Existing computer vision and object detection methods strongly rely on neural networks and deep learning. This active research area is used for applications such as autonomous driving, aerial photography, protection, and monitoring. Futuristic object detection methods rely on rectangular, boundary boxes drawn over an object to accurately locate its location. The modern object recognition algorithms, however, are vulnerable to multiple factors, such as illumination, occlusion, viewing angle, or camera rotation as well as cost. Therefore, deep learning-based object recognition will significantly increase the recognition speed and compatible external interference. In this study, we use convolutional neural networks (CNN) to recognize items, the neural networks have the advantages of end-to-end, sparse relation, and sharing weights. This article aims to classify the name of the various object based on the position of an object's detected box. Instead, under different distances, we can get recognition results with different confidence. Through this study, we find that this model's accuracy through recognition is mainly influenced by the proportion of objects and the number of samples. When we have a small proportion of an object on camera, then we get higher recognition accuracy; if we have a much small number of samples, we can get greater accuracy in recognition. The epidemic has a great impact on the world economy where designing a cheaper object recognition system is the need of time.
Building facial analysis systems that generalize to extreme variations in lighting and facial expressions is a challenging problem that can potentially be alleviated using natural-looking synthetic data. Towards that, we propose LEGAN, a novel synthesis framework that leverages perceptual quality judgments for jointly manipulating lighting and expressions in face images, without requiring paired training data. LEGAN disentangles the lighting and expression subspaces and performs transformations in the feature space before upscaling to the desired output image. The fidelity of the synthetic ima…
We present four different robust transfer learning and data augmentation strategies for robust mobile scene recognition. By training three mobile-ready (EfficientNetB0, MobileNetV2, MobileNetV3) and two large-scale baseline (VGG16, ResNet50) convolutional neural network architectures on the widely available Event8, Scene15, Stanford40, and MIT67 datasets, we show the generalization ability of our transfer learning strategies. Furthermore, we tested the robustness of our transfer learning strategies under viewpoint and lighting changes using the KTH-Idol2 database. Also, the impact of inference…

The performance of modern face recognition systems is a function of the dataset on which they are trained. Most datasets are largely biased toward "near-frontal" views with benign lighting conditions, negatively effecting recognition performance on images that do not meet these criteria. The proposed approach demonstrates how a baseline training set can be augmented to increase pose and lighting variability using semi-synthetic images with simulated pose and lighting conditions. The semi-synthetic images are generated using a fast and robust 3-d shape estimation and rendering pipeline which in…

Computational surface modeling that underlies material recognition has transitioned from reflectance modeling using in-lab controlled radiometric measurements to image-based representations based on internet-mined single-view images captured in the scene. We take a middle-ground approach for material recognition that takes advantage of both rich radiometric cues and flexible image capture. A key concept is differential angular imaging, where small angular variations in image capture enables angular-gradient features for an enhanced appearance representation that improves recognition. We build …

A major challenge in place recognition for autonomous driving is to be robust against appearance changes due to short-term (e.g., weather, lighting) and long-term (seasons, vegetation growth, etc.) environmental variations. A promising solution is to continuously accumulate images to maintain an adequate sample of the conditions and incorporate new changes into the place recognition decision. However, this demands a place recognition technique that is scalable on an ever growing dataset. To this end, we propose a novel place recognition technique that can be efficiently retrained and compresse…

The recent availability of low-power neural accelerator hardware, combined with improvements in end-to-end neural facial recognition algorithms provides, enabling technology for on-device facial authentication. The present research work examines the effects of directional lighting on a State-of-Art(SoA) neural face recognizer. A synthetic re-lighting technique is used to augment data samples due to the lack of public data-sets with sufficient directional lighting variations. Top lighting and its variants (top-left, top-right) are found to have minimal effect on accuracy, while bottom-left or b…
Self-driving vehicles have expanded dramatically over the last few years. Udacity has release a dataset containing, among other data, a set of images with the steering angle captured during driving. The Udacity challenge aimed to predict steering angle based on only the provided images. We explore two different models to perform high quality prediction of steering angles based on images using different deep learning techniques including Transfer Learning, 3D CNN, LSTM and ResNet. If the Udacity challenge was still ongoing, both of our models would have placed in the top ten of all entries.

2D face analysis techniques, such as face landmarking, face recognition and face verification, are reasonably dependent on illumination conditions which are usually uncontrolled and unpredictable in the real world. An illumination robust preprocessing method thus remains a significant challenge in reliable face analysis. In this paper we propose a novel approach for improving lighting normalization through building the underlying reflectance model which characterizes interactions between skin surface, lighting source and camera sensor, and elaborates the formation of face color appearance. Deep face recognition (FR) has achieved significantly high accuracy on several challenging datasets and fosters successful real-world applications, even showing high robustness to the illumination variation that is usually regarded as a main threat to the FR system. However, in the real world, illumination variation caused by diverse lighting conditions cannot be fully covered by the limited face dataset. In this paper, we study the threat of lighting against FR from a new angle, i.e., adversarial attack, and identify a new task, i.e., adversarial relighting. Given a face image, adversarial re…
Even though face recognition in frontal view and normal lighting condition works very well, the performance degenerates sharply in extreme conditions. Recently there are many work dealing with pose and illumination problems, respectively. However both the lighting and pose variation will always be encountered at the same time. Accordingly we propose an end-to-end face recognition method to deal with pose and illumination simultaneously based on convolutional networks where the discriminative nonlinear features that are invariant to pose and illumination are extracted. Normally the global struc…

The recognition of color texture under varying lighting conditions is still an open issue. Several features have been proposed for this purpose, ranging from traditional statistical descriptors to features extracted with neural networks. Still, it is not completely clear under what circumstances a feature performs better than the others. In this paper we report an extensive comparison of old and new texture features, with and without a color normalization step, with a particular focus on how they are affected by small and large variation in the lighting conditions. The evaluation is performed …

In this work, we focus on outdoor lighting estimation by aggregating individual noisy estimates from images, exploiting the rich image information from wide-angle cameras and/or temporal image sequences. Photographs inherently encode information about the scene's lighting in the form of shading and shadows. Recovering the lighting is an inverse rendering problem and as that ill-posed. Recent work based on deep neural networks has shown promising results for single image lighting estimation, but suffers from robustness. We tackle this problem by combining lighting estimates from several image v…

This work presents a method to predict a geometric surface image from a photograph to assist in image recognition. To recognize objects, several images from different conditions are required for training a model or fine-tuning a pre-trained model. In this work, a geometric surface image is introduced as a better representation than its color image counterpart to overcome lighting conditions. The surface image is predicted from a color image. To do so, the geometric surface image together with its color photographs are firstly trained with Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) model. The traine…
Natural images are generated under many factors, including shape, pose, illumination etc. Most existing ConvNets formulate object recognition from natural images as a single task classification problem, and attempt to learn features useful for object categories, but invariant to other factors of variation as much as possible. These architectures do not explicitly learn other factors, like pose and lighting, instead, they usually discard them by pooling and normalization. In this work, we take the opposite approach: we train ConvNets for object recognition by retaining other factors (pose in ou…
Recognition of identity documents using mobile devices has become a topic of a wide range of computer vision research. The portfolio of methods and algorithms for solving such tasks as face detection, document detection and rectification, text field recognition, and other, is growing, and the scarcity of datasets has become an important issue. One of the openly accessible datasets for evaluating such methods is MIDV-500, containing video clips of 50 identity document types in various conditions. However, the variability of capturing conditions in MIDV-500 did not address some of the key issues…
This work details Sighthounds fully automated license plate detection and recognition system. The core technology of the system is built using a sequence of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) interlaced with accurate and efficient algorithms. The CNNs are trained and fine-tuned so that they are robust under different conditions (e.g. variations in pose, lighting, occlusion, etc.) and can work across a variety of license plate templates (e.g. sizes, backgrounds, fonts, etc). For quantitative analysis, we show that our system outperforms the leading license plate detection and recognition…
In this paper we present architectures based on deep neural nets for gesture recognition in videos, which are invariant to local scaling. We amalgamate autoencoder and predictor architectures using an adaptive weighting scheme coping with a reduced size labeled dataset, while enriching our models from enormous unlabeled sets. We further improve robustness to lighting conditions by introducing a new adaptive filer based on temporal local scale normalization. We provide superior results over known methods, including recent reported approaches based on neural nets.

This paper examines use of dynamic probabilistic networks (DPN) for human action recognition. The actions of lifting objects and walking in the room, sitting in the room and neutral standing pose were used for testing the classification. The research used the dynamic interrelation between various different regions of interest (ROI) on the human body (face, body, arms, legs) and the time series based events related to the these ROIs. This dynamic links are then used to recognize the human behavioral aspects in the scene. First a model is developed to identify the human activities in an indoor s…

Group emotion recognition in the wild is a challenging problem, due to the unstructured environments in which everyday life pictures are taken. Some of the obstacles for an effective classification are occlusions, variable lighting conditions, and image quality. In this work we present a solution based on a novel combination of deep neural networks and Bayesian classifiers. The neural network works on a bottom-up approach, analyzing emotions expressed by isolated faces. The Bayesian classifier estimates a global emotion integrating top-down features obtained through a scene descriptor. In orde…

We introduce N-ImageNet, a large-scale dataset targeted for robust, fine-grained object recognition with event cameras. The dataset is collected using programmable hardware in which an event camera consistently moves around a monitor displaying images from ImageNet. N-ImageNet serves as a challenging benchmark for event-based object recognition, due to its large number of classes and samples. We empirically show that pretraining on N-ImageNet improves the performance of event-based classifiers and helps them learn with few labeled data. In addition, we present several variants of N-ImageNet to…
This letter presents a novel framework termed DistSTN for the task of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR). In contrast to the conventional SAR ATR algorithms, DistSTN considers a more challenging practical scenario for non-cooperative targets whose aspect angles for training are incomplete and limited in a partial range while those of testing samples are unlimited. To address this issue, instead of learning the pose invariant features, DistSTN newly involves an elaborated feature disentangling model to separate the learned pose factors of a SAR target from the ide…

Face detection is an important first step before face verification and recognition. In unconstrained settings it is still an open challenge because of the variation in pose, lighting, scale, background and location. However, for the purposes of verification we can have a control on background and location. Images are primarily captured in places such as the entrance to a sensitive building, in front of a door or some location where the background does not change. We present a correlation based face detection algorithm to detect faces in such settings, where we control the location, and leave l…

Although face recognition systems have achieved impressive performance in recent years, the low-resolution face recognition (LRFR) task remains challenging, especially when the LR faces are captured under non-ideal conditions, as is common in surveillance-based applications. Faces captured in such conditions are often contaminated by blur, nonuniform lighting, and nonfrontal face pose. In this paper, we analyze face recognition techniques using data captured under low-quality conditions in the wild. We provide a comprehensive analysis of experimental results for two of the most important appli…
A wealth of angle problems occur when facial recognition is performed: At present, the feature extraction network presents eigenvectors with large differences between the frontal face and profile face recognition of the same person in many cases. For this reason, the state-of-the-art facial recognition network will use multiple samples for the same target to ensure that eigenvector differences caused by angles are ignored during training. However, there is another solution available, which is to generate frontal face images with profile face images before recognition. In this paper, we propose…
There are several confounding factors that can reduce the accuracy of gait recognition systems. These factors can reduce the distinctiveness, or alter the features used to characterise gait, they include variations in clothing, lighting, pose and environment, such as the walking surface. Full invariance to all confounding factors is challenging in the absence of high-quality labelled training data. We introduce a simulation-based methodology and a subject-specific dataset which can be used for generating synthetic video frames and sequences for data augmentation. With this methodology, we gene…

Gait recognition has proven to be effective for long-distance human recognition. But view variance of gait features would change human appearance greatly and reduce its performance. Most existing gait datasets usually collect data with a dozen different angles, or even more few. Limited view angles would prevent learning better view invariant feature. It can further improve robustness of gait recognition if we collect data with various angles at 1 degree interval. But it is time consuming and labor consuming to collect this kind of dataset. In this paper, we, therefore, introduce a Dense-View …
Visual animal biometrics is rapidly gaining popularity as it enables a non-invasive and cost-effective approach for wildlife monitoring applications. Widespread usage of camera traps has led to large volumes of collected images, making manual processing of visual content hard to manage. In this work, we develop a framework for automatic detection and recognition of individuals in different patterned species like tigers, zebras and jaguars. Most existing systems primarily rely on manual input for localizing the animal, which does not scale well to large datasets. In order to automate the detect…

State-of-the-art face recognition models show impressive accuracy, achieving over 99.8% on Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW) dataset. Such models are trained on large-scale datasets that contain millions of real human face images collected from the internet. Web-crawled face images are severely biased (in terms of race, lighting, make-up, etc) and often contain label noise. More importantly, the face images are collected without explicit consent, raising ethical concerns. To avoid such problems, we introduce a large-scale synthetic dataset for face recognition, obtained by rendering digital face…

Despite great progress in face recognition tasks achieved by deep convolution neural networks (CNNs), these models often face challenges in real world tasks where training images gathered from Internet are different from test images because of different lighting condition, pose and image quality. These factors increase domain discrepancy between training (source domain) and testing (target domain) database and make the learnt models degenerate in application. Meanwhile, due to lack of labeled target data, directly fine-tuning the pre-learnt models becomes intractable and impractical. In this p…
Recognizing the identities of people in everyday photos is still a very challenging problem for machine vision, due to non-frontal faces, changes in clothing, location, lighting and similar. Recent studies have shown that rich relational information between people in the same photo can help in recognizing their identities. In this work, we propose to model the relational information between people as a sequence prediction task. At the core of our work is a novel recurrent network architecture, in which relational information between instances' labels and appearance are modeled jointly. In addi…
The inevitable feature deviation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image due to the special imaging principle (depression angle variation) leads to poor recognition accuracy, especially in few-shot learning (FSL). To deal with this problem, we propose a dense graph prototype network (DGP-Net) to eliminate the feature deviation by learning potential features, and classify by learning feature distribution. The role of the prototype in this model is to solve the problem of large distance between congeneric samples taken due to the contingency of single sampling in FSL, and enhance the robustness …
Real-world image recognition is often challenged by the variability of visual styles including object textures, lighting conditions, filter effects, etc. Although these variations have been deemed to be implicitly handled by more training data and deeper networks, recent advances in image style transfer suggest that it is also possible to explicitly manipulate the style information. Extending this idea to general visual recognition problems, we present Batch-Instance Normalization (BIN) to explicitly normalize unnecessary styles from images. Considering certain style features play an essential…
