Massive neutrinos are guaranteed to have nonzero electromagnetic moments and, since there are at least three neutrino species, these dipole moments define a matrix. Here, we estimate the current upper bounds on all independent neutrino electromagnetic moments, concentrating on Earth-bound experiments and measurements with solar neutrinos, including the very recent results reported by XENONnT. We make no simplifying assumptions and compare the hypotheses that neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. In particular, we fully explore constraints in the Dirac-neutrino parameter space. Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are different; for example, the upper bounds on the magnitudes of the elements of the dipole moment matrix are weaker for Dirac neutrinos, relative to Majorana neutrinos. The potential physics reach of next-generation experiments also depends on the nature of the neutrino. We find that a next-generation experiment two orders of magnitude more sensitive to the neutrino electromagnetic moments via $ν_μ$ elastic scattering may discover that the neutrino electromagnetic moments are nonzero if the neutrinos are Dirac fermions. Instead, if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, such a discovery is ruled out by existing solar neutrino data, unless there are more than three light neutrinos.
The electric dipole moment of the electron, $d_e$, is known to vanish up to thre e-loops in the standard model with massless neutrinos. However, if neutrinos are massive Majorana particles, we obtain the result that $d_e$ induced by leptonic CKM mechanism is non-vanishing at two-loop order, and it applies to all massive Majorana neutrino models.
We study the theoretical features in relation to dynamical mass generation and symmetry breaking for the recently proposed holomorphic supersymmetric Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The basic model has two different chiral superfields (multiplets) with a strongly coupled dimension five four-superfield interaction. In addition to the possibility of generation of Dirac mass between the pair established earlier, we show here the new option of generation of Majorana masses for each chiral superfield. We also give a first look at what condition may prefer Dirac over Majorana mass, illustrating that a sp…
We discuss the relation between the absolute neutrino mass scale, the effective mass measured in neutrinoless double beta decay, and the Majorana CP phases. Emphasis is placed on estimating the upper bound on the nuclear matrix element entering calculations of the double beta decay half life. Consequently, one of the Majorana CP phases can be constrained when combining the claimed evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay with the neutrino mass bound from cosmology.
If the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, there are at least three new, potentially observable CP-odd phases that parameterize CP-invariance violating phenomena. We currently have no information regarding any of them and know that two out of the three, the so-called Majorana phases, are very hard to access experimentally. Here, we discuss the effect of Majorana phases on charged-lepton electric dipole moments (EDM), and explicitly show that neutrino Majorana phases induce EDMs even in the absence of other sources of CP-invariance violation. We also argue that while the Majorana neutrino contribu…
We calculate the two-loop diagrams that give a non-zero contribution to the electric dipole moment d_l of a charged lepton l due to possible Majorana masses of neutrinos. Using the example with one generation of the Standard Model leptons and two heavy right-handed neutrinos, we demonstrate that the non-vanishing result for d_l first appears in order O(m_l m_ν^2 G_F^2), where m_νis the mass of the light neutrino and the see-saw type relation is imposed. This effect is beyond the reach of presently planned experiments.
Because Majorana fermions are their own antiparticles, their electric and magnetic dipole moments must vanish, leaving the anapole moment as their only static electromagnetic property. But the existence of induced dipole moments is not necessarily prohibited. Through a study real Compton scattering, we explore the constraints that the Majorana fermion's self-conjugate nature has on induced moments. In terms of the Compton amplitude, we find no constraints if the interactions are separately invariant under charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. However, if the interactions are odd under…
We argue that neutrino flavor parameters may exhibit features that are very different from those of quarks and charged leptons. Specifically, within the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) framework, charged fermion parameters depend on the ratio between two scales, while for neutrinos a third scale--that of lepton number breaking--is involved. Consequently, the selection rules for neutrinos may be different. In particular, if the scale of lepton number breaking is similar to the scale of horizontal symmetry breaking, neutrinos may become flavor-blind even if they carry different horizontal charges. This pr…

Radiative corrections to ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}\! \rightarrow {\rm W}^{+}{\rm W}^{-}$ from Majorana neutrinos are studied in the context of the see-saw mechanism. Focusing on the effects of the fourth generation neutrinos, we calculate W-pair form factors, the differential cross sections and the forward-backward asymmetries for the polarized electrons at one-loop level. The behaviour of the form factors at the threshold of Majorana particle pair productions is found to differ from that of Dirac particle pair productions. In the cross section for unpolarized electrons, the radiative correction…
In this paper, we study the time evolution of the expectation value of Majorana neutrino with the Schrödinger picture. The operators with the definite lepton number and operators with the definite mass are related to each other by a Bogolyubov transformation. Then the vacuum with the null lepton number is also related to the vacuum for the massive operator and it is written by the superposition of the vacuum for massive field and Majorana pairs condensed states. We choose the state with a definite lepton number $L$ $=1$ and the momentum ${\bf q}\ne 0$ as an initial state. By writing the state i…
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of charged leptons are significantly suppressed in standard model. It has been found previously that they are even more severely suppressed in seesaw type models by powers of tiny neutrino masses as far as a leptonic CP source is concerned. We investigate whether a Majorana-type Yukawa coupling between charged leptons and a doubly charged scalar can contribute significantly to their EDMs. An observable EDM would then help unravel the Majorana nature of neutrinos by a lepton number conserving quantity. We find that the EDMs are indeed parametrically large, of …
The latest data from the ACME Collaboration have put a stringent constraint on the electric dipole moment d_e of the electron. Nevertheless, the standard model (SM) prediction for d_e is many orders of magnitude below the new result, making this observable a powerful probe for physics beyond the SM. We carry out a model-independent study of d_e in the SM with right handed neutrinos and its extension with the neutrino seesaw mechanism under the framework of minimal flavor violation. We find that d_e crucially depends on whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles. In the Majorana case, d_…
The extended models of the standard model with a single Majorana fermion could be realized as the low-energy effective theory of the well-motivated ultraviolet models. We study the electric dipole moments generated by the effective operators which are composed of the Majorana fermion and the standard model Higgs bosons, especially focusing on the renormalization effects of the effective operators. We give the one-loop anomalous dimension of the effective operators from the scale where the operators are generated to the electroweak scale. In this proceedings, we focused on the electric dipole m…
The coherent photonuclear production of a $\mathrm{J/}ψ$ vector meson at the LHC has been computed using two different sets of solutions of the impact-parameter dependent Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. The nuclear dipole scattering amplitudes are obtained either from ($i$) solutions for this process off proton targets coupled with a Glauber-Gribov prescription, or ($ii$) from solutions obtained with an initial condition representing the nucleus. These approaches predict different cross sections, which are compared with existing data from ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC. The latter approac…
In the kinematical region where the center of mass energy is much larger than all other scales, the Drell-Yan process can be formulated in the target rest frame in terms of the same color dipole cross section as low Bjorken-x deep inelastic scattering. Since the mechanisms for heavy dilepton production appear very different in the dipole approach and in the conventional parton model, one may wonder whether these two formulations really represent the same physics. We perform a comparison of numerical calculations in the color dipole approach with calculations in the next-to-leading order parton…
Through the systematic inspection of graphs in the framework of lightcone perturbation theory, we demonstrate that an identity between the evolution of pT-broadening amplitudes with the energy and the evolution of forward scattering amplitudes of color dipoles off nuclei holds at next-to-leading order accuracy. In the general case, the relation is not a graph-by-graph correspondence, neither does it hold strictly speaking for definite values of the momenta: Instead, it relates classes of graphs of similar topologies, and in some cases, the matching requires an analytical continuation in the ap…
For photon virtualities of $Q^2 \gsim 20 {\rm GeV}^2$, the results of the (hard Pomeron) fit in the tensor-Pomeron model in terms of the variables $Q^2$ and the virtual-photon-proton energy squared, $W^2$, provide empirical evidence for the validity of the Color Dipole Picture (CDP). Consistency of the CDP with the perturbative QCD (pQCD) improved parton model implies the prediction of $C_2 = ε_0 \cong 0.30$ for the exponent $C_2$ of the energy-squared dependence in agreement with the results of the fits. For $Q^2 \lsim 20 GeV^2$, the CDP yields a parameter-free smooth transition from $Q^2 \gs…
The Majorana versus Dirac nature of neutrinos remains an open question. This is due, in part, to the fact that virtually all the experimentally accessible neutrinos are ultra-relativistic. Noting that Majorana neutrinos can behave quite differently from Dirac ones when they are non-relativistic, we show that, at leading order, the angular distribution of the daughters in the decay of a heavy neutrino into a lighter one and a self-conjugate boson is isotropic in the parent's rest frame if the neutrinos are Majorana, independent of the parent's polarization. If the neutrinos are Dirac fermions, …
Assuming that Dark Matter (DM) is made of fermions in the sub-GeV mass range with interactions dominated by electromagnetic moments of higher order, such as the electric and magnetic dipoles or the anapole moment, we show that direct detection experiments searching for atomic ionisation events in xenon targets can shed light on whether DM is a Dirac or Majorana particle. Specifically, we find that between about 45 (120) and 610 (1700) signal events are required to reject Majorana DM in favour of Dirac DM with a statistical significance corresponding to 3 (5) standard deviations. The exact numb…
We present a global fit to HERA data on the reduced cross section measured in electron-proton collisions in the region of small Bjorken-$x$: $x\le x_0=10^{-2}$ and moderate to high values of the virtuality $Q^2<Q^2_{max}=650$ GeV$^2$. The main dynamical ingredients in the fits are two recently proposed improved BK equations for the description of the small-$x$ evolution of the dipole scattering amplitude. These two new equations provide an all-order resummation of double collinear logarithms that arise beyond leading logarithmic accuracy. We show that a very good description of data is possibl…
The helicity of a Dirac neutrino with mass $m$ evolves under the influence of a $B$-field because it has a magnetic dipole moment proportional to $m$. Moreover, it was recently shown that a polarized or anisotropic medium engenders the same effect for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. Because a $B$-field polarizes a background medium, it instigates helicity oscillations even for Majorana neutrinos unless the medium is symmetric between matter and antimatter. Motivated by these observations, we review the impact of a $B$-field and of an anisotropic or polarized medium on helicity oscillations …
We consider elastic neutrino - electron scattering of solar neutrinos with magnetic moments and electric dipole moments, where the solar neutrino state at the scattering site is determined by the evolution in matter and solar magnetic fields of the initial electron neutrino state. We present the general cross section for an arbitrary superposition of active and sterile neutrino types with positive and negative helicities, with particular emphasis on the effect of transverse polarization, which gives rise to an azimuthal asymmetry as a function of the recoil electron momentum. Within our physic…
We express the baryon magnetic moments in terms of the baryon tensor charges, considering the quarks as relativistic interacting objects. Once tensor charges get measured accurately, the formula for the baryon magnetic moment will serve to extract precise information on the quark anomalous magnetic moment, the quark effective mass and the ratio of the quark constituent mass to the quark effective mass. The analogous formula for the baryon electric dipole moment is of no great use as it gets eventually sizable contributions from various CP- violating sources not necessary associated to the quar…
We investigate the role played by the fermionic determinant in the evaluation of the CP-violating neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) adopting the Instanton Liquid Model. Significant differences between quenched and unquenched calculations are found. In the case of unquenched simulations the neutron EDM decreases linearly with the quark mass and is expected to vanish in the chiral limit. On the contrary, within the quenched approximation, the neutron EDM increases as the quark mass decreases and is expected to diverge as (1/m)**Nf in the chiral limit. We argue that such a qualitatively differ…
If dark matter (DM) has non-zero direct or transition, electric or magnetic dipole moment then it can scatter nucleons electromagnetically in direct detection experiments. Using the results from experiments like XENON, CDMS, DAMA and COGENT we put bounds on the electric and magnetic dipole moments of DM. If DM consists of Dirac fermions with direct dipole moments, then DM of mass less than 10 GeV is consistent with the DAMA signal and with null results of other experiments. If on the other hand DM consists of Majorana fermions then they can have only non-zero transition moments between differe…
The correlation between the CP asymmetry in $B\to ϕK_s$ ($S_{ϕK_s}$) and the chromoelectric dipole moment (CEDM) of strange quark ($d_s^C$), which is constrained by the electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{199}$Hg, is studied in the supersymmetric (SUSY) models with the right-handed squark mixing. It is known that, if the right-handed bottom and strange squarks have a CP-violating mixing, such as in the SUSY SU(5) GUT with right-handed neutrinos, the induced gluon-penguin diagram may give a sizable contribution to $S_{ϕK_s}$. However, when the left-handed bottom and strange squarks also have a m…
We analyze the scenario of baryogenesis through leptogenesis induced by the out-of-equilibrium decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos and pay special attention to CP violation. Extending a recently proposed resummation formalism for two-fermion mixing to decay amplitudes, we calculate the resonant phenomenon of CP violation due to the mixing of two nearly degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos. Solving numerically the relevant Boltzmann equations, we find that the isosinglet Majorana mass may range from 1 TeV up to the grand unification scale, depending on the mechanism of CP violation and/or the fla…
Electromagnetic properties of neutrinos, if ever observed, could help to decide the Dirac versus Majorana nature of neutrinos. We show that the magnetic moments of Majorana neutrinos have to fulfill triangle inequalities, $|μ_{ν_τ}|^2 \leq |μ_{ν_μ}|^2 +|μ_{ν_e}|^2$ and cyclic permutations, which do not hold for Dirac neutrinos. Observing a violation of these inequalities, e.g. by measuring the magnetic moment of $ν_τ$ at SHiP, would thus strongly hint either at the Dirac nature of neutrinos or at the presence of at least one extra light sterile mode.
We present a parity-doublet theorem for the representation of the intrinsic parity of Majorana fermions, which is expected to be useful also in condensed matter physics, and it is illustrated to provide a criterion of neutron-antineutron oscillation in a BCS-like effective theory with $ΔB=2$ baryon number violating terms. The CP violation in the present effective theory causes no direct CP violating effects in the oscillation itself, which is demonstrated by the exact solution, although it influences the neutron electric dipole moment in the leading order of small $ΔB=2$ parameters. An analogu…
We examine the contributions of Majorana neutrinos to CP-violating WWZ and ZZZ self-couplings, using a model in which sterile neutrinos couple to the W and Z by mixing with a fourth-generation heavy lepton. We find that the induced form factors can be as large as 0.5%. The model satisfies all phenomenological bounds in a natural way, including those due to the strong limits on the neutron and electron electric dipole moments. Anomalous CP-odd couplings of this size are unlikely to be observed at LEP200, but might be detectable at NLC.
If neutrino is the Majorana particle it can possess only one electromagnetic characteristic, the toroid dipole moment (anapole) in the static limit and nothing else. We have calculated the diagonal toroid moment (form factor) of the Majorana neutrino by the dispersion method in the one-loop approximation of the Standard Model and found it to be different from zero in the case of massive as well as massless neutrinos. All external particles are on the mass shells and there are no problems with the physical interpretation of the final result. Some manifestations of the toroid interactions of Maj…
The effective interactions of dark matter with photons are fairly restricted. Yet both direct detection as well as monochromatic gamma ray signatures depend sensitively on the presence of such interactions. For a Dirac fermion, electromagnetic dipoles are possible, but are very constrained. For Majorana fermions, no such terms are allowed. We consider signals of an effective theory with a Majorana dark matter particle and its couplings to photons. In the presence of a nearby excited state, there is the possibility of a magnetic dipole transition (Magnetic inelastic Dark Matter or MiDM), which …
We make a comparative study of the neutrinoless double beta decay constraints on heavy sterile neutrinos versus other direct and indirect constraints from both lepton number conserving and violating processes, as a sensitive probe of the extent of lepton number violation and possible interference effects in the sterile sector. We introduce a phenomenological parametrisation of the simplified one-generation seesaw model with one active and two sterile neutrino states in terms of experimentally measurable quantities, such as active-sterile neutrino mixing angles, CP phases, masses and mass split…
The scenario of baryogenesis through leptogenesis is reviewed in models involving heavy Majorana neutrinos. The various mechanisms of CP violation occurring in the out-of-equilibrium lepton-number-violating decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos are studied within a resummation approach to unstable-particle mixing. It is explicitly demonstrated how the resummation approach preserves crucial field-theoretic properties such as unitarity and CPT invariance. Predictions of representative scenarios are presented after solving numerically the Boltzmann equations describing the thermodynamic evolution of…
This paper reviews some aspects of the physics of neutrinos, in particular neutrino masses and the issue of Dirac versus Majorana neutrinos. The see-saw mechanism is described and it is argued that the Majorana nature of neutrinos can be tested by measuring the invisible decays of the Higgs particle, as its decay into neutrinos is determined by their Yukawa couplings, i.e. the Dirac masses, rather than the physical Majorana masses. The measurement would allow us to probe the scale M of the large Majorana masses for right-handed singlet neutrinos. The optimal machine for performing such a measu…
At the availability of a nonzero mass, the same neutrino regardless of whether it refers to Dirac or Majorana fermions, must possess simultaneously each of the anapole and electric dipole moments. Their interaction with the field of emission can also lead to the elastic scattering of the longitudinal polarized neutrinos on a spinless nucleus. Using the cross section of a process, the united equation has been obtained between the anapole and electric dipole form factors of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. It corresponds in nature to the coexistence of neutrinos of both types. As a consequence, eac…
The scattering of solar neutrinos on electrons may reveal their CP properties, which are particularly sensitive to their Majorana nature. The cross section is sensitive to the neutrino dipole moments through an interference of electro-magnetic and weak amplitudes. We show how future solar neutrino experiments with good angular resolution and low energy threshold, such as Hellaz, can be sensitive to the resulting azimuthal asymmetries in event number, and could therefore provide valuable information on the CP properties and the nature of the neutrinos, provided the solar magnetic field directio…
Each of neutrinos has a non - zero mass and regardless of whether it is a Dirac or a Majorana mass, can possess both anapole and electric dipole moments. Between their form factors appears a connection, for example, at the longitudinal neutrinos scattering on spinless nuclei. We discuss a theory, in which a mass consists of vector and axial - vector components responsible for separateness of leptonic current into the vector and axial - vector parts of the same charge or dipole moment. Such a model can explain the absence of truly neutral neutrinos vector interactions and the availability of an…
We show that in the MSSM without R-parity symmetry there are no new contributions to electron and neutron electric dipole moments (EDMs) at 1-loop induced by the R-parity violating Yukawa couplings. Non-zero EDMs for the electron and neutron first arise at the 2-loop level. As an example we estimate the contribution of a two-loop graph which induces electron EDMs. On the other hand, we show that the (Majorana) neutrino electric and magnetic transition moments are non-zero even at the 1-loop level. Constraints on the R-parity violating couplings are derived from the existing bounds on the neutr…
The electric dipole moment of the muon (d_mu) is evaluated in supersymmetric models with nonzero neutrino masses and large neutrino mixing arising from the seesaw mechanism. It is found that if the seesaw mechanism is embedded in the framework of a left-right symmetric gauge structure, the interactions responsible for the right-handed neutrino Majorana masses lead to an enhancement in d_mu. We find d_mu as large as 5. 10^{-23} ecm with a correlated value of (g-2) = 13. 10^{-10}, even for low values of tan beta. This should provide a strong motivation for improving the edm of the muon to the le…
We study the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of charged leptons in supersymmetric low-scale seesaw models with right-handed neutrino superfields. We consider a minimally extended framework of minimal supergravity, by assuming that CP violation originates from complex soft SUSY-breaking bilinear and trilinear couplings associated with the right-handed sneutrino sector. We present numerical estimates of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the electron electric dipole moment (EDM), as functions of key model parameters, such as the Majorana mass scale mN and tan(β). In particular…
We address the impact of sterile fermions on charged lepton electric dipole moments. We show that in order to have a non-vanishing contribution to electric dipole moments, the minimal extension necessitates the addition of at least two sterile fermion states. Sterile neutrinos can give significant contributions to the charged lepton electric dipole moments if the masses of the non-degenerate sterile states are both above the electroweak scale. In addition, the Majorana nature of neutrinos is also important. Furthermore, we apply the computations of the electric dipole moments for the most mini…
Probing the origin of neutrino mass by disentangling the seesaw mechanism is one of the central issues of particle physics. We address it in the minimal left-right symmetric model and show how the knowledge of light and heavy neutrino masses and mixings suffices to determine their Dirac Yukawa couplings. This in turn allows one to make predictions for a number of high and low energy phenomena, such as decays of heavy neutrinos, neutrinoless double beta decay, electric dipole moments of charged leptons and neutrino transition moments. We also discuss a way of reconstructing the neutrino Dirac Y…
Searches for neutrino magnetic moments/transitions in low energy neutrino scattering experiments are sensitive to effective couplings which are an intricate function of the Hamiltonian parameters. We study the parameter space dependence of these couplings in the Majorana (transitions) and Dirac (moments) cases, as well as the impact of the current most stringent experimental upper limits on the fundamental parameters. In the Majorana case we find that for reactor, short-baseline and solar neutrinos, CP violation can be understood as a measurement of parameter space vectors misalignments. The p…
Nonzero neutrino masses imply the existence of degrees of freedom and interactions beyond those in the Standard Model. A powerful indicator of what these might be is the nature of the massive neutrinos: Dirac fermions versus Majorana fermions. While addressing the nature of neutrinos is often associated with searches for lepton-number violation, there are several other features that distinguish Majorana from Dirac fermions. Here, we compute in great detail the kinematics of the daughters of the decays into charged-leptons and neutrinos of hypothetical heavy neutral leptons at rest. We allow fo…
We consider the azimuthal asymmetry of the recoil electrons in elastic $νe^-$ scattering of solar neutrinos, which can arise if neutrinos have electromagnetic moments and there is a large solar magnetic field. We show that using this effect it is not possible to distinguish between magnetic and electric dipole moment in the 1-Dirac and 2-Majorana neutrino cases and that averaging over neutrino energy is important and suppresses the azimuthal asymmetry in the 2-Majorana case.
A neutrino possesses the anapole and electric dipole moments. Their interaction with field of emission can also lead to the neutrino elastic scattering by spinless nuclei. In this letter, we present some implications implied from the process cross sections. One of them states that there exists a hard connection between the neutrino magnetic and anapole moments. An equation for the anapole and electric dipole form factors is also obtained. They define the electronic neutrino axial-vector moments. All findings are generalized to the case of a Majorana neutrino.
The interaction of longitudinal and transversal polarized neutrinos (antineutrinos) with the field of a nucleus is investigated at the account of their rest mass, charge, magnetic, anapole and electric dipole moments. The compound structure of cross sections in these processes has the sharply expressed features and generalities for any lepton as well as for a massive Majorana neutrino. A new influence of truly neutral neutrino masses on the elastic scattering by nuclei of an electric charge has been discovered which testifies in favor of the existence of fundamental differences both in the nat…
We investigate the implications of neutrino electromagnetic dipole moments for the radiative decay $π\rightarrow e νγ$. We show that the dominant new effect comes from the interference between the amplitude of the process with the photon emitted by the neutrino and the structure dependent standard amplitude. Such interference takes place only if the massive neutrino is a Majorana fermion. Moreover, since electric and magnetic dipole moments give rise to contributions with opposite signs, future experiments might be able to distinguish between them.
The electric dipole moment of the electron is studied in detail in an extended mirror fermion model with the following unique features of (a) right-handed neutrinos are non-sterile and have masses at the electroweak scale, and (b) a horizontal symmetry of the tetrahedral group is used in the lepton and scalar sectors. We study the constraint on the parameter space of the model imposed by the latest ACME experimental limit on electron electric dipole moment. Other low energy experimental observables such as the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the muon, charged lepton flavor violating proces…
In this study we explore the LHC's Run II potential to the discovery of heavy Majorana neutrinos, with luminosities between $30$ and $3000$ fb$^{-1}$ in the $l^{\pm}l^{\pm}j~j$ final state. Given that there exist many models for neutrino mass generation, even within the Type I seesaw framework, we use a simplified model approach and study two simple extensions to the Standard Model, one with a single heavy Majorana neutrino, singlet under the Standard Model gauge group, and a limiting case of the left-right symmetric model. We then extend the analysis to a future hadron collider running at $10…
