A wealth of angle problems occur when facial recognition is performed: At present, the feature extraction network presents eigenvectors with large differences between the frontal face and profile face recognition of the same person in many cases. For this reason, the state-of-the-art facial recognition network will use multiple samples for the same target to ensure that eigenvector differences caused by angles are ignored during training. However, there is another solution available, which is to generate frontal face images with profile face images before recognition. In this paper, we proposed a method of generating frontal faces with image-to-image profile faces based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN).
Generative adversarial networks (GANs)successfully generate high quality data by learning amapping from a latent vector to the data. Various studies assert that the latent space of a GAN is semanticallymeaningful and can be utilized for advanced data analysis and manipulation. To analyze the real data in thelatent space of a GAN, it is necessary to build an inference mapping from the data to the latent vector. Thispaper proposes an effective algorithm to accurately infer the latent vector by utilizing GAN discriminator features. Our primary goal is to increase inference mappingaccuracy with mi…
Recently, a series of algorithms have been explored for GAN compression, which aims to reduce tremendous computational overhead and memory usages when deploying GANs on resource-constrained edge devices. However, most of the existing GAN compression work only focuses on how to compress the generator, while fails to take the discriminator into account. In this work, we revisit the role of discriminator in GAN compression and design a novel generator-discriminator cooperative compression scheme for GAN compression, termed GCC. Within GCC, a selective activation discriminator automatically select…

Generative adversarial network (GAN) for image super-resolution (SR) has attracted enormous interests in recent years. However, the GAN-based SR methods only use image discriminator to distinguish SR images and high-resolution (HR) images. Image discriminator fails to discriminate images accurately since image features cannot be fully expressed. In this paper, we design a new GAN-based SR framework GAN-IMC which includes generator, image discriminator, morphological component discriminator and color discriminator. The combination of multiple feature discriminators improves the accuracy of imag…
Despite excellent performance in image generation, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are notorious for its requirements of enormous storage and intensive computation. Training of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) is notoriously fragile, requiring to maintain a careful balance between the generator and the discriminator in order to perform well. To mitigate this issue we introduce a new regularization technique - progressive augmentation of GANs (PA-GAN). The key idea is to gradually increase the task difficulty of the discriminator by progressively augmenting its input or feature space, thus enabling continuous learning of the generator. We show that the proposed progressive augmentation preserves the original GAN objective, does not compromise the dis…

Text-to-image synthesis aims to generate a photo-realistic image from a given natural language description. Previous works have made significant progress with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Nonetheless, it is still hard to generate intact objects or clear textures (Fig 1). To address this issue, we propose Feature-Aware Generative Adversarial Network (FA-GAN) to synthesize a high-quality image by integrating two techniques: a self-supervised discriminator and a feature-aware loss. First, we design a self-supervised discriminator with an auxiliary decoder so that the discriminator can …

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have emerged as useful generative models, which are capable of implicitly learning data distributions of arbitrarily complex dimensions. However, the training of GANs is empirically well-known for being highly unstable and sensitive. The loss functions of both the discriminator and generator concerning their parameters tend to oscillate wildly during training. Different loss functions have been proposed to stabilize the training and improve the quality of images generated. In this paper, we perform an empirical study on the impact of several loss function…

We introduce effective training algorithms for Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) to alleviate mode collapse and gradient vanishing. In our system, we constrain the generator by an Autoencoder (AE). We propose a formulation to consider the reconstructed samples from AE as "real" samples for the discriminator. This couples the convergence of the AE with that of the discriminator, effectively slowing down the convergence of discriminator and reducing gradient vanishing. Importantly, we propose two novel distance constraints to improve the generator. First, we propose a latent-data distance co…

This paper observes that there is an issue of high frequencies missing in the discriminator of standard GAN, and we reveal it stems from downsampling layers employed in the network architecture. This issue makes the generator lack the incentive from the discriminator to learn high-frequency content of data, resulting in a significant spectrum discrepancy between generated images and real images. Since the Fourier transform is a bijective mapping, we argue that reducing this spectrum discrepancy would boost the performance of GANs. To this end, we introduce SSD-GAN, an enhancement of GANs to al…
Recent methods for conditional image generation benefit from dense supervision such as segmentation label maps to achieve high-fidelity. However, it is rarely explored to employ dense supervision for unconditional image generation. Here we explore the efficacy of dense supervision in unconditional generation and find generator feature maps can be an alternative of cost-expensive semantic label maps. From our empirical evidences, we propose a new generator-guided discriminator regularization(GGDR) in which the generator feature maps supervise the discriminator to have rich semantic representati…
In this work, we propose a method for training distributed GAN with sequential temporary discriminators. We apply our proposed method to learn a self-adaptive generator with a series of local discriminators from multiple data centers. We show our design of loss function indeed learns the correct distribution with provable guarantees. The empirical experiments show that our approach is capable of generating synthetic data which is pract…

Unsupervised image-to-image translation is a central task in computer vision. Current translation frameworks will abandon the discriminator once the training process is completed. This paper contends a novel role of the discriminator by reusing it for encoding the images of the target domain. The proposed architecture, termed as NICE-GAN, exhibits two advantageous patterns over previous approaches: First, it is more compact since no independent encoding component is required; Second, this plug-in encoder is directly trained by the adversary loss, making it more informative and trained more eff…
This paper explores conditional image generation with a One-Vs-All classifier based on the Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Instead of the real/fake discriminator used in vanilla GANs, we propose to extend the discriminator to a One-Vs-All classifier (GAN-OVA) that can distinguish each input data to its category label. Specifically, we feed certain additional information as conditions to the generator and take the discriminator as a One-Vs-All classifier to identify each conditional category. Our model can be applied to different divergence or distances used to define the objective func…

Generative adversarial nets (GANs) have been remarkably successful at learning to sample from distributions specified by a given dataset, particularly if the given dataset is reasonably large compared to its dimensionality. However, given limited data, classical GANs have struggled, and strategies like output-regularization, data-augmentation, use of pre-trained models and pruning have been shown to lead to improvements. Notably, the applicability of these strategies is 1) often constrained to particular settings, e.g., availability of a pretrained GAN; or 2) increases training time, e.g., whe…

Recent works in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are actively revisiting various data augmentation techniques as an effective way to prevent discriminator overfitting. It is still unclear, however, that which augmentations could actually improve GANs, and in particular, how to apply a wider range of augmentations in training. In this paper, we propose a novel way to address these questions by incorporating a recent contrastive representation learning scheme into the GAN discriminator, coined ContraD. This "fusion" enables the discriminators to work with much stronger augmentations withou…

Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved great improvements in single image dehazing and attained much attention in research. Most existing learning-based dehazing methods are not fully end-to-end, which still follow the traditional dehazing procedure: first estimate the medium transmission and the atmospheric light, then recover the haze-free image based on the atmospheric scattering model. However, in practice, due to lack of priors and constraints, it is hard to precisely estimate these intermediate parameters. Inaccurate estimation further degrades the performance of de…

We propose two new techniques for training Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Our objectives are to alleviate mode collapse in GAN and improve the quality of the generated samples. First, we propose neighbor embedding, a manifold learning-based regularization to explicitly retain local structures of latent samples in the generated samples. This prevents generator from producing nearly identical data samples from different latent samples, and reduces mode collapse. We propose an inverse t-SNE regularizer to achieve this. Second, we propose a new technique, gradient matching, to align the d…
This paper introduces a novel approach for unsupervised object co-localization using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Our important finding is that high image diversity of GAN, which is a main goal in GAN research, is ironically disadvantageous for object localization, because such discriminators focus not o…

To mitigate the annotation burden, this paper proposes a self-ensembling generative adversarial network (SE-GAN) exploiting cross-domain data for semantic segmentation. In SE-GAN, a teacher network and a student network constitute a self-ensembling model for generating semantic segmentation maps, which together with a discriminator, forms a G…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are pow- erful generative models based on providing feed- back to a generative network via a discriminator network. However, the discriminator usually as- sesses individual samples. This prevents the dis- criminator from accessing global distributional statistics of generated samples, and often leads to mode dropping: the generator models only part of the target distribution. We propose to feed the discriminator with mixed batches of true and fake samples, and train it to predict the ratio of true samples in the batch. The latter score does not depend on …

Generative adversarial nets (GANs) are a promising technique for modeling a distribution from samples. It is however well known that GAN training suffers from instability due to the nature of its maximin formulation. In this paper, we explore ways to tackle the instability problem by dualizing the discriminator. We start from linear discriminators in which case conjugate duality provides a mechanism to reformulate the saddle point objective into a maximization problem, such that both the generator and the discriminator of this 'dualing GAN' act in concert. We then demonstrate how to extend thi…
Current approaches have made great progress on image-to-image translation tasks benefiting from the success of image synthesis methods especially generative adversarial networks (GANs). GANs involve training two networks in an adversarial game, where each network's task depends on its adversary. Recently, several works have framed GAN training as an online or continual learning problem. We focus on the discriminator, which must perform classification under an (adversarially) shifting data distribution. When trained on sequential tasks, neural networks exhibit \emph{forgetting}. For GANs, discriminator forgetting leads to training instability. To counter forgetting, we encourage the discriminator to maintain useful representations by adding a self-supervision. Conditional GANs…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have shown outstanding performance on a wide range of problems in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning, but often require numerous training data and heavy computational resources. To tackle this issue, several methods introduce a transfer learning technique in GAN training. They, however, are either prone to overfitting or limited to learning small distribution shifts. In this paper, we show that simple fine-tuning of GANs with frozen lower layers of the discriminator performs surprisingly well. This simple baseline, FreezeD, significantly outp…

Conditional GANs are widely used in translating an image from one category to another. Meaningful conditions to GANs provide greater flexibility and control over the nature of the target domain synthetic data. Existing conditional GANs commonly encode target domain label information as hard-coded categorical vectors in the form of 0s and 1s. The major drawbacks of such representations are inability to encode the high-order semantic information of target categories and their relative dependencies. We propose a novel end-to-end learning framework with Graph Convolutional Networks to learn the at…
