Efficient and accurate computational methods for dealing with interacting electron problems on a lattice are of broad interest to the condensed matter community. For interacting Hubbard models, we introduce a cluster slave-particle approach that provides significant computational savings with high accuracy for total energies, site occupancies, and interaction energies. Compared to exact benchmarks using density matrix renormalization group for $d$-$p$ Hubbard models, our approach delivers accurate results using two to three orders of magnitude lower computational cost. Our method is based on a novel slave-particle decomposition with an improved description of particle hoppings, and a new density matrix expansion method where the interacting lattice slave-particle problem is then turned into a set of overlapping real-space clusters which are solved self-consistently with appropriate physical matching constraints at shared lattice sites between clusters.
Fermionizing the charge sector and bosonizing the spin part in the SU(2) slave-boson theory, we derive an effective field theory for dynamics of doped holes in the antiferromagnetically correlated spin background, where spin fluctuations are described by an SO(5) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory while dynamics of doped holes is characterized by QED$_{3}$ with a chemical potential term. An important feature of our effective field theory is the coupling term between valance bond fluctuations and doped holes. Considering that valance bond fluctuations are deeply related with monopole excitations o…
An SU(2) slave boson formulation of bond-type spin nematic orders is developed in frustrated ferromagnets, where the spin nematic states are described as the resonating spin-triplet valence bond (RVB) states. The d-vectors of spin-triplet pairing ansatzes play the role of the directors in the bond-type spin quadrupolar states. The low-energy excitations around such spin-triplet RVB ansatzes generally comprise the (potentially massless) gauge bosons, massless Goldstone bosons, and spinon individual excitations. Extending the projective symmetry group argument to the spin-triplet ansatzes, we sh…
The density fluctuation spectrum $N({\bf k},ω)$ is calculated for the t-J model in the low-doping regime using a slave-fermion method for the constrained fermions. The obtained results for $N({\bf k},ω)$ are in good agreement with diagonalization results. The density response is characterized by incoherent, momentum dependent spectral functions reaching up to energies $\sim 8t$ and a low-energy structure at energy $\sim J$ due to transitions in the quasiparticle band. $N({\bf k},ω)$ is shown to lead to a strong renormalization of planar bond-streching and breathing phonon modes with a large ph…
In the present paper, we study a system of doped antiferromagnet in three dimensions at finite temperatures by using the t-J model, a canonical model of strongly-correlated electrons. We employ the slave-fermion representation of electrons in which an electron is described as a composite of a charged spinless holon and a chargeless spinon. We introduce two kinds of U(1) gauge fields on links as auxiliary fields, one describing resonating valence bonds of antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin pairs and the other for nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes of holons and spinons in the ferromagneti…
With extensive variational Monte Carlo simulation, we show that the uniform resonating valence bond state(U-RVB) on square lattice is actually antiferromagnetic long range ordered. The ordered moment is estimated to be $m\approx 0.17$. Finite size scaling analysis on lattice up to lattice size of $50\times 50$ shows that the spin structure factor at the antiferromagnetic ordering wave vector follows perfectly the $\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{q}=(π,π)} \simeq S_{0}+α(1/L)^{5/4}$ behavior, where $L$ is linear scale of the lattice. Such a behavior is quite unexpected from the slave Boson mean field treat…
The Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) can be studied in the infinite U limit by employing the Hubbard X operators to project out the unwanted states. We have already studied this problem employing the cumulant expansion with the hybridization as perturbation, but the probability conservation of the local states (completeness) is not usually satisfied when partial expansions like the Chain Approximation (CHA) are employed. Here we treat the problem by a technique inspired in the mean field approximation of Coleman's slave-bosons method, and we obtain a description that avoids the unwanted phase tra…
For coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, a paradigm of magnetic quantum phase transitions, we develop a systematic expansion in 1/d, the inverse number of space dimensions. The expansion employs a formulation of the bond-operator technique and is based on the observation that a suitably chosen product-state wavefunction yields exact zero-temperature expectation values of local observables in the d->infty limit, with corrections vanishing as 1/d. We demonstrate the approach for a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice, which generalizes the square-lattice bilayer Heisenberg model to arbitrary d. …
We extend to magnetically ordered phases a recently developed expansion in 1/d for coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, where d is the number of space dimensions. This extension utilizes generalized bond operators describing spin excitations on top of a reference state involving triplet condensates. We explicitly consider a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice which displays, in addition to the paramagnetic singlet phase, a collinear antiferromagnetic phase for which we calculate static and dynamic observables at zero temperature. In particular, we show that the 1/d expansion smoothly connects…
The density response of a doped Mott-Hubbard insulator is discussed starting from the t-J model in a slave boson 1/N representation. In leading order O(1) the density fluctuation spectra $N({\bf q},ω)$ are determined by an undamped collective mode at large momentum transfer, in striking disagreement with results obtained by exact diagonalization, which reveal a very broad dispersive peak, reminescent of strong spin-charge coupling. The 1/N corrections introduce the polaron character of the bosonic holes moving in a uniform RVB background. The resulting $N({\bf q},ω)$ captures all features obse…
We theoretically propose possible magnetism-induced negative thermal expansion in honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnets with edge-sharing networks of $MX_6$ octahedra where $M$ and $X$ are transition-metal and ligand ions, respectively. In this crystal structure, the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is composed of two competing contributions, i.e., the antiferromagnetic contribution from a direct 180$^\circ$ $M$-$M$ bond and the ferromagnetic contribution from 90$^\circ$ $M$-$X$-$M$ bonds, amplitudes of which have different bond-length dependence. Numerical analysis of the spin-lattice model…
We investigate various competing paramagnetic ground states of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two dimensional star lattice which exhibits geometric frustration. Using slave particle mean field theory combined with a projective symmetry group analysis, we examine a variety of candidate spin liquid states on this lattice, including chiral spin liquids, spin liquids with Fermi surfaces of spinons, and nematic spin liquids which break lattice rotational symmetry. Motivated by connection to large-N SU(N) theory as well as numerical exact diagonalization studies, we also examine various valen…
Using a series expansion based on the flow-equation method we study the ground state energy and the elementary triplet excitations of a generalized model of crossed spin-1/2 chains starting from the limit of decoupled quadrumers. The triplet dispersion is shown to be very sensitive to the inter-quadrumer frustration, exhibiting a line of almost complete localization as well as lines of quantum phase transitions limiting the stability of the valence-bond solid phase. In the vicinity of the checkerboard-point a finite window of exchange couplings is found with a non-zero spin-gap, consistent wit…
We study magnetic order in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the checkerboard lattice, a two-dimensional version of the pyrochlore network with strong geometric frustration. By employing the semiclassical (1/S) expansion we find that quantum fluctuations of spins induce a long-range order that breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the lattice. The ordered phase is a valence-bond crystal. We discuss similarities and differences with the extreme quantum case S = 1/2 and find a useful phenomenology to describe the bond-ordered phases.
Cluster expansions for the exponential of local operators are constructed using tensor networks. In contrast to other approaches, the cluster expansion does not break any spatial or internal symmetries and exhibits a very favourable prefactor to the error scaling versus bond dimension. This is illustrated by time evolving a matrix product state using very large time steps, and by constructing a novel robust algorithm for finding ground states of 2-dimensional Hamiltonians using projected entangled pair states as fixed points of 2-dimensional transfer matrices.
Elucidating the phase diagram of lattice gauge theories with fermionic matter in 2+1 dimensions has become a problem of considerable interest in recent years, motivated by physical problems ranging from chiral symmetry breaking in high-energy physics to fractionalized phases of strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. For a sufficiently large number $N_f$ of flavors of four-component Dirac fermions, recent sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo studies of lattice quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) on the square lattice have found evidence for a continuous quantum phase transiti…
We reconsider the strong-coupling expansion for the Hubbard model recently introduced by Sarker and Pairault {\it et al.} By introducing slave particles that act as projection operators onto the empty, singly occupied and doubly occupied atomic states, the perturbation theory around the atomic limit distinguishes between processes that do conserve or do not conserve the total number of doubly occupied sites. This allows for a systematic $t/U$ expansion that does not break down at low temperature ($t$ being the intersite hopping amplitude and $U$ the local Coulomb repulsion). The fermionic fiel…
We develop a diagrammatic approach for calculating the high temperature expansion of dynamic correlation functions, such as the electron Green's function and the time-dependent density-density and spin-spin correlation functions, for the infinite-U Hubbard Model with any number of spin species. The formalism relies on the use of restricted lattice sums, in which distinct vertices of the diagram represent distinct sites on the lattice. We derive a new formula for the restricted lattice sum of a disconnected diagram consisting of several connected components, and use it to prove the linked clust…

We present a novel mixed-spin cluster expansion method for a quasi-one-dimensional Haldane system with bond alternation. By mapping the s=1 antiferromagnetic spin model on square and cubic lattices to the equivalent mixed-spin model, we study the competition among the Haldane, the dimer and the magnetically ordered phases. The mixed-spin cluster expansion proposed here allows us to directly deal with the Haldane phase, which may not be reached by standard series expansion methods. The phase diagram is determined rather precisely by making use of an additional symmetry property in the effective…
The phonon dynamics in a one dimensional Heisenberg spin chain coupled to finite-frequency bond phonons is studied. We present the first detailed phonon spectra for these systems using Quantum Monte Carlo. The quantum phase transition is dominated by a central peak, yet the renormalisation of the main phonon branch depends strongly on the bare phonon frequency omega_0. The main branch remains largely unaffected at omega_0 \gsim J, but it softens completely when omega_0 is low enough. This is an unusual scenario for a structural phase transition and was observable only on sufficiently large sys…
Motivated by a recent experiment on Rb2Cu3SnF12, where spin-1/2 Cu2+ moments reside on the layers of Kagome-like lattices, we investigate quantum ground states of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a series of deformed Kagome lattices. The deformation is characterized by a weaker exchange coupling (alpha*J) on certain lattice links appropriate for Rb2Cu3SnF12 with alpha=1 corresponding to the ideal Kagome lattice. In particular, we study possible valence bond solid phases using the perturbation theory around isolated dimer limits, dimer series expansion, and self-consistent bond operato…
We give an account of the short-range RVB liquid phase on the triangular lattice, starting from an elementary introduction to quantum dimer models including details of the overlap expansion used to generate them. The fate of the topological degeneracy of the state under duality is discussed, as well as recent developments including its possible relevance for quantum computing.
The organic charge-transfer salt EtMe$_3$P[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator with localized spins $S$ = 1/2 residing on a distorted triangular lattice. Here we report measurements of the uniaxial thermal expansion coefficients $α_i$ along the in-plane $i$ = $a$- and $c$-axis as well as along the out-of-plane $b$-axis for temperatures 1.4\,K $\leq $T$ \leq$ 200\,K. Particular attention is paid to the lattice effects around the phase transition at $T_{VBS}$ = 25\,K into a low-temperature valence-bond-solid phase and the paramagnetic regime above where effects of short-r…
We study a system of interacting triplons (the elementary excitations of a valence-bond solid) described by an effective interacting boson model derived within the bond-operator formalism. In particular, we consider the square lattice spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, focus on the intermediate parameter region, where a quantum paramagnetic phase sets in, and consider the columnar valence-bond solid phase. Within the bond-operator theory, the Heisenberg model is mapped into an effective boson model in terms of triplet operators $t$. The effective boson model is studied at…
