In this paper, we focus on a class of robust vector polynomial optimization problems (RVPOP in short) without any convex assumptions. By combining/improving the utopia point method (a nonlinear scalarization) for vector optimization and "joint+marginal" relaxation method for polynomial optimization, we solve the RVPOP successfully. Both theoratical and computational aspects are considered.
This paper studies, for the first time, a bilevel polynomial program whose constraints involve uncertain linear constraints and another uncertain linear optimization problem. In the case of box data uncertainty, we present a sum of squares polynomial characterization of a global solution of its robust counterpart where the constraints are enforced for all realizations of the uncertainties within the prescribed uncertainty sets. By characterizing a solution of the robust counterpart of the lower-level uncertain linear program under spectrahedral uncertainty using a new generalization of Farkas'…
In this paper, a polynomial chaos based framework for designing controllers for discrete time linear systems with probabilistic parameters is presented. Conditions for exponential-mean-square stability for such systems are derived and algorithms for synthesizing optimal quadratically stabilizing controllers are proposed in a convex optimization formulation. The solution presented is demonstrated on the derived discrete-time models of a nonlinear F-16 aircraft model trimmed at a set of chosen points.
In distributionally robust optimization the probability distribution of the uncertain problem parameters is itself uncertain, and a fictitious adversary, e.g., nature, chooses the worst distribution from within a known ambiguity set. A common shortcoming of most existing distributionally robust optimization models is that their ambiguity sets contain pathological discrete distribution that give nature too much freedom to inflict damage. We thus introduce a new class of ambiguity sets that contain only distributions with sum-of-squares polynomial density functions of known degrees. We show that…
We consider problems with multiple linear objectives and linear constraints and use Adjustable Robust Optimization and Polynomial Optimization as tools to approximate the Pareto set with polynomials of arbitrarily large degree. The main difference with existing techniques is that we optimize a single (extended) optimization problem that provides a polynomial approximation whereas existing methods iteratively construct a piecewise linear approximation. One of the advantages of the proposed method is that it is more useful for visualizing the Pareto set.
Given $X \subset R^n$, $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$, a parametrized family of probability distributions $(μ\_{a})\_{a\in A}$ on $Ω\subset R^p$, we consider the feasible set $X^*\_\varepsilon\subset X$ associated with the {\em distributionally robust} chance-constraint \[X^*\_\varepsilon\,=\,\{x \in X :\:{\rm Prob}\_μ[f(x,ω)\,>\,0]> 1-\varepsilon,\,\forallμ\in M\_a\},\]where $M\_a$ is the set of all possibles mixtures of distributions $μ\_a$, $a\in A$.For instance and typically, the family$M\_a$ is the set of all mixtures ofGaussian distributions on $R$ with mean and standard deviation $a=(a,σ)$ in …
In this paper we study feasibility and infeasibility of nonlinear two-stage fully adjustable robust feasibility problems with an empty first stage. This is equivalent to deciding whether the uncertainty set is contained within the projection of the feasible region onto the uncertainty-space. Moreover, the considered sets are assumed to be described by polynomials. For answering this question, two very general approaches using methods from polynomial optimization are presented - one for showing feasibility and one for showing infeasibility. The developed methods are approximated through sum of …
Many problems in systems and control theory can be formulated in terms of robust D-stability analysis, which aims at verifying if all the eigenvalues of an uncertain matrix lie in a given region D of the complex plane. Robust D-stability analysis is an NP-hard problem and many polynomial-time algorithms providing either sufficient or necessary conditions for an uncertain matrix to be robustly D-stable have been developed in the past decades. Despite the vast literature on the subject, most of the contributions consider specific families of uncertain matrices, mainly with interval or polytopic …
We study the computational complexity of multi-stage robust optimization problems. Such problems are formulated with alternating min/max quantifiers and therefore naturally fall into a higher stage of the polynomial hierarchy. Despite this, almost no hardness results with respect to the polynomial hierarchy are known. In this work, we examine the hardness of robust two-stage adjustable and robust recoverable optimization with budgeted uncertainty sets. Our main technical contribution is the introduction of a technique tailored to prove $Σ^p_3$-hardness of such problems. We highlight a differen…
This paper studies distributionally robust optimization (DRO) when the ambiguity set is given by moments for the distributions. The objective and constraints are given by polynomials in decision variables. We reformulate the DRO with equivalent moment conic constraints. Under some general assumptions, we prove the DRO is equivalent to a linear optimization problem with moment and psd polynomial cones. A Moment-SOS relaxation method is proposed to solve it. Its asymptotic and finite convergence are shown under certain assumptions. Numerical examples are presented to show how to solve DRO proble…
Budgeted uncertainty sets have been established as a major influence on uncertainty modeling for robust optimization problems. A drawback of such sets is that the budget constraint only restricts the global amount of cost increase that can be distributed by an adversary. Local restrictions, while being important for many applications, cannot be modeled this way. We introduce new variant of budgeted uncertainty sets, called locally budgeted uncertainty. In this setting, the uncertain parameters become partitioned, such that a classic budgeted uncertainty set applies to each partition, called re…
In this paper, we study robust transshipment under consistent flow constraints. We consider demand uncertainty represented by a finite set of scenarios and characterize a subset of arcs as so-called fixed arcs. In each scenario, we require an integral flow that satisfies the respective flow balance constraints. In addition, on each fixed arc, we require equal flow for all scenarios. The objective is to minimize the maximum cost occurring among all scenarios. We show that the problem is strongly NP-hard on acyclic digraphs by a reduction from the $(3,B2)$-SAT problem. Furthermore, we prove that…
In this paper we study the robust invariant sets generation problem for discrete-time switched polynomial systems subject to disturbance inputs within the optimal control framework. A robust invariant set of interest is a set of states such that every possible trajectory starting from it never leaves a specified safe set, regardless of actual disturbances. The maximal robust invariant set is shown to be the zero level set of the unique bounded solution to a Bellman type equation, which is a functional equation being widely used in discrete-time optimal control. This is the main contribution of…
In this paper, we propose a distributed computing approach to solving large-scale robust stability problems on the simplex. Our approach is to formulate the robust stability problem as an optimization problem with polynomial variables and polynomial inequality constraints. We use Polya's theorem to convert the polynomial optimization problem to a set of highly structured Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). We then use a slight modification of a common interior-point primal-dual algorithm to solve the structured LMI constraints. This yields a set of extremely large yet structured computations. W…
This paper discusses a method enabling optimal control of nonlinear systems that are subject to parametric uncertainty. A stochastic optimal tracking problem is formulated that can be expressed in function of the first two stochastic moments of the state. The proposed formulation allows to penalize system performance and system robustness independently. The use of polynomial chaos expansions is investigated to arrive at a computationally tractable formulation expressing the stochastic moments in function of the polynomial expansion coefficients rigorously. It is then demonstrated how the stoch…

This paper proposes a robust version of the unscented transform (UT) for one-dimensional random variables. It is assumed that the moments are not exactly known, but are known to lie in intervals. In this scenario, the moment matching equations are reformulated as a system of polynomial equations and inequalities, and it is proposed to use the Chebychev center of the solution set as a robust UT. This method yields a parametrized polynomial optimization problem, which in spite of being NP-Hard, can be relaxed by some algorithms that are proposed in this paper.
We consider two-stage robust optimization problems, which can be seen as games between a decision maker and an adversary. After the decision maker fixes part of the solution, the adversary chooses a scenario from a specified uncertainty set. Afterwards, the decision maker can react to this scenario by completing the partial first-stage solution to a full solution. We extend this classic setting by adding another adversary stage after the second decision-maker stage, which results in min-max-min-max problems, thus pushing two-stage settings further towards more general multi-stage problems. We …
This paper presents a tractable framework for data-driven synthesis of robustly safe control laws. Given noisy experimental data and some priors about the structure of the system, the goal is to synthesize a state feedback law such that the trajectories of the closed loop system are guaranteed to avoid an unsafe set even in the presence of unknown but bounded disturbances (process noise). The main result of the paper shows that for polynomial dynamics, this problem can be reduced to a tractable convex optimization by combining elements from polynomial optimization and the theorem of alternativ…
