We propose a simple, yet powerful approach for unsupervised object segmentation in videos. We introduce an objective function whose minimum represents the mask of the main salient object over the input sequence. It only relies on independent image features and optical flows, which can be obtained using off-the-shelf self-supervised methods. It scales with the length of the sequence with no need for superpixels or sparsification, and it generalizes to different datasets without any specific training. This objective function can actually be derived from a form of spectral clustering applied to the entire video. Our method achieves on-par performance with the state of the art on standard benchmarks (DAVIS2016, SegTrack-v2, FBMS59), while being conceptually and practically much simpler. Code is available at https://ponimatkin.github.io/ssl-vos.
We propose an unsupervised segmentation framework for StyleGAN generated objects. We build on two main observations. First, the features generated by StyleGAN hold valuable information that can be utilized towards training segmentation networks. Second, the foreground and background can often be treated to be largely independent and be composited in different ways. For our solution, we propose to augment the StyleGAN2 generator architecture with a segmentation branch and to split the generator into a foreground and background network. This enables us to generate soft segmentation masks for the…
In this paper we address the problem of automatically discovering atomic actions in unsupervised manner from instructional videos, which are rarely annotated with atomic actions. We present an unsupervised approach to learn atomic actions of structured human tasks from a variety of instructional videos based on a sequential stochastic autoregressive model for temporal segmentation of videos. This learns to represent and discover the sequential relationship between different atomic actions of the task, and which provides automatic and unsupervised self-labeling.
We introduce a new architecture for unsupervised object-centric representation learning and multi-object detection and segmentation, which uses a translation-equivariant attention mechanism to predict the coordinates of the objects present in the scene and to associate a feature vector to each object. A transformer encoder handles occlusions and redundant detections, and a convolutional autoencoder is in charge of background reconstruction. We show that this architecture significantly outperforms the state of the art on complex synthetic benchmarks.
Automatic segmentation of vestibular schwannoma (VS) and cochlea from magnetic resonance imaging can facilitate VS treatment planning. Unsupervised segmentation methods have shown promising results without requiring the time-consuming and laborious manual labeling process. In this paper, we present an approach for VS and cochlea segmentation in an unsupervised domain adaptation setting. Specifically, we first develop a cross-site cross-modality unpaired image translation strategy to enrich the diversity of the synthesized data. Then, we devise a rule-based offline augmentation technique to fur…
We address the problem of discovering part segmentations of articulated objects without supervision. In contrast to keypoints, part segmentations provide information about part localizations on the level of individual pixels. Capturing both locations and semantics, they are an attractive target for supervised learning approaches. However, large annotation costs limit the scalability of supervised algorithms to other object categories than humans. Unsupervised approaches potentially allow to use much more data at a lower cost. Most existing unsupervised approaches focus on learning abstract rep…

Co-part segmentation is an important problem in computer vision for its rich applications. We propose an unsupervised learning approach for co-part segmentation from images. For the training stage, we leverage motion information embedded in videos and explicitly extract latent representations to segment meaningful object parts. More importantly, we introduce a dual procedure of part-assembly to form a closed loop with part-segmentation, enabling an effective self-supervision. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with a host of extensive experiments, ranging from human bodies, hands…

One major technique debt in video object segmentation is to label the object masks for training instances. As a result, we propose to prepare inexpensive, yet high quality pseudo ground truth corrected with motion cue for video object segmentation training. Our method conducts semantic segmentation using instance segmentation networks and, then, selects the segmented object of interest as the pseudo ground truth based on the motion information. Afterwards, the pseudo ground truth is exploited to finetune the pretrained objectness network to facilitate object segmentation in the remaining frame…
Medical image segmentation is a relevant task as it serves as the first step for several diagnosis processes, thus it is indispensable in clinical usage. Whilst major success has been reported using supervised techniques, they assume a large and well-representative labelled set. This is a strong assumption in the medical domain where annotations are expensive, time-consuming, and inherent to human bias. To address this problem, unsupervised techniques have been proposed in the literature yet it is still an open problem due to the difficulty of learning any transformation pattern. In this work,…
We consider the problem of segmenting a biomedical image into anatomical regions of interest. We specifically address the frequent scenario where we have no paired training data that contains images and their manual segmentations. Instead, we employ unpaired segmentation images to build an anatomical prior. Critically these segmentations can be derived from imaging data from a different dataset and imaging modality than the current task. We introduce a generative probabilistic model that employs the learned prior through a convolutional neural network to compute segmentations in an unsupervise…
Unsupervised object discovery aims to localize objects in images, while removing the dependence on annotations required by most deep learning-based methods. To address this problem, we propose a fully unsupervised, bottom-up approach, for multiple objects discovery. The proposed approach is a two-stage framework. First, instances of object parts are segmented by using the intra-image similarity between self-supervised local features. The second step merges and filters the object parts to form complete object instances. The latter is performed by two CNN models that capture semantic information…
Empowered by large datasets, e.g., ImageNet, unsupervised learning on large-scale data has enabled significant advances for classification tasks. However, whether the large-scale unsupervised semantic segmentation can be achieved remains unknown. There are two major challenges: i) we need a large-scale benchmark for assessing algorithms; ii) we need to develop methods to simultaneously learn category and shape representation in an unsupervised manner. In this work, we propose a new problem of large-scale unsupervised semantic segmentation (LUSS) with a newly created benchmark dataset to help t…
Simulators can efficiently generate large amounts of labeled synthetic data with perfect supervision for hard-to-label tasks like semantic segmentation. However, they introduce a domain gap that severely hurts real-world performance. We propose to use self-supervised monocular depth estimation as a proxy task to bridge this gap and improve sim-to-real unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA). Our Geometric Unsupervised Domain Adaptation method (GUDA) learns a domain-invariant representation via a multi-task objective combining synthetic semantic supervision with real-world geometric constraints on…
Motion, measured via optical flow, provides a powerful cue to discover and learn objects in images and videos. However, compared to using appearance, it has some blind spots, such as the fact that objects become invisible if they do not move. In this work, we propose an approach that combines the strengths of motion-based and appearance-based segmentation. We propose to supervise an image segmentation network with the pretext task of predicting regions that are likely to contain simple motion patterns, and thus likely to correspond to objects. As the model only uses a single image as input, we…

Image segmentation, one of the most critical vision tasks, has been studied for many years. Most of the early algorithms are unsupervised methods, which use hand-crafted features to divide the image into many regions. Recently, owing to the great success of deep learning technology, CNNs based methods show superior performance in image segmentation. However, these methods rely on a large number of human annotations, which are expensive to collect. In this paper, we propose a deep unsupervised method for image segmentation, which contains the following two stages. First, a Superpixelwise Autoen…

Shape information is a strong and valuable prior in segmenting organs in medical images. However, most current deep learning based segmentation algorithms have not taken shape information into consideration, which can lead to bias towards texture. We aim at modeling shape explicitly and using it to help medical image segmentation. Previous methods proposed Variational Autoencoder (VAE) based models to learn the distribution of shape for a particular organ and used it to automatically evaluate the quality of a segmentation prediction by fitting it into the learned shape distribution. Based on w…
Unsupervised image segmentation is an important task in many real-world scenarios where labelled data is of scarce availability. In this paper we propose a novel approach that harnesses recent advances in unsupervised learning using a combination of Mutual Information Maximization (MIM), Neural Superpixel Segmentation and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) in an end-to-end manner, an approach that has not been explored yet. We take advantage of the compact representation of superpixels and combine it with GNNs in order to learn strong and semantically meaningful representations of images. Specifical…

In this paper, we propose an unsupervised method for hyperspectral remote sensing image segmentation. The method exploits the mean-shift clustering algorithm that takes as input a preliminary hyperspectral superpixels segmentation together with the spectral pixel information. The proposed method does not require the number of segmentation classes as input parameter, and it does not exploit any a-priori knowledge about the type of land-cover or land-use to be segmented (e.g. water, vegetation, building etc.). Experiments on Salinas, SalinasA, Pavia Center and Pavia University datasets are carri…

Earth observation techniques are applied to varieties of applications and since classes vary widely depending on the applications, therefore, domain knowledge is often required to label Earth observation images, impeding availability of labeled training data in many Earth observation applications. To tackle these challenges, in this paper we propose an unsupervised semantic segmentation method that can be trained using j…

Surgical instrument segmentation is a key component in developing context-aware operating rooms. Existing works on this task heavily rely on the supervision of a large amount of labeled data, which involve laborious and expensive human efforts. In contrast, a more affordable unsupervised approach is developed in this paper. To train our model, we first generate anchors as pseudo labels for instruments and background tissues respectively by fusing coarse handcrafted cues. Then a semantic diffusion loss is proposed to resolve the ambiguity in the generated anchors via the feature correlation bet…
We address Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation (UVOS), the task of automatically generating accurate pixel masks for salient objects in a video sequence and of tracking these objects consistently through time, without any input about which objects should be tracked. Towards solving this task, we present UnOVOST (Unsupervised Offline Video Object Segmentation and Tracking) as a simple and generic algorithm which is able to track and segment a large variety of objects. This algorithm builds up tracks in a number stages, first grouping segments into short tracklets that are spatio-temporally c…
Despite recent advances in the field of supervised deep learning for text line segmentation, unsupervised deep learning solutions are beginning to gain popularity. In this paper, we present an unsupervised deep learning method that embeds document image patches to a compact Euclidean space where distances correspond to a coarse text line pattern similarity. Once this space has been produced, text line segmentation can be easily implemented using standard techniques with the embedded feature vectors. To train the model, we extract random pairs of document image patches with the assumption that …
Deep learning has not been routinely employed for semantic segmentation of seabed environment for synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) imagery due to the implicit need of abundant training data such methods necessitate. Abundant training data, specifically pixel-level labels for all images, is usually not available for SAS imagery due to the complex logistics (e.g., diver survey, chase boat, precision position information) needed for obtaining accurate ground-truth. Many hand-crafted feature based algorithms have been proposed to segment SAS in an unsupervised fashion. However, there is still room f…
Segmenting handwritten document images into regions with homogeneous patterns is an important pre-processing step for many document images analysis tasks. Hand-labeling data to train a deep learning model for layout analysis requires significant human effort. In this paper, we present an unsupervised deep learning method for page segmentation, which revokes the need for annotated images. A siamese neural network is trained to differentiate between patches using their measurable properties such as number of foreground pixels, and average component height and width. The network is trained that s…
Although deep neural networks have achieved remarkable results for the task of semantic segmentation, they usually fail to generalize towards new domains, especially when performing synthetic-to-real adaptation. Such domain shift is particularly noticeable along class boundaries, invalidating one of the main goals of semantic segmentation that consists in obtaining sharp segmentation masks. In this work, we specifically address this core problem in the context of Unsupervised Domain Adaptation and present a novel low-level adaptation strategy that allows us to obtain sharp predictions. This paper presents a "learning to learn" approach to figure-ground image segmentation. By exploring webly-abundant images of specific visual effects, our method can effectively learn the visual-effect internal representations in an unsupervised manner and uses this knowledge to differentiate the figure from the ground in an image. Specifically, we formulate the meta-learning process as a compositional image editing task that learns to imitate a certain visual effect and derive the corresponding internal representation. Such a generative process can help instantiate the underlying figure-groun…

We present radiance field propagation (RFP), a novel approach to segmenting objects in 3D during reconstruction given only unlabeled multi-view images of a scene. RFP is derived from emerging neural radiance field-based techniques, which jointly encodes semantics with appearance and geometry. The core of our method is a novel propagation strategy for individual objects' radiance fields with a bidirectional photometric loss, enabling an unsupervised partitioning of a scene into salient or meaningful regions corresponding to different object instances. To better handle complex scenes with multip…
