Despite recent advances in the field of supervised deep learning for text line segmentation, unsupervised deep learning solutions are beginning to gain popularity. In this paper, we present an unsupervised deep learning method that embeds document image patches to a compact Euclidean space where distances correspond to a coarse text line pattern similarity. Once this space has been produced, text line segmentation can be easily implemented using standard techniques with the embedded feature vectors. To train the model, we extract random pairs of document image patches with the assumption that neighbour patches contain a similar coarse trend of text lines, whereas if one of them is rotated, they contain different coarse trends of text lines. Doing well on this task requires the model to learn to recognize the text lines and their salient parts. The benefit of our approach is zero manual labelling effort. We evaluate the method qualitatively and quantitatively on several variants of text line segmentation datasets to demonstrate its effectivity.

Previous feature alignment methods in Unsupervised domain adaptation(UDA) mostly only align global features without considering the mismatch between class-wise features. In this work, we propose a new coarse-to-fine feature alignment method using contrastive learning called CFContra. It draws class-wise features closer than coarse feature alignment or class-wise feature alignment only, therefore improves the model's performance to a great extent. We build it upon one of the most effective methods of UDA called entropy minimization to further improve performance. In particular, to prevent exces…

Deformable image registration is widely utilized in medical image analysis, but most proposed methods fail in the situation of complex deformations. In this paper, we pre-sent a cascaded feature warping network to perform the coarse-to-fine registration. To achieve this, a shared-weights encoder network is adopted to generate the feature pyramids for the unaligned images. The feature warping registration module is then used to estimate the deformation field at each level. The coarse-to-fine manner is implemented by cascading the module from the bottom level to the top level. Furthermore, the m…

Reliably modeling normality and differentiating abnormal appearances from normal cases is a very appealing approach for detecting pathologies in medical images. A plethora of such unsupervised anomaly detection approaches has been made in the medical domain, based on statistical methods, content-based retrieval, clustering and recently also deep learning. Previous approaches towards deep unsupervised anomaly detection model patches of normal anatomy with variants of Autoencoders or GANs, and detect anomalies either as outliers in the learned feature space or from large reconstruction errors. Predictive marker patterns in imaging data are a means to quantify disease and progression, but their identification is challenging, if the underlying biology is poorly understood. Here, we present a method to identify predictive texture patterns in medical images in an unsupervised way. Based on deep clustering networks, we simultaneously encode and cluster medical image patches in a low-dimensional latent space. The resulting clusters serve as features for disease staging, linking them to the underlying disease. We evaluate the method on 70 T1-weighted magnetic resonance images of patients w…

Specifically, an end-to-end coarse-to-fine network architecture consisting of affine and deformable transformations is designed to improve the robustness and achieve end-to-end reg…
Person re-identification (re-ID) is a challenging problem especially when no labels are available for training. Although recent deep re-ID methods have achieved great improvement, it is still difficult to optimize deep re-ID model without annotations in training data. To address this problem, this study introduces a novel approach for unsupervised person re-ID by leveraging virtual and real data. Our approach includes two components: virtual person generation and training of deep re-ID model. For virtual person generation, we learn a person generation model and a camera style transfer model us…
Deep unsupervised hashing has been appreciated in the regime of image retrieval. However, most prior arts failed to detect the semantic components and their relationships behind the images, which makes them lack discriminative power. To make up the defect, we propose a novel Deep Semantic Components Hashing (DSCH), which involves a common sense that an image normally contains a bunch of semantic components with homology and co-occurrence relationships. Based on this prior, DSCH regards the semantic components as latent variables under the Expectation-Maximization framework and designs a two-st…

The essence of unsupervised anomaly detection is to learn the compact distribution of normal samples and detect outliers as anomalies in testing. Meanwhile, the anomalies in real-world are usually subtle and fine-grained in a high-resolution image especially for industrial applications. Towards this end, we propose a novel framework for unsupervised anomaly detection and localization. Our method aims at learning dense and compact distribution from normal images with a coarse-to-fine alignment process. The coarse alignment stage standardizes the pixel-wise position of objects in both image and …
We propose a deep autoencoder with graph topology inference and filtering to achieve compact representations of unorganized 3D point clouds in an unsupervised manner. Many previous works discretize 3D points to voxels and then use lattice-based methods to process and learn 3D spatial information; however, this leads to inevitable discretization errors. In this work, we handle raw 3D points without such compromise. The proposed networks follow the autoencoder framework with a focus on designing the decoder. The encoder adopts similar architectures as in PointNet. The decoder involves three nove…

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated remarkable success in computer vision by supervisedly learning strong visual feature representations. However, training CNNs relies heavily on the availability of exhaustive training data annotations, limiting significantly their deployment and scalability in many application scenarios. In this work, we introduce a generic unsupervised deep learning approach to training deep models without the need for any manual label supervision. Specifically, we progressively discover sample anchored/centred neighbourhoods to reason and learn the u…

Surgical instrument segmentation is a key component in developing context-aware operating rooms. Existing works on this task heavily rely on the supervision of a large amount of labeled data, which involve laborious and expensive human efforts. In contrast, a more affordable unsupervised approach is developed in this paper. To train our model, we first generate anchors as pseudo labels for instruments and background tissues respectively by fusing coarse handcrafted cues. Then a semantic diffusion loss is proposed to resolve the ambiguity in the generated anchors via the feature correlation bet…

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) in semantic segmentation is a fundamental yet promising task relieving the need for laborious annotation works. However, the domain shifts/discrepancies problem in this task compromise the final segmentation performance. Based on our observation, the main causes of the domain shifts are differences in imaging conditions, called image-level domain shifts, and differences in object category configurations called category-level domain shifts. In this paper, we propose a novel UDA pipeline that unifies image-level alignment and category-level feature distributi…

Deep neural network-based semantic segmentation generally requires large-scale cost extensive annotations for training to obtain better performance. To avoid pixel-wise segmentation annotations which are needed for most methods, recently some researchers attempted to use object-level labels (e.g. bounding boxes) or image-level labels (e.g. image categories). In this paper, we propose a novel recursive coarse-to-fine semantic segmentation framework based on only image-level category labels. For each image, an initial coarse mask is first generated by a convolutional neural network-based unsuper…

Traditional feature-based image stitching technologies rely heavily on feature detection quality, often failing to stitch images with few features or low resolution. The learning-based image stitching solutions are rarely studied due to the lack of labeled data, making the supervised methods unreliable. To address the above limitations, we propose an unsupervised deep image stitching framework consisting of two stages: unsupervised coarse image alignment and unsupervised image reconstruction. In the first stage, we design an ablation-based loss to constrain an unsupervised homography network, …

In this study, we develop an unsupervised coarse-to-fine video analysis framework and prototype system to extract a salient object in a video sequence. This framework starts from tracking grid-sampled points along temporal frames, typically using KLT tracking method. The tracking points could be divided into several groups due to their inconsistent movements. At the same time, the SLIC algorithm is extended into 3D space to generate supervoxels. Coarse segmentation is achieved by combining the categorized tracking points and supervoxels of the corresponding frame in the video sequence. Finally…

Unsupervised semantic segmentation aims to discover groupings within and across images that capture object and view-invariance of a category without external supervision. Grouping naturally has levels of granularity, creating ambiguity in unsupervised segmentation. Existing methods avoid this ambiguity and treat it as a factor outside modeling, whereas we embrace it and desire hierarchical grouping consistency for unsupervised segmentation. We approach unsupervised segmentation as a pixel-wise feature learning problem. Our idea is that a good representation shall reveal not just a particular l…

Image registration, the process of aligning two or more images, is the core technique of many (semi-)automatic medical image analysis tasks. Recent studies have shown that deep learning methods, notably convolutional neural networks (ConvNets), can be used for image registration. Thus far training of ConvNets for registration was supervised using predefined example registrations. However, obtaining example registrations is not trivial. To circumvent the need for predefined examples, and thereby to increase convenience of training ConvNets for image registration, we propose the Deep Learning Im…

Unsupervised domain adaptive (UDA) person re-identification (re-ID) is a challenging task due to the missing of labels for the target domain data. To handle this problem, some recent works adopt clustering algorithms to off-line generate pseudo labels, which can then be used as the supervision signal for on-line feature learning in the target domain. However, the off-line generated labels often contain lots of noise that significantly hinders the discriminability of the on-line learned features, and thus limits the final UDA re-ID performance. To this end, we propose a novel approach, called D…

Transfer learning is a proven technique in 2D computer vision to leverage the large amount of data available and achieve high performance with datasets limited in size due to the cost of acquisition or annotation. In 3D, annotation is known to be a costly task; nevertheless, pre-training methods have only recently been investigated. Due to this cost, unsupervised pre-training has been heavily favored. In this work, we tackle the case of real-time 3D semantic segmentation of sparse autonomous driving LiDAR scans. Such datasets have been increasingly released, but each has a unique label set. We…

We further improve the performance by self-training the model on its predictions. Compared to prior work, CutLER is si…

This paper addresses the challenging unsupervised scene flow estimation problem by jointly learning four low-level vision sub-tasks: optical flow $\textbf{F}$, stereo-depth $\textbf{D}$, camera pose $\textbf{P}$ and motion segmentation $\textbf{S}$. Our key insight is that the rigidity of the scene shares the same inherent geometrical structure with object movements and scene depth. Hence, rigidity from $\textbf{S}$ can be inferred by jointly coupling $\textbf{F}$, $\textbf{D}$ and $\textbf{P}$ to achieve more robust estimation. To this end, we propose a novel scene flow framework named EffiSc…
