line spectral analyses. We found the outflows have a wide range of ionization parameters, $-4\lesssim\log U\lesssim 1.2$ and densities, $2.8\lesssim\log n\lesssim8\ \rm[cm^{-3}]$. The objects in our sample showed FeLoBAL gas located at a wide range of distances $0\lesssim\log R\lesssim 4.4$ [pc], although we do not find any evidence for disk wi…
Galactic-scale outflows regulate the stellar mass growth and chemical enrichment of galaxies, yet key outflow properties such as the chemical composition and mass loss rate remain largely unknown. We address these properties with Keck/ESI echellete spectra of nine gravitationally lensed z=2-3 star forming galaxies, probing a range of absorption transitions. Interstellar absorption in our sample is dominated by outflowing material, with typical velocities -150 km/s. Approximately 80% of the total column density is associated with a net outflow. Mass loss rates in the low ionization phase are co…
We study the dynamics of stellar wind from one of the bodies in the binary system, where the other body interacts only gravitationally. We focus on following three issues: (i) we explore the origin of observed periodic variations in maser intensity; (ii) we address the nature of bipolar molecular outflows; and (iii) we show generation of baroclinicity in the same model setup. From direct numerical simulations and further numerical modelling, we find that the maser intensity along a given line of sight varies periodically due to periodic modulation of material density. This modulation period is…
HH 212 is a Class 0 protostellar system found to host a "hamburger"-shaped dusty disk with a rotating disk atmosphere and a collimated SiO jet at a distance of ~ 400 pc. Recently, a compact rotating outflow has been detected in SO and SO2 toward the center along the jet axis at ~ 52 au (0.13") resolution. Here we resolve the compact outflow into a small-scale wide-opening rotating outflow shell and a collimated jet, with the observations in the same S-bearing molecules at ~ 16 au (0.04") resolution. The collimated jet is aligned with the SiO jet, tracing the shock interactions in the jet. The …
Winds driven by stellar feedback are an essential part of the galactic ecosystem and are the main mechanism through which low-mass galaxies regulate their star formation. These winds are generally observed to be multi-phase with detections of entrained neutral and molecular gas. They are also thought to enrich the circum-galactic medium around galaxies with metals and dust. This ejected dust encodes information about the integrated star formation and outflow history of the galaxy. It is therefore, important to understand how much dust is entrained and driven out of the disc by galactic winds. …
The ngVLA will obtain breakthrough observations of the cold phases (molecular and atomic) of galactic outflows. These observations will be key to study the driving mechanisms of cold winds, the fate of the gas, the mass-loss rates, the conditions that trigger cold outflows, the fraction of gas that escapes galaxies, the effects of winds on suppressing star formation and slowing black hole growth, the statistical properties of outflows, and the relation between large scale outflows and UFOs and BAL outflows. Finally, we highlight the ngVLA complementarity with existing and planned facilities, s…
We present the Cholla Galactic OutfLow Simulations (CGOLS) suite, a set of extremely high resolution global simulations of isolated disk galaxies designed to clarify the nature of multiphase structure in galactic winds. Using the GPU-based code Cholla, we achieve unprecedented resolution in these simulations, modeling galaxies over a 20 kpc region at a constant resolution of 5 pc. The simulations include a feedback model designed to test the effects of different mass- and energy-loading factors on galactic outflows over kiloparsec scales. In addition to describing the simulation methodology in…
NGC4460 is an isolated lenticular galaxy, in which galactic wind has been earlier discovered as a gas outflow associated with circumnuclear regions of star formation. Using the results of observations in the Halpha line with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer on the SAO RAS 6-m telescope, we studied the kinematics of the ionized gas in this galaxy. The parameters of gas outflow from the plane of the galactic disk were refined within a simple geometric model. We show that it is impossible to characterize the wind by a fixed velocity value. Characteristic outflow velocities are within 30..8…
Young stars are associated with prominent outflows of molecular gas. The ejection of gas via these outflows is believed to remove angular momentum from the protostellar system, thus permitting young stars to grow by accretion of material from the protostellar disk. The underlying mechanism for outflow ejection is not yet understood, but is believed to be closely linked to the protostellar disk. Assorted scenarios have been proposed to explain protostellar outflows; the main difference between these models is the region where acceleration of material takes place: close to the protostar itself (…
During the last decade, wide-angle powerful outflows from AGN, both on parsec and kpc scales, have been detected in many galaxies. These outflows are widely suspected to be responsible for sweeping galaxies clear of their gas. We present the analytical model describing the propagation of such outflows and calculate their observable properties. Large-scale AGN-driven outflows should have kinetic luminosities \sim ηL_Edd/2 \sim 0.05L_Edd and momentum rates \sim 20L_Edd/c, where L_Edd is the Eddington luminosity of the central black hole and η \sim 0.1 its radiative accretion efficiency. This cre…
We present a census of ionized gas outflows in 599 normal galaxies at redshift 0.6<z<2.7, mostly based on integral field spectroscopy of Ha, [NII], and [SII] line emission. The sample fairly homogeneously covers the main sequence of star-forming galaxies with masses 9.0<log(M*/Msun)<11.7, and probes into the regimes of quiescent galaxies and starburst outliers. About 1/3 exhibits the high-velocity component indicative of outflows, roughly equally split into winds driven by star formation (SF) and active galactic nuclei (AGN). The incidence of SF-driven winds correlates mainly with star formati…
We explore the effect of momentum-driven winds representing radiation pressure driven outflows from accretion onto supermassive black holes in a set of numerical hydrodynamical simulations. We explore two matched sets of cosmological zoom-in runs of 24 halos with masses ~$10^{12.0}-10^{13.4}$ M_sun run with two different feedback models. Our `NoAGN' model includes stellar feedback via UV heating, stellar winds and supernovae, photoelectric heating and cosmic X-ray background heating from a meta-galactic background. Our fiducial `MrAGN' model is identical except that it also includes a model fo…
We have mapped the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 17150-3224 in 350 GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 line at an angular resolution of about 0".09 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. A continuum source is detected at the center of the nebula, elongated along the equatorial plane, likely tracing a dusty torus around the central source. Continuum emission is also detected on both sides of the central continuum source in the equatorial plane, probably resulting from interactions of collimated fast winds with envelope material in the equator. CO emission is detected along the optical lobe.…
Protostellar outflow is a prominent process that accompanies the formation of stars. It is generally agreed that wide-angled protostellar outflows come from the interaction between the wind from a forming star and the ambient gas. However, it is still unclear how the interaction takes place. In this work, we theoretically investigate the possibility that the outflow results from interaction between the wind and the ambient gas in the form of turbulent entrainment. In contrast to the previous models, turbulent motion of the ambient gas around the protostar is taken into account. In our model, t…

We present 12CO (J=2-1) sensitive molecular line and 1.3 mm continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) of the bipolar outflow associated with the young star located in the Bok globule known as CB 26. The SMA observations were carried out in its extended configuration allowing us to study the kinematics and structure of the outflow with about 1 arcsec or 140 au resolution. We find that the dusty and edge-on circumstellar disk related with the outflow has an projected spatial (deconvolved) size of 196 au x 42 au with a total (gas and dust) mass of 0.031 Msun. We estimated a d…
We perform simulations to study the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) radiation and wind feedback on the properties of slowly rotating accretion flow at parsec scale. We find that when only radiative feedback is considered, outflows can be produced by the radiation pressure due to Thomson scattering. The mass flux of outflow is comparable to that of inflow. Although strong outflow is present, the luminosity of AGN can be easily super-Eddington. When wind feedback is also taken into account, the mass flux of outflow does not change much. Consequently, the luminosity of the central AGN ca…
During star formation, the accretion disk drives fast MHD winds which usually contain two components, a collimated jet and a radially distributed wide-angle wind. These winds entrain the surrounding ambient gas producing molecular outflows. We report recent observation of 12CO (2-1) emission of the HH 46/47 molecular outflow by the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array, in which we identify multiple wide-angle outflowing shell structures in both the blue and red-shifted outflow lobes. These shells are highly coherent in position-position-velocity space, extending to >40-50 km/s in velo…
Large-scale, broad outflows are common in active galaxies. In systems where star formation coexists with an AGN, it is unclear yet the role that both play on driving the outflows. In this work we present three-dimensional radiative-cooling MHD simulations of the formation of these outflows, considering the feedback from both the AGN and supernovae-driven winds. We find that a large-opening-angle AGN wind develops fountain structures that make the expanding gas to fall back. Furthermore, it exhausts the gas near the nuclear region, extinguishing star formation and accretion within a few 100.000…
The Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS17020+4544 is one of the few AGN where a galaxy-scale energy-conserving outflow was revealed. This paper reports on NOEMA observations addressed to constrain the spatial scale of the CO emission in outflow. The molecular outflowing gas is resolved in five components tracing approaching and receding gas, all located at a distance of 2-3~kpc on the West and East side of the active nucleus. This high velocity gas (up to v_out=~1900 km/s) is not coincident with the rotation pattern of the CO gas in the host galaxy disk. The estimated mass outflow rate shows tha…
The origin of narrow line region (NLR) outflows remains unknown. In this paper, we explore the scenario in which these outflows are circumnuclear clouds driven by energetic accretion disk winds. We choose the well-studied nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 as an example. By performing 3D hydrodynamical simulations, we are able to reproduce the radial distributions of velocity, mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of NLR outflows in the inner 100 pc deduced from spatial resolved spectroscopic observations. The demanded kinetic luminosity of disk winds is about two orders of magnitude higher tha…
An extended XMM-Newton observation of the luminous narrow line Seyfert galaxy PG 1211+143 in 2014 has revealed a more complex highly ionized, high velocity outflow. The detection of previously unresolved spectral structure in Fe K absorption finds a second outflow velocity component of the highly ionized wind, with an outflow velocity of v~0.066+/-0.003c, in addition to a still higher velocity outflow of v~0.129+/-0.002c consistent with that first seen in 2001. We note that chaotic accretion, consisting of many prograde and retrograde events, offers an intriguing explanation of the dual veloci…

Kinematic signatures of the jet, winds, multicavities, and episodic shells arising in the unified model of bipolar outflows developed in Shang et al.\ (2020), in which an outflow forms by radially directed, wide-angle toroidally magnetized winds interacting with magnetized isothermal toroids, are extracted in the form of position--velocity diagrams. Elongated outflow lobes, driven by magnetized winds and their interplay with the environment, are dominated by extended bubble structures with mixing layers beyond the conventional thin-shell models. The axial cylindrically stratified density jet c…
We present a detailed analysis of XMM-Newton X-ray spectra of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. We find robust evidence for a multi-phase, ultra-fast outflow, traced by four separate components in the grating spectrum. One component has high column density and ionization state, and is outflowing at 0.15c. The other three wind components have lower temperature, lower column density, and have outflow velocities 0.08c. This wind structure is strikingly similar to that found in IRAS 17020+4544, suggesting that stratified winds may be a common feature of ultra-fast outflows. Such structure…
Massive protostars attain high luminosities as they are actively accreting and the radiation pressure exerted on the gas in the star's atmosphere may launch isotropic high-velocity winds. These winds will collide with the surrounding gas producing shock-heated ($T\sim 10^7$ K) tenuous gas that adiabatically expands and pushes on the dense gas that may otherwise be accreted. We present a suite of 3D radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the collapse of massive prestellar cores and include radiative feedback from the stellar and dust-reprocessed radiation fields, collimated outflows, and,…
We perform a sequence of 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the outflow-core interaction for a massive protostar forming via collapse of an initial cloud core of $60~{M_\odot}$. This allows us to characterize the properties of disk wind driven outflows from massive protostars, which can allow testing of different massive star formation theories. It also enables us to assess quantitatively the impact of outflow feedback on protostellar core morphology and overall star formation efficiency. We find that the opening angle of the flow increases with increasing protostellar mass, in agreem…
We recently used hydro-chemical simulations to demonstrate that molecular outflows observed in luminous quasars can be explained by molecule formation within the AGN wind. However, these simulations cover a limited parameter space, due to their computational cost. We have therefore developed an analytic model to follow cooling in the shocked ISM layer of an AGN wind. We explore different ambient densities ($1-10^{4} \, \rm{cm}^{-3}$), density profile slopes ($0-1.5$), AGN luminosities ($10^{44}-10^{47} \, \rm{erg} \, \rm{s}^{-1}$), and metallicities ($0.1-3 \rm{Z}_{\odot}$). The swept up gas m…
