Hyperloop is among the most prominent future transportation systems. It involves novel technologies to allow traveling at a maximum speed of 1220km/h while guaranteeing sustainability. Due to the system's performance requirements and the critical infrastructure it represents, its safety and security must be carefully considered. In transportation systems, cyberattacks could lead to safety issues with catastrophic consequences for the population and the surrounding environment. To this day, no research investigated the cybersecurity issues of the Hyperloop technology.
In this paper, we provide the first analysis of the cybersecurity challenges of the interconnections between the different components of the Hyperloop ecosystem. We base our analysis on the currently available Hyperloop implementations, distilling those features that will likely be present in its final design. Moreover, we investigate possible infrastructure management approaches and their security concerns. Finally, we discuss countermeasures and future directions for the security of the Hyperloop design.
Cybersecurity Dynamics is new concept that aims to achieve the modeling, analysis, quantification, and management of cybersecurity from a holistic perspective, rather than from a building-blocks perspective. It is centered at modeling and analyzing the attack-defense interactions in cyberspace, which cause a ``natural'' phenomenon -- the evolution of the global cybersecurity state. In this Chapter, we systematically introduce and review the Cybersecurity Dynamics foundation for the Science of Cybersecurity. We review the core concepts, technical approaches, research axes, and results that have…

A technology platform that is gradually bridging the gap between object visibility and remote accessibility is the Internet of Things (IoT). Rapid deployment of this application can significantly transform the health, housing, and power (distribution and generation) sectors, etc. It has considerably changed the power sector regarding operations, services optimization, power distribution, asset management and aided in engaging customers to reduce energy consumption. Despite its societal opportunities and the benefits it presents, the power generation sector is bedeviled with many security chall…
The Smart Grid (SG) is a cornerstone of modern society, providing the energy required to sustain billions of lives and thousands of industries. Unfortunately, as one of the most critical infrastructures of our World, the SG is an attractive target for attackers. The problem is aggravated by the increasing adoption of digitalisation, which further increases the SG's exposure to cyberthreats. Successful exploitation of such exposure leads to entire countries being paralysed, which is an unacceptable -- but ultimately inescapable -- risk. This paper aims to mitigate this risk by elucidating the p…

The offshore oil and gas industry has recently been going through a digitalisation drive, with use of `smart' equipment using technologies like the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS). There has also been a corresponding increase in cyber attacks targeted at oil and gas companies. Oil production offshore is usually in remote locations, requiring remote access and control. This is achieved by integrating ICPS, Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and IIoT technologies. A successful cyber attack against an oil and gas offshore a…
Cryptologic Techniques and Associated Risks in Public and Private Security. An Italian and European Union Perspective with an Overview of the Current Legal Framework
Computational Law has begun taking the role in society which has been predicted for some time. Automated decision-making and systems which assist users are now used in various jurisdictions, but with this maturity come certain caveats. Computational Law exists on the platforms which enable it, in this case digital systems, which means that it inherits the same flaws. Cybersecurity addresses these potential weaknesses. In this paper we go through known issues and discuss them in the various levels, from design to the physical realm. We also look at machine-learning specific adversarial problems…

With the turmoil in cybersecurity and the mind-blowing advances in AI, it is only natural that cybersecurity practitioners consider further employing learning techniques to help secure their organizations and improve the efficiency of their security operation centers. But with great fears come great opportunities for both the good and the evil, and a myriad of bad deals. This paper discusses ten issues in cybersecurity that hopefully will make it easier for practitioners to ask detailed questions about what they want from an AI system in their cybersecurity operations. We draw on the state of …
The deployment of monoculture software stacks can cause a devastating damage even by a single exploit against a single vulnerability. Inspired by the resilience benefit of biological diversity, the concept of software diversity has been proposed in the security domain. Although it is intuitive that software diversity may enhance security, its effectiveness has not been quantitatively investigated. Currently, no theoretical or empirical study has been explored to measure the security effectiveness of network diversity. In this paper, we take a first step towards ultimately tackling the problem.…
The automation and connectivity of CAV inherit most of the cyber-physical vulnerabilities of incumbent technologies such as evolving network architectures, wireless communications, and AI-based automation. This book chapter entails the cyber-physical vulnerabilities and risks that originated in IT, OT, and the physical domains of the CAV ecosystem, eclectic threat landscapes, and threat intelligence. To deal with the security threats in high-speed, high dimensional, multimodal data and assets from eccentric stakeholders of the CAV ecosystem, this chapter presents and analyzes some of the state…
In our time cybersecurity has grown to be a topic of massive proportion at the national and enterprise levels. Our thesis is that the economic perspective and investment decision-making are vital factors in determining the outcome of the struggle. To build our economic framework, we borrow from the pioneering work of Gordon and Loeb in which the Defender optimally trades-off investments for lower likelihood of its system breach. Our two-sided model additionally has an Attacker, assumed to be rational and also guided by economic considerations in its decision-making, to which the Defender respo…
The increasingly pervasive connectivity of today's information systems brings up new challenges to security. Traditional security has accomplished a long way toward protecting well-defined goals such as confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authenticity. However, with the growing sophistication of the attacks and the complexity of the system, the protection using traditional methods could be cost-prohibitive. A new perspective and a new theoretical foundation are needed to understand security from a strategic and decision-making perspective. Game theory provides a natural framework to …
A significant limitation of current cyber security research and techniques is its reactive and applied nature. This leads to a continuous 'cyber cycle' of attackers scanning networks, developing exploits and attacking systems, with defenders detecting attacks, analyzing exploits and patching systems. This reactive nature leaves sensitive systems highly vulnerable to attack due to un-patched systems and undetected exploits. Some current research attempts to address this major limitation by introducing systems that implement moving target defense. However, these ideas are typically based on the …
Electric Vehicles (EVs) share common technologies with classical fossil-fueled cars, but they also employ novel technologies and components (e.g., Charging System and Battery Management System) that create an unexplored attack surface for malicious users. Although multiple contributions in the literature explored cybersecurity aspects of particular components of the EV ecosystem (e.g., charging infrastructure), there is still no contribution to the holistic cybersecurity of EVs and their related technologies from a cyber-physical system perspective. In this paper, we provide the first in-depth…
The increase of cyberattacks using IoT devices has exposed the vulnerabilities in the infrastructures that make up the IoT and have shown how small devices can affect networks and services functioning. This paper presents a review of the vulnerabilities of the wireless technologies that bear the IoT and assessing the experiences in implementing wireless attacks targeting the Internet of Things using Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technologies. A systematic literature review was conducted. The types of vulnerabilities and attacks that can affect the wireless technologies that stand the IoT ecosys…
Serverless Computing is a virtualisation-related paradigm that promises to simplify application management and to solve the last challenges in the field: scale down and easy to use. The implied cost reduction, coupled with a simplified management of underlying applications, are expected to further push the adoption of virtualisation-based solutions, including cloud-computing or telco-cloud solutions. However, in this quest for efficiency, security is not ranked among the top priorities, also because of the (misleading) belief that current solutions developed for virtualised environments could …

Robotics is becoming more and more ubiquitous, but the pressure to bring systems to market occasionally goes at the cost of neglecting security mechanisms during the development, deployment or while in production. As a result, contemporary robotic systems are vulnerable to diverse attack patterns, and an a posteriori hardening is at least challenging, if not impossible at all. This book aims to stipulate the inclusion of security in robotics from the earliest design phases onward and with a special focus on the cost-benefit tradeoff that can otherwise be an inhibitor for the fast development o…

Over the past few years, older adults in Singapore have been massively connecting to the Internet using Smartphone. However due to the ever-changing nature of Technology and Cybersecurity landscape, an older adult's limited technical and Privacy and Security (P & S) knowledge, experience and declining cognitive and physical abilities puts them at higher risks. Furthermore mainstream smartphone applications, which are generally not designed with older adults in mind, could result in mismatched mental models thereby creating usability issues. We interviewed 10 older adults above 65 and 10 adults…
The increasing critical dependencies on Internetof-Things (IoT) have raised security concerns; its application on the critical infrastructures (CIs) for power generation has come under massive cyber-attack over the years. Prior research efforts to understand cybersecurity from Cyber Situational Awareness (CSA) perspective fail to critically consider the various Cyber Situational Awareness (CSA) security vulnerabilities from a human behavioural perspective in line with the CI. This study evaluates CSA elements to predict cyber-attacks in the power generation sector. Data for this research artic…
Content delivery networks (CDNs) provide efficient content distribution over the Internet. CDNs improve the connectivity and efficiency of global communications, but their caching mechanisms may be breached by cyber-attackers. Among the security mechanisms, effective anomaly detection forms an important part of CDN security enhancement. In this work, we propose a multi-perspective unsupervised learning framework for anomaly detection in CDNs. In the proposed framework, a multi-perspective feature engineering approach, an optimized unsupervised anomaly detection model that utilizes an isolation…
